Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

They really should get working on a VR mode for dual-GPU setups. Would be perfect. Eliminate most of the issues with dual GPU while targeting a use case which actually needs that grunt!
We know Oculus have talked with both Nvidia and AMD. I'm pretty sure they're both working on this right now.

*Dramatic pause*

RIGHT. NOW.

Sorry if that has been answered already, but will a 7970 be sufficient for DK2?
This is what I currently use* with DK1 and I have no problem getting a stable 60fps. That being said, Rift content isn't really demanding right now and it's only 1280x800.

*I have two actually. But VR and Crossfire don't mix well right now.

I ordered one! Can't wait to lose my VRginity with DK2!!

Questions:

1. Has anyone watched porn on the big screen in the virtual theater?

2. Any horror games coming out made specifically for Oculus?

yeah, Porn + Horror games is my main interest with this device

Will a 6870 cut it on low settings? I'm willing to give up graphical fidelity for an opportunity to try VR? I can upgrade, but I'm only able to spend about $200 on a graphics card for now.

From what I am seeing the 800 series SHOULD be out around May / June if you want to save up and see if you can grab one before July when the kit ships.

I see my GTX 670 will be useless... guess I ordered DK2 for no use.
So sayeth Reddit

I have two 670s in SLI... but this may cause latency. On Oculus forum some users say they have no problems as long as the frame rate stays above 60 frames

a quick question, why haven't anyone use the wiimote for fps aiming combined with oculus? It should way more immersive than mouse and keyboard despite the lag. Of course the hydra is better, but everyone has a few wiimotes at home.

Been using 670 4gb in SLI with no issues whatsoever on DK1. Also able to run just about any game with triple monitor in 1080p @ +60fps

Are there any known/expected major differences between DK2 and the consumer version? Interested in pre-ordering now unless the final version will be radically different.

I don't care, I will buy this with my 670... I may upgrade it later to a 870, but right now it doesn't matter.

My only and biggest concern is that they release the consumer version shortly after, with major upgrades... I think I should wait a bit before jumping

DK2 is feature complete. CV1 will likely have a higher refresh rate and screen resolution.

Sure but I think most people here are worrying about DK2.
The most demanding games in terms of GPU/CPU resources are not supported anyway? I mean nobody will play Crysis 3 with DK2?

What? Best case scenario is end of 2014.

You know what's keeping me from buying this is the prospect of a DK3 based on Consumer hardware more than anything. Don't really want a CV1 as much as I want a devkit.

Well you can by using one of the injection drivers (Tridef, VorpX, etc...). It's not an experience I personally recommend but a lot of people are doing it.

Even then you could set some graphic options down. 670/680/770/780 should be more than enough to play even such games. Nothing to worry about :)

Few of the guys at Microcenter said they were all hearing around May-July range is when they are expecting them in their system.

But like with any GPU release near-distant future is pretty much the best time frame to keep in mind.
20nm won't be ready till Q4 2014/Q1 2015 for bigger chip size. I don't think that Nvidia will release a 28nm Maxwell highend-GPU, the 750Ti was just to show how incredible the new architecture is.

Jesus christ. What you got planned man? Dual 880's or some shit?

Also scary to hear that a 7970 isn't cutting it for ya with a DK1.

I dunno man. A 750Ti isn't all that powerful by PC standards.

This dude up here says a 7970 is giving him trouble! With the 720p version!

My GPU upgrade will come depending on when CV1 is released. I'm gonna put it off as long as possible.
It's probably my CPU that is the issue. Don't freak out :)

And... like three of whatever is the most powerful single chipset GPU come the end of the year. that's the PLAN anyway. I don't want to be giving up performance when I'm in a scenario where single GPU is preferable, as it might well be with the Rift.

but three GPUs have less obvious microstutter than two, also. I was dual chipset once, and I will never be dual chipset again.

StarCitizen. I don't think anything else needs to be said. I hope to be playing the dogfighting module in VR by the end of the year, and that is going absolutely cripple any PC should you turn things up high enough.

Well damn, guess Im sticking with 750 Ti for a bit, wish you could SLI it at least

I'll probably end up installing a bunch of the ol' Illusion games when mine arrives, I won't lie. Although as I recall Oblivion had some *interesting* mods to it.

Fuck yeah!!

Got damn

...sigh... just tried it.....lasted five minutes. I'm such a baby.

The bit by the hanging skeleton... got me twice. But I played all the way through. The giant inanimate spider scared me the most though. I got uncomfortably close to it by accident and that freaked me out.

I don't plan on playing Star Citizen, at least not any time soon, so I guess that upgrading my 6950 can wait a little bit.
I guess.

If you haven't already played through HL2, EP1, EP2, and Doom 3 BFG and it's add ons, you've got a good chunk of excellent gameplay to look forwards to that's hugely improved by playing on the rift.

Then there's dozens of worthy short demos and experiences.

*lol* this guy playing Whispers just yanked his headset off for a split second at one of the first scares. Hah.

Yeah I'm basically waiting on the Rift to actually finish HL2. I've made it (probably) pretty far in, I think I got to the point where you are storming the prison, where the first part of it had those bug guys. I've got my eye on that mod that will give it Razer Hydra functionality, can't wait for that.

Luckily there are so many developers at Oculus VR with glassed that they will definitely will work something out. Hopefully standard-lenses + custom lenses for every eyesight in CV1.

I'd recommend you starting over, since each chapter focusses on different things and its neat to see how they work in VR. Man hacks in the canals, the airboat being chased by the helicopter, and Ravenholme were stand out moments. I've been saving EP1 and 2 (and the Doom 3 add ons), and I'll wait to play them on DK2, but I have played some the section in the dark with Alyx, zombies and ant lions in EP1 and that's fabulous as well.

Seriously, floating enemies are an unexpected treat in VR, for some reason.

I have a single 670. The Tuscany demo runs perfectly locked at 60 fps at 1280x800. But if I bump it to 1920x1080 it drops to 45-50fps.

edit: I went back and tried again, and easily was getting 60fps at 1080p. Dunno what why the FPS was off before.

It's funny, my brain actually figured out stereovision a couple of years back (long story about how that works) and when it happened, I'd look at a balloon and be blown away. It was amazing. So yeah, I'm looking forward to all of that, and am already planning on starting over.
