Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 announced, up for preorder (based on Crystal Cove)

I just ran Ocean Rift at max settings (and 1080p), my framerate went between 40 to 60fps.. This really supprised me. Do I really have to upgrade?

My conf:
8GB RAM
I5 2500k (3.3 ghz)
2x HD6950

There's something up with that demo. I was getting the same thing.

I have an i7 2600k and HD 5970 though.

It probably doesn't like crossfire.

Regarding GST and Australia, this is what I received from Oculus:

Which is fine and all, yet shipping is still $75US :/

Yeah it's a bit shitty. We wouldn't have had to pay duty/gst on a ~$350 item anyway.

I'm not too sure, but I think only way to increase FOV is larger screen. Maybe lens optics can fix it but I feel it will very complex because everyone different retina.

I'm pretty sure FOV has more to do with the optics than anything else, basically, big lenses as close to the eye as possible.
That said, if your lenses get bigger you may need a larger screen as well (assuming the optics are only single lens).

Crossfire / SLI don't work well with the Rift because they can have micro-stutter if you dip below the refresh rate of the monitor. Plus, not all games will support SLI/Crossfire. For the consumer version if you're a solid >90 fps, you're fine since you won't see the microstutter, but if you go below that, then it may have issues with the Rift. There's a big thread on this on Oculus' forum if you want to read more about it. For VR it is very much preferred to just have a powerful single GPU.

That 780 ti is calling my name. My wallet says otherwise.

Well the kit comes in a brief case, which is pretty large to ship so the cost is justified.

Thanks for clearing up the GST query.

Well I own a 780 Ti. It's awesome!

With that said, if you don't need it immediately, just wait until July. You may be able to find a good deal between now and then or something new may come out in the next 3-4 months.

It's a silly thing to think about, but I do wonder if the DK2 box will be as awesome as the DK1 box :P

I hope so! But alas, when asked, Oculus isn't sure yet if they're going to include a box with DK2. It comes down to cost unfortunately.

lol me too. Love my Oculus DK1 case. They did a survey about the case a little while back, I replied that I use mine all the time. Hopefully everyone else said the same.

I replied that everyone would lie pretending they use it just to get another one.

lol u rat fink

I have actually used mine a decent amount though, when I've taken it in to work to demo to people, when I took it on trips home. Once I get my DK2 I plan to put mine back in it's case and stow it away as a little piece of history. The case was a bad ass touch.

I'm really worried about this. Like, 1440p is already something but also some people here mentioning 120 fps as well...

That freaks me out. I consider myself an enthusiast, but even I have my limits. I can't drop 500 or 600 dollars on a video card every 6 months.

Those are insane specs.
Erm just play the game at 1080p or lock it at 60 fps? Or you can tune down some settings like anti aliasing and the like.

Do they charge the card right away or when it ships?

From the FAQ:
If you are paying by credit card, you will see a temporary "authorization hold" on the full balance of your purchase, including taxes and shipping. After the card verifies the funds, the authorization hold will drop off and a charge for $50 (per unit ordered) will be processed. If you are using a Visa/Mastercard Debit Card (tied to your checking account), please make sure you have the funds available for entire purchase price to cover the temporary authorization hold.

If you choose to pay with PayPal, we will charge the full amount when you place the pre-order. Either way, you will pay the same total amount before we ship your development kit out to you.

Oh my what's happening.

Those who ordered on Wednesday know the webpage was a little bit wonky with the button being a pixel high, error messages etc.
On Wednesday I attempted to order three DK2 straight up but received error message.
Reducing it to two and then one and I was finally able to place the order and received the confirmation. However I still needed to ordered a couple of more since I'm working on a VR project so I gave it a few more additional shots but still receiving additional errors.
I then asked my colleagues to plunk down with their company card and additional orders was placed.

Now I suddenly receive an order mail from Oculus that my 3x order (made on Wednesday) has gone through.
If all attempts eventually goes through I will be sitting with a dozen+ kits on order...

Also another thing that the rest of you might want to check as well. They are withdrawing funds in a strange way for these orders. For my 1x order they first withdrawed $150. Then $50.
For my 3x order they have withdrawn $150.

It seems really chaotic on Oculus end which is a bit worrisome.

My 3x order is dated 8:31am PDT Wednesday and my 1x 8:41am so I believe I'm queued pretty well with these.

Oh wow.
$4371 has traded back and forth on my account. Oculus... get your shit together!

edit: Looking at it, that's what went out. Most of it has returned though but with seemingly $50-$150 deducted from each transaction. Looks like I have a few more orders incoming and a cleanup job to do.

Have latest Macbook Pro Retina with 16GB RAM, would that run Half Life 2 fine on Oculus? (Think it has some 750M graphics card).

A 750M is really quite slow, but on the other hand HL2 is really old. I think it would be fine, but don't expect to run any modern stuff at decent settings.

It's a shame you can't test the Source games in VR without a headset plugged in.

Doom 3 BFG edition you can test really easily. Just run it in Side By Side 3D mode.

Actually I wonder how third-party wrappers like Vorpx are going to do now, because modding a game for VR requires more than just distorting the display since the DK2 has 6dof.

You would figure AMD and nVidia would make it like Crossfire/SLI. One GPU per "eye"
It's harder than you might think as then they'd have to worry about sync between the two cards still but then still have to also merge the two frames for output.
It wouldn't really solve much.

Yeah, what they're doing, is withdrawing the whole purchase price immediately, to make sure the account can handle it, then putting it back minus $50 (the deposit), to charge the rest when it ships.

with the consumer version more than a year away I may just jump in to the future with a crystal cove.

Except, the consumer version isn't more than a year away. In one of the interviews they said the final consumer specs were in the final process of being locked down, and they would be quite a bit better than DK2. And when they announced DK2 they said the consumer version was probably going to be just a few months after DK2.

The difference isn't really all that big. You already had to manipulate the camera direction and its position (the latter for the L/R eye offset). It will have to be calibrated somehow for each game to get the units/speed roughly right, but that's true for all third party modification.

I wonder where T3 gets the "consumer version unlikely in 2014" from. As far as I can recall, OculusVR has said nothing about a release date of CV1, but they said that DK2 is close to the final CV1 kit.

Therefore I'm still confident that CV1 will be released this year.

I played with it at GDC. All I can say is, 'effin awesome! When the guy took it off me I told him, 'put that fucking thing back on!' He laughed and asked if I enjoyed it, to which I promptly replied that it was the best thing I had played in years!

I really want to see what people make once they mix OR with Kinect. That combination of tech sounds like it could make for some interesting things down the line.

Having the specs and having the manufacturing contracts and distribution channels are completely different things.

And that quote about being not too far behind was months ago before any true plans for DK 2 were laid out (that we know of).

I am hoping it comes this year whether I buy DK2 or not (i am) but I just dont see it.

I mean, tons of kickstarter projects have "specs almost locked down", it is the building and distribution that is the hard part. Plus the screen 1440p isnt even mass produced and Samsung will eat up a lot of them when it is.

It's too high-latency for most applications, afaik

I think more interesting stuff came from Indie developers using Kinect than actual games developers. Its a shame the OR is such a clunky and massive size, since they could use it in combination with Kinect for the heart-rate stuff. Hopefully they slim it down a bit more because having that kind of tech strapped to your face is going to get tiring.

Edit: Spotted this video and I think it uses old Kinect and it looks kinda cool for an OR+ Kinect tech demo. http://youtu.be/Ei3k65wwylo

The only way I can see the consumer version being released this year is if its just the new development kit with the latency tester removed and maybe a few small changes based on the feedback from users.

Damn! That's the earliest I've seen. I wonder where we are in the line. I'm assuming fairly early because of all the forums/threads I've visited, almost none have been before 8:30 AM PDT.

Ordered 2, got 2 order numbers.

First one at 08:18 AM PDT
Second one at 08:22 AM PDT

Had three ordered because I was unsure if they went through. Thank Jeebus these went through, have order numbers and been charged successfully.

Anybody before 08:18?

I really want to be in the first shipment.

Yeah that's true, but kinect 2 is a major improvement on the first version.. Maybe the 3rd iteration will be a lot better as well?

Personally I'd choose a camera over a body suit any day.. But it can't come at the expensive of latency etc..

A bodysuit would have the added benefit of being able to simulate actually touching / being touched/hit by things.

edit: Not that I expect anything that hardcore to ever become a thing people use lol

I got mine at March 19, 2014 at 08:16 AM.

8:00am is when the announcement was made and pre-orders opened simultaneously. There were probably a few hundred industry people and press people that knew they were going on sale right then, but probably no more than 1000 in those first 10 minutes. I'm hopin I'm definitely within the first 1500 or so.

I don't think it was up at 08:00 on the dot. I was reloading quite a bit. I think preordering went live around 08:10 or so.

I could be wrong.

I just wanna be in the first batch!

This is so painful to read.. My official order is at 9:40 because of the fact that I had trouble with my visa card.. Because my IP originated from another country, it kept giving me a processing order. Else I'd be around 8:20 somewhere :(
