Oculus Rift Launch Thread: Ballpark 2016

How good is porn on the Rift? (Serious question)

They're getting better. A lot more higher quality videos are popping up and they are starting to figure out the right camera angles and model distance to give that sense of intimacy. You're not going to quite feel like you are there but there can be some immersion.

Any of you guys playing the Dragon Front beta? I tried it out this morning and it seems pretty cool. Guess it is going down for a few days for maintenance and update, but I think anyone with a Rift can get in at this point. Give it a shot if you like deck building strategy games. I haven't dug into it much beyond the intro missions so I can't speak to the balance of the factions yet or anything but this kind of game is very much the kind of thing I need in VR right now. Something to reliably come back to and sink time in.

It's also fully playable with just the remote, which I've found I like a lot. I've gotten less and less satisfied with gamepad controls over the past few months; even for stuff where it wouldn't be using hand tracking at all, I think I'd rather just play with the remote or maybe even with Touch controllers since the hands can still be independent. Something about having my hands both stuck to the same device while in VR has gotten more uncomfortable over time. Not sure I could fully explain why, either.

On a side note, if you want to watch the Oculus Connect show in VR, I think it is being done via the NextVR app which means it will be GearVR only as NextVR does not currently have Rift support. Seems kind of shitty unless they are going to do something specifically for Connect this week.

The fact that this is doable is big news to me. Looking forward to using this instead of Blender for building models. Does Medium export UVs too?

No, Medium uses voxels, and it convert them to geometry when you export it in OBJ. There are no UVs, only vertex colors.

I've exported the model and applied an animation, just for fun :)

You are a beast. Is Medium currently available to everyone with early Touch controllers or is it a more selective crowd than that?

After you get Touch, you need to have someone from Oculus to invite you to the closed beta group.
All the rumors indicate that Touch might be released this month, so I'm assuming Medium will be published soon after. :)

Not quite there yet, mostly because of the resolution of 3d VR videos.
It feels like you are there, but everything is in 480p.

The immersion is good, but also the quality of the scenes is... mostly bad. Its mostly POV stuff. The japanese stuff is actually better I would say, but also not much there.

For good VR porn we need better resolutions than what we have now.

Thanks. I guess I will hold off for now.

Surprised nobody avatar quoted me.

Oculus Connect starts tomorrow. Keynote is 10am Thursday, so I'm guessing we'll have confirmation of the Touch release date and price during that.

Looks like it's been through FCC certification (http://www.roadtovr.com/oculus-touch-hits-fcc-ahead-of-launch/).

Will be interesting to see how the Palmer Luckey issue hangs over this. Hopefully at the very least they're going to keep him away from it, having him do the keynote would be so incredibly one deaf.

I agree, they need ot keep Luckey the hell away from this. Second worst would be having Luckey be there for any portion of the keynote without addressing the elephant in the room. The worst would be if they try to do more damage control and spin especially given his and Facebook's comments thus far.

Thought about making a new thread for all the OC3 news, but I don't think it's worth it. For now I'll just dump stuff in here. Besides Landfall, here's the other stuff I've seen:

The next game from Darknet developer E. McNeill is called Skylight. Maybe GearVR only?
Ready at Dawn is teasing a game reveal at OC3
nVidia's VR Funhouse is getting Touch support.
PixelJunk VR teaser for Dead Hungry
Reddit rumor - Oculus will be sending Rift pre-orderers Touch confirmations on Oct 10-11

Fuck yeah, another game from the Darknet guy. On my list. Darknet is awesome.

Sounds like one of the big guns being shown off tomorrow is Facebook's first social app. How wide reaching it is (like is it some specific social thing or basically Facebook VR) remains to be seen. I'm actually very interested to see more after their last demo.

We'll probably find out in a matter of hours. I think the keynote starts at 6pm BST

Yeah, it starts in 4.5 hours from this post. The media embargo for the entire deal is up in 6 hours, so at that point more news will come in like videos and impressions from the event outside the stream.

I imagine units for order reservations from Oculus will ship earlier with retail hitting on November 23rd. That's my theory.

Wouldn't surprise me, that was kind of the idea with the Rift launch. Hopefully they make good on it if they try that again, though.

Stay safe out there. Looks pretty bad.

Been a while since I've used my Rift. I've been waiting for the Touch controllers because it seems like those are needed for a lot of fun things. When we get the touch controllers will the Oculus become compatible with more games that are currently Vive only?

Also, has Oculus or Facebook said anything about Luckey since his shenanigans? I'd feel a lot better about giving this money company if I knew they were distancing themselves from that stuff.

Yes. With the Touch controllers you can play all Vive titles. Vice versa seems not to be the case, because the Touch controllers have one or two more functions than the Vive controllers.

They are not letting Palmer Lucky near this thing right? I am excited as I feel VR is incomplete without the motion controllers. I have gotten bored of oculus games and the magic is totally gone when I play them.

I would be surprised if they had him on stage giving a talk, but who knows. I am excited for touch, but I am also just excited for the announcement of games in general. I just hope they have a nice variety.

He isn't pictured anywhere on the connect website or mentioned in the schedule so I doubt he'll be making any public appearances.

I'm actually pretty excited for Connect though. Touch announcements, game + app announcements, possible GearVR positional tracking news? Carmack responded to a tweet that raised my eyebrows a bit.

Yeah he got his payday already. If I were Facebook I'd want to make him as invisible as possible. Plus ... I wouldnt want to see another embarrassing looking photo of him like on the time magazine cover

So not out till end of year for touch.

Looking forward to getting my google daydream Pixel XL, will get motion control first on that platform versus my rift

Honestly, I thought creating a thread would either:
- Get very low traction and fail to stay on the front page
- Be inundated with anti-Oculus trolling

It seems like the hype for this thing is very low. I expected more buzz here.

Oculus is kind of the red-headed stepchild of VR for Gaf at this point. Then you have the PSVR impressions effectively casting a shadow over the event from a mindshare/hype perspective. I think the only way you'd get massive interest in it here is if Luckey was presenting. That interest wouldn't be positive or focused on the content though.
