Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Anyone know why my Nintendo USB Connector says I have some crazy Japanese (I assume) name? This is what it has been saying for days now:

I don't think it's affecting my connection in any way, but I just think it's a bit weird.
I don't think you have anything to worry about:

If I reset my connections on the Wii, my console name will show up fine for a few days and then revert back to that gibberish. It's been like this though since the console launched basically and I've had no problems.

Heh, weird for DKC3 to get rated in Europe first but actually come out here first.

Anyway, DKC3, Blades of Steel, and Rolling Thunder 2 are all decent games, but the whole lineup is pretty underwhelming, even if this wasn't the Christmas update.

Damn Nintendo. It's like you're giving me a football instead of an official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time like I wanted.

But you'd shoot your eye out.

It's been like 4 months since Starmen.net was saying we should expect EB "soon." and now we're down to one more update before year's end, unless Nintendo pulls a fast one and has an unannounced Christmas day update.

I'm dying to play through EB for the first time though.

Well, to call Starmen.net's populace "fanatics" would be kind. Even if they do have information (and I think that they do), they could easily misconstrue "It's being worked on" as "It's coming within a month." Hell, Nintendo could say that it's planned for VC release and it would be true, as it would also be true for pretty much every SNES game ever developed by Nintendo.

Now that the pessimism is out of the way, I really don't know why they haven't released it yet. The VC is still light on RPGs, and Earthbound could benefit from sales to people just looking for an RPG. Plus, Nintendo has to know about how Starmen.net plans to push the game's VC release hard, going as far as gifting copies to people. If I were Nintendo, I'd release it just to see how serious they are. I mean, it's free money and free advertising for one of their more obscure series.

Sometimes I wonder how much control Nintendo of America has on the US VC releases. It's possible NoJ is calling the shots. We certainly haven't seen any US developed titles yet (why have the Super Turrican games been sitting unreleased for so long?)

A Christmas Eve like that is kind of a gut punch.

Word of caution: If any of you are considering buying Donkey Kong Country 3, but have never played Donkey Kong Country 2 before, buy DKC2 instead or you're making one of the greatest mistakes of your gaming life. DKC3 isn't even in the same league as its predecessor.

DKC 3 is very underrated, I went back and played it and the soundtrack is amazing.

I remember really liking Blades of Steel when I played it at my cousins' house. I hope it holds up well, nearly 20 years later.

How does Nintendo's Ice Hockey (which I've never played) compare to it? I'm leaning towards picking up Blades of Steel for nostalgia reasons, but I'll get Ice Hockey if it's considered the better game.

Yay DKC3 (Obviously they chose it because of the Christmas cheat!) very underrated BTW, yeah it's not as good as DKC2 but it's still a fantastic game that everyone should play!

Great for me since I always play the game with the "merry" cheat as a tradition at Christmas and I don't have the game anymore! Now my tradition can continue again! (Actually I saw it coming a mile off this week TBH!)

I bought Pokemon Snap and holy shit, this game is fun! It's like a rail shooter only with really detailed specific things you need to do to improve your score and a ton of replayability.

I'm actually kind of surprised to see Donkey Kong Country 3 now. Honestly, I expected to receive it much later.

It's not necessarily a bad game, per se. I mean, it's a solid platform game, but it's nowhere nearly as great as Donkey Kong Country 2 or any top-tier SNES platform game. My problem isn't really with Kiddy Kong (who is frequently cited as a negative factor in DKC3), but the overall blandness of the art design (compared to DKC2) and a drop in level quality. The levels frequently rely on stupid gimmicks that aren't fun at all. One particularly grievous level is a set of sewer pipes where your horizontal controls are reversed while you have to navigate a maze of bees. There are a lot of pointless fetch-quests involving the Brothers Bear and the game just feels overall sloppy compared to DKC2.

I'd recommend it to nobody but the diehards.

I never understood why in Donkey Kong Country 3 they introduced the Bears, and the new tedious overworld, so unneeded. Also they seemed to have changed art direction as they went for a more realistic look...I don't know why, but it just seems that some of the charm from the old baddies was gone replacing them generic versions of themselves.

I liked how they always introduced a new character, but leaving one familar one there - great concept, and I thought Kiddy worked out fairly well too.

The banana birds were fun, but kind of an overkill on collecting things - along with bear coins.

Still the boards are solid, and the music is fantastic - worthy of the 3 title, but is just different from the other two - if those problems could be recitified, I'd say the trilogy would have been amazing.

Is there a possibility that you'll get both a Monday update, and a special Christmas Day update?

I just keep setting myself up for dissapointment :(

Blades of Steel and DCK3. Great Christmas Eve update! Blades of Steel is the best hockey game ever.

See this? This person knows what's up. Anyone who doesn't know about the greatness of BoS should spend the 5 bucks on Monday and learn of its awesomeness.

Ok, so this is the first time i downloaded 2p SNES game -

I've got one CC on the wiimote, and a wavebird plugged in to port 1 GCN, and started a 2p game. Finished the first level as Mario with CC, and then on Luigi's turn, the dpad (or analog) isn't working. Pressing L or R works (bringing up the switch lives screen) and start, Y and B work here too. Figuring it was something stupid, i restarted and had the same issue, so i tried a corded GCN pad and still no movement! On a whim, i restarted again and began the game as mario using the GCN pad, which worked fine. It switches to second player using the CC, and now that's exhibiting the exact same behaviour!

Then, i'm just about to post a thread and get owned immediately, when i figured i should try the GCN controller in port 2, lo and behold it fuck'n works. Is this really how it has to be done? Or am i just a retard for thinking otherwise in the first place?
Rhetorical question!

IIRC, if player 1 uses the CC, you have to plug the GC controller in port 2.
Otherwise you will end up with both of you controlling player 1.

Yep, its a GREAT game. I can't believe more people weren't excited for its release. I'm not even a pokemon fan.

Have you opened up the secret course yet?

it is one of the best N64 games (screw you if anyone tries to make a joke out of this)

Another week without Shining Force II is another week I don't spend any money. Thanks Nintendo for watching out for my wallet! :D

Another lousy week? Awesome.

More time to spend on Firepro.
Let me get this straight...

You paid $250+ for a new system, yet you're spending all your time on the ancient PS2 and Fire Pro?

Okay, okay, I admit it... I'm doing the same thing too. :lol :D

Can someone explain to me how nintendo had time to plaster DS Lite advertisments all over my copy of Wave Race but they refuse to make enhancements or add online play.

At least one region will have an awesome Christmas VC update--according to Gamefront, Japan's getting Treasure Hunter G, Langrisser II, and Dragon Slayer.

It's somewhat of a unique case because they had to remove the original advertisements because of licensing issues. Not saying it's defensible so much as merely that such is probably their reasoning.

Doing one us probably substantially easier than the other?

Just, you know, a guess.

Hey, N64 games are rendered at a higher resolution with increased framerates, and Pokemon Snap has online photo-sharing.

It's a start.

This is going to sound extremely TGM, but what's the best shooter on the VC that also has either an unlimited lives code or a code that gives you more lives than you'd need to finish the game? I love shooters, but I'm awful at them and just want to see it all.

Well, all I can say is that it's certainly not Soldier Blade, R-Type III, Gate of Thunder, Zanac, or Blazing Lazers. [Edit: Apparently I know not enough about Blazing Lazers. Scroll down a bit to another response.] Super Star Soldier has a code to access an easy difficulty, so maybe that.

Someone else would have to provide answers on Air Zonk, Super Air Zonk, Star Soldier, Bio-Hazard Battle, R-Type I, and the rest...

Could you explain it to me, because I'm stumped. I read that lives after 3 let you respawn, but i had 5 lives, died, and went to the beginning. Other times i just respawn. I'm dumbfounded.

Yeah, it's a little strange. I'll try and make it clear :)

The different coloured orbs you can get are your weapon upgrades (Ignoring the D/M ones). Find one you like (Red every time for me) and stick with it. If you keep upgrading your ship's current weapon, not only will your weapon upgrade its power, but your ship will suddenly be able to take a few hits, represented by the little blue shields surrounding the ship. If you go to another weapon, you'll still maintain the power of your previous weapon, but constant weapon swapping may mean you'll miss a chance or two to power up your weapon through consecutive orbs.

The ones with D and M on represent Defence and Missiles. The former creates two little 'objects' (Not the 'blue shields' I mentioned before) that you can rotate 90 degrees, with 2 on the Wii Remote (A on the Classic Controller). You can use these to shield yourself against bullets, but I've never really been able to use it effectively. M is for missiles, which will fire as you shoot your normal weapon. I find these far more handy than the Defence, as it adds much needed fire-power. If you go for the missiles, collect any M orbs you can, as you'll fire them at a faster rate :)

Finally (And the bit that seems to particularly confuse you [It did the same to me!]), you've probably noticed that some of the orbs that fly down cycle through the different weapon types and D/M. If you shoot this orb, it'll stop moving down/cycling. Keep shooting (But be aware of your surroundings!) and eventually the orb will move down again simply flashing. Pick this up and you get the chance to generate back where you are when you lose a life, instead of going back to the beginning of the level. The number of 'flashing' orbs you get will equate to the number of chances you can generate back where you are.

On a side note, the little ship on the HUD next to the lives counter will be orange if you have at least one respawn chance, and a normal grey if not.

Stick at it, once it all *clicks* you'll find the game a whole lot more manageable :)

What's the general consensus on The Dynastic Hero vs. Wonder Boy in Monster World? The game looks awesome but I don't know which I'd get.

From what I've heard, the differences are:
TDH:
-has better music
-has an easier last boss
-has a different translation
-is cheaper

WBIMW:
-has better graphics
-takes up less space
-cleaner emulation

What are the specifics on these? Are the graphics significantly better in WB, or just different and less generic? Which translation is better? Will the difficulty of WB's last boss prevent me from finishing the game?

I haven't bought or played Dynastic Hero, but I can say that if memory space is a concern, get the Genesis version. It takes up about 30 blocks, as opposed to Dynastic Hero's 250.

They're the same price, actually, since The Dynastic Hero is a CD game.
And TDH's "better music" is absolutely better in terms of sound quality, due to being a CD game, but the compositions are entirely different. WB's are more lighthearted; TDH's are more "epic" in tone. Decide from there, but in terms of what they're trying to accomplish, they're about on par as far as compositions alone go.

Are the graphics significantly better in WB, or just different and less generic?
The graphics are basically equal in each game. (Although I guess people who have owned an original TG16 notice some kind of blurriness? Whatever the case, it wasn't recognizable to me.) In terms of character design, though, Scion (Wonder Boy) is a lot cooler than the TDH guy and his bizarre Beetle Man outfit.

Which translation is better?
The only real difference is that a number of the towns' leaders have changed in design completely, and accordingly the translations call them by different names... I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll use a fake example: let's say it would be like if one game's town elder was an elf and the other's was a dryad. No real change other than names and titles...

Oh, actually there's one thing I liked a lot better about TDH: the pre-last battle sequence, which did a lot more to bring the storyline full-circle than WB's. No more detail than that, though, but even there, they actually reworked the cutscene entirely. It's not just the translation.

Will the difficulty of WB's last boss prevent me from finishing the game?
Quite possibly. It did to me. :(
