Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

That would drive Canadian to madness.

Yeah, Nintendo does a good enough job of that themselves.

I would love the opportunity to download Toki Tori tomorrow. I would very much love it indeed.

The fact that we want it means that we won't get it tomorrow.

Ah. We must be learning. Nintendo will soon throw us a curve ball. A five game week of awesome will make the next batch of nothingness all the more painful.

Moving on to the bargaining phase of depression, I'll now cut a deal. Here's a small list of games I want, narrowed down with the criterion of having even moderate potential to show up on Monday (due to having been rated, having been already released in another region, or being in a series which has appeared numerous times on VC already):

Adventures of Lolo 3, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse, Dr. Mario, Dragon Slayer, Earthbound, Family Ping Pong, Final Soldier, Gley Lancer, Gyrostarr, Shining Force II, Star Parodier, Super Fantasy Zone, Toki Tori, Ys Book I & II

For each VC import that shows on Monday, I'll take one and a half days off from criticizing any aspect of VC not related to storage (which is an aspect of Wii), even in a constructive fashion. For each VC non-import that shows on Monday, I'll take one day off. For each WiiWare game, I'll take half a day off. These rules also apply to VC games from my old enormous wishlist post, but I don't want to load down the thread with that again.

This is a one-week-only deal. Let's see if they can get me to take three days off. Edit: Or more, but who am I kidding?

I take a whole week off from anti-complaining complaining when we get what I consider a sub-par one game week, but Jiggy does have somewhat high standards for complaining.

Going by her list I'm probably betting on a one day no complain zone next week as we'll probably get Dr. Mario and TT this week on Wiiware.

Even I think I'll be taking two and a half days off. One VC non-import I want, and three WiiWare games! I don't know why I'm optimistic and expecting so much, but I am. D:
Also, I never said that the days I take off from complaining would necessarily be during this week. :D
But they will be.

WII-KLY UPDATE: TWO WIIWARE GAMES AND TWO VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

May 26, 2008

This week's Wii-kly Update pretty much covers the full spectrum. Maybe you'll want to blast away with an arsenal of old-school weapons. But then again, three-day weekends are a good time to relax. So maybe you'll take a wild road trip or settle in for some table tennis. And if you overdo it, we have a physician standing by.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare™

Dr. Mario® Online Rx (Nintendo, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,000 Wii Points): The doctor is in! Mario™ takes a break from his adventuring ways and once again dons his stethoscope for a new generation of germ-battling mayhem. In addition to the classic mode of using vitamins to exterminate viruses, you'll find two battle modes and an online multiplayer mode where you can hone your skills against players from around the world. Feel like challenging a friend who doesn't have Dr. Mario Online Rx? Then the WiiWare-exclusive Friend Battle Demo is just what the doctor ordered. Or maybe you'd like some help taking on those nasty viruses? Try out Virus Buster, where four players can simultaneously move capsules simply by pointing at them with a Wii Remote™ controller. Any way you look at it, Dr. Mario Online Rx is a prescription for fun that everyone can enjoy.

Family Table Tennis (Aksys Games, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): It's time for some good old family fun, and what's more fun than table tennis? Just like a real family, choose your character from a cast of four, which includes Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy. There are four table tennis-tastic stages where it doesn't matter if you're an indoors or outdoors table-tennis player. Pick your poison from a gymnasium, a forest park, a beach or even an amusement park. Choose from Single or Versus mode, or select a minigame to play. In Versus mode, you and a friend can play against each other to see who is the better table-tennis player. And if Single and Versus modes aren't enough, select between three minigames, which include Target Table Tennis, Thrilling Table Tennis and Matching Table Tennis. The appealing cell-shaded graphics and endearing music, on top of the super-fun game play, will have you and your family playing from morning till night. Get your paddles ready.

Virtual Console™

City Connection™ (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone - Comic Mischief, Tobacco Reference, 500 Wii Points): Based on the arcade hit, a young man born in California sets out to tour famous sites and cities around the world. As he drives the highways surrounding these locations, the road is painted white as proof of his visit. Only once all sections of the road have been painted will he move on to the next location in his world tour. Not surprisingly, the local police will chase the driver and do their best to stop him from completing his goal. In addition, cats roam the highways and spikes lie in wait for unsuspecting drivers. To combat these dangers, the driver's customized car can jump, fire cans of oil and collect balloons to warp to a new stage. It's the ultimate road trip.

Metal Slug (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen - Blood, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1996 by SNK, Metal Slug is a side-scrolling military-action game. Players control Marco and Tarma, both members of the special-ops force Team Peregrine Falcon (commonly known as Team PF), and battle their way through stage after stage of intense action. The goal is to try to overthrow General Morden and win back the stolen weapon, the Metal Slug. Players must blast through waves of enemies and machines (while also jumping over any obstacles in the way) to advance through the stages. It's not as hopeless as it might sound, though—weapons such as heavy machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers and flamethrowers, as well as the Metal Slug itself (which appears frequently in the game), will make the battle easier. Take on General Morden with a friend to lighten your load and ramp up the excitement even more.

Damn it--I wanted Toki Tori this week.

Oh well. Dr. Mario it is.

What are the controls for Metal Slug and does it have any bugs/issues?
They're perfectly normal, unlike in the Anthology, where you had to flick the remote to throw grenades. And of course the d-pad on the GC controller works as well now.

This week is like a 24-pack of Budweiser. Good that you get so much, but none of it is good enough to justify making space in your fridge.

Really? I always thought the main character was a criminal on the run. It's a great game either way, one of the ones I still like to play on my NES to this day.

Dr. Mario and Metal Slug.

Not bad. But i personally won't buy Dr. Mario as i have the best version already (SNES) and Metal Slug Collection.

Nice try Nintendo!! :P

I can finally play Metal Slug the way it was meant to be played (and hopefully better emulated than the one on Anthology), so +1 for me.

....actually, I think I'm gonna wait for the SNK Arcade Classics Wii compilation to come out to see how it is emulated before shelling out $9 just for that game.

Probably going to get Dr. Mario Rx too, just for the online mode.

If it's anything like the PS2 SNK arcade classics, the emulation will suck.

I had bought Metal Slug Anthology for Wii. And I sold it after one week. The emulation was that ugly. I won't even bother with the SNK Classics compilations, as word on the street doesn't sound encouraging.

I still have the PSP version of Anthology. Despite some loading pauses, I rather like that one.

Jiggy why not just register with MobyGames to more easily keep track of your wishlists (I'm curious about your collection as well). They have some good general info on older games too plus the reviews will do in a pinch.

I can't help but be a little worrisome about Neo-Geo support on VC. While I understand why D4 would want to go in sequential order, in so many cases the older games like the original FF are much worse. I hear the original MS is OK but I believe 2, 3, and X are considered the best. It would seem more exciting to jump around a little, say put up KoF '94 and then '97 or '00 or something. This is waiting at it's worst. Hoping for MotW? Looks like you'll be waiting a LOOONG time.

Does Metal Slug have hit flash or not? If it does, I will buy it in a heart beat since that was removed from the Anthology, if not I'll just stick to the version I have.

Metal Slug is tempting...I like the idea of improved controls and hit-flashes, but I already have the Anthology and...well, it is 900 points.

If it were Metal Slug X, I'd probably cave. >_>

All in all, this is a decent enough week. I wanted Toki Tori, though. Oh, well. Can't win 'em all.

God, I am such a newbie at this, but I have never played a Metal Slug game in my life!

I have a 360, and know that 3 is on there. But the original is now here on VC for a dollar less. Which one do you recommend more? Which one has the best emulation?

I hope Nintendo/SNK aren't evil enough to put up 2 before X, or just skip X ;-;

Also, Hit Flash is when you shot the boss, they flash to let you know you are doing damage, and not missing. They took this out of anthology because Nintendo is paranoid about being sued (again?) for causing seizers.

Oh, anyone know if they let you have the option to turn the water blood on? I always preferred it for some reason.

I can garanty you the best emulation is on the VC. The emu of all console is well, pretty much perfect. Except the TG-16 games that have a filter on them that you can't fucking turn off. (well, might not be a filter, maybe it's just that they doubled the resolution. Anyways, makes them look blurry.)

I'd say that Metal Slug 3 is the better game overall, plus you get online co-op with the XBLA version. However, the XBLA game has an ugly filter on it. The VC version offers a slightly inferior (but still very good) game with better emulation and the option to use controllers with good d-pads. Honestly, I think the best course of action would be to get the PS2 Metal Slug Anthology, which is a better value. Out of the two DLC options, though....personally, I'd go with Metal Slug 3, which is a better (and harder) game.

Yeah I just read some reviews on the compilation, doesn't sound so good. I'll grab Metal Slug after all. Nice to see confirmation on the flash hit detection. I remember reading somewhere that they removed it for the VC emulation.

I'm currently playing Super Mario World after finishing Super Mario Bros., and I'm having a hard time adjusting to the neutered sense of speed in SMW. I've been rediscovering the Super Mario series after being inspired by Super Mario Galaxy, and I've since become the biggest Super Mario fanboy, ever. Thanks to the Virtual Console, I've completed Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros. for the first time. I hope to play SMB3 and YI soon.

Metal Gear... erm, Slug? Meh, I have the PS2 Anthology disc, so that's taken care of.

For some ungodly reason, I want to see Cruis'n World on the VC. I remember the N64 version of that game being the best home port of a Cruis'n game to date, with near arcade perfect gameplay (no animals to run over, but everything else survives intact), new circuit tracks, and 4-player splitscreen multiplayer. If Cruis'n USA can make it to the VC, World should be happening as well... unless it uses the memory card to save games...

Some of us are getting VC Metal Slug due to how shitty the PS2 anthology was.

What were the imports we were supposedly going to get again..?

Ok. I've dressed a least of games i would buy if they pop on the VC. (only SNES so far)
According to GAF, what are the chances for each game to appear at all on the service?

Also, i'm open for suggestions of games i might want to add to the list or games i really should kill from the list.

Ok let's start with my SNES library so you don't lose time talking about games i already own:
Super Mario AllStars / Super Mario World / F-Zero / Donkey Kong Country / Donkey Kong Country 2 / Super Punch Out / Final Fantasy 4 / Final Fantasy 6 / Final Fantasy Mystic Quest / Secret of Mana / Chrono Trigger / Harvest Moon / Breath of Fire / Earthbound / Zelda ALTTP / Pilotwings / Super Metroid / Super Mario Kart / Castlevania Dracula X / Super Castlevania 4 / Ninja Gaiden Trilogy / Top Gear / Hagane / Mickey The Magical Quest / Aladdin / Contra 3 / Super Turrican / Do re mi Fantasy.

Now here's the list of potential games to buy if they would pop on VC:
(don't even bother to suggest games outside the genres you see here)

Skyblazer
Published by Sony, so almost certainly not happening.

Super Turrican 1 & 2
Super Turrican is already on the US VC. I think 2 is certain to come given how interested Factor 5 seems in the platform. (A link to this page is the mostprominent item on their front page.)

Tetris/Dr. Mario
Two reasons this probably won't come: The Tetris Company wouldn't approve a release of a Tetris game that doesn't use their current rules(infinite spinning) and Nintendo probably wouldn't want to overlap with Dr. Mario on Wiiware.

Out of This World
I have no idea whether this is coming to VC, but there is an official hi-res PC remake available as a $9 download.

Your wish is my command:

Kirby's Dream Land 3 yes, definitely
Super Bonk's Adventure Probably
Ardy Lightfoot no--Titus no longer exists, no one knows who owns their IP.
Super Adventure Island Probably
Prehistorik Man no--Titus no longer exists
Aero the Acrobat 1-2 likely no--Iguana no longer exists, Sunsoft might have the IP though.
Zero: The Kamikaze Squirrel likely no--Iguana/Sunsoft
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose no--licenced
Zool: Ninja of the 'Nth' Dimension no--Gremlin no longer exists, and it's a port; Infogrames probably has the IP but it's not clear and Infogrames is not a VC partner
Rocky Rodent maybe--Irem is a partner but they're going slow
Joe and Mac 1-2 maybe--Data East is bankrupt. If G-Mode got Joe and Mac, no. If Paon got it, maybe.

---- Action ------------------------------------------------------

The Ignition Factor - Maybe--it's obscure so probably not. No rights issues
Zombies Ate My Neighbors - Probably--ESRB
Kirby's Superstar - No; DS remake
Demon's Crest - Maybe; Capcom sucks at VC
Skyblazer - No; Sony
Goof Troop - No; Licenced
Blackthorne - No; Blizzard is not a VC partner, Interplay no longer exists. Rights unclear.

---- Adventure --------------------------------------------------

EVO the Search for Eden - No; Enix is not forthcoming, Almanic is dead.
Flashback - No; port, US Gold is dead, Delphine is dead. Rights unclear.
Out of This World - No; US Gold/Delphine
S.O.S. - Maybe; Vic Tokai only has one game out for VC, and this is super obscure.
Nosferatu - No; I think SETA is bankrupt
Equinox - No; rights for game got fucked during the Acclaim collapse

---- Run & Gun --------------------------------------------------

Super Turrican 1-2 - Already there
True Lies - No; licence

---- Non-Traditional Shooter ----------------------------------

Pocky and Rocky - Probably not; shit is fucked with licence, look up Heavenly Guardian.
Pocky and rocky 2 - Probably not; shit is fucked with licence, look up Heavenly Guardian.

---- Beat-em-up ------------------------------------------------

Ninja Warriors - Maybe, but probably not; Square-Enix sucks at VC
Knights of the Round - Probably not; Capcom sucks at VC
Captain Commando - Probably not; Capcom sucks at VC
Super Double Dragon - Maybe; AkSys probably has the rights.
Peace Keepers - Maybe; obscure, though.

---- Pinball ------------------------------------------------------

Super Pinball: Behind the Mask - No; Meldac is dead

---- Action RPG -------------------------------------------------

Shadowrun - No; Microsoft owns the licence
Super Adv Island 2 - Maybe

---- Strategy ----------------------------------------------------

Ogre Battle - No; SE sucks at VC
Uncharted Waters: New Horizons - Maybe
King Arthur's World - Maybe; Argonaut no longer exists
Syndicate - No; EA sucks at VC, Bullfrog is dead

---- Puzzle ------------------------------------------------------

Tetris/Dr. Mario - No; WiiWare
The Lost Vikings 1-2, - No; Blizzard

---- Racing ------------------------------------------------------

Street Racer - No; Ubisoft sucks at VC, plus this was mega-multiplatform so wouldn't be a likely title if Ubisoft did hop on.

Based on what was recently released in Europe, North America should see Gradius II, Final Soldier, Break In, Cho Aniki, Gley Lancer, Star Parodier, and Digital Champ: Battle Boxer (by the end of the year :P ). Basically, a schmup fan's wet dream. Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa has also been ESRB rated, so that's a possibility as well.

Edit:

Stumpokaw said:
Zombies Ate My Neighbors - Probably--ESRB

The ESRB rating has been pulled for a while now. Konami looked like they were set to release this last year, but it apparently got scuttled for unknown reasons. I wonder if maybe LucasArts demanded a cut somehow and Konami decided it wasn't worth the trouble.

Stumpokaw said:
King Arthur's World - Maybe; Argonaut no longer exists

Jaleco published the game in all regions - I wonder if they retain the rights to it? They've published some games on the VC, so that would improve King Arthur's World's chances.

Can't comment on all of those games, but as for these:

Kirby's Dream Land 3 - Nintendo game, so this should be nearly guaranteed. It was already ESRB-rated for Wii, too.
Super Bonk's Adventure - Hudson's been the most supportive third-party on VC. This should be nearly guaranteed too.
Super Adventure Island - See Super Bonk.
Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose - Licensed game, so I doubt it. :( It's not even a game like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on NES, which probably only came out because at least there was a new modern series to be promoted.

---- Action ------------------------------------------------------

Zombies Ate My Neighbors - This was once rated by the ESRB and then removed. Looks unlikely. :( Also, I believe some of the rights were owned by LucasArts, and they've put nothing up on VC so far.
Kirby's Superstar - Nintendo is making some sort of port/remake on DS. I still think it'll come to VC eventually, though, but probably not until at least two years after that DS release so they can get maximum sales out of the DS version first.
Demon's Crest - I hope so. Oh, I really hope so. But regardless of whether Capcom or Nintendo is actually at fault, Capcom games have been slow to go up... :/
Skyblazer - Not happening unless Sony goes third-party or teams up with Nintendo for some reason.
Goof Troop - Another licensed game like Tiny Toon Adventures. (By the way, I seem to remember this being more of a puzzle game. Not sure, though.)

---- Adventure --------------------------------------------------

EVO the Search for Eden - This is probably considered lower-tier than ActRaiser and (I hope) considered higher-tier than King's Knight, so maybe there's a chance. This is more like an action RPG than an adventure, by the way. Or even just straight action, with minor RPG elements.

---- Run & Gun --------------------------------------------------

Super Turrican 1-2 - Super Turrican is already up. Super Turrican 2 is ESRB-rated, and Factor 5 had already made the other two SNES/Genesis Turrican games available.

---- Beat-em-up ------------------------------------------------

Knights of the Round - See Demon's Crest. (I want Demon's Crest a lot more than this, though, but I think they have about the same odds.)

---- Action RPG -------------------------------------------------

Super Adv Island 2 - See the other Hudson games.

---- Strategy ----------------------------------------------------

Ogre Battle - I worry about this one quite a bit. Square-Enix seems to hate this series, since they own the license and haven't done a thing with it. :/

---- Puzzle ------------------------------------------------------

Tetris/Dr. Mario - Nintendo would want people to buy Dr. Mario Online Rx, especially since that comes with its own great viral marketing tool so that Nintendo fans can do what Nintendo won't and sell their friends on WiiWare.

Awesome. :lol This reeks "real life hunting" for me... That's sad in fact. This was my whole "B series" SNES games i might not want to pay more than VC price for.

I'll come up with a NES list just for fun.

I was planning on downloading Metal Slug but changed my mind and went with Lost Winds instead.

Then I remembered something.

If you download GameTap(it's free for those who didn't know),then you can play Metal Slug 1 for free. So save yourself $10. By the way, Metal Slug 2 is available to download for free as well.
