Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

Holy shit if JSnake is right. I might be spending 1500 points tomorrow O_O
Has he ever been wrong? I don't really know too much about the guy.

I just know that apparently he is very credible.

Well, here's hoping JSnake is right. He always has been so far.

Tomorrow may actually prove to be an excellent week. Oh, I could complain about SMRPG being the only VC game, but at least it's a good game. And Gyrostarr looks like it's all kinds of awesome.

That's good enough, Nintendo. I'll stop complaining for a week, happy?

JSnake had better hope that Nintendo doesn't get wind of his leaking the release date, though. They're already cracking down on that.

I'm not sure whose battleship is going to be sunk over this--JSnake's, the leaker's, or that of GAF itself if at least one party here is mistaken and/or intentionally fraudulent--but one way or another it's going to be ugly. Now let's just find out if it can be simultaneously ugly and pretty, which would basically describe the situation if SMRPG shows and yet we never get an advance leak again since someone gets canned or blacklisted.

Wait Jiggy I am confused, are you calling ME the leaker? I was just saying JSnake said it is all. I don't know what to believe.

No. >_> I mean whoever's behind releasing this information.

Edit: Side note. If Gyrostarr and Super Mario RPG are released on the same day, that's some fairly fantastic ammunition against people who are defending staggered releases on the basis that NOA has some kind of grand plan involving preventing good games from cannibalizing one another. If a person believes that simultaneous releases can hurt games to a significant degree, then that's problematic in this scenario since Super Mario RPG would have to be considered almost a mortifying amount of sales sabotage against (what at least looks like) an excellent original WiiWare effort.

Of course, my own position--however many times I've stated it already--is that simultaneous releases likely don't hurt very much due in part to the way Wii points are distributed and in part to the indefinite shelf life of downloadable releases. So I get to hold up regardless. ^_^

Ah thank goodness I just loaded up my debit card for Wii points tomorrow. Mario RPG is probably my favorite RPG ever and is the only way I can relate to my square-fanboy friends. Oh, HUELEN10, I dont know if you remember me, but I'm Golfer1023 from Nsider!

THE 4 FOR ALL!

PM sent.

I remember the old old old Nsider back when it was the Chat and BBS. Then it all closed up shop for a few months, a bunch of the old NOAs left (Travis, Mike, Taylor) and began anew and a lot of us original regs left it. I'm sure theres some that stuck around the new one.

Even worse if PSIV is out on the same day.

Hell, I'm still a little ticked that the best 16-bit action game ever (Alien Soldier) was sent to die against Super Mario Bros 3.

WII-KLY UPDATE: ONE WIIWARE GAME AND TWO VIRTUAL CONSOLE GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

June 23, 2008

Everybody loves a classic battle between good and evil. With the latest additions to the Wii™ Shop Channel, your greatest challenge will be choosing where to wipe out the bad guys-in deep space, on mean city streets or in a monster-ridden fantasy world. Whatever the venue, be ready for outrageous enemies and memorable missions you'll relish from beginning to end.

Nintendo adds new and classic games to the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

WiiWare™

Gyrostarr™ (High Voltage Software, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone-Mild Fantasy Violence, 700 Wii Points): Gyrostarr challenges you and up to three additional players to pilot your ships through a series of twisting, turning technoplasma tracks while battling a variety of deadly alien foes at ever-increasing speeds. While fighting and maneuvering, you must collect enough energy to activate the ancient warpgate at the end of each track. Succeed, and you can journey to the next, even deadlier track. Fail, and the gate will slam shut, destroying your ship. Enhance your ship with weapon pickups, coordinate attacks with your friends to fire powerful combined blasts and use your grapple to snag energy and pickups in the midst of combat. Control your ship with the Wii Remote™ controller, Nunchuk™ controller or Classic Controller™, or use the "paired" control system that allows two players to use a connected Wii Remote and Nunchuk or Classic Controller at the same time. Offering 50 levels of intense action, powerful pickups, high-speed bonus levels and mayhem for up to four players, Gyrostarr is a killer arcade challenge.

Virtual Console™

Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Sega Master System, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Comic Mischief, 500 Wii Points): In this platformer from the 1980s, you're Alex Kidd, looking for your lost brother Egle. In order to find your brother, you'll have to contend with the evil Janken the Great, who will send his henchmen and monsters at you to thwart your progress. One aspect of this adventure is that you'll have to play the classic game of "rock, paper, scissors" against the henchmen in order to defeat them. With 16 different levels to conquer in order to save Egle, this classic is sure to test your skills and your wits at the same time.

BURNING FIGHT (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older-Mild Suggestive Themes, Violence, 900 Wii Points): Released in 1991 by SNK, BURNING FIGHT is a side-scrolling hand-to-hand-combat action game. In pursuit of Casterora, leader of a huge syndicate that has escaped from New York to Osaka, the protagonists are three detectives: Duke, Ryu and Billy. Each character fights using a combination of punches, kicks and jumps, plus his own particular special move, activated by simultaneously pressing the jump and attack buttons. These lethal techniques have enormous destructive force, but they also consume a great deal of energy. For this reason, players must use their special moves with skillful timing. Luckily for the detectives, new weapons and additional health can be found by breaking things like phone booths and street signs along the way. A boss, who must be defeated in order to continue the mission, awaits players at the end of each stage. You can also take on the gang with a friend, but beware-attacks by one player can damage the other, so keep an eye on where your partner is in the heat of the battle. End Casterora's reign of terror once and for all.

So, why were folks so sure of Super Mario RPG, again?
I thought that was only confirmed for Japan.

At any rate, is there anything that sets that Neo Geo game apart from other beat-em-ups?

Complaining when the first Alex Kidd, which is awesome, and Gyrostarr, which looks like one of the most promising WiiWare titles, are released? Really?

We didn't get square's inferior predecessor to Paper Mario, obviously.

To be fair I mostly meant "FAIL" in regards to those who said it would be Mario RPG today.

/no problem with what's coming out

/not buying it though

Burning Fight's Ok, but it's on SNK Arcade comp.
eh.... to be fair, we've already been over this a few times in this thread. SNK Arcade Comp is good as a cheap way to check out the NeoGeo games on there.. However there are enough flaws with the emulation, not to mention the non-480p, for none of the games on there to really replace a proper release on the VC. I agree when you stand the compilations up against $9/each they are quite a bargain... but for someone basically interested in owning the actual games (with optional neogeo joystick if you so choose) without having to actually ebay an AES and buy the carts separately, VC will always be the way to go.

Now burning fight might not be the best game to make this argument with... hardly the pinnacle of neogeo gaming. But still... for people who actually want to own the games exactly like they would look and play on a real neogeo, so far VC is the only way to do it (and I am STRONGLY considering importing the NeoGeo controller for this very reason).

Have there been "hands on" comparisons of the Wii SNK Arcade disk and the VC releases, or is this just going from the PS2 release at the moment?

no impressions from the Wii release yet, but as I understand it they are porting the PS2 release as opposed to using D4's emulator.

I haven't played Alex Kidd in years, and I'm too lazy to hook up my Japanese SMS. Perhaps I'll grab it on VC and hope that a fondness for nostalgia doesn't cloud my judgment for the game.

Well, no Super Mario RPG. I guess that guy is off the list of credible sources for good.

I wonder if we will ever get a good series of weeks like the RCR/DD weeks again... I haven't been hyped about VC in a long time now :(

If we delete the Internet Channel from the Wii after we downloaded it for free last year, will we have to pay to redownload it?

Lack of storage space is becoming annoying... no, it IS annoying. :/

No, you keep the license.

Alex Kidd is awesome, I may have to download it just for the memories. Hehe I still remember the music!

And yeah Gyrostarr looks promosing, I thought you guys were looking forward to it? I can't keep up with the bitching/non-bitching anymore. :lol

But I guess its a "Whaaa no Mario RPG?!? Shit week!" thing right?

I don't even know why I get excited on Mondays anymore. Week after week of failure. The fact that we don't even have the original Contra is unforgivable.

You don't have Contra 4 for DS? (Has the original Contra on it.)

Also, this week is awesome because Gyrostarr finally released. Can't wait.

I want SNK to get going on KoF 96 and up though.

Gyrostarr redeems this week. Amazing-looking game.

Still, JSnake has some 'splaining to do, I think.

Is Alex Kidd really that good? I played the Genesis title on the SEGA Genesis Collection for PS2 and thought it was the pinnacle of mediocrity. And the rock-paper-scissors thing replacing boss fights was just stupid.

Somnid - Didn't you say a month ago that we would have all or almost all of the European Hanabi Fesitval titles by now? By my count, we've received none. While I wish you were the one in charge of the North American VC release schedule, I think I have to politely ask you to be more careful in your prognostications since you may be jinxing us. :P

Hey, sorry, I didn't realize anyone cared what I had to say. Most of them are ESRB rated and it at least appeared that this would be the case since we started out with an import week but then nothing. I wonder if Wiiware if holding them back? If that's the case NOA should exhaust the currently lineup or be close to it unless they have a lot more titles than we know about. Maybe then they can refocus on VC. The scarier thought is that they met up with Vectorman and Crackdown in the Abyss but Hudson's never done that to us before.

Are you just saying that because you didn't get a particular game? Super Mario RPG? I wasn't expecting that or anything for that matter so I'm rather pleased to see Alex Kidd in Miracle World. It looks fun, has some good reviews, is only 500 points, and likely small so I'll be getting it.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World (500 points):
4/5 VC-Reviews
9.0/10 IGN

Not to shabby if you ask me.

In some ways it's ridiculus to review VC games, but I didn't have a Sega system until Dreamcast. Is there a site like gamerankings.com or metacritic.com for VC games?

Oh wait, we still have a fucking huge backlog of ESRB rated games!
Actually, do we have a list of the missing ESRB games? I remember the holy RPG trifecta (Ys I&II, Earthbound, Shining Force II) but nothing else comes to mind immediately? :/
