Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

A Black Falcon said:
Actually developed by Hudson... Capcom just published in the US, probably because they likely had the only NES Disney license at the time. Even beyond the license, I have no idea who'd have the license now...

This is actually a port of a computer game ("Strider II" on most systems) that was developed by Tiertex and published by U.S. Gold, and only licensed from Capcom. The computer versions were all Europe-only, we only got the Genesis and Game Gear versions. Do you really think Capcom would have the rights to it? (Either way of course, given its mediocrity, it wouldn't be worth it anyway...)

Mickey Mousecapade, if it's held by Hudson, would likely be no problem aside from the Disney license. As for Strider II...

Wikipedia said:
Strider II is a European-made sequel to Capcom's arcade game Strider released in 1990. The game was published by U.S. Gold (under license from Capcom USA) and developed by Tiertex, and was originally released for various computer platforms (the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum) in 1990.

Magnet Man's stage music is one of my all time favorites in the entire franchise :D

...too bad I already recently bought the MM: Anniversy Collection for PS2. Yeah, the emulation isn't the best, but it sure as hell beats paying for each entry on VC

Wait, what the fuck? NOA didn't accept Bionic Commando?

Were they butthurt over Rearmed and the new next-gen game or something? What a petulant thing to do.

That certainly seems to be the case.

IGN said:
Q: How about the original version [of Bionic Commando], on Virtual Console?

Judd [Capcom]: That also couldn't happen.

Q: Why not?

Judd: I can't say. Let's just say this. If I'm making this, making the next gen one, we have a comic book on the community site, we're doing pod casts -- I've tried to hit every single angle I can, I've pushed this as a new franchise. If it's not on the Virtual Console, you can bet there's a reason for it.

Q: Nintendo doesn't like exploding heads?

Judd: I don't think it's exploding heads.

The whole thing strikes me as rather bizarre. The only way I can see Nintendo turning down Bionic Commando was if Capcom insisted it launch alongside Rearmed and/or the next gen title. Not a decision I would make, but I could see why Nintendo wouldn't want to engage in such cross promotion. Still, the best solution for all parties involved would have been having the original hit VC about three/four/five months prior to Rearmed's launch. Oh, well . . . I wouldn't count a VC release as completely impossible though; the game may still hit in the far off future.

Even that wouldn't make sense to me, considering that Nintendo cross-promoted the much higher-profile release of Metal Gear Solid 4 with their own higher-profile release of Brawl.

Well, from what we've been "told", VC releases are generally NOA/NCL licensing out entire libaries of games from third parties and releasing them according to a cryptic, internal schedule... which implies that third parties have no ability to actually "push" for any particular release date of anything.

Here's the really troubling thing: Bionic Commando, unedited to my knowledge, was rereleased in the GBA Capcom Classics Mini Mix a little over two years ago. So I definitely think it was politics at work.

I'm sure it's possible depending on the situation. Mega Man 1 and 2 appearing in the two months before Mega Man 9 surely was not accidental, I'm sure Capcom willed it that way (not to mention the simultaneous DD release of Mega Man 9). Granted that the set release date seems to be first estimated but only decided the Friday or so before the actual release. I don't think that you can pick a specific date simply because they are working with so many publishers and devs that it could create a lot of chaos with big weeks or small weeks or companies dumping a large amount of games in small time frame. I think Nintendo wants more of a steady flow, with a variety of developers represented in the mix and so it regulates it heavily.

I can't see myself really wanting to go back to NES BC when Rearmed so faithful (and superior) to the original, so NoA can block BC all they want.

I would pay the $1 licensing fee (ala TMNT NES) for Duck Tales or Rescue Rangers. Add into that most of the 16-bit Disney stuff as well (Aladdin, Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion, Mickey Mania, Toy Story, Lion King, etc)

Mirage Studios/Ubi Soft may have accepted only $1 in IP royalties from Konami's revenue post-Nintendo tax, but I somehow doubt Disney would do the same for Capcom's games. Notice that no subsequent VC-eligible TMNT games have been released; I'll bet Mirage and Ubi demanded more. All of these companies are probably squabbling over their share and I'd imagine it's choking off a lot of the flow of titles.

Probably true. Disney knows that their properties are worth a lot and so they will probably demand something unreasonable, especially for things to be sold at $5.

Ok, so recently I purchased and finished Solomon's Key. Holy shit, what a hard game. Satisfying as hell though when you have that 'Eureka!' moment after figuring out the solution.

Anyway, for those who have finished it:

Was it just me or is the last level just, I dunno, stupid? Like, it's not only ridiculous easy, but the puzzle to get rid of the last block was never found previously in the game before. I'm a stickler for games that introduce new concepts at the final stages, and having to use my magic on the enemy spawner just seemed really illogical to me. In fact, I only discovered it by randomly creating blocks everywhere and accidentally hitting it.

How did I miss the fact that Mega Man 3 popped up on VC this week? :O

I will download it as soon as my LBP level is published and Mirror's Edge is beaten.

EU VC update:

-Mega Man 3 (NES)
-Phantasy Star IV (Mega Drive)

What is this "Phantasy Star IV" you speak of? Certainly it can't be one of the best games ever made ... or can it? A RPG so fine that people name themselves after its characters?

...

Time to clean out your fridges, bitches, 'cause the King of Mega Drive is finally here!

Awesome week for Europe.

Here's hoping North America gets Phantasy Star IV soon.

It better not pull a Vectorman or a Mega Man.

would guess that we'll get PSIV on Monday... so only one bad VC week in like 3 months now. not bad. not bad at all.

Still no Secret of Mana. Seriously what the fuck is going on?

About a dozen pages ago, I made the case that Secret of Mana would be the perfect Christmas week title. Nintendo of America might not listen, but it's nice to know Nintendo of Europe still takes their marching orders from me. :lol

I'd buy PS IV if that Sega collection wasn't coming out for PS3/360 early next year.

I'm going to make a prediction...I think we're going to be seeing Phantasy Star IV and Metal Slug 2 tomorrow.

Now watch as my optimism is cruelly crushed. :D

I wouldn't buy any Sega VC game now that they're essentially releasing everything in that PS3/360 compilation for 30$ soon. I was thinking about buying the Shining Force games and then that comp was announced.

Teknoman said:
Yeah i'll probably just wait for the collection for Sega titles.

Also maybe we'll finally get Earthbound for Christmas or something?

I wish I could still be that optimistic.

My birthday is on a Friday this year. Europe to receive Earthbound on December 19th confirmed.

Metal Slug is already on VC (Unless you mean Metal Slug 2?)

Hmm.

Nintendo Channel claims that F-Zero is coming today... which is odd, as both F-Zero and F-Zero X have been released on VC already. Anyone want to make any guesses as to what, if anything, that means?

It also claims the Wii Ware games are Target Toss Pro: Bags and Strong Bad 4: Dangeresque.

I think F-Zero was just a fluke or a very surprise WiiWare title.

So, in just 3.75 hours, we will know what we get today! My guess, is Mario's Super Picross once more!

I NEED THAT GAME!

Edit: Damn, I use the exclamation point mark a LOT!

F-Zero WOULD seem like a fluke, but I'm trying to think of what some NOA flunkie could have mixed up a game code and gotten F-Zero mixed up with...

For that matter, I'm trying to figure out why the Nintendo Channel is showing upcoming WW titles before the official PR.

Because it happened to update at a different time that was earlier.

What F-Zero does it show specifically? F-Zero VC was released 11/19/2006, could easily be a date screw up by mistyping the year. The much more unlikey thing would be something like BS F-Zero Grand Prix.

Castlevania III and Phantasy Star IV would be nice. Or M.U.S.H.A. Or Dragon Slayer. Or Dracula X. Or however many other things we don't have that are still sitting around with ratings or releases in other regions.

It links to the SNES F-Zero video... and, sadly, it does say 11/19 , not 11/17... so yep, it's another date mistake entry.

US gets:

-Space Invaders: The Original Game (SNES)
-Forgotten Worlds (GEN)
-Target Toss Pro Bags (WW)
-Strong Bad Episode 4: Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective (WW)

Can't post the PR since I'm on my Wii at the moment, just go to the press site.

Seriously, there's got to be someone at NoA going:

"Hey, see that Space Invaders Get Even? You want it? Huh? Do ya? Well here you go, here's Space Invaders... THE ORIGINAL GAME! Psyche! Jeez, you fall for it every time..."
