Official bitching about Hudson abandoning VC support. [VC/WiiWare = lost cause]

One NES game -> Bubble Bobble? Bases Loaded? River City Ransom (that's wishful thinking)?
One Genesis game that isn't Shining Force 2 -> Light Crusader
One NEOGEO game that isn't KOF94 -> Top Hunter

Correct. NES game is BB. You got the other two systems as well

Bubble Bobble, rock on. :D It's not an "ultimate awesome" update since there's only one game I want, but I'll take what I can get since at least it's a really good one.

So now it's time to delude myself into the idea of a fantastically earthshaking First Virtual Console Update of 2008. I'm not sure how I'll manage to work up even a decent bit of hype for the non-Christmas Eve, non-New Year's Eve, non-first-update-of-2008 week that January 14th will be, though. How can I get disappointed if there's nothing that could have been (but wouldn't have been) commemorated in the first place? :(

If you have GameTap you're in luck, it's been on there (untranslated) for awhile now.
I've never played a console game that felt right to me on a monitor, unfortunately. :( Not sure why, either.

Who even cares about that Neo game. Honestly. No one. No one will buy that, so why bother. Fucking idiots.

Japanese schedule for January's up and it's pretty great:

FC:
-Devil World

MD:
-Monster World IV

PCE:
-Neo Nectaris (CD Military Madness)

* mouth drooling, especially for MW4 *

Whatever you do Sega, please, please, please localize this game for English consumption. Name your price.

Heh . . . I apparently am tuned in to Nintendo of America's thought process. They need to put me in charge of Virtual Console releases . . . although I probably would make a few modifications to the schedule. :lol Not a bad week, especially since we're simply catching up on three games already released in PAL land.

A translated import Monster World IV release for us would single handily validate the already very much so worthwhile existence of the Virtual Console (S&P etc) and cause me to bitch slap ANYONE who bad mouthed it from that point on for any reason at all.

Bubble Bobble cometh! Huzzah!

Enlighten me on Top Hunter. What kind of game is it? Is it any good? I kind of want to download a Neo Geo game, just for the sake of having a Neo Geo game. >_>

Devil World is a shoo-in for a release over here, but Monster World IV... that might be tough. There's a lot of text, right? I'm guessing it's hints and things that are vital to the gameplay, too.

Oh, and Japan only gets 10 games in January? Think they're dialing back, or just taking a breather?

Love to see both Devil World and MWIV come to these shores... need to sit down and play through the latter on MW Collection one of these days, but an English translation would be oh so much more convenient.

Cool at Mappy coming over, that was one of the first non SMB/DH NES games I have ever played (along with Wild Gunman and Zelda), and I don't really remember much about it other than I don't think I liked it.

And just caught the update of the best game ever (until Brawl) being released next month in Japan, we'll hopefully see it soon after over here. Wonder what they're gonna do about the pack in Hint Book, would be awesome to see scanned in maps included in the User Manual (of course we'll probably get a bare-bones user manual).

Which "over here" do you mean? I could see it being re-released in Japan, but I'm not sure if VC is quite under-the-rug enough for NOA to release a game centered around devils and crosses.

I'd have to imagine that at least Nintendo and Sega are winding down the current systems (Hudson seems to have almost completely shifted to Turbo CD). They are producing the bulk of the VC backlog and they have released the majority of their A games. So either they are tapering off or perhaps they might have found more stuff to dig up (Master System, Gameboy etc.) and are working on that. Nintendo at least has Wiiware to worry about and I'd bet the teams are shared with VC. D4 really needs to get off their asses though, they have a ton of stuff but they've been really slow about it (2 month break for NeoGeo and 9 month delay for MSX?) They can do better.

I think Kobun meant North America, considering he mentioned Monster World IV's massive amount of text as being an issue.

Honestly, I don't think Nintendo would have as much of an issue with re-releasing Devil World as they have previously. They're letting its cameo in Brawl go unchecked and they allowed Devil's Crush on the service. I know Devil's Crush wasn't developed by Nintendo, but the people that Nintendo is worried about offending are the exact same people that wouldn't care that Nintendo didn't develop Devil's Crush in the first place. Besides, Devil World is cartoonish and NES-primitive enough that I think it would get a pass.

I honestly wonder how much text there is in Monster World IV; has anybody here played it to know? If it was like Wonder Boy in Monster World, there wouldn't be that much--but then I think about the jump in script size from Dragon's Curse to WB and realize there might actually be a world of difference.

Yeah, this is beginning to worry me a bit. There's still a lot of stuff I want to see on TG16, and not every bit of it is a CD game.

Is Light Crusader "sick worth getting" as the kids say?
Never played it. It tends to get mixed reviews across the board. What I've heard of it can basically be summed up as "a decent isometric action RPG, but no Landstalker."

Actually, eleven, but not a lot of stuff that can be brought over. Three games (Samurai Ghost, Super Air Zonk, Adventure Island) have already been released in Western territories. Five games were not originally released in North America (Mappy, Devil World, Yie Air Kung Fu, Neo Nectaris, Monster World IV) Only three are likely candidates for North America: Phantasy Star 2, 1080 Snowboarding, and Super R-Type.

I'm curious whether Nintendo is dialing back in Japan as well. They've been averaging between four and five Famicom games per month, and January is in line with that figure. There are typically two Super Famicom titles, but only one this month. And usually one Nintendo 64 game with some months skipped. I think the output for all these systems could be increased, but they'd have to get third parties more involved.

The big reduction in Japan is coming from the TurboGrafx and Genesis. Hudson released between four and seven games per month in 2006. This upcoming January is the first month they've dipped below four games with three. Given the decreasing number of titles to chose from, the slack has to be picked up elsewhere. Ditto for the Genesis. Releasing between three and seven games per month in 2006, Sega has only got two on tap for January 2007. Sega won't be able to match their 2006 totals unless there are more 3rd party Genesis titles released this year or they add additional platforms to the VC.

The NeoGeo is really puzzling. Perhaps they are releasing them in large batches rather than a steady stream? Dunno . . .

Holy shit. I just bought Ai Cho Aniki on the VC today. :lol

Considering it's gay overtones, this game is pretty damn fun. I like the whole fighter spin on the shooting genre.

Aside from the melee combat being incredibly wonky I think Light Crusader is pretty damn neat. If you're a fan of isometric Action RPG puzzle solving and have already played through Land Stalker 150 times I see no reason not to check this out.

800 points is a bit steep though...yech.

I already own Bubble Symphony(which pretty much trounces the original game)...so no need for BB I guess.

Top Hunter? Depends on whether or not it has unlimited continues.

Like Parasol Stars :( I refuse to buy another TG16 game on VC until this is released...

I also want World Court Tennis (world's first tennis RPG), though I'm probably one of the only Wii owners who feel that way.

Back to the subject at hand, though, there are TONS of good NES and SNES games that have yet to be released, and some big N64 games too (Zelda: MM, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, etc.).

KOF 94 was a great buy..

I never really played the first one since i started with KOF 95..

The whole forced to pick a predetermined Team is kinda sucks but the game is emulated really really well and has no loadings at all..

Cant wait for KOF 95, 96, 97, 98 and 99 (well im probably not going to buy all..)

C'mon here, FF1, DQ I-IV? All easier to get into than PS.

First, completely disagree with that statement.

Second, I was coming more from a "what's playable today given what we are now used to," and I'd argue PS over FF and DQ all day for one simple reason: graphics. The graphics, due to the larger range of colors and the style used, hold up far better than FF and DQ have (in my opinion). Graphic an RPG don't make, but if you were to sit people who weren't around for the 8-bit days in front of PS, FF, and DQ (pick any NES one you'd like), I would be completely shocked if people didn't pick PS to play (or help those people get into the game instead of just writing it off due to its 'ugly old graphics').

*Sigh* Another shitty week.

Yeah, Bubble Bobble was great in its day - but I don't know if it has really aged well.

And yet another week without Pro Wrestling. :(

I played through it with a friend about a year ago, I think it is better now than it was then. I will probably pick it up.

WII-KLY UPDATE: THREE NEW CLASSIC GAMES ADDED TO WII SHOP CHANNEL

December 31, 2007 - What are you doing New Year's Eve? Thanks to the Wii™ Shop Channel, you've got some outrageous new options. This week's classic game additions offer brilliant fantasy and crackling action to help you ring in '08. So if you haven't made any New Year's resolutions yet, allow us to suggest a few: pop more bubbles, battle more medieval beasts and try to save the universe a little more often.

Three new classic games go live at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo adds new games to the Wii Shop Channel every Monday. Wii™ owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points™ to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:

BUBBLE BOBBLE® (NES®, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): BUBBLE BOBBLE's release in 1986 introduced the two bubble dragons, Bub and Bob, and brand new play mechanics, with players defeating enemies by trapping them in bubbles and then popping them. Although the puzzle-action game can be beaten by clearing all 100 rounds, it also contains secret elements such as not being able to get the "true ending" in single-player mode; hidden commands that lead to secret rounds; and a ton of different items. These elements are some of the game's most memorable and important features. Each round even has different air currents that are not visible, so bubbles rise in unpredictable patterns. Aspects like forcing players to understand and utilize these different patterns while playing help make this a revolutionary game that is fun to play anytime.

Light Crusader™ (Genesis, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone-Animated Violence, 800 Wii Points): Each day, more good townspeople of Green Row have been mysteriously disappearing, and beleaguered King Weeden summons the knight Sir David to investigate. Armed with his wits and his sword, Sir David must find the cause of this strange evil and save the citizens of Green Row before things get any worse. Take the role of the brave knight in this action RPG and get to the bottom of the mysteries of Green Row as you fight enemies, solve puzzles and use your best combination of brains and brawn to save the kingdom.

TOP HUNTER (NEOGEO, 1-2 players, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and older-Cartoon Violence, 900 Wii Points): Take on the role of either Roddy or Cathy, bounty hunters in this side-scrolling action game set far in the future when humans have colonized space. But all is not well: Space pirates called the Klaptons are making their way through the galaxies, wiping out peaceful settlements along their path. This disgraceful behavior leads to them having a price on their heads, so now Roddy and Cathy must travel through four distinct worlds on a mission to defeat their leader, Captain Klapton. Both characters have retractable arms-used to grab enemies or other objects in the scenery-that can then be thrown at others to destroy them. Also, be on the lookout for rings or levers to pull, as this might reveal special bonuses. Further adding to the mix, the game uses a unique system where the action happens on two planes, with the player switching between them at will. Can you prove yourself worthy of the Top Hunter name and help save the universe?

Bubble. Motherfucking. Bobble.

Thank you Nintendo, and with that, all my doubts about my Wii purchase have disappeared.

On a side note, can they really not make a 3D Bubble Bobble puzzle game o' fun?

Nintendo Executive #1: So, all the big Virtual Console buyers are threatening to cut off their spending if we don't give them an HDD. What should we do?
Nintendo Executive #2: I know! Let's just start releasing week after week of games no one even wants to buy to begin with! That'll show them.

So it's Bubble Bobble and Top Hunter for me .... not too bad.

Is BB very far from the arcade version, graphics-wise?

Arcade BB is much better - cleaner, more colorful, etc. - if you ask me. NES BB is fine if that's all you've ever known, though.

Lots of these 'shitty' releases are worth a look, people just bitch if its not Earthbound or bloody Mega Man every week till they get it... then when they do they'll just switch to some other game they can bitch about Nintendo not releasing till they do.

Its been the same routine all year.

With the over-reactions around here sometimes you would think we're only getting lolVCshovelware Urban Champion and Home Improvement SNES type games to buy every week.

The storage space gripe is totally valid though and I'll be first in line to shout my displeasure with the current situation. >_<
