With the start of the college football season tomorrow...it's probably time to start a thread!

The season kicks off with Indiana State at Miami (OH), but the REAL marquee game is #1 USC at Virginia Tech in the BCA Classic. Although USC is currently an 18.5-point favorite, do they deserve THAT much of an edge? It's been a tough week for the Trojans -- Mike Williams got the news that he is not eligible to play any more college football, and the team has also been embroiled in a sexual assault scandal.

Is USC ripe for an upset, opening on the road with all these distractions? Or do they cover the spread and crush VT?

I already have my Clemson season tickets. But like Matlock said, I'm not gonna be REALLY excited about college football until next weekend.

Clemson season tickets, eh? Nice.

I figure I'll go to the home games at Kent...

09.11.2004 Sat LIBERTY (Celebrate America Day) Kent, Ohio 7 p.m.
09.23.2004 Thu AKRON (Flash Mania) Kent, Ohio 7 p.m.
10.16.2004 Sat MARSHALL (Homecoming) Kent, Ohio 4 p.m
10.30.2004 Sat OHIO Kent, Ohio 4 p.m.
11.13.2004 Sat EASTERN MICHIGAN (Senior Day) Kent, Ohio 4 p.m.

About the biggest team out of all of 'em would be Marshall, but eh. Should be fun.

"I'm 2-1 against you bitches. What do you got to say to that?"

Yeah, our biggest home games this year are NC State and Maryland, aside from our rivalry game against South Carolina.

Next year should be really exciting though, as we get FSU, Miami, and UVA at home. Good times.

As a UCLA alumnus -- and as a fellow Giants fan -- may I be the first to offer you a hearty "good luck" at handing USC their first defeat of the season? ;)

thanx...I'm so pumped for this game..even though I know chances are USC could really run up the score, part of me is hoping for a repeat of our game against Miami last year...playing like our hair was on fire...

Dwayne Jarrett's a freshman though so he might not be there just yet...he's got the size and speed though..could be real dangerous...

I don't think USC is going to be running up the score... the offense has issues - only a few returning starters and a very raw offensive line. Jarrett is sure to be good, but it might be too early - even Mike Williams had trouble in his first game (on the road vs. K-State - lots of drops). I think the team is going to have to focus on running the ball - Reggie Bush & Lendale White. The defense is really going to have to carry the team, though. And Randall should be pretty tough to handle.

Maybe I'm too pessimistic, but this offseason has been pretty grim (when you're losing important players to weird things like pick-up basketball game injuries and pellet gun related arrests, you start to get worried) - I'm just glad that the season is finally starting.

Anyway, this should be a fun season. Miami / Florida State coming up soon with a monday night game... that's going to be cool.

I think USC's offense, or at least the passing game, will have some issues early on this season. However, I can't see Tech running on So. Cal's defense very effectively. The Hokies will probably make something happen on special teams, and Randall will play his heart out, but they'll come up short.

USC 27, Hokies 17. If they still had Kevin Jones, I might pick Tech to win this.

Actual, competitive football for the first time since the Super Bowl starts in a mere 11 hours! Thank you football gods!

18 points is a little much I think, I'm going with the Hokies. Everybody has been thinking about how great USC was last year, and they were, but surely missing all those offensive players and opening up across the contintent will slow them down a little.

USC 23
VT 13

Edit: Go to hell LSU.

I'll be at the first college football game of the year!

Of course it's against Indiana State, Miami's first non Division IA opponent since 1982, but, well, we got a new scoreboard this year and we need to test how high it count.

Besides, its a tune up for Michigan next week. Gotta bring the nation's longest winning streak to the big house.

::suspects no one really wants to talk Redhawk football with him anyway::

Oh, and I'm rooting for Virginia Tech.

He goes to all the Memphis games (basketball too) and takes off his shirt in the last seconds if Memphis is going to win. They always put him on the Jumbotron. I wish I were making this up.

Well, that's dodging a bullet. Forget about the spread, I'm just glad to see a W - this could have gone the other way pretty easily. Randall was pretty hardcore in this game, and almost killed off USC. Reggie Bush saved things, and made Leinart look good. He's still sketchy as a running back, though, too indecisive (White was better). He was the best reciever on the field tonight, though (which is probably a bad sign for USC's passing game).

fucking interference call...what was that?!?...still might have lost but that bad call killed that drive..instead of 1st and 10 near the 20 we were back behind the 50...still a good game..X Adibi's injury hurts more than this loss though...he's one of our stud Fr. LB's...

I was watching at a sports bar so I really couldn't hear what they were saying, but they replayed that play like 10 times and every single time I saw him push off.

That was a pushoff, good call. USC looked shakey, but it's the first game, and VT is underrated this season. They're gonna collect some losses this year, but the ACC is stacked this year. If Randall can play like this all year and work on his accuracy, he'll be considered for a Heisman. It's nice to see that command early in the season, but then again, it's just the first game.

I think USC will definitely drop this year. Leinart is better than I give him credit for, and they've still got some weapons. But their defense didn't look impressive tonight. I don't think it's just rust either. Can't wait until next weekend. Canes - Noles! And Chris Leak kickstarts his campaign for the Heisman trophy this year. This is Zook's last chance to prove he can coach this team. They don't have much in the way of receivers apparently this season, but that can be coached around. PEACE.

Pushoff? They could call that literally every play if they wanted to. In my experience, 9 times out of 10 offensive pass interference calls are bullshit. I can recall some especialy egregious examples that were called against Ole Miss.

Offensive interference should be called a lot more than it is. Either that, or cut back on the ticky-tack defensive interference calls.

damn. florida st. vs miami on september 6th? talk about rendering a game useless.

give me my first week of october setting again.

How is the Miami/FSU game useless? It's the first conference game by both, and sets the tone for the "team to beat" in the ACC.

Personally I'm tired of seeing FSU kick a FG "wide right (wide left last year for a change)". Perhaps the change of date will liven up the series. When's the last time you saw a conference decided in September?

Man y'all should hear the FSU fans cussing Rix online. Whenever I play somebody who's using FSU and Rix throws an incompletion, they always start cussing him and everything he stands for.

fuck. forgot about that. so, yeah, it should be worthwhile, then. and when the fuck is rix gonna graduate? if i see him choke in one more big game i think i might jump off a bridge. his inconsistency kills me.

Rix, FSU player, graduate? Doesn't compute :D

Seriously though, it sucks having the game be the first game for both teams, it would be nice for them to have a warm up. The game might be a little ugly at the beginning, but hopefully it will heat up at the end.

Shut the hell up. Did you miss the FSU vs UF game last year? FSU was losing with 3 minutes left and Rix brought his team down the field, scored the touchdown, and won the game!

What a guy Rix is!

I remember him coming up to Clemson last year and getting the ever living shit drubbed out of him.
