Official Destiny Alpha Withdrawal Thread

My name is Tinfoilhatsron. I'm a Destiny addict and I'm suffering from withdrawl. I only knew the alpha for 2 days, but... it left quite an impression on me. Both the SP(Mmo) and MP were fun, the graphics beautiful. I now pre-ordered it on the ps4.

How Destiny was for me;

  • This is more Borderlands.
  • I don't want more Borderlands.
  • Borderlands was an OK game.
  • This is like Halo meets Borderlands.
  • This is a Halo Borderlands MMO.
  • OH GOD I NEED TO GO TO BED.

I ended up playing nothing but multiplayer. I don't like how lopsided the primary guns ended up being in PVP, with the starter Auto-rifle being my goto gun, but I got used to it.

Wasn't going to purchase; is a day 0 buy now.

Has there been any talk about death penalties? I might have been letting the MMO influence affect me a bit, but it seemed strange that there weren't any penalties for dying (you even get rewarded, with full primary ammo).

Question for everyone; would love to see what GAF chose:

1.) What class did you find most appealing? Why?

2.) What race did you pick? Why?

For me:
1.) Warlock because as much as I enjoyed playing with the Titan, I just didn't like the Titan's powers. Also, I really like the Warlock grenade power. For whatever reason the Hunter didn't click for me, though I did really like the feel of the double-jump.

2.) I went Exo. I love robots and I loved their look. Was difficult to imagine picking anything else. I hope there are some good lore hooks for the different races or some other racial benefits.

1. Hunter. I don't really like the hunter's super compared to the others, but I love having the knife for melee and it's incredibly satisfying to throw it in someone's face in the middle of a big firefight. I never unlocked triple jump, but double jump felt good and I liked it a bit more than the other two.

2. I created a human male, a human female, and an Exo male. I liked the customization options of all the races, but I tend to play humans in most games I have the choice and didn't see much reason to change that here. I liked the look of the Exo, but in the end I still preferred my human characters. I'll probably try an Awoken in the beta, but I'll likely stick with human on launch.

What are the chances this becomes bigger than Halo? After playing the alpha, it reaffirmed my feelings that Microsoft letting go of Bungie was a huge mistake.

Destiny will be a bigger game with wider appeal, but Halo is still going to be a bigger franchise. If we're talking in terms of multiplayer, I don't think Destiny is going to take that throne from Halo, especially with the games that held it coming back this year.

Although if we want to get technical, Bungie is still behind all of it.

Yup. I finished Watch_Dogs and TR2013 before E3 week started, and it looks like I'll have to go back to my PS+ back catalogue until the beta comes out. At least PS3 has a fairly solid community still playing Payday 2...

Fuck Overkill/Starbreeze for not supporting the console version of this game, when PC is still getting new DLC for it.
Well good news for you as the ps3 and 360 will be getting the dlc and updates pretty soon. Check twitter.com/overkill_tm

As for the alpha I thought it was fun though I didn't have friends to play with so I didn't get the full experience.

Not a competitive arena shooter like Halo at all. I got vibes that it's a decent game. I didn't get to play it much since it was so short and conflicted with my schedule, but I plan to give it some more time during the beta.

Considering it is on more than one platform I think it has the potential. If Bungie ports to PC then look out, I think it becomes a Mega Franchise.

500 million dollars, 10-year deal with Activision (guaranteed unless the first game really bombs). What more do you need?

Halo was huge because of competitive multiplayer. Destiny won't ever be that. As a single player/co-op experience, it will be far more popular than Halo imo. Now it has the added benefit of being a multiplat and also being semi-open world and an MMO-lite. There's so much goodness here. I was surprised at how little interest there was for the Alpha on Twitch though. Perhaps the lack of content bored viewers.

I got separated from my fireteam and started exploring the place. Before I know, I exit at the entrance of the Cosmodrome, and face a highway covered in ruined cars. The sun was just rising, and there was no music.

No exaggerations here, but it was one of the most poignant moments I've experienced on a video game. There was no explanation for it, no voiceovers or text. The environment along told the story of all those deaths.

Amazing work by Bungie.

It could be huge for different reasons, I agree that the competitive doesn't really stack up against Halo, but look at something like World of Warcraft or Minecraft. Those games aren't huge because of competitive multiplayer.

More content than the Alpha but nothing specific was mentioned

Why not?

Halo had the added benefit of not competing with Battlefield and CoD.

I agree. I think Destiny is going to be huge because of, for lack of a better phrase, competitive co-op. I love trying to get more kills and more precision deaths on the Strike missions than my squadmates. The social aspect of Destiny is going to attract a lot of gamers, I think. How long they stick around will depend on how long Bungie keeps supporting the game with new content.

I don't know about taking things away from players (seems to go against Destiny's inherent philosophy), but I do think that deaths should be more discouraged. Then again, when the only way to earn ammo is to hope an enemy drops it or to respawn, players are going to opt for the more consistent option.

Somewhat related, but I think Legend difficulty needs to be more difficult. It's really just Brave with bigger and more frequent bullet sponges. They don't have to do anything drastic, but something as simply as disabling respawns after the timer goes down would go a long way to discouraging reckless play and encouraging strategy. So if you die and aren't revived in 30 seconds, you'll only respawn when all other enemies in the wave are killed (kinda like what they did with Firefight in ODST). They could even take the revive timer down to 20 seconds. This seems to be a popular suggestion, so I'm looking forward to seeing what changes they implement in this area.

Watching the 2013 E3 reveal again, they had the warlock using a knife and the fallen emerging from holes in the wall etc.. a few other changes. I hope they put that back in. The mini boss had way more personality also.

As much as this game has in common with PSO I'd love to get my hands on some "enemy parts" weapons ala "Delsabers arm".

At least let us get our hands on that sick sniper rifle the fallen dude in the beginning uses.

You can buy consumables that refill your ammo from the Weaponsmith. This is the most efficient (if expensive) way of refilling ammo.

The Death Penalty is time lost either in DPS or in a complete reset of the fight. Which for a console game is more than enough I think. Unlike traditional MMO players, console gamers aren't quite as used to the length of time that these encounters can take. I imagine a LOT of people will complain even more than they have during Alpha about "bullet sponge" bosses and "strikes/raids take way too long" upon release. If Bungie stacked even more loss to death (money, items, etc..) then rage quits and hyperbolic "this sucks!" posts will be way too plentiful.

Hey, this is perfect, I literally just posted in the old one. I am desperately missing it right now.

What I said earlier:
Ehhh. Ever since the Alpha ended, I've been trying to get into my old games and it just isn't working. It is World Cup time and I don't even feel like FIFA, I was having so much fun in Destiny. I've hopped into the Hardline Beta and I am pretty sure I've run out of things to do.

I am unpleasantly surprised by the amount of enjoyment I had playing that game, I just want to go back and sink in, mess around with friends or something. I have a bad taste in my mouth not having a game I really want to play to balance this out.

Oh hey, did anyone look up those details from when the IW lawsuit hit and ended up forcing the Destiny details out in the open? It's kind of funny/surprising looking back and seeing that the game was initially meant to be an Xbox timed exclusive... though it DID get delayed to 2014 obviously, and I do have to wonder if that either escaped that exclusivity window, or if the fact those details came out forced Sony to double down and offer a good enough offer to break that exclusivity.

It's going to be a long month. I really liked what I played. I mostly did Patrol and ran around hoping for a public event. The first couple of days, nobody could take down Devil Walkers, but we we were killing them in a couple of minutes by the end. I also noticed that the Strike bosses went down much faster in the last day. The bosses aren't so bullet spongy if you know where you should be shooting them.

I also just wanted to point out that music that plays in the Tower that sounds like your neighbor playing piano on a quiet day. It's so hauntingly familiar. I just love that.

I leveled all 3 classes to 8. I think Hunter is the best class. It has a Star Wars bounty hunter kind of look and the double jump is my favorite jump of the 3. My 2nd favorite is the Titan. They're basically Master Chief. Warlocks are not bad, but they're my least favorite of the 3. They're kind of the Jedi of Destiny. I don't like their melee special and their jump isn't as good as the other 2.

It's going to be a long month.

Anyone know if Bungie has released any decent chunk of lore on the game? I seem to only get small bits of writing and occasional statements from interviews from the (poorly written in its current state) Destiny Wiki. I'd really like to dig into some info, but everything's been so cryptic up to this point. It's my only remaining worry; the story is thin right now because they don't want to reveal too much too far away from launch, or there's just not going to be a very deep fiction.

question: i still haven't preordered the game, I'm thinking on preordering it this week but I'm kinda confused on 1 small thing. If i preorder trough gamestop do i still get access to the beta or do i have to preorder trough the PSN store?

i haven't been to gamestop in a while and ive seen in the PSN store that it says "Preorder: for beta access"

Go with PSN so you don't sell it and regret it later. You also won't have to use a physical disc each time you want to play. Anyone else feel good about that? I liked just turning my console on and loading a game.

The nature of their intent for storytelling in this game really means that there won't be a ton of lore released before the game. It will pretty much all be relayed through the gameplay and the Grimoire (on Bungie.net). We start at a point where society as we know it has been holed up in the city under the traveler for so many centuries and that societies devastation by the Darkness and it's creatures was so bad.. there's little more than tales of a time long ago, when things were different.

This game reminds me of Stephen King's The Dark Tower a bit. I got that vibe when I played the Alpha.

I sunk way more hours into the alpha than I have many games I've paid $60 for; also don't believe I've ever had as much fun simply playing the same area in a game before.

Was already quite excited for it (I actually enjoyed the gameplay videos they released), but the many hours spent in the alpha just put it over the top.

Had already pre-ordered at Amazon but will be canceling and going with the PSN version thanks to the pre-loading. Want to play the game as soon as it becomes available; taking a bit of a gamble though as Amazon often delivers new releases on Monday. I'm going to just operate under the assumption that Destiny wouldn't arrive until after noon on the 9th.

Got over 30GB of my gameplay saved on PS4 though, and yes I will be watching them a few times between now and the beta.

I'm waiting for the beta before I decide if I want this or not. The alpha just didn't have much in it. Sorta feel like I'm lost on why you guys loved it so much.

I didn't play any PvP, but I don't really like competitive mp, so that's not really gonna swing me.

Exactly one month to wait.
I need to work overtime anyhow so thanks I guess?

Great, great Alpha dear Bungie. Strikes <3

I sunk more time into Destiny Alpha than I have inFamous, MGS5 GZ, Watch_Dogs, Wolfenstein & Tomb Raider combined (my 2014 games so far).
Less than 10% of final content you say? Jesus.

Really glad to hear the game is turning out to be great. That thread yesterday with the "post your X/10 score before and after the alpha" was telling. Never seen so many turnarounds like that. I love loot, can't wait for this.
