It was a world ending cataclysmic event and for once The Doctor wasn't around to do anything about it. Seeing frail humans go up against an alien race and nearly fail was refreshing change for the Torchwood/Doctor Who universe. The more focused story made for a better narrative and I loved that the stakes were raised for the Torchwood team.

Just tacking on a family for Jack out of nowhere only to kill his Grandson seemed forced and really diminished my enjoyment of the narrative.
Once again, Gwen saved it, she had a great story herself in the mini-series and her little speech about Jack's "Doctor" was great.

Children of Earth certainly had it's problems, but it was far more even quality wise than previous torchwood seasons, I enjoyed it even if it wasn't perfect. The constant attempts to kill Jack were fun and the longer format allowed them to do more with the plot. While I think of it a lot of s5 episodes could have done with longer episodes.

The adult themes were far better than "lol sex alien" of some episodes and I know many people found the
kids as drugs
concept very dark.

I was in Cardiff shortly after it aired and there were loads of letter and flowers left on the Torchwood door for
Ianto
which was fantastic. Actually the cast arrived just outside the flat I was staying in, jumped out of a helicopter and signed lots of stuff.... when I was out >_< hahah.

The thing that really hooked me into Children of Earth was the political story. The scenes of discussing how to handle the "units" were chilling.

After checking out Wikipedia I think I missed more Torchwood that I actually watched (I had thought I had seen a lot more). The really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really bad episodes must have tuned me off more than I suspected.

Yeah that what grabbed me more into the story than anything else. Politicians always trying to cover their butts.
And the Prime Minister telling Mr. Frobisher he would have to sacrifice his own children was chilling.

Even as a tale of science fiction the children of Earth was very very dark especially the ending.

These types of episodes really played to Tennant's strengths. The director was not afraid to take off the leash and let him act. He was fantastic in these. I'd really like to see him in another movie or series.
I do hope you've seen his "Casanova"?

"Hello, I'm David. I'll be taking you from behind in a minute."

No sign of WW today. Think the series 3 finale did him in.

Still here. I was watching the WC and doing some other junk. I'm throwing it on now.

EDIT: Well, this is a fucking stupid ass start to an episode.

....what the fuck Alien Gerber Baby. This is what Time Lords look like? Gollum's stunt double? No wonder he never gets laid.

Martha as Linda Hamilton is stupid. She's about as badass as a penguin. Why did they have to frame this as a stupid resistance episode? What the hell is the point of this? OH NO THE WORLD IS SO COMPLETELY BORKED. Except, you know, the world looks just fine actually.

Oh, unless you're a black person. Then you're a janitor, a maid or different kind of maid. I half except The Master to make one of them soft shoe across the floor.

Oh, nice the little kid is a head in an orb.

...really, you old bitch? The Master has taken over the world and you just found out he's tearing the heads off of people and shoving them in deadly soccer balls, but you want to moralize to the guy who wants to shoot him in the fucking head? DIE.

Nice Deus Ex Time Lord gun. That was spread across the world, for some damn reason. What, they couldn't make more than 1 weapon?

Wait till The Master makes them sing the Camptown Ladies

WW is like watching a train wreak over the course of 40 minutes :lol :lol :lol

Sorry, British folks, but you guys do not understand guns. For instance, if there is a bad guy who you want to kill with one, you do not need to charge at them screaming "NOOOOOO" at the top of your lungs.

Generally, just shooting them is advisable. Just FYI.

I actually don't mind Last of the Time Lords, even though it makes no sense. But it's definitely the weakest New Who finale.

....no, fuckers. You bring back Tinkerbell by clapping and saying her name. Not the Doctor. Jesus Christ this is dumb.

OMG DOCTOR HAX. :lol

Really. You beat the Master with the power of love? Who wrote this shit? I need addresses, people.

His girlfriend shot him. For absolutely no reason. She was completely on his nuts 10 seconds ago.

I guess the writer really wanted to kill him but couldn't have a "good guy" do the deed. Okay.

Oh, cool. Time Lords are now either Jedis or Vikings....funeral pyre's are so hot right now.

Imagine how awesome she'd have been if she hadn't been in any episodes at all.

I laughed harder at this than anything I've seen today.

Well it doesn't get much better after that finale.

I didn't like the christmas special with Kylie Minogue.

...wait. So the rest of the episodes are worse than this one?

EDIT: So, what I'm hearing is to just stop watching now? K.

No no, watch it. Just don't get your hopes up. And bring some earplugs for when the new Banshee companion talks.

You stay with Doctor Who until this season DAMMIT! You could skip the next season, but there is some okay stuff (Moffat 2 parter, an actual decent RTD script), so just watch. You have come this far!!!!

Season 4 is pretty stupid but it's more spread out, rather than one concentrated 2 parter of stupid.

S4 has another four episode chain-of-epic with the Library eps, Midnight, and Turn Left.

nah dont give up, but you might want to be a bit selective about what you watch, it gets very patchy untill season 5 starts

Turn left was really a downer, it was supposed to be but still.

I'm kidding, it was fucking awesome. I loved seeing something like that, you never see that kind of scenario in any other type of show or comic or game.

Library was amazing just because of who it introduced.

Midnight was good because it didn't have much Donna, but it wasn't an amazing "doctor lite" episode like Blink was.

Turn left was awful because
Everything that retcon's Rose being stuck int he alternate universe sucked. Kills the impact of the S2 finale

Ugh. That last episode was really, really bad. I should have listened to you and skipped it entirely. I'll start the next season tomorrow. I haven't the heart for it tonight.

EDIT: But season 5 is okay? That'll be a problem though, considering there is no way to actually watch that right now.

I will say one good thing about Donna. The season 4 premiere was really really silly fun. Would have been a good special.

You'll be able to handle the upcoming season easily since you've sat through the last three. Do you have BBC America? They are constantly showing the newest season on repeat.

Season 5 is so far and away the best it may as well be a different show.

The head writer for S5 is Steven Moffat, who also wrote "Blink," the episode you're currently sporting as your avatar.

Season 5 is brilliant. The guy the wrote "Blink", "The Empty Child"/"The Doctor Dances" "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead". (which is part of season 4) is the new lead writer for the show, and the season is very much a reboot for the series. Instead of just changing the cast a bit, it changes it tone, filming techniques, humour, story arcs styles and a while lot more.

The guy the wrote the episode you just watch, Russell T Davis, has been the lead writer for the past 4 years beofre him

I don't. I just found that out when I was trying to watch the WC on anything besides American channels. Didn't effect it at all, but still...

Those 4 are the best, and maybe the Ood episode, but I don't remember if that was worth it... the rest is mediocre at best.

Ood return? SWEET!

I would recommend just outright skipping The Sontaran Strategem, The Poison Sky, and The Doctor's Daughter. They really just aren't good at all, and there's only one bit of info you need to take away from them:

After S3, Martha is recruited by the govt. because of her alien knowhow.
