Official Final Fantasy XII (JPN) Thread (read RULES in the first post)

I just think that the questions that user posted should have used spoiler tags. Not everybody DOES know how many party members are in the game. Not everybody wants to know, either. Because otherwise, people will start talking about things from all over the game after a certain amount of time and can potentially give stuff away to other people participating in the thread at a slower pace.

Even simple questions like those that were asked openly. I'm not reading the topic for information/assistance yet. I can easily skip that type of stuff if it is spoiler tagged. Those questions weren't and I saw him say the # of party members as if it were 3-year old information.

Just read the post under mine, some stuff is spoiler tagged while other information (name of first town probably) is not. It's already begun, the slowly 'un-tagging' of stuff.

Just played for 45 min...

WOW. this game is SPANNUDDD!!!! Rabanstre is amazing. Everything seems so alive and big. Love the stores and the new map also.

earlier in the thread Srider said that
the person who was following Basch was Vann's brother... was I suppose to know this during that cutscene of within those 45 minutes? Also can someone help me know a lil more whats goin on? I know that Basch killed the king since he sold Dalmasca to Archadia, but why did he kill Vanns brother? (unstated maybe?)
Also I just started playin as Vann and whats goin on with him right now? I think i need to find a tomato monster :lol (I'll just follow the red X's)

I don't know how many members are in the game yet, and I don't know it until you posted it (and I replied), really. To me, I don't care the number of members as long as the plot/story is not spoiled, I will not even think about which members are in the game (except those that I already knew from old info). I do agree that the number might be spoiler to some.

And about the save points, the pictures are very minor info and more related to gameplay than plot/story IMHO, they are on the map.

Well those
6
party members have been known about for quite some time (like, for over a year), the guy was just asking if there's more than that, and I personally hope there is.

I haven't known about the number, due to trying to avoid as much info as I could. They have been known by those looking for the information. Not everyone interested/playing the game has been looking for the information. So people shouldn't assume that everyone in this topic knows that stuff. Common courtesy.

I'm not a story/plot person, so the gameplay ones/stuff like # of party members is what bugs me more; opposite is true for you.

Stuff that bugs you : Stuff that bugs me
Big uber event in game : what spells/abilities are in the game

I'm just requesting that people make things safe for both sides of the coin. I don't care why the last boss is bad and evil, but I'd do my best at not giving it away. I can only ask that people do the same for gameplay stuff, too.

I know I am in a very small minority here, but I'd like the same consideration if possible.

Wait... you can play with
6
in the same battle? Otherwise... you're just talking about main characters right?

Vaan, Ashe, Balthier, Basch, Fran, Panelo. I thought everyone knew these were the characters.

So, without giving too much a way, on a scale of 1 - 10 how good a character is Vaan? Bad as Tidus?
Vann seems kool so far. i give him an 8.

Anyways, got some gameplay questions. I just got whooped by a T-rex.. :D Is there anyway to tell the strength of an enemy w/o getting attacked?

Also is there a way to perform these 2 hit combos without luck? or is it like a block which is just luck?

is that better?

Thanks Blim, dunno if I should download them just yet or not but I am compelled to.

I've stopped playing just to wait for some semblence of a guide to pop up somewhere.

edit: 2nd link doesn't seem to want to connect, just pops up a blank page but maybe it's just me.

And my co-worker is annoying as shit too, trying to spoil what's up ahead. What a prick.

Yes, you are supposed to know this, one of the first questions Basch asks reveals that Vann is his 2 years younger brother. Later on when you meet up with Basch again, he reveals that (further spoiler) the Basch that killed Vann's brother is someone that looks exactly like Basch. You will see the actual events in a later cut scene. You should have noticed Basch's voice was strange, and his face had some subtle differences.

Also, you can tell the strength of the enemy by using the library skill. Once you activate it for a character, you can use the left and right directional pad to select enemies and see their health. Another thing to note is the onscreen color of the health gauge tells you if they are aggressive or not, red being aggressive, green being not.

Ok, so FFXII is the best game ever...except one thing has been bugging me this entire time....

The sound is f@#ked in the Japanese release

http://s12.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0EE4092X612HY0A1VZROVOYSD8

Here's a quick wav I just ripped while standing still somewhere. If you listen to it a decently high volume (like you would if you were playing) you'll notice that besides the static, there's also crackling and just random crappy noise throughout.

That's how almost the majority of music tracks and voices sound in the game

No doubt to get this game to fit on a single dvd, especially with all the FMVs it has, they had to compress the hell out of all the audio in the game music & voices.

The result is that sometimes I'll be watching some important scene and the characters stop talking for a second to think about something and all you hear is STATIC AND CRACKLING. It's fairly annoying if you have a good sound system and it does take you out of the game a bit.

I've tried with both analogue sound and optical sound and it's the exact same. At first I thought it was my sound system speakers and some wire problem, but then I stuck it into the PC to capture and it sounds the exact same. The audio is just ass, which is really annoying considering how good the music and voice acting is.

I don't see them fixing it for the US release or a re-release in Japan because it's not like they can just put the game on two discs and give the audio less compression. That'd be waaay more effort than they'll spend. DVD9 is out of the question because they can't do that anymore (I get the feeling Sony made companies stop after lots of PS2s had trouble with them). So yeah, unless they re-release it on X360 or PS3, the best game ever will always be slightly dampered by bad sound :(

Sooooooooooo, how would you guys say the battle system compares to something like ToS's? How heavily is it based on timing/reflexes?

I think the problem is the high compression to accomodate the game on a single layer DVD.

Maybe Zilch will get TP spoiled for him.

At least it's
one DVD. Now you won't really know when the game will end like FF7-9 gave it away with their multiple discs.

Ugh. Hopefully these problems will be addressed with the US version with more efficent compression.

They might end up messing with the sample rate like they did in DQ8. Pay close attention to DQ8's voice acting, it has a dithered sound to it.

Square should have used Vorbis for the voice files. :D

Actually, it's sony's S-force ATRAC3 compression isnt it? I just noticed it on the case earlier today and was wondering how it turned out.. apparently bad D:

Doesn't sound that bad to me. Probably won't be "fixed" in the US version (recompressing a shitload of audio files would take a while, plus who knows if they still have the uncompressed files). Wonder why they went with single layer instead of DVD-9.

spoiler question about limit break-type attack skills

ummm, I got my first mist~~~ attack and they seem so overly powerfull that they break the game. I fought this boss fight that was nice and tough and I barely made it through. Yet I re-loaded the save to capture footage of the fight and I used my limit-break type attack and it hit 3 times and killed the boss in a single hit.......wtf!?! What happens if you have all 3 people each do one of these attacks at the start...that would be insane damage that would basically break the game. I mean if a single attack does 100x the damage of normal attacks...why bother using normal stuff?

I think I'm going to avoid ever using these attacks, because I want my boss fights to be fun.

The first of a few videos:
http://www.playsyde.com/leech_2288_1_en.html

Thanks go to Blimblim for hosting all these videos.

This video is a 10 minute collection of cutscenes with FMV and in-game stuff. It's about medium in spoiler level meaning it doesn't have any major spoils for the main story, but if you watch these cutscenes you'll know what will happen when you get to that point in the game.

I mainly took the video because it has judges and judges are cool :D It also does a good job showcasing how downright incredible the character designs are.

Last video for the night:
http://www.playsyde.com/leech_2290_1_en.html

This video is a boss battle including before and after cutscenes. While it's not particularly spoilerish and having seen this won't effect the story at all, IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE A JUDGE'S FACE, DON'T VIEW.

Also the video was supposed to be a video of a long hard boss fight because when I did the fight before capturing it was long and hard and very satisfying. But when capturing I was like "hey, wait maybe I should try this..." and the battle ends REALLY FAST :\

RedScarlet, I apologize if I spoiled any part of the game that you didn't wish to know now. I didn't realize that some people still didn't know the information I posted and I will try to be more careful in the future. Anyways, I marked part of that question as a spoiler now. Now, if only somebody would try answering them. :lol

The story....oh man the story....

The writing is incredibly good. There's no cliche, characters act very intelligently and everyone is badass as hell. The plot is fantastic and definitely feels very huge and epic with tons of characters, subplots, mysteries.

This very much does have the potential to be the best story in a jrpg ever. It's not that often when you get something smart and gritty like Vagrant Story but with the gigantic budget and project size of an FF game.

It's funny because it just makes Nomura and friends look so bad in comparison since KH2 was only a few months ago and tried to do the badass cool route with the hooded guys and stuff, but the non-Disney story was not-smart, not-well written, and not-badass. KH2 in comparison to FFXII is like Ed Wood trying to do Lord of the Rings.

Oh and the FFXII also makes Rouge Galaxy look exactly what it's always been, a really really poor man's FFXII. RG tried to sell itself by saying "hey look what we can do!", yet 3 months later FFXII is doing all that 100x better.

Simply incredible.

The story....oh man the story.... etc etc
Basically what I was expecting, thank christ. The clips you have posted have showed more emotion in the character's faces than anything before it which is really great. Just simple movements of the head, eyebrows and eyes really make it lifelike.

Also I noticed whilst playing that during cut-scenes.. characters don't fucking jump around while standing stationary due to the camera movements. :D

Ok, just put in 3 hours into the game. Here are my non-spoiler impressions:

This game motherfucking rocks. It's everything I expected, no less, probably more. Everything - the textures, the sound effects, the voices, the lip sync, the writing, the gameplay, the open-endedness, the main scenario, the characters, etc - is motherfucking awesome. Basically, as bitching fanboys and gamers we don't deserve this game.

Here are my mildy spoiler-ish impressions with MARKED spoilers (there are no story spoilers or anything but some people are sensitive):

The entire game is fucking alive. In the first city, it's so huge and overwhelming that I have no actually explored every store and corner of it yet. It's huge. The animations are great and it's the best MMORPG city EVER except offline and without the beggers! I'm completely floored by the city.

Dungeons and fields are GREAT as well. Awesome enemy designs and also very varied and sizable. There are a good amount of enemies in each area and very much like MMORPGs, it's completely up to you where you go and what you fight. Whether you'll actually survive is another matter completely. The cataloging in the game is fucking excellent too - there are detailed maps of every area as well as a catalog of every monster you've fought.

Gameplay-wise the game plays very much like you would imagine a offline MMORPG, with GOOD AI, SCRIPTING options, and tons of customizability. Every in the game is vast and epic but yet detailed down to the bricks or sand. Exploration never feels dull and with the right mood and mindset hunting enemies for items and exp will NEVER get dull. Right from the start the game gives a good idea of the various things that will be EATING YOUR PLAYTIME aside from the main scenario. The clan system is excellent and I don't think there's a single RPG player in Ivalice that doesn't love hunting unique varients of enemies for bounty and rewards.

The music is great. Sakimoto is a VERY talented musician and FFXII obviously gave him a chance to show off. The themes are very much like his FFT and VS scores in terms of scale and impact, but much more varied due to the size of the game and the different locations. Voices are great and the lipsync is finally spot-on for a FF game.

On thing I want to devote a entire section to is the HAIR. FFXII has the BEST GODDAMN 3D REALTIME HAIR I HAVE EVER SEEN. Instead of stupid random polygons that stick out, or a bunch of fake looking textures grouped together, somehow the FFXII hair looks NATURAL and GREAT. If a character has long wavy hair that's kinda messy, it looks EXACTLY like that. Every character looks HUMAN and not like some anime character or J-pop idol. It's amazing. Whoever modeled the hair needs to be modeling every videogame hair ever. He needs to write a goddamn HAIR ENGINE!

Okay, that's all for now. FFXII is fucking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU MATSUNO!

After just beating
that electrical boss, and getting Basch
, I wholeheartedly agree. The game is amazing, and has far surpassed my expectations (which I thought could never happen). I'm so damn glad I didn't wait for the US version, as part of the fun is figuring things out on my own, and with other people. This has just been an amazing experience, and I can't wait to get back into in a just a few short hours.

My friend also confirmed it plays alot like KOTOR, and that for me is an instant buy. Thank you square.

+1 Sale (i was not going to buy it until the KOTOR comparison)

I'm quite anal about audio and such, but I honestly did not notice any such thing. I had the volume quite high on my receiver as well, and I thought it sounded really nice. I haven't noticed any problems, but I will check again.

Yeah, it is really damn cool thus far. Easily the best writing I've encountered in a JRPG, as you said (though I've only played through around 10 or so RPGs in Japanese at this point, so my experience is a bit limited). It manages to do both serious and light hearted scenes so beautifully. It's really engaging thus far and I can only imagine how much better it will get.

Without spoiling anything, though, has there been any serious downtime in the story? Ya know, those times when the story suddenly takes a back seat for a few hours. I mean, the presentation and quality of the stuff I've seen thus far seems to good to be true and I can't imagine that they keep the scenes at that level.

I don't understand why everybody wants 1080p on ps3 for FFXII... if the game was not created with that res in mind wouldn't just be the same stuff but UP-SCALED to 1080p...?

No. The PS3 isn't taking the low res framebuffer and stretching it, it's changing how the game renders the image. You can pop a PS1 game into an emulator and run the game at 1600x1200, and it will look crystal clear. Of course at that resolution the low res textures don't fare well, but it's not simply upscaling the image.
