Nobody is downplaying it, you shouldn't be hyping it. Havoc technology is not a plus as it's something you see in so many next-gen games nowadays. Nothing new.
Ninja gaiden sigma is a remake of a game that's designed for a last-gen console. And there's a lot more interactivity with the environment as you can jump, hang and run against walls.

Could you please describe 'the way' the camera sweeps into the action? Is it doing anything special?

Combat in GOW is much better. Like valchrist said, it definitely doesn't feel as fluid because there's a lack of control. Nariko doesn't respond very well, she seems to be doing her own thing.
Long combo's make you very vulnerable and the auto-targeting sometimes fails after evading. This is not a matter of 'opinions'. It's something Ninja theory should have taken care of.
The superstyle move (O button) is not adding anything to the game, it's just a mini-cutscene which becomes boring when you've seen it 10 times.
Gameplay >>> style
They should have replaced it with a universal block button because switching stances to autoblock doesn't work very well when you're facing multiple enemies. Why? The switching can't keep up with the time frame between their individual attacks and at the same time makes executing combo's confusing.

I think it's very important to talk about the physics. A lot of action games in the future wouldn't even think about this - combining a robust physics engine just makes the characters feel more weighty and the impacts much more realistic. In this respect HS was the first to get here, and is thus ahead of these other games - including the games I mentioned. It doesn't need to be pushed that much, I was just questioned on what I meant, so I had to reinstate it more than once. And the "interactivity" of Ninja Gaiden has nothing to do with this point.

The camera sweeps in when you are fighting, zooms in on counters, and shows you the best view of the environment when needed. It is a true next-gen camera that was ahead of it's time 4 years ago. It's aged very well, and really sets the game off. Giving some very intense moments. Makes you feel like you are playing through a movie.

I quite enjoy the superstyles, plus they get you out of sticky situations with lots of enemies around you, and/or with one very difficult enemy. Plus - IT'S FUN to watch and do.

Nariko is responsive and fluid...to the point that if you know what you are doing, she will do whatever you ask. She will stop mid combo to evade, she will change stances mid combo, and she will change enemies quickly in order to counter etc. Now I have no trouble with this - especially when her combos are so well animated - it is very fluidly done. With GOW you've got moves that are generally all the same, with swords flinging around doing moves that inflict a similar amount of damage. I found GOW combat to be lacking...(and I played it to death) whereas HS has much more depth, and has an amazing amount of variety which is there for you to mix up. Why do a combo, when you can stop mid combo and finish with a different stance?

Lots of games don't have auto-targetting, and I didn't rely on it when I played the game. If it was perfect then somebody who button mashed would be as good as me - but I tell you they are not.

An auto block would make HS very stale. The action would slow down and you would lose a lot of the fun of countering. If you find yourself surrounded by lots of different enemies (my favorite part of the combat), you have lots of options: you counter one incoming - take your pick, others around will be stunned. You do a superstyle. You do an aeriel combos to pick off the weaker ones. If you are hit and fall to the ground, as you are falling, whip up the controller - you will chain them and do a finishing move on them (very satisfying KO). Or you can perform block breaker moves, and power stance combos. This will damage any of the enemies. Finally, you can use the range atack to push everyone away from you....then you can run and target one or two who have been pushed out. Oh, and you can evade.

It seems that people who are struggling, just aren't being creative, or thinking about what to do to overcome the obstacle. I find that when there are lots of different enemies around, I'm having the most fun, because i really have to think up tactics - I mean it's not meant to be a walk in the park.

This was a limited release anyway, not everyone recieved this specific pack.

Case in point: Some, such as destructoid, were given a promo pack that included a Heavenly Sword Letter Slasher...

Depends on how important you are :lol

Am cry!

I get no love from Sony or devs at all. I've been a Playstation Underground member for years & I can't even get into a beta or anything. All I ever got that was bonus was the free t-shirt with the purchase of DMC3.

Just finished off tonight after work, total play time of around 5.5 hours or so ...

and , before i say this, i`ll clarify that i SUCK at action fighting games - but....

This game is absolutely pish easy (in the first run through)

I "died" once on the protect mission because my controller spazzed out. And that`s it.

will jot down some semi-final thoughts on the game.

Your opinion isn't fact. You need to learn the difference.

If you have followed HS development you would know that they wanted to make a game with emphasis on good looking combat. IMO they succeeded. DMC and GoW didn't and they didn't strive for it either. Not as much as HS at least. Of course it could be better but that's why I want HS2. ;)

I thought this comparison was unfair because the games he mentioned are all last-gen. Next-gen games are supposed to look and move better so I don't see havoc physics as a plus.
So basically no "next-gen" games can be compared to old games so far because they have only improved in areas we expected, it would be unfair to old games? I don't agree at all but fine..

I will never understand SCEA's stance on refusing to release a limited edition of any of their games. It's like saying "yes, we hate free money".

Well, i was surprised at just how easy it was. I`m personally stunned by the length - it actually felt much shorter too. :/

When people were saying "6 or so hours - maybe 10-12 for average players" i assumed it would be around 10 hours or so.

But yeah, it`s a prefect rental - clearable in one night easily.

I might give Hell mode a go, but i`ve got a whole stack of games to plough through , so it may have to wait.

Like i said, will finish up some thoughts tomorrow.

now you are overexaggerating...Ive died quite a few times, though Im also quite rubbish at action games...I found resistance no harder than this game, though that game had much greater length

If you only died once it does seem too easy for you though... I agree that NG is much harder, but I find that game a bit irritating really...quite cheap actually, in that it is just geared to being hard, even on normal

I can assure you - i`m as surprised as anyone that i had an easy time on this. I seriously died once - on the bridge, defending... kai level because i failed to pick someone off because the controller spazzed out.

I spent a lot of time dead in Resistance though :D

I utterly suck at NG, and yes - i don`t enjoy it (or DMC3) because i`m too weaksauce to handle either of them.

But yeah, i`m surprised - this isn`t a "ooo look at me i`m great at games!" move I`m trying to pull because frankly in my old age i SUCK at games these days. So I`m surprised anyone would find HS a struggle.

I didn`t find it an overly bad thing, but it could have been a little more balanced to up the tension a little bit.

Also , they threw away a great moment in one of the VERY SHORT levels near the end which was about the most fun 60 seconds in the game.... I wanted that to carry on for a bit more!
It was still great - but oh so sweet and booo ! so short!

I only died a couple of times on certain bosses. That's the norm with games like HS, so I don't mind. Sounds like you really rushed through the game to complete it in 5½ hours. I took my sweet time, taking in the environments when I got the chance. If the game didn't click with you, I can understand why you'd be more inclined to just blaze through it and focus on the combat.

Yep, the game is just too short...five levels, it gives a good introduction, but there should have been five more levels, with a steepening learning curve....it really is a good start, but there is some big changes they could make to the sequel to make the game that much better

not at all - there was no rushing involved at all - i even took a few from screen snaps in that time.

The game did click with me - and i did enjoy it. Looking forward to whatever happens next in the story, but i do have some niggles about the game - the length, the difficulty are two but the combat is the main one, i`m not convinced it`s all -that- to be quite honest and the colour coded attacks made some of the boss fights way too easy (especially the final boss). It`s still fun, but there is a lack of necessity to really mix things up so you are left with needing the user to experiment. Which is fun and all that, but i felt it meant that things were mainly esthetic. Again, that might be resolved by the HELL mode.

Anyways, full write up later today if i get time inbetween work.

hell mode is actually pretty easy too: i doubt anyone will struggle with it after finishing normal mode. but the enemies get more aggressive and hit a good deal harder, which makes hell mode a lot of fun -- you have to be careful about positioning and crowd control, and you get lots of opportunities for stylish counters and smooth attack transitions.

Just finished the game today. The biggest disappointment for me was the lack of "actual" puzzles and platforming. To be honest I thought the game was a little bit too streamlined and just didn't have the epic feel that I think the puzzles and platforming would have given it. But, who am I to complain, even if playing HS wasn't the most fun I've ever had playing a video game, It certainly wasn't ever boring. Especially with the production values, although I thought Nariko's performance was weak at times. The ending was also kind of weak in my opinion.
I'm not too sure about Kai. She turns from this crazy girl to a woman with a wide range of emotions. Did that noose cut off the oxygen from her brain and somehow make her normal?
I'd say rent it.

I just like to say this game can go get f**ked. It was fun until the final boss battle where the game really got me f**king frustrated. The f**king first stage of the boss looked great, but then soon later I was about to smash my PS3 control.

It took me 5+ turns to beat the f**ker. I had a huge feeling of relief after the first battle and after watching that cut-scene I thought to myself, the next fight couldnt be any worse right? wrong!

The second stage of the final boss, where he actully flies and shoots f**king lightning bolts and fire balls. I can't see WTF I am doing most of the time because the c**k sucker's huge wings cover the screen and everytime I get near him, he just flies up and swoops down. I dodge it but c'mon, throw me a f**king bone here.

It's hard enough getting your timing right to deflect the 5 fire balls he shoots at you. He is always dodging and blocking. The power stance with the Heavenly Sword is to f**king slow to hit him, he is always changing his stance so I can rarley counter his moves.

Get f**ked, it's bulls**t. I'm not going to play this game anymore!

He is tough... if you don't know what you're doing. Make sure you time your counters properly and he's easy. I was in a similar but not so angry situation as you when I was on him. After a few goes I managed to crack his code. When I went through again to get all 3 glyphs, I couldn't believe how easy he was.

Bought HS today. Played up to the Flying Fox fight. Some thoughts: the graphis or rather THE GRAPHICS. Everything there is so pretty in HS. Me likes :D The cutscenes are out-of-this-word. I love Bohan and Kai! They're both not right in the head and the way thay act is a sight to behold. I still can't get used to the combat system and I suck at motion control :( Oh well more practice tomorrow.

It's worth repeating again, that the end boss difficulty will drop off sharply after you die a few times on him, in the third tier fight at least.

It's called timing. Stop mashing buttons and pay attention to his attacks. I died ~3 times during this section of the final boss fight until I learned how to avoid 90% of his fireball attacks. The wings aren't a problem if you're paying attention to the attacks he uses.

In general, I stay in the power stance throughout the fight because it blocks a majority of his hits and allows me to evade the red ones if I don't.

Bosses are insanely difficult to counter because you're timing has to be absolutely perfect so I wouldn't even bother trying.

When you're having trouble getting through an enemy's guard, it's a sign that you need to stop mashing and learn some more useful combos 3;

I beat him on my second go, it really isn't that difficult. Just
stay away from him and counter block his fire attacks (the electric blue ones, just hit triangle in normal stance, and the orange ones, hit triangle in power stance). It will send the fireballs right back at him.

End boss in Gears of War was way more frustrating IMO for all the wrong reasons.

I beat Bohan on my first try and thought he was much easier than
second flying fox
and Whiptail. I was actually coming to the conclusion that they purposely made him easier to speed up the ending. The only tip I can think of is to dodge a lot. Dodge, hit, dodge. Then when he shoots the things just counter them back. It's really easy once you get the timing right.

I'm taking my time to get through it. I just beat
roach
. A great character imo. I absolutely love the game. AND the difficulty. I hate NG Sigma because it's just frustratingly difficult. I feel like I have to persevere and it's not enjoyable. The reason I play games is to escape for a while and have a good time. The story, characters, cinematics and gameplay in HS are fucking awesome and I love it.

Only problem is the tearing. I'm not much of a glitch/framerate whore but fuck, there is waaaay too much tearing and it does lessen the experience.

How long do I have to left by the way? If it's over soon then it is way too short.

A few more missions and remove the tearing and this is a 9.5/10. As it stands, I agree with the 8's it received from most reviewers.

If there's one game that needs some extra levels via DLC it's this. Only if it adds to the story though.

My roommate just picked up the game yesterday. It looks pretty cool. I'll be trying it out int he morning. I'm not really into action games, (Didn't care for DMC or NG) but it's free, so I'll give it a shot. Anything in particular I should pay attention to or do while playing, beyond the colors of attacks and the stances to counter them?

Good game, but this is a good demo title IMO. Still haven't finished it but I love the mostly aftertouch levels (bow/cannon). It also seems quite easy as I don't really ever feel that I have to use certain combos/moves to stay alive.

I picked this up recently and really enjoyed it. The cutscenes and presentation is excellent. The levels are beautiful. The combat system is deeper than I expected. I have a blast taking out 10 people in a few seconds using different stances and combos as well as countering attacks and throwing objects at the enemies. I love the way it can all be put together in very stylish, ass kicking package when you really know how to play.

The Bohan fight is just plain boring. It take forever and its pretty much the same three or four attacks from him over and over. It's really a downer of a last fight.

I still can't get used to the combat system and I suck at motion control :( Oh well more practice tomorrow.

Seriously, just go into the options and turn the motion control off. The game works much better without it.

After playing my friend's copy for a couple hours, I really like this game. Solid combat system, nice animations (even though theres quite a few glitches around), meh AI at times and probably the most god awful gameplay moments in an action game when you control Kai.

Fuck you Kai, you ruined this game for me.

If they make a sequel, please, no more Kai crossbow missions. Instead, how about some exploration, adventuring like in God of War.

Yeah did that for Aftertouch . Controlling the camera and tilting the controller upwards to do an air recovery/ juggle an enemy is pretty sweet though. I'm really digging this game. It's presentation is just astounding and the combat is fun too.

Wow, a Kai hater. I was intensely sceptical of her missions at first but ended up loving them.

Thank you. You verbalized every single thought that went through my head as I played Bohan. Wanted to absolutely destroy my controller. Nearly ruined the game for me.

I found him too easy :/ Countering his fire ball attacks was easy -
press triangle when they hit you, not before! And then you use the most powerful power combos (they look great as well!)
I think i died once at each part...and then twice in the last part. That's easy to me... And then it was over :'(

I think this game is fantastic. The cut scenes raise the bar big time. The combat is hugely satisfying and graphically it is awesome. Its only fault is that it's a little on the short side. Edge only gave it 6/10 which i feel is unfair. Huge effort has gone into this game and it deserves better.

I finally had a chance to sit down and play through the game yesterday. I really enjoyed Kai's chapter; it's easily the best part of the game. Stages where you are just blowing shit up are a lot of fun. Great production value; it would have been way better if they could keep the framerate stable. Overall, I had a good time with the game.

To me the worst part of the game would have to be combat AI and the combat itself for Nariko; it's really boring and not fluid, except for little mix ups they throw in during boss fights. The use of sixaxis motion control is also, imo. retarded. Any motion control that could be done by stick control or button press *should* be optional. I'd much prefer being able to play the game while lying down sometimes instead of having to sit up straight all the time.
