Insane For Sony

Any motion control that could be done by stick control or button press *should* be optional. I'd much prefer being able to play the game while lying down sometimes instead of having to sit up straight all the time.
But it is optional. How can you complain for something to be optional when you obviously haven't even checked the options?

I guess I was expecting the game to ask you. Well, that's great.

I have so many questions about what happens in the first game I hope the second is longe and and explains some more things like:
Just how prevelant is magic in that world
Why did nothing happen to Kai when she touched the sword
Whats the relevance of the fox guy killing all but one member of kai's clan
Who is the raven lord/king and why choose bohan as your body
Are there other entities besides the raven with that kind of magic and how many
Why was Kais mother's remains kept in Bohans store room and just hers
Why was the markings on her bandanna similar to that of the sword
Is there a relevance in not burning or burying Nariko's body
Looking forward to see how many of these gets answered in 2 if any.

Just started the game today :D

Quick thoughts :

Environments are fantastic. Wonderful art direction and design.

My thoughts on gameplay haven't changed since the demo. I like it and can't understand why some people say it's a button masher. I have loads of fun with the combos, guard breakers, etc etc.

It's going to be really, really hard to appreciate cut scenes now. HS sets the bar really high.

Bosses are really tough D:

Hmm...rough guesses

Kai didn't use the sword though. I'm sure people had to touch the sword to move it around without getting possessed or w/e. Nariko took it out with the intention of using it, and it must have known.
He says Kai's clan was some big/strong clan, forgot the words, and I'm sure it was just a personal goal to finish them off.
My guess is that the Raven Lord will be the enemy in the sequel as well. This is supposed to be a trilogy right?
The mother's remains were weird. Maybe we find out Kai is actually Bohan's daughter? xD
Didn't notice the markings...good eye
If they burned her, how would she come back in the sequel? :) It's probably their ritual thing. I've seen many movies do the same, although they usually burn the boat while its going.

In the sequel, I want it to start with Heavenly Nariko. It may have been tedious, but I LOVED how it looked when I was range attacking and everyone was just flying off. Bad ass.

Rented the game yesterday, on the last fight with the
Raven King
now after maybe seven or eight hours of play. Definitely have died a few times and am currently "stuck" on the last fight.
Graphics are absolutely awesome, same with the digital acting in the cutscenes. Great characters and a wonderful world I hope to play in again. That is if I can get past the third fight of the last boss! &#@$! Trying a few more times should do the trick, I get really close to beating him, I just wish there was a health orb around.

I showed this game to my non-next gen system owning friend and he actually said "Honestly, I'm kind of jealous. This game looks really fucking good." That kind of came out of nowhere. Thought that was a little funny. :)

Playing on Hell mode and god damn, this is much harder than Normal. I've died tons of times on Hell mode but on Normal, I only died during boss fights.

The one thing that bothers me is that there's no good indication that my health is getting low so every time I die, it seemingly comes out of nowhere, which is kind of frustrating. This is especially so since they are somewhat generous with the health jars.

The animated shorts, specifically the first episode deals with the backstory a little.
It's actually very relevant to the end of the game
I reckon you're right about him though. I thought it was a nice twist and look forward to delving into the story more in the sequel.

Well the animated series from what I remember only talked about Bohan
and leaves out the Raven King. It's like the Raven seeks out those people who are evil and takes over or someting
. I need to watch the animes again..

Watch the first one at least.
It's all about the Raven Lord. The last battle of the game is basically a rematch of the fight in that episode.

So i went back to watch the animes (3 in particular where it talks about shen and bohan) and PSBlog took only 3 down. weird. anyways, theres a raven in almost every anime shown very prominently...i hope they explain the origins of it and such.

edit: hmm your right
now i just wonder if that was the original raven lord, and he became a raven after that battle, or if he was just another pawn as bohan was. and also, nariko says the heavenly sword isnt heavenly, and shes not some chosen one...but shes wrong right? i wasn't sure at that point..

Definitely a lot of unanswered questions;
My guess is that the Raven Lord will turn out to be a Sauron-esque figure and will eventually assume a physical form, Nariko will come back to life midway through the second game bathed in the white light independent of the Heavenly Sword and the origin of the Sword and it's power will be revealed to be entirely sinister. Perhaps forged by the Raven Lord himself?

I just finished the game recently and must say I am very impressed. Such a beautiful game. I struggled with the six-axis motion controls, but it was fun after getting used to it. I thought the length of the game was perfect. I really hope there is a sequel to continue the story.

Rewatching the cut scenes. This has to be the most edgy Teen rated game ever? There's no 'f**k' or gore but the game can have a very harsh tone. People are really spitefull of others and there's just so much more power behind their words and the game is really suggestive overall. It's awesome but I'm not sure if this should have been a Teen rating as it's more powerfull then 95% of the M rated games out there.
Bohan sitting over a dying Whiptail, he's seemingly all pleased and non concerned over her dying. She's all scared and telling how she can't feel her legs. Then he feels them up for her before he actually breaks her neck and retracts the sword out of her chest.

I feel exactly the same way. Earlier today while playing Halo 3, I thought, how the hell did this game manage to get an M while Heavenly Sword squeezed out a T. I guess guns > swords to the ESRB.

Kai
blackmailed the ESRB by threatening to attack their weakpoints for MASSIVE damage if they gave the game an M rating

Speaking of that, there's several golden moments with Kai that's missing from the cutscene library. The one mentioned above, the false password..etc.

Okay, since it's not in the cutscene library in the game, here's the cutscenes involving Kai needing to attain the password for the armory. Sorry about the handcam/sound:

Part 2 - Fireworks

Part 4 - Correct Password

Kai's chapter is probably the funniest and most emotional segment in the game.

So I finally got to play a couple of hours of this, and it's so fucking amazing that I would buy it if it were an hour long. It's the first next-gen (this gen, whatever) game that truly made me gawk at the visuals and the amount of things going on at once. I'll be picking it up when I get money. Damn.

I'm still waiting for the LAIR summary, tanod.

Let's see if I can remember.

You have 5 primary players in the game:
-The diviner who is the religous leader in Asylia.
-The council who governs Asylia.
-Rohn who is part of the SkyGuard of Asylia.
-Rohn's friend, Loden, who is also part of the sky guard.
-Kobra Commander (actual name is Koba Kai but just to make it more fun for me to type out this drek, I'm taking narrative liberty) is the leader of the tribal people, the *sounds like Orokai (like LOTR)*

A thousand or so years ago, this volcano bubbles up in the middle of this country and it splits the country in two, creating two unique cultures. One that focuses on technology and artistry and lives in cities (Asylia), and one that is more tribal and lives in the mountains. Asylia has most of the arable land.

Despite their cultural differences/focuses, their level of technology is pretty similar and the Asylians are surprised by this fact early in the game.

At the beginning of the game, the Orokai attack Asylia. The likely reason is to obtain food for their people. The Asylians fight them off and counterattack.

The Diviner believes that the Orokai are the ones who brought the "curse" of the volcano to the land. He wants to destroy them to fix it.

The council resolves to make peace with the Orokai and they set up a meeting at this big bridge that connects the two countries. Rohn and Loden are there along with the head of the council and Kobra Commander's dad.

Before they sign the treaty, Loden kills both Kobra Commander's dad (the leader), the council member, the Skyguard captain, knocks out Rohn out and runs away back to Asylia.

You later learn that Loden did so on the orders of the Diviner, who he is a follower of.

The rest of the Asylians (not knowing the real truth of what has happened), make Loden the new Skyguard captain and through unknown methods, the rest of the council gets killed as well.

The diviner takes over Asylia and mounts an offensive against the capital city of the other side. Rohn obediently but slightly grudgingly follows orders from Loden.

Kobra Commander and his dragon is captured by Asylia around this time. Rohn sets dragon free against orders.

After they win the battle at the capital city and the Orokai city is all but razed to the ground, there are people on the ground running into a building that is supposedly an armory.

Loden orders Rohn to destroy it and he does.

Rohn enters the building afterwards and finds that it was actually a church. He walks up to one of the charred corpses and takes blanket/shawl off of it and finds a dead woman's skeleton holding a baby's skeleton. :'(

Rohn gets pissed. Loden "kills" Rohn and his dragon (who was trying to defend him) when he gets confronted by Rohn.

Rohn doesn't actually die. Gets up and starts to fly his wounded dragon to find survivors of the Orokai. Before they find anybody, dragon dies. :'(

Somehow, Kobra Commander's dragon finds Rohn and takes him to the survivors.

Rohn joins other side. They regroup and counter attack the Asylians.

First they need to rescue Kobra Commander from this prison in an area known as the Maelstrom. Coolest looking environment in the game. :D

Rescue goes fine and they attack the capital city, and take out Loden and the Diviner.

The volcano erupts and your dragon has to bomb the volcano vents shut otherwise the Asylia capital city will be toast. You do so and the game ends.

Happy bunnies, flowers and well wishes abound. We can live in peace with the Kobra Commander and his people. Rohn becomes King or something.

Everybody lives happily after, unless you're the person who played the game who wants to rip the disc out of your system to run it over with your car and gouge your eyes out for making yourself play through a terrible mess of a game.

The end.

I think I got the important stuff in there. See my criticisms in the Lair thread for why this game is so terrible and cumbersome to play.

I'm glad I only rented it. Thanks reviewers!!

Just picked the game up over the weekend. So far I am very impressed. Only up to the third chapter, but the fighting is really exciting and fun.

Surprisingly, the shooting segments are my favorite bits in the game so far. That bit where you
have to protect Shen was so epic and awesome. An escort mission that's actually fun? Impossible!!

HA....and what? No folklore love?

I don't usually post in hype and screenshot threads until they get a lot closer to release. R&C is an exception because Insomniac has grown to be one of my favorite devs in the last year.

I'm sort of tapped out on new games since I just picked up Gears, BioShock and Heavenly Sword. I have plenty to play right now.

Well I can only assume you'll be doing the R&C Official right? I sure as hell don't want to lol

There already is an official thread. I don't remember who has it now but I do hope they maintain it as reviews come in.

I just finished the game and... wow. Short but loved every second.

For those complaining about the final boss... it is all about timing with the fireballs. It took me a while to figure it out.

I finished this yesterday and I did enjoy it. However, if the game was as polished during gameplay as it is during cut scenes then it would be much much better! I am not talking about visually looking exactly the same between cut scenes and gameplay, but just overall polish. First off, I was a bit bothered by the unstable framerate in this game and I am in no ways a framerate whore (did not bother me for SOTC). I don't know why but I really disliked the skippy (yeah, skippy) feeling I get when I am fighting or even just walking around in this game, perhaps because her motions are supposed to be very graceful and this being an action game and all.
Anyway, if the framerate is patchable, I hope Ninja Theory does so. :)

PS: I am a bit compelled in completing the game again in Hell Mode since it is so short. :lol

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised

the frame rate seemed to be intermittent for me - it didn`t ruin the action for me, but it was there.

If it wasn`t there it would have made the game even more visually stunning but it wasn`t a deal breaker , i found that the vsync issues/framerate judders seemed to happen at really odd places.

Taking Kai up in one of the lifts at the start of the
Nariko rescue mission
my Ps3 nearly had a fit! Yet there was little going on - other than that , yeah, minor but i think the reason it sticks out a little more than usual is because the rest of the game looks so amazingly good.

hahaha - i had EXACTLY the same thought in the
afterlife hub, where Nariko is talking to the sword

"Damn, this engine in an RPG with lesser AI, lesser physics etc to worry about and people are going to go crazy!"

they could even keep the same art style... as it is a nice amalgamation of east and western designs... damn its never going to happen...but scee should really try to share this engine with some of its other developers...one way to recoup the massive budget of this game.

Can someone please alleviate my fears about SPOILER
Nariko dying? She stold Kai to take care of the sword for her...maybe she'll come back some how..? :( WHY! would they do this? I just can't believe she's dead. Yeah it's really because she's modeled really well :p but I grew found of the character and she's the only one that stuck out from all the rest. Did Sony say no to sequels and they just ended it or something? Is there maybe some hints in the game that the heavenly sword may have some special properties if someone has a good heart...? :( I'm just so SAD because they gave her a water funeral which means she's gone! WHY!

If you think about it a little more:

Nariko dies in Chapter 6 before she fights Bohan. For all we know, she is still in purgatory with, what I'm guessing is, the "soul" of the Heavenly Sword. We're just not privy to that information.
I'm pretty sure that Ninja Theory said they have sequels in mind and I'm thinking it will sell well enough.

finally got this damn thing yesterday! (gooo media mail!)

....haven't even gotten the sword yet...just looking forward to the cinematic love in this one before I get Orange Box next week

Normal beaten twice with everything unlocked (129/129) and running through Hell mode. The game really started to shine for me when I unlocked all the moves for the HS. They're so kickass to watch and are good at crowd control. Me likes.

ICE isn't an engine but various bits of tech from SCEA. We used some (largely indirectly tbh as some SCEE ATG libraries use them but still its in there) so fairs fair with the credit.
