Hehe...I was trying to get people following the score from this thread a little nervous. ;)

Canada wins. I never doubted. :)

I am CRUSHED by the outcome of the US/Czech game. You know I hate a team when they beat the friggin' US and I'm disappointed. ;)

Go Suomi! Defeat Russia for great justice!

Damn, Sweden tied the Swiss. I'd cheer for the Swiss to win except for one thing... ZAUG! He would be unstoppable if the Swiss got to the semis. :lol

Forty-five seconds into the game, Ziggy Palffy unleashed Marian Gaborik with a great pass, and Gaborik broke into the Canadian zone past Ed Jovanovski. Jovanovski lunged at Gaborik's feet causing the young Slovak star to fall. But Gaborik got up in stride, regained his composure, and deked to beat Martin Brodeur high on the stickside.
Jovo staggering around on D like a crippled gazelle? No way! Every game I've watched this tourney has shown Jovocop stumbling around his end like Manny Ramirez drunkenly tripping around left field. I need to find Habschied's email address from Hockey Canada to start a "Bench Jovanovski Now" campaign. Although 2 of the games I've watched had the one Canadian Dman I had no worries about - Wade Redden - shocking me with the occasional bad play too.

EDIT: updated scores from the official site
Finland 3 Russia 3 <- Datsyuk tied it in the second
Sweden 2 Switzerland 1 <- Daniel Sedin with the go ahead goal, also in the second

NOOOO! Damn shootouts suck. :(

I love the betandwin odds they have in the official site's ad banner
London Knights at Ottawa 67´s
1 1.43
No goal 51.00
2 2.50

Considering it's the playoffs I don't think 51 is enough payout for picking "No goal". ;) Unless those crazy Euro's have some wacky notion of no goal beyond the obvious.

tonight we got my home country "sweden" agianst chech-republic

and guess who is comming out of that match as a winner....SWEDEN!!!!

Pitiful display by the Russians so far. I had $10 on them winning this game too. I figured that Canada would probably come out on top but took a risk anyways. One of my co-workers must be laughing right now.

All hope is not lost yet, Canada is in deep trouble, Russia has dominated the 2nd period, they just made it 4-1. =)

edit: 4-2!!! 39:18...

Come oooooon Russia. One more. Make it two for safety's sake. I want $10!
Bah. 4-3 Canada. Ah well. I want to see someone new win this tournament. Preferebly the Czechs. We'll see.
You're dead to me now. :|

Great first period, even though I napped through most of it. Nice to see the defence scoring a few goals. I slept through most of the comeback but the third was pretty exciting, I'm rewatching the game now on tape. I need a TIVO for this shit.

As far as Czech/Sweden, I can never ever cheer for the Czechs but I'm sick of seeing Sweden in the finals too. I don't often say this, but I wish the US was there. ;P

Ahh, some really good news.
Canada gets 2009, 2012 World Juniors

Canadian Press

VIENNA (CP) - The world junior hockey championship will be played in Canada every three years in an unprecedented deal announced by the International Ice Hockey Federation on Saturday.

Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson officially approached the IIHF congress with the proposal this week and the deal was approved Saturday, albeit with some trepidation from some European federations who realize Canada will get home-ice advantage every three years.

"It's something I've been working on with (IIHF president) Rene Fasel for a couple of years and also through other federations," Nicholson said Saturday. "We've shown that we can sell the event. I was able to announce to the congress today that Vancouver is already all sold out."

The Dec. 26-Jan. 5 tournament is set for Vancouver, but Canada now also has rights to the 2009 and 2012 tournaments. The under-20 deal with Hockey Canada will then be re-evaluated after the 2012 tournament.

"The under-20 tournament always has great success in Canada," Fasel said Saturday. "Look at the passion in Halifax, where there 226,000 fans. And all the games are already all sold out in Vancouver."

The IIHF makes more money when the event is staged in Canada, where attendance records continue to be shattered with every event. In Europe, the world junior tournament is treated like a minor-league event.
It's the men's IIHF world championship that gets Stanley Cup attention in Europe.

Fasel admitted handing over the under-20 tournament to Canada every three years wasn't as an easy sell to the rest of the federations, however.

"If I said yes, I would be lying," Fasel said. "Every federation is fighting for its interest. But at the end of the day everyone is also fighting for the game and everyone accepted the decision."

Nicholson said he appeased the European federations by promising to cover some training camp costs in Canada as well as some travel costs.

"I was really thrilled with the decision," Nicholson said. "You have a lot of countries who were looking at this. But what matters is that our fans are the winners here.

"They made this happen because of how they support the event and how they also buy tickets for non-Canadian games."

Nicholson said one Canadian host bidding process would be held for both the 2009 and 2012 tournaments.

"And we're going to move as quickly as we can on that," Nicholson said.

It appears one of those tournaments will likely be held in Ontario given that the province hasn't held the event since 1986 in Hamilton. Saskatoon hosted in 1991, Red Deer in '95, Winnipeg in '99 and Halifax in 2003. Montreal hosted the tournament in 1978.
Winnipeg needs another tourney! :D

Sorry Calder. My bitterness is mostly due to overconfident co-workers who think that every single tournament is a walk in the park for Canada. They're just really blinded by their own nationalism. :-\ I'm a supporter of our boys but I do think we need to be humbled from time to time.

I'm not at home. Is there a site out there that has a game ticker of the Czech/Sweden game? Can't seem to find one and am curious to see who scored for the Czechs.

I was scared of the Czechs for 2 reasons going in - they play the trap better than anyone ever has and Vokoun is easily the best goalie in the tournament (ignoring Brodeur's rep).

Having watched most of the third period, it didn't look like a Canadian team that deserved to win. At times it looked like some sloppy ball hockey team out there...
