Official info for God of War Ragnarok's graphics modes on PS5 & PS4

What pisses me off is that they never tell what settings are reduced between Performance and Quality modes. I don't know why. Maybe u guys can enlighten me.

A proper thread. So I will repeat here.
Seems redundant to have so much choice so close together in visuals.
I will go for fidelity 40 vrr if it's stable. Otherwise vrr will cause flicker.

And why is 60 performance no hfr unlocked?!

I don't like if the choices feel like selecting a feature I want to sacrifice. You could see this sharp graphics but this low res mode is 60 fps. So it's choosing between sacrifices. Consoles never felt like that.
But here modes seem so very close :p
I sit close to oled so native 4k is nice

I'm all for choices but damn, that's a lot of options on the PS5.
it might look at this, but for the user it is most likely only "performance" or "quality"
The other options like HFR (120hz) or VRR are probably enabled by default if supported and most users wont bother: If the TV supports it why should they disable it?

For the DF guys it is probably horror because they probably will test and pixel count each and every mode.

If you cant notice them yourself then it doesnt matter what settings are reduced between Performance and Quality.
If they told us, you would then start looking out for those discrepancies.
If you cant tell then the modes have done their job.
Hell id argue even telling people the resolution your game is running at is basically pointless.

As long as it looks as good, or better than GOW2018, then happy days for me. Looking forward to seeing how it reviews later today.

Favor performance always for action games.

In a way, I wish it was dynamic. Like I'm never going to appreciate the graphics in full during fights so a locked 30 with all the bells and whistles that suddenly unlocks when you're fighting would've been great.

But till then, I'm taking a performance option all the way.

Jesus Christ. I remember when you used to just slap a console game on and play it. Now we've got all this bullshit to choose from. I guess I'll go with quality with VRR as I've got a CX?

I mean you still can. If you don't want to mess with it you can literally just press new game and never mess with the options.

OMFG....that's to much brain activity for you? How the hell you can chose from 6 options....

No VRR or 120hz here, so the regular performance mode for me.

PS4 Pro is weird. Your options are "unlocked 30" (which I suppose means it will go above 30 but rarely if ever hit 60) and "target 30" (will not always hit 30?), so there's no mode that just locks to 30? That's gonna suck, games running at 45fps or whatever don't feel very smooth on a 60hz display.

Resolution mode 1800p-2160p unlocked 40fps (120 Hz w/ VRR)

I'll be using this mode, found it extremely smooth in Uncharted legacy of thieves.
Word. 40fps (even without unlocked+VRR) is quite the sweet spot for me, a nice compromise between the bling and fluidity.

(if implemented correctly - looking at you Plague Tale Requiem)

Very likely going to check them all out and then settle for 40fps Quality with VRR. Reason being because Uncharted Legacy of Thieves runs beautifully like that and looks amazing.

what is the difference between 'target 60fps and 'unlocked 60fps'

If I go for performance with HFR and VRR (unlocked 60fps) will it not be consistent 60fps or will it?

yeah the modes are confusing.
As aways the descriptions are terrible and we must wait for DF review.
I am kinda tired with this crap. Focus on less modes!
40hz mode is self explanatory but it also says 40hz target, unlock and vrr :P

I have a PS5 for exclusives but I've been neglecting them because I'm tired of having to choose between resolution and "performance," if you want to call 60 FPS that.

This is one of the worst trends. Set a standard of 4K/60 minimum and develop games accordingly. Imagine being greeted with this screen if you don't know what any of it means.
4k native is wasteful, there is a lot to be gained by dropping the resolution and reconstructing the image, they just give you the option since it is not a lot of work to implement, the target is 60fps, you can blame this on us. We are the ones who commemorate for 10% better native resolution wins com comparisons. That put an enormous pressure on developers to achieve native resolution, even if it is at 30fps. The average game in this gen is very clean and smooth, most people can tell if is native ress or not. It's funny how things go. We don't mind listening to MP3 even with the loss in fidelity, or watching a movie on netflix even if it was much lower bitrate than a BLURAY. Why? Because it's too damm difficult to notice. Game resolution is the same thing most of the time, Yes, I can see the difference in Forbidden West going from native to performance. But when I'm playing? The game looks pretty much flawless and so much fluid.

The option is the best thing that happened to console gaming in my opinion, most games doesn't ask anything from the player, the option is buried in the settings menu, every game have a default state, and even when its not, give some credit to gamers, that is not some alien concept that people have difficult to grasp, It's pretty straight forward process that you do once and forget about it.

It's really just the usual two modes (favor fidelity / favor performance), the rest depends on if you have a 120hz display, and if it supports HDMI 2.1 VRR

I'll likely go performance, but will try out the 40hz VRR

60 fps for me, as always. I'll switch over to quality mode for a bit just to remind myself that I can't see what I'm missing there except for less frames.

Quality 40FPS VRR should go from 40 to 60FPS, depending on the scenes.

After spending hundreds of hours playing games in my Steam Deck, I find that 40FPS is pretty adequate for 3rd person adventure games. I don't see why I should sacrifice image quality to go above 40 FPS, especially considering the game will probably play above that most of the time.

PS5

Quality
2160p 30 Hz
1800p-2160p 40 Hz (120 Hz output)
1800p-2160p unlocked (120 Hz w/ VRR)

Performance
1440p-2160p 60 Hz
1440p unlocked (120 Hz)
1440p unlocked (120 Hz w/ VRR)

PS4 Pro
1440p-1656p 30 Hz
1080p-1656p unlocked

PS4
1080p 30 Hz

I sometimes hate what consoles have become and on top of that difference in effective quality based on the console itself.

Who wants less choice? Lol wtf man. You don't speak for everyone. If you don't want choice, stay out of the settings. People like me with a LG OLED don't want peasant 30 or 60. Give me unlocked VRR goodness!

yeah... and sadly I have a feeling this will lead to pcification and yearly console releases like smartphones in the future.
And it will suck ass

Right? Like shit- don't have more than one shirt or restaurant nearby. Locking up a homie's brain with too much choice.
