Official LAIR thread

*OPINION ALERT* i think achievements are the absolute stupidest thing ever, i will think they are stupid when the ps3 has their own version, and/or the Wii too. I dont care which company uses them, or if they all use them, i think its stupid. Achievements adding replay value? Thats even worse, and for shame on reviewers for using that.

But apparently i am completely in the minority here.

yeah, they hold zero interest to me as well..but fair enough if others like them

You have a very different opinion to me... but then I've always loved any game that tells me I've seen pretty much all there is to see - be it via achievements or a percentage collected / completed indicator.

I understand that there are people who play a game specifically for achievements though... which is pointless.

Well if achievements unlock stuff (see : RFoM) then I think it's pretty cool. If it's just for the purpose of e-penis contests, I don't see the point.

Didn't they say that achievments would unlock stuff within home ? like furnitures or clothes ?

I don't know how you can deny it adds replayability.

Oblivion for example, I was pretty much done with the game, until I scrolled through the achievements and say the one for the "Dark Brotherhood". That sounded pretty damn cool so I set off to do it.

I wasn't doing them for the points (who the F cares about some stupid gamerscore really?) but it was a nice way to indicate some thigns in the game I might have missed and want to check out.

At the very least, it gives you random challenges that you can try, and that alone extends rplay value. See Crackdown for example.

Another great example is the pacifist achievement in Gemoetry Wars: Stay Alive for 60 seconds Without Shooting Anything.

Now that's just a really cool, addicting challenge that you can spend hours trying to complete, and achievements is a fairly good system of allowing developers to put those challenges in.

I liked it back in the day when instead of an indicator on screen, the game actually unlocked content for the player to enjoy when you did something great in game.

Now developers don't have to include that content, because they can dole out meaningless points and feel good about themselves.

Oh and then they can charge for that extra content instead.

You mean like the Darkness...oh wait....

Well I said some. I remember Edge, and a fellow poster here mentioned the UK PlayStation magazine

I tend to agree with gamerankings/metacritics final average. If Lair ends up with a 8+ average I will definitely get it.

Lair looks absolutely incredible, and probably the best looking title this year on ANY system from a technical standpoint.

I'm still very much concerned about the gameplay, but they are pushing the hardware here. The scale of the levels is reminiscent to PS1 CGI in games like FF8 or FF9 when they're zooming out and looking at some huge city.

I really, really hope FF13 can match the scale of Lair in terms of its city designs.

This is what Cell is a beast at: progressive mesh.

well, when i think of achievements i dont think of it unlocking anything, i think of stupid shit like "you watched the movie for 35 minutes, congratulations"

If you do this and you get a new costume, or you get a hidden ending or something, thats different. Even the "Dark Brotherhood" in oblivion is different to an extent. I was thinking of the "you have spent 4 days of your life that you will never see again playing this game, you have earned 75 points" That to me is pointless... dont get me wrong, if it actually unlocks something in the game, i like it.

And mini games like Geometry Wars, or even if SSHD had something like stay alive for 45 seconds without shooting, thats different, those are quick hit games that are meant to be played like that, and the "accomplishment" is actually part of the game, not something to just earn points on the side

Well that's pretty narrow, you need to weight it based on your preferences. Lots of 8+ games are crap, while many under 8 I think are great. Doom III and Lost Planet got 8ish scores and I though were garbage, while games like Disaster Report and Dark Messiah were good fun.

The game looks awesome, the player doesn't know how to lock on or do a 180 even though the game is flashing the damn instruction.

They also kept trying to use the analog stick for the first few moments...doesn't EVERYONE know by now they the game uses the Sixaxis?!?

Even if this game controls do suck, you would have to be blind to argue against this game's beauty.

if it doesn't win best graphic, I dont know what's gonna happen

what happens in the clip !?

i cant view it because stupid work blocked the site..

edit: Nvm i haxed my works computer and now it works.

Double Edit: I said HOLY FUCKING SHIT FUCK!

Eventhough the game seems to be a let-down so far, I think I will probably buy this game for the graphics alone. Not on release though, would rather have Warhawk and Heavenly Sword, maybe during early next year while I wait for MGS4 and Killzone 2.

so I don't wanna start a console war, but do you think this will be the game to compare to now? Everyone always uses gears, and (once again no console war) personally I think this DESTROYS gears, or anything around it. Just my opinion though.

Who ever compares Gears to this is either

1- losing there eye site
2- Blind
3- Fanboy
4- likes inferior graphics
5- idiot

Gears looks great but Lair is hands down the future benchmark that others will try to compete with untill Killzone 2 comes out .

the scale in LAIR is unrivaled

graphically the game looks great...its at least something that should be praised in reviews...thats probably the most impressive city Ive seen in a game in terms of scale

Lair will never get the respect it deserves from a technical standpoint due to the artstyle.

It is very uninteresting, except for the technical work.

God knows when there are videos of good players on the internets actually excelling at the game, that it will look much much cooler.

I'm with you here. The only "achievement" I'm interested in is "Gratz, you finished the game, now go on GAF and tell everyone!". Maybe an automatic script, that posts in the official thread "neorej just finished this game".

Even unlockables hold little interest to me, I pay for the game, I want to be able to enjoy it from the very first minute, I don't want to run through it twice just to get the maximum experience.

But Achievements are completely optional. If you don't like them, you don't have to go after them, no-one is forcing you, so you might as well put them in for the people that do like them.

Blimblim with the lack of bias. :lol
The video didn't show *anything* new and no interesting gameplay either. That's a totally uninteresting video, it has nothing to do with the game itself.

and how do you honestly feel about the title thus far?

(sorry if its a question thats already been asked)

Not so much uninteresting as it is infuriating to watch the player fiddle with the controls so incessantly.

The bad thing about nearly all Lair's videos we have seen so far is that they just don't show the game. The player doesn't know how to play, he just practices with the controls flying around the environment shooting fireballs, which is kinda boring to look at.

Pretty much.

THe best Lair vids I've seen were the ones from gametrailers a while ago, the dev walkthrough in 3 parts.

The videos for Heavenly Sword were similarly awful in the "skills of the person playing" department.

as are the majority of the vids released for Stranglehold and DMC4....especially the latter (>__<)

I agree.. LAIR will never get the respect it deserves.

kind of like Genji 2.. in my opinion Genji 2 looks better than GeOW .. but no one cares though and Gears still became the benchmark for graphics.

Even Unreal 3 wont get its due...

I haven't played the game since TGS last year, so I can't judge the gameplay. I don't like the game's artistic direction (sorry Che), but it's definitely very impressive technically.
