Official LAIR thread

kobun, im curious if you reviewed the same version of Lair that's making its way into stores now?

I wonder if sony delayed the release date, to remove mandatory motion controls if thats possible

Hey Kobun, what about that "rage vision" that highlights your targets in Red or something...?

It's possible that they'll add an option to use Left Analog in a patch, but I doubt it.

What they really need is a button that focuses the camera on your next goal. Then you could hold/toggle that button, find what you need to kill, and then go kill it.

There is targeting in the game, in addition to the dragon vision you mentioned.

Alright, so let's say you manage to learn the controls and have no problems spotting targets...could the game potentially be worthwhile?

I'm leaning towards "no", as it sounds pretty poor across the board, but it is something I'm curious about. The controls would probably kill it for me as well as I'm not too terribly fond of motion controls in most games (though Prime 3 is one exception, despite all the hassles).

I mean something like in Gears of War, or even Sky Gunner, where the camera will focus on your objective, and you can detach it when you get close.

There's lock-on, there's rage-vision, but nothing quite works.

Sorry to ask so many questions, but how does rage-vision work? Does it highlight your objectives for you?

Exactly what I'm getting at. Skygunner was SUPER hard at first, but then things clicked after I managed the controls.

Screw review scores, I want to ride a dragon! If Gamefly is nice to me (and they usually are) I should be playing my frist PS3 game early next week. Well, technically my second. But I can only brag about my Super Rub a Dub impulse buy for so long before people think I'm quacking up.

I am really good at video games and I got to almost the end of the game without ever feeling fully comfortable with the controls or spotting the targets. It's not a question of "are you man enough to fight with me," it's just not fun.

What did you think of their previous games, by the way?

Some of those problems seem rather familiar, if you ask me (another knock against it).

Gamestop's office just called to tell me it's available RIGHT NOW...but don't be fooled.

I called the actual store and they said tomorrow.

Don't listen to the call...save yourself the drive!

I got the call just now that it was in, has anyone picked it up yet?

No its actually available now - they also dispatched emails to the store managers.

It seems really stupid of Factor 5 to force motion controls when every other PS3 game adds it as an option (Warhawk/Motorstorm/F1/HS) to appease Wii fans and normal game fans alike.

If Lair had a normal control option I'd give it a shot, but not touching it the way it is. I'm pretty much boycotting any game where the majority of the game is played with motion controls.

It ensures that I'll never be able to play it for long stretches if I end up getting it. With normal controls, I can slouch back in the couch. With motion controls, I have to sit up straight and really focus on what I'm doing and I can never relax my arms.

Well, the Wii is doomed then. :lol

When I play Warhawk with Motion, I feel the same way though... good point.

Don't get me started. ;)

I should say that I have nothing against motion controls per se, but I prefer for them to be regulated to small downloadable games.

I can't tell what frame rate is caused by the stream and what from the game

obviously stream is choppy.... you wouldnt notice any framerate issues over stream like that... but he likes the controls... interesting....

i just got done doing some training and the first mission. sorry is my typing is a little off, but my keyboard is busted.

voice acting so-so

gameplay i kind of like the tilt controls and will get better over time..hopefully.

framerate i haven't seen it drop once.

not sure what else you want to know, but feel free to ask.

From another forum:

Ok, so I pop in the disc and first thing I notice is that it doesn't play music on the XMB. Not a big deal, but for a game that should have great music, it would be nice to experience it in XMB.

Prologue: there's a little story that I couldn't hear because my wife was talking too much. I'll have to go back and listen to it.

Training: basics. no firing at anything, no charging. just flight training. ends with a "fly through the hoops" deal.

short 1st level: I guess there's no real training like a trial by fire...(i kill me sometimes...). Straight from the videos, you get on your dragon and attack some ships. Then some Ice Dragons come around and you have to charge at them. I'm not used to the controls yet, but it's a little confusing at times. After you dispatch of the ice dragons, you go after a general. After a few rounds of ramming into him, you both separate and the mission is complete.

Graphics: Awesome. Stunning. Everything you wish it would be. Although, there were a few stutters, it doesn't take away from the game play.

Music: great when you can listen to it. I'm too wrapped up into learning how to fly the dragon that I'm not paying attention to it. There's so much going on around that you fail to notice it. It really fits the mood though.

Note: so far there are too many cut-scenes without warning. usually games fade out and then go into a cut-scene. Here, it's from one motion to the next. kind of cool - kind of annoying.

Overall after 1 level...8/10. points deducted for the stuttering, short tutorial, and over use of cut scenes.

Level 2: now it gets disappointing...I land with the dragon and start annihilating ground soldiers. Pretty cool....EXCEPT THEY'RE JUST F'ING STANDING THERE!!! I would've hoped they'd run or attack or something. NOPE! After they're gone, I have to protect a grain caravan from a general dragon as well as some ice dragons. Again, not used to the controls, I can't really manage my way around to kill off the dragons; let alone find them.

:O

WTH I'm in PS3 game overload for the first time.

Alright, just got done with a few levels. I'm not sure what to think yet. The controls are easy as hell to pick up, and anyone who complains about them is most likely trying to play the game with their feet. Graphics are.... underwhelming? some landscapes are rather stunning, but I really don't "feel" the water, it just looks a little out of place. Here is my biggest gripe: R1. If you don't know what you need to kill, just press R1 and smash [], it'll pretty much guarantee you a kill. I've gotten into one dragon-dragon claw battle, and it wasn't too bad, but was over rather soon after using the combo I unlocked with the first level, haha.

However, despite all these complaints, I do enjoy the game. The dragon controls like a dream(the 180 turn around can take a few tries to figure out how to do), and the music is IN-FUCKING-CREDIBLE. I would honestly play the game just to listen to the music. And most importantly, at least for me, is that flying around during the massive war is enjoyable. The framerate stuttered once in the first level, but it wasn't too bad and didn;t detract from my enjoyment. So far... I guess a 7/10 sounds about right. I haven't been involved in anything too epic or 'WOW' but what I have played is nice.

Oh yeah, not sure if I mentioned it yet, but the controls are fine, you honestly don't notice it or fight with it.
