Official LAIR thread

Looking at this video, I'm surprised that it got such a low score from so many places. It looks very similar to the Star Wars themed games, but with more close combat and crazy dragon themes.

It makes me think that the reviewers got a bad build or something.

Fuck it, I'll pick it up on the way home :lol

from the reviews, it seems as if it will destroy your PS3 :-)

Second that.

Ok, called Metreon, but they say that they can't sell it until next week.

Anyone else know a NorCal store where I can pick it up?
Best Buy perhaps?

Triz: Where did you pick it up?

onto the Lair impressions - I have played up thru chapter 4.

The good

+ First chapter is a tutorial that teaches you how to fly and gets you comfortable with it flying thru rings. The tutorial also isnt so long that you want to get the fukk out of there - its perfect...

+ The GFX are in true 1080P and IMO its the best looking thing I have seen this gen. I didnt expect it to be this good, and it looked horrible in the new videos on the Warhawk disk compared to how it looks on my TV in motion. I havent sat there and disctected still screens or anything, but everything looks great, the lighting looks real, and I can count nicely bumpmapped bricks on the wall of a tower like 1 mile away and it all looks so real i could just reach in my TV and touch it. Nothing else on any system this gen comes close to the overall visual impact of this game in moton.

+ Contrary to what I read, its not hard to use the dragon view to see your targets outlined in red...as far as it being hard to see in the 2nd chapter - why dont you try wearing an armored helmet, and riding on the bare back of a dragon flying into the sun with no extra hand to shield your eyes from the sun...its all so real i tried squinting to I could see better...instead of doing that just push down on the control pad to see theu the dragon eyes and hit your targets....

+ The game basically at the end of the day is nothing new - it plays just like rogue Squadron so far. Same exact mission format - quick in game cutscenes showing you a taregt, or enemies approaching and a leader telling you what to engage...having said that, I like that style of game and havent played one of these factor 5 shooters since the N64 days.

+ What is new is doing what I always wanted for the Wii - the tilt controls used in a fun way to control a decent true next gen game...thats exactly what LAIR is so far...it delivers the fun the Wii never gave me, and the best visuals seen to date. The game already gets its place in my perminant library on that accolade alone.

Here comes that bad;

- Game needed just a BIT more polish, but its still well done. There is some odd clipping at times when running on the ground. Really its the same kind of stuff I saw in all of Factor 5s other offerings for N64 and GCN. They have that odd game engine that runs like a RTS engine with flying....the game more than makes up for it by being georgous.

- The missions feel short for my tastes...I hope it picks up the length and spans many many chapters...right now it feels like the missions are over just when they get good.

- The game is nothing like Drakengard...while the game rates you on tons of enemy carnage, it wont let you grind, farm or go on kiling sprees outside of the mission scope. Its like ill be done with a mision in the sky, see like 1,000 guys still on the ground and totally want to land and demolish them on dragon back...and ill land, and get to killin when the game abruptly pulls me out of the fun and drops me into the end mission cut-scene and then onto the next intermission/mission

So yeah - tilt controls put to good use (game wouldnt be nearly as good with stick movement)....something new to learn and while its simple and straight forward, gets harder as you manage all of the buttons and find yourself reaction jerking to avoid enemies/shots as if they are real....the instinct feeling of pushing left twice hard with the reigns to sideswipe a dragon next to you feels so natural and real.

Before I was playing Warhawk with tilt controls off - this definately makes me want to try it out if the flying can be as fun.

Onlone leaderboards - Im #164 in the world so far

I don't think that forcing motion controls is per se a mistake. Metroid, for example, "forces motion controls." However, I think that if you force them, they need to be perfect. Lair's are miles away.

Ok, I can agree with that. I'm not huge on the Metroid controls and still don't like motion controlling games, but Metroid's have been tuned to a point where it's pretty playable even if you don't like the control scheme.

Ktallguy, on CAG, they said Toys R' Us is selling it too.

Too many kittens :lol And GS is closer... so...

Yea, I just realized I've posted a TON in this thread.
I've really liked the concept of this game ever since I heard about it.
I really like the them and Draknegard 2 was a fun experience.

I know this game might not be 100% perfect, but looking at the live video on Kotaku made the game look totally fine. I didn't see any problems with the gameplay, it's a flight game/shooter so I guess that part of the game may get repetitive, but I figure I'll just play it little by little and enjoy it.

The music is awesome though, that's the one thing that I notice the most in those vids.

I called my local GS and they said a pre-order was required to play it early. My buddy had it pre-ordered so we're going to go pick up his copy.

Based on that dudes impressions, I can't wait to see that shit.

Yea me too, and they ship from Illinois and I'm in Wisconsin :(

I bought the PSN version cause I couldn't wait anymore.

OK initial heads up.

Holy shit does this game look and sound amazing. definitely a show off piece for your 1080p and 7.1 surround.

Plays similar to Rogue Suadron on gamecube. Missions are broken into pieces complete to get to next part of mission.

Controls are the issue and Im sure this will be what brings the scores down. Its hard to control but I think kinda on purpose. I mean your on the back of a freaking dragon, its not supposed to handle like a Lotus.

My copy is waiting at Gamestop, but I'm at home watching the kids :(

BTW check the "Secret Access" of the new Game Informer, it has a ton of tips on flight and combat.

I have never played any F5 games except for Turricans. I really wonder if I'd like that mission structure their games always have and whatnot. I remember even back then in Gamecube days, people weren't too happy with the way the missions played out. I think I'll eventually rent Lair, but the graphics whore in me wants to see it in person right now.

Reading first impressions...is this some sort of the weird "Wii Effect" with reviewers? Doesn't seem like players are having troubles with the controls at all after getting used to them.

What I've noticed is that a healthy portion of reviewers are really bad at games and usually find difficulty in the most easy of tasks.

OMFG

The music (orchestra), THX audio and graphics on this game are absolutely fucking amazing.

I've only been through the first level, but the production values on this game are amazing. From the menus to the cutscenes, it's all very stunning. As far as controls go, I'm doing pretty damn well going into the 2nd level without any problems.

i don't disagree -- but you'd be slaughtering wii games left and right if you held them to the same standard. and 'perfect' is a very generous description of an fps control scheme that doesn't permit the full independence of movement and aiming that are present on every other platform.

4.9 FROM IGN

He complains about sixaxis controls, and gave the graphics a 7.5.

Its either hit or miss or all the review sites have thrashed it, and people with the retail copy makes it sound real nice. I will rent first.

8.0 Presentation

From the opening movie to the dragon-flying-over-a-map chapter select screen, Lair has you engrossed in its medieval feel, which an interesting story and quality VO perpetuates.

7.5 Graphics

It's the definition of a mixed bag. The FMVs look awesome; the in-game stuff looks great but chugs; and the custscenes using in-game assets look framey.

8.0 Sound

There's a sweeping score that really captures the moment and some quality voice work, but there are moments when you'll be attacking a catapult and it seems like a sound effect is missing.

4.5 Gameplay

A bus-like feel and Sixaxis controls kill this game. In wide-open areas, it's okay, but the moment you need precision, you realize you’re screwed -- you can't corner, target or fight well.

5.5 Lasting Appeal

There are leaderboards to track, medals to earn and movies to unlock, but the frustrating control scheme will probably stop you from coming back for more.

4.9

Excuse me, let me choose my words better. They have to work. They have to do what you want them to. Metroid, Zelda, Cooking Mama, whatever: you can certainly point to issues here and there, but no more so than games that use traditional controls can have control issues here and there.

IGN said:
You guys should just totally ignore this guy, too. After all, reviewers are stupid. And they all probably played an early build. And they're bad at games and don't know shit.

Along with not posting porn, do not state or imply that PC gamers must upgrade every six months. In fact, just be like me and get a mac; revel in the graphical fidelity of COD2 provided by the non-upgradeable ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT with its stupendous 128MB of RAM. Or get a PC and be able to run resolutions that best any console by a chasm, with framerates 4x what Lair can apparently do (at the best of times). Actually, don't have an opinion about any of that and you'll be safe. We've both made it this long; good luck!

s'ok if you want to state Lair sucks sh-t; it may or may not. At this point, it's the poster child for deciding on your own whether a game "sucks" or not. Oddly, I think I still want it.

I don't get your reply, but OK..

and about lair.....oh boy...I'm going to trust my instinct and ignore reviews this time......I hope for the best......

It's a shame to waste all that presentation because of something so fixable.

Analog controls can't be hard to add.
Some direction on the level can't be hard to add.

You know I know this is medieval and stuff but immersion be damned I want targeting cursors, radars, computer readouts whatever gimme the whole HUD.

I don't think it's 4.9 for people who can control sixaxis better (or if it was better implemented? I dunno, I've only played flight games with mouse, analog stick, and flight sticks), but from experience I can say Motorstorm Sixaxis with Bike just pissed me off to no end. But with analog I love it to death.

What do you mean by that? I only got my Wii yesterday and I'm running around in MP3 without any problems, so I'm curious as to what you feel is wrong with the controls.
