Did anyone get a Konami demo disc when they preordered MGS3 from EB? I hear the disc contains a demo of Ys, Suikoden 4, etc.

I don't think EBGames.com have started shipping the game yet, at least it doesn't say so on their page (they should be any minute now though, GameStop started shipping), I asked if anyone knows what games are on the disc in another thread, but nobody answered.

I think I see Neo Contra, Silent Hill 4 (?), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles [2]... Can't make out the rest.

I bought the strategy guide with it, I wish I wouldn't have. :(

I could've used that money on a new component cable for my PS2... Or I could have put it towards a broadband adapter... Or I could have gotten some McDonald's on the way home. Yeah.

Is it the Limited Edition guide? I'm dying to hear any impressions on it, I never bought a strategy guide before but the extras on this one are extremely tempting, I just wanna know if it's really as good as it sounds:

I'm definitely buying LE strategy guide if it's anything like Onimusha 3 double-book LE guide. That one was just awesome.

I think I see Neo Contra, Silent Hill 4 (?), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles [2]... Can't make out the rest.
One of them is Rumble Roses, and one is Suikoden 4. None of those games is anything that is yet unreleased, I think.

Oh crap what the hell am I doing in this thread. Must leave forum till I complete the game to avoid spoilers!!

So I'm talking to the cute PARA-MEDIC girl via codec, and she recommends I throw the dead tree frog I just hunted at the next guard I come across to give him a scare. YES MA'AM! In fact I may very well just hunt animals if only to chuck at soldiers.

It's pretty funny how snake responds to almost every one of her conversations with the phrase "Can't wait to eat it!"

Oh and WTF is up with The Boss' VA? She sounded so regal and authoritative in the Japanese TGS trailer. Now she has some plucky under-grad voice that lacks the commanding presence she gave off when pimp-slapping snake. I want the battle-hardened bitch the Japanese get!

Just played it for about an hour. Am I the only one not feeling this game like the last 2. I played the others 4 or 5 hours when I got it. This one I got to the soldiers died and said, "Well that was fun."

... No. :( I forgot about the LE strat guide. I'll probably take this back tomorrow.

This gets a sticky and not Metroid Prime 2? GA is biased :lol
The GAF Elite determined by majority vote that IGN review scores would be the necessary condition for a sticky, and not Gamespot.

Playing it now actually. Is the dialog during the codec scenes supposed to jump and skip like that? Maybe I have a defective copy. Haven't played much so far, but damn I wish it had a Japanese voice option. The English voices suck compared to the Japanese trailer. Something feels a little wierd about this one so far. Going to play some more now.

mm...strange that you didn't soil them after the 8.7 score Kasavin posted.
Luckily I was not wearing them at that time!!

Seriously though, GS MGS3 review is one of the better so far, I have expressed my opinion about it in it's thread.

s the dialog during the codec scenes supposed to jump and skip like that?
'
In the demo there was no skipping of any kind. It's probably your copy... or your PS2.

Holy shit, this game is kicking so much ass thus far. Really impressed...

The demo section still didn't do much for me, but damn, it really starts to pick up quickly.

One odd thing, when I first started, the first really lengthy codec scene wouldn't load properly. Whenever the portrait switched between characters, it would delay and the dialog would skip. I cleaned the lens, though, and it seems to be fine (lots of dust on it too). Though, I didn't re-listen to the one convo that skipped. Hopefully that's the only problem I'll encounter...

The game is truly amazing looking, though. The demo didn't even begin to show off what this game can do. Not only that, the image quality is fantastic! I swear that it seems even sharper than the 480p enabled Jak 3! Obviously, the image quality still isn't up to XBOX or GC standards, but it's suprisingly crisp and clean for a 480i game (perhaps the best I've seen).

I won't comment on anything specific yet, as most people don't seem to have the game. I will say that most of the footage from the E3 2004 trailer can be found within the first hour of the game. I'm expecting some rather big suprises here...

Is the dialog during the codec scenes supposed to jump and skip like that? Maybe I have a defective copy.

No shit? You encountered it too? My PS2 is actually one of the newer 50001 models and reads everything else perfectly. I just assumed a dusty lens, but if someone else is seeing the same problem...perhaps it is something else. Did it seem as though the game was simply falling behind while loading different character portaits? Like, when switching to a new one, it would remain blank for a while before displaying the next one...and the dialog would skip as a result. It has only occured one time, though (the convo with the boss early on). Every other scene has been perfect...

Still, having come off of Half-Life 2...the near technical perfection of MGS3 is quite a nice change of pace. I was getting sick of technical hitches all and such...

Oh and...

Did anyone else select "I like MGS2" at the beginning? THAT was extremely well played, I gotta say. I was totally fooled for a second and had no clue what was going on. Very clever, Kojima...

The first codec conversation had like a 15 sec lagtime to load and the sound of the jungle I kept hearing in the bg was on some weird loop during that load. Made me think the game crashed or had a scratch, even worse I worried that Konami wasn't able to optimize those horrible load times of the codec from the demo. (Something I imagined was fixed since no reviews mentioned it) Fortunately, it's been running smooth after that though. Occasional weird audio glitches in codec, but nothing perfunctory.

The VO is subpar though for a few characters I agree. I think I am really sick of the way Hayter handles the Snake role. I can just imagine him really trying hard to keep that rasp in his voice, but it comes across as very unnatural. I thought he stunk in Twin Snakes too. I already expressed my distaste for the Boss.

The para-medic chick does a decent job of filling the "know-it-all, chirpy, cutie-pie role" though without sounding irritating. And the British commander isn't too bad.

You guys need a good ole HDloader methinks. Just pick up any crappy HDD and install the game on it, I'm sure you'll thank me later.

What happens when u choose MGS2? I chose MGS1...
According to IGN review, there length of the codec dialogs will be different to give the game different paces. I don't which option will give you a faster pace though.

Eh? There's an option to determine the pacing of the codecs? That's interesting. I'm assuming MGS1 is faster paced

Sorry, I just listened to the IGN video review again, they said the options will "influence the amount of codec and intructions you receive at the BEGINNING of the game." Guess if you played the previous games, they will give you less intructions such that the main game can pick up quickly. It most likely won't affect the later parts of the game. It makes sense now and sorry for the confusion.

omg I just got my copy from ebgames :D

the box art is sooo sexy

I can't play it till thanksgiving though...i got shit load of midterms and crap

they also had the strategy guide, but it's not the LE one and it's the regular one.

Does it have the slowdown of the demo? It wasn't didn't have the consistent framerate that MGS2 had compared w/ part 2.

Holy shit.

This game just doesn't let up so far. Every minute of it has been very engaging.

My personal GOTY so far (I've played Halo2, GTA:SA, Doom3, HL2 sitting in a box atm).

edited out a potential spoiler : I won't post anything about it until someone screams about it when they get there.

Ah, that may be so, but there is a much more interesting suprise awaiting those that choose "I like MGS2". I didn't even know what to think at first. :P

Seriously, if any of you have the game, just start it up and choose that option.

If you must know, though (only read if you don't plan on finding out for yourself)...

Snake or "Jack" starts out in the plane as normal...only it looks exactly like Raiden! So, you do the entire first segment with your character looking just like Raiden. When you finally land, you get to run around for a bit like this as well. I was really wondering just what the hell was going on until Snake receives a codec call informing him to go ahead and remove the disguise. He then proceeds to take off the Raiden face mask to reveal himself as we know him. I thought it was a nice touch and must admit that it had me fooled for a bit.

I'm curious about that skipping, though. I wonder what the problem is?

Does it have the slowdown of the demo?

No, it has been improved greatly. The framerate can still slow down a bit, but it is VERY minor in comparison to the demo. When I approached the bridge section with all of the enemies firing and chasing me down, the framerate barely skipped a beat (just a little bit of tearing at a couple points). It's much smoother overall, though still not perfect (just much closer).

This probably isn't the best place for this question but I just recently got an HDTV and it's got 2 component inputs on it. Well, one goes to my DVD player and that leaves just one remaining. How are you multi-console people dealing with situations like this? Do they make a component switcher box?

Well I have really only noticed the skipping in the early codec sections, none later on which is good. The game is great so far, but it's still more of the same, which is fine by me. I think the style used to place the game in the past has been done well. The only two issues I have with it so far are: #1, I think the new jungle setting is a little tight for the camera. I don't feel as though I have enough room to see the environment without going into 1st person. It just feels a bit too close, but the right analog stick movement helps a bit. And #2, the voice acting is fucking horrible for alot of characters. I do think Hayter is trying to hard now, but I'm used to it. I don't like the Boss' voice, but it might grow on me. The thing I truly hate the most, is the american voice for all of these Rusian soldiers, including that famous gun twirling one. Even MGS2 let Russian soldiers have a generic Russian accent. These guys sound like they are from Saved By The Bell. Yuck. Other than those nitpicks, I'm loving it so far.

:lol :lol

That's AWESOME. But I can see some people getting pissed off and turning the game off thinking that
it's going to be like MGS2 all over again. :)

Nevermind. Found answers via the magic of the search command...

SPOILER FREE IMPRESSIONS!!

Kicks ass! Trust me, this game rocks. The musical score is great too. Just getting deeper into the jungle and they got an awesome beat playing. Also, Kojima's got a real sense of humor. I was laughing my ass off for the first 10 minutes of this game. Man, all I can say, is that for a MGS fan, this is everything you could hope for. The game is just insanely good so far. Bout an hour in. I'll post tomorrow or something but I'm trying to avoid spoilers as well. Anyway, off to go play at 3 am with a report due tomorrow in school. Ah well, totally worth it :D

Holy shit that was great! I was like "k, odd question". And I didn't realize that's what it was until you just mentioned it. Btw, think choosing you like MGS1 or neither would both be the same thing? In any case, even people that don't like MGS2 would get a kick out of that. And the dialogue so far :lol "This is a virturous mission Jack", "Virtual mission?", "Viturous mission." "oh." Another wink at the fans

oh, and the skipping is no problem. I had the same thing for that one codec. Not as advanced technology in the 60's so a little skipping I suppose.

X-Play gave it a 4 out of 5.

Sessler was bitching alot about eating food, and how the game is even slower without the radar etc. etc. Liked the longer length, and the camo though, except that it takes a bit too long to switch out camo.

Still, not bad.

1) Is the gameplay as fast as MGS1 and 2?

2) Do the gadgets that replaced the radar work well?

I got a few seconds of glitchy sound in one of the early codec dialogs as well. I think it's a streaming/loading issue, and I had blamed it on my PS2 (one of the original US models). Glad to know it's not just me, though.

As an avid hater of the MGS2 storyline, so far 3 isn't bad at all. It's still early, though, and Kojima has plenty of time to fuck it all up. ;)

I ordered the US version today. Buggered if I'm waiting until March/April for the Aussie release. :lol

I watched the Gamespot video review, aware of the controversy the score has caused here, but it really sounds like Greg held himself back with the score. It all sounded great and it's like you're expecting him to easily give out a 9+, but I think he may have held back a touch when considering the non-hardcore fans of the series.

Which I disagree with. When you review a game, you review it with the target audience in mind.

Thank god, I thought it was just my copy or PS2.
