Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

I "played" the first three hours of this today. There were about 15 minutes of gameplay in there. Literally. :lol

It's pretty cool, but I mean, Jesus!

Just beat it. Throughout most of it I thought it was very good, but wasn't into it as much as the first two. The last 2 hours did much to change my mind. The climax and ending is just unbelievable. The chase and final battles at the end have to be some of the best ever in a game and the ending is extremely powerful and satisfying.

Indeed. Like I said, last 3 hours is worth the $50 alone!

Hey Anyanka, I don't own a PS2 but really love to hear about the major polt of the game. Do you think you can do a breakdown of the major plot stuff (of course spoiler tagged please). I would really appreciate it.

So what does everyone think of the Patriots now?

Ocelot said they could use the legacy to "revive" them. Does he mean literally bring the dead members back to life or just saying they can now fund new projects with new members? Hard to tell with the wacky stuff int he MGS universe...

So who were the names Otacon and Snake had access to at the end of MGS2? The wiseman's comitee members that had been dead for 100 years. They can't be the Philosphers from WW II because that wasn't 100 years ago....

Thanks, Pana - I got the food sorted and have now completed the game.
That first part where you lead Eva was a little random, though, but you just have to make sure you rush ahead and hide in a cove

Now that it's finished... WOW. The cutscenes are really bloated, but I guess that's the charm. I'm now thinking of playing through MGS1 and MGS2 again just so I can see the follow on story play out chronologically.

I really don't get all the criticism the voice acting is getting. Yeah, David Hayter is kinda cheesily weird as Snake ... but he was like that in MGS2 as well. Where was the complaining then?

The only VA who I feel damages the feel of the game is Ocelot, and that's mainly because the actor seems miscast. Boss? Great. Eva? Great. Sokolov. Decent. Major? Boring but decent. Volgin? Decent. Early part of Cobra Unit? Could be better, but they die fast. Latter part? Great.

In all, not bad at all. 10x superior to what we get in certain enthusiast RPG companies' localizations.

I used the Traq gun. I'd knock her down with a series of melee attacks and then shoot her while she was on the ground. Took forever.

The graphics in MGS 3 are incredible, especially the battle with
The Boss
and the ending that follows with Snake
visiting the grave
.

Technology-wise and art-wise this is my GOTY for sure: it is one of the best gaming experiences ever.

I beat the game in ~24 hours (game time), but I spent time going around, exploring qand stuff... but still I could have went through the game more carefully trying not to be seen and all... wow... just wow.

I really love the fact that in this game their are a few optional buildings(Bases) you can assult. The optional dock one took me forevor, but the Duronguv is too godly to pass up :D

Yea, the last few hours where amazing, and it was by far the best 3 hour ending ever. The chase and everything after that was just wow. However, i felt that they could have done without the 2 scenes at the end when they are on the WiG. Those felt a bit tacked on.

Im playing the game a second time on hard, and im doing a lot better than i did my first time. The story seems better too, because im noticing little hints. Good stuff

Oh could someone tell me how to get the spoiler box in my text?

He was like that in MGS1 as well... I can safely say that to me, the main voice cast in MGS3 sounds better than that in MGS1. Para Medic sounds better than very stereotypic Mei Ling, Major sounds about as good as Campbell (both sound great), The Boss sounds much, much better than again stereotypic Natasha, Volgin sounds about as good as Liquid (again, both great)

Complaint against not having russian accents goes down after you realize it was a Star Trek like design decision - that although they all sound to speak English to you, they infact speak Russian - done to avoid having everyone speak in stereotypical english/russian accents, a decision that I can appreciate.

It has spoilers which are marked, so go read it if you don't care about being spoiiled :P

There's a pretty obvious spoiler in one of the pictures on the top left when you enter the site, so expect to spoiled if you hit that link. :P I didn't care; the game's story is exactly what I thought it was...it was pretty obvious that Naked Snake
being Big Boss was indeed true once the character of "The Boss" was introduced. I pretty much figured he would take her name at the end of the game.

But the story is actually GOOD this time around, and this game more than makes up for MGS2 (which I still have never played all the way through), which was a dissapointment to me. PS2 GOTY easily; can't wait to finish playing it. :D

I just recreated one of the trailer scenes when snake snipes a guy on the outside of the cabin and a guy on the inside of the cabin with one bullet. It was freakin sweet :D

I'm 11 and a half hours in now. Just beat The End earlier. I'd say he's my favorite boss fight in the series so far. It wasn't fancy like most of the series fight. I had the fight moving along pretty fast till it started raining. That screwed me up for awhile.

Has anyone been collecting the frogs that are hidden? I saw one at a base but I didn't know how to get to it.

In the Cure viewer, is there a video for when he's having to cut a bullet or arrow out of his body?

So that's how you collect them. I tried picking one up off a desk I saw it on and had no luck so I just left it.

robo, they seem to be random because i've done the eating before and nothing happened then I did it a few more times and they showed him eating a snake.

Just want to drop a line. I am 10 hrs into the game and I am fighitng The End. I die a lot in this game but i think this is the best in the series. There are a lot of variations to "areas". I feel that this point of the game, it already has more gameplay content than MGS 1. Some of the real time cutscenes are the best I've seen on any console. The gameplay segments are actually longer but so are the cutscenes but I am not complainting. I love MGSs' story. Btw, I like how Kojima "surprise" you at the beginning of the game.

They might be random. I had a video of Snake cutting out an arrow after my fight with
The Fear
. But it only happen once.

Man, I beat this game earlier today and I have to say... DAMN! What a great game! Easily my favorite of the series so far, and those last three hours were amazing. Buy it now!

After what can only be considered a marathon gaming session, I finally finished MGS3 a few minutes ago, and I'm now sitting here completely blown away by what I experienced.

This takes Sons of Liberty and tears it into little tiny pieces.

This blows the original MGS out of the proverbial water.

It's un-frickin-believable how fantastic this game was. From beginning to end, the story picked up steam, and just when you think you know where it's headed and how things will turn out, you're proven just how unpredictable the game actually is. Only this time... it all makes perfect sense.

Visually, nothing on any console looks better. This is the new benchmark. Whether it be character animation or environmental ambience, I was astonished at every turn how gorgeous the game looked. And the sound in the jungle is outstanding, especially if you're one of the lucky few to have a home theater setup that can really bring the effect home.

Most importantly for many of you, the balance issue between gameplay and cutscene has been addressed in spades. While it's true that there are still tons of amazing cutscenes, almost every single one is interactive in some form or another. Whether it be simply adjusting camera angles on the fly to uncover hidden secrets or actually taking control during pivotal moments to propel the scenes forward, you'll never once find yourself sitting there wondering when the game will let you play again.

And there's not an ending on this planet that can hold a candle to this one. For once, the journey is actually 100% worthwhile. You'll walk away in stunned silence, mouth agape at how amazing it all was, trying to soak up the unbelievable characterization on display here. It truly is like watching the very best movie, there's no need for a Metal Gear motion picture, because it couldn't possibly look, sound or feel as good as this.

It's overflowing with replay value, so much so that I can't even begin to describe all the things that you'll want to go back in and do during the multiple times you're going to to play through this. Frogs, apes, hidden levels, new disguises, gadgets and much, much more.

Buy this game. Ask for it for Christmas. Trade in old titles you aren't going to play again. Get a paper route. Do whatever it takes to add this to your collection.

my only complaint about the voice acting are the pauses in between sentences. it breaks up the flow of the conversation. Unless it is just my PS2 trying to stream the voice? I dunno, but I don't remember it happening in SoL/Substance....

GOTY!? After an hour of this 'game' I am considering not playing any more. The lack of radar is really annoying, and it is made worse by the camera automatically going into first person when I crawl around prone in the grass. Is there a way to stop the camera from going into first person or a way to stay in third person without constantly standing up? Also when does this game get good? 5 hours in? 10 hours in? So far I'm siding with the Penny Arcade review.

I think the voice acting is still top-notch and don't understand the gripes about that. But the heavy cutscenes are still bothering me. Kojima has to be stopped. The Jack intro was very cool though.

Oh yeah, I was also encountering skipping and stuttering during the voiceovers, and I have a brand-new PSTwo. MGS3 is only the second game played on it. I have to think it's something to do with the MGS3 disc, or else Sony has real shoddy craftsmanship for PSTwos.

Three, maybe four? It's worth the time. Also you can't prevent the camera view from changing when you go into the grass. You can also use the motion detector if you really miss the radar.

Or save yourself time and stop playing his games. By now it should be obvious that his games do have long cutscenes and if they bother you then just don't play his games. It's not like they're the only ones available.

Anyway I just got through some of Grazny Grav (sp?).
That beating Volgin gives Snake is just painful. What stuck out most though was that look on Snakes face right before Volgin landed the final blow.

The stuff with Raicov before that had me laughing.

EVA: Now that you're disguised as Raicov you can do anything you want.

Snake: Even punch someone in the face?

EVA: Yah.

Snake: REALLY?!?

Is the motion detector available from the start? If not, when do you pick it up?

its not really a skipping or studdering during the voice overs, its just pauses inbetween sentences or so. Like a person who is reading off cue cards and doesn't know whats coming up next. It happens a lot in the radio calls, especially when you're calling Para-Medic about food stuff....maybe they mix various dialouge bits together?

edit: I am pretty sure you have the motion detector from the start (once you get your backpack).

I believe that one important aspect of MGS3 is a) knowing which items you have, and b) knowing what they do. I'm sure that many people will bail on the game without even getting a grip on things and discovering its true nature. A lot of the experience is what you make of it.

Alright, I'm a little ways past The Pain (
too easy - Ocelot was more difficult [Hard mode]
). Loving it so far. There are huge chunks of game before you get to cut-scenes and they're rarely more than five minutes. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'll comment more on the game design and everything itself once I've actually beaten the game, but I'm just really enjoying it so far. I mean, I'm not surprised or anything. The intimacy of getting to, and infiltrating bases, for instance, is exactly what I wanted to be. And that makes me very pleased.

just beat the pain. once you get over that preposterous initial deluge of cutscenes, the game actually lets you play a bit, uninterrupted. i'm really enjoying the open environments and gameplay variety. it's rare that a game has this many ideas and weird details.
has anyone else tried dynamiting the helicopter at the first base? try it! you can take out the shed, too. i'm not sure this accomplishes anything, but it's pretty cool.
. i don't think i'll ever get tired of feeding snake ridiculous animals and hearing him tell me how "tasty" they are.

mgs has always been fairly silly, but surely this is the silliest mgs game yet. most of the early cutscenes and dialogues are played for overt humor. there was a great codec conversation with major zero about james bond. and god bless any game that contains BEE GRENADES. i can only assume it starts to take itself seriously at some point? i'd be perfectly content for it to cruise along in the current absurd mode.

edit: oh, and once you get used to it, the game is much better for the radar's absence. finding a safe vantage point, scoping out the guard routes, and then putting together a plan of action is good fun. slows the pace down, but also lends the game dimension. using camouflage to hide in plain sight is great too.

For those that finished the game, what was your completion time?

Around 18 hours. Some stealth and caution, but mostly Rambo-esque tactics and shootouts.

Might be just me, but seeing
The Sorrow lurking right behind people with signs
was downright creepy. Especially before a certain boss battle.

I also beat
The End
in less than 10 minutes with the
thermal googles, sniper rifle and the shotgun. I just followed his foot prints, snuck behind him, shot him a few times with the sniper rifle, and never allowed him to get far from me. Last move he made was try to run past me and throw a smoke or stun grenade, then he stood behind a tree. I snuck over from behind and gave him 2 shotgun blasts at point range.

The ending is great,
watching the president award Snake the medal and the title of Big Boss was a really cool moment. We also get the traditional Ocelot phone call at the end that shows that he's always been a triple crossing, whore for hire.

I've just heard that there a commercial for f'n RUMBLE ROSES playing on some channel (could be Spike TV) all the time. Just thought I'd mention that. Konami is advertising that trash, and they won't make a commercial for their one game that actually has a chance to sell really well. Stupid.

Motion detector is pretty weak, but is available from the start as well as the MUCH cooler Sonar device. Be careful you only ping it when you know a guard isnb't standing nearby is all.

Also, if you haven't figured it out already, you can use the R-stick to lock the camera is positions that help you see stuff ahead(Click R3 to lock it in a specific direction). It's particularly helpful when you are moving south where the default view hides most of the visibilty moving in that direction.

End game Spoilers

It seems to me that the game implied that Ocelot was The Boss's son, due to his age, the position he held with the patriots, and the picture. I guess this would sort of explain how Liquid was able to gain control of Ocelot's body because he probably gained some of of the ESP ability from his father, The Sorrow.

I just have one question. When were the philosophers created? i beat this late at night so maybe i didnt hear right, but i thought they said they were created before the world wars. However, that doesnt explain mgs2's list where all the members died over 200 years ago.

GOTY... wow, what an unbelievable game. The last 3-5 hours of the game were the most exciting and fun hours that I have ever spent playing something. With this game Kojima has restored the love that I had for the series before Splinter Cell came along. I am firmly back in the MGS camp now. I can't believe GS gave this an 8.7 when it's a better game than the first two MGS games combined. There are so many places to go and things to do. The Cobras crush FOX HOUND and DEAD CELL not only in coolness but the battles were so much more fun. I was blown away with the graphics. What did you guys think of The Sorrow fight? The chase? The
Boss fight?
The waterfalls? The Caves? The Mountains? Beautiful huh? I couldn't believe my eyes. Have you ever paused to look up into the forest (I'm thinking right after the Sorrow fight) and check out the scenery? It was crazy. I loved SC:PT and I loved Halo 2 but like I said this is the GOTY.

The first two hours of the game were a bit weird (having to get used to the lack of radar,) and somewhat slow but continue to play because the game play and story pick up really fast.

Time for some spoilers...

The boss said she and The Sorrow gave a birth to a baby on the battlefield. I immediately though of Raiden, but that wouldn't make sense because he's so young in MGS2.

I nearly crapped my pants when I said Raidenkov do the Raiden side flip.

Have you guys checked the other radio frequencies? There is music on there.

Volgin was able to tell Snake was in Raidenkov's disguise by grabbing his nuts... LOL.

I managed to steer clear of the leaked character descriptions that were posted a long time ago so the whole "
I was waiting for you in my room
" comment by
Volgin
and the
nut grab
, which implied that they were
gay lovers
was a WTF moment right there.

Did anyone else put on the Raikov mask during the fight with Volgin?

Also, did anyone tune into the frequency that The Sorrow held up on a piece of card during one of the R1 moments? I forgot to.

Finished the game at 18 hours. It was better than the first two MGS games combined. Like always, it definitely was an "experience." Without a doubt, it has the highest replay value as well. The actual gameplay just shines through and through.

I did tune in, "You unlocked that door." is the message you get, not sure which door they mean.

I'm gonna have to play through it again because there are things that I obviously missed.

I never found the machine gun Snake uses in one of the trailers to fight off the flamethrower guards, nor did I encounter
Johnny
and the conversation showed in one of the last few trailers.

Did I hear the PlayStation 2 moan while rendering the graphics during the last fight with
The Boss
;)... Konami has a great bunch of coders and artists and game designers.... etc... :D.
