Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

oh thank god getting all those dogtags was a royal pain in the ass in mgs2 because you had to do it on 3 different difficulties to get the damn stealth camo. i must've played that game a dozen times.

can somebody tell me what kind of stuff i can unlock? there isn't anymore bandana or active camo to get by collecting dogtags is there? are there even dogtags?

After I finished the game I got the camera, the tuxedo, and the six shooter revolver

About 3 hours in. Does anybody else's PS2 make quite abit of noise during the Codec scenes..when a small movie window opens up telling you what to do? I'm damn afraid that it is killing my lens. Other than that, it is an awesome game really.

Btw, is there an MP3 of the new theme lying around anywhere? Dying to get my filthy hands on it

Yeah that seems to happen quite a bit. My PS2 (well it's my friend's actually, I only have a J PS2 15000 model unmodded, I borrowed his and bought MGS2 US) does it too. Everytime a new radio conversation loads it skips for a second or two very noticably and I can hear the PS2 reading. Then the conversation plays. Sometimes there's a pause between lines as if it's loading different lines from different places on the disc. Other than that great game so far yes.

I'm 7 hours in.
Backtracking time. :( At least I got to hear METAL GEAR mentioned! :D :D

The weird thing is that once I found it, it put it in the 6th codec slot under HEALING RADIO. There seem to be 7 other songs. Maybe they help you heal faster if you listen to them?

There are more. Here's what I have so far (me, jiji and someone from a chat I frequent worked on finding different ones. I can't remember all the track titles because my PS2 isn't on now, sorry.

at the warehouse exterior, right after you watch the cutscene, there'll be a soldier wheeling "the end" out of the room. if you snipe the soldier, "the end" wakes up, freaks out, and starts wheeling himself away. if you manage to snipe him in the head before he gets away, a weird reverbating voice says "END," "the end" and his wheelchair explode in a burst of green smoke, and one of the wheels flies over and smacks you in the head! it's the coolest thing i've seen in ages. i hope i haven't actually killed him.
i can't think of another game as full of bizarre details. it's one thing for a game to respond in the affirmative every time you ask: "can i do this?" it's entirely another thing for SUCH COOL STUFF TO HAPPEN when you fuck around. i'm enjoying this much more than i expected to.

GOTY... wow, what an unbelievable game. The last 3-5 hours of the game were the most exciting and fun hours that I have ever spent playing something. With this game Kojima has restored the love that I had for the series before Splinter Cell came along. I am firmly back in the MGS camp now. I can't believe GS gave this an 8.7 when it's a better game than the first two MGS games combined. There are so many places to go and things to do. The Cobras crush FOX HOUND and DEAD CELL not only in coolness but the battles were so much more fun. I was blown away with the graphics. What did you guys think of The Sorrow fight? The chase? The
Boss fight?
The waterfalls? The Caves? The Mountains? Beautiful huh?

The Boss will go down as my favorite boss fight in any game. I can't really think of any other game i've played that gave you an emotional attachment to the character. As much as she beat on Snake, I never really hated her. The way they ended the boss by going into a cutscene and having you pull the the trigger on her patriot was just perfect also. I thought it'd be like Sniper's end where everything was done automatically.

After this, i'd really like for the next MG to star her. She's my favorite character in the series along with Big Boss and SS. Like Big Boss, she'd be a great character character to find out more about.

One thing i'm wondering about the ending, why did BB shake the Presidents hand after finding out that he was one of the main ones responsible for him having to kill The Boss?

I read some posts on gamefaqs and appanantly he does die when if you decide to kill him at that particular spot. Crazy if that's true...kinda makes it cheap though, heh. I guess they had to put in some cheap way to kill him for the crazy speed runners out there

well that sucks, if it's true. i should've kept an extra save. now i might have to start over. :/ :/ :/

edit: it still sucks, but i guess i can respect it.
if you're going to shoot a guy in the head, i guess you should accept the risk that he might die. :lol
do you have a link to the gamefaqs thread, wario? i have a save a couple hours back. it shouldn't take me that long the second time.

Last night I made it to the swamp, which btw. looks really damn good - the game does slow down there quite a bit though, if you look right across the swamp in the first person view. I guess all those crazy water reflections and deformations are responsible for that. You can even dive down in the middle of swamp, and the water looks extremely dirty and muddy (you can also see some color banding under the water due to really low color range there, as the game uses a 24bit color mode)

The fight against
Ocelot's spetsnaz group of 9 soldiers
was really great. They were much more dangerous and clever than the regular guys. I died couple of times there but eventually I got them all. I think the Hard level of difficulty is just about right for this game if you've played MGS2 extensively like I did, at least it's been so far.

What are your impressions of the James Bond opinions/references in the game, especially in the presentation/introduction? Did Kojima proved that he could do a far better James Bond game than EA or Rareware?

I especially liked the A Cappella singing of the main theme while climbing up the huge latter to reach the top of the mountain...

He sure did, he covered all of the Bond bases, espionage, action, villains that talk too much, chases, deceit and the love scene.

How far into the game (percentage wise) would you say I am?

Just returned to the warehouse and about to head up the mountain. The last thing I did prior to saving was listen to a codec call from EVA regarding The End

About 40% I'd say.

And now I know why that MGS3 trailer said
"How do you like your Snake? We recommend SOLID."...you can capture Liquid, Solid and Solidus snakes in the jungle

Do you actually have a sniper rifle? Was one hidden away before you got to that point? Or did you just manage to hit him without a scope?

And for anyone, after grabbing a guard in CQC, how do I throw them to the ground? I read the manual section, but it didn't help any.

After CQC grapple, tap CQC and move the left analog stick at the same time. Note that it doesn't knock out like regularly and is really only good for holding someone up. If you can't do it, you shouldn't worry about it.
Tap CQC? You mean... I capture the guard by holding circle, release circle, and tap circle again while moving the left analog stick?

How do I use the Fake Death Pill properly? As soon as I use it, I die, and I don't get a chance to use the Revival Pill.

It's great for killing yourself when you've got a dozen guards on you, though.

When you die, you'll see the Snake is Dead screen, but it'll be garbled. So you'll be able to use the Rev. Pill with L2.

After you beat the pain and come to the area with the river with trees overhead, and those flying things above you, if you take a left instead of going straight(where that cutscene is) you will come to an optional dock base where the sniper rifle is.

Is there any other way to “beat” The Sorrow? Once I died, I took the revival pill I found out in a cell earlier...

Have you noticed that if you look with L1 before
The Boss shoots your leg with her revolver, The Sorrow is right behind her, holding a sign that reads "144.75" - A frequency that will unlock your cell latter...

Ok, I'm playing on Normal and just completed operation virtuous mission. CQC is awesome, but does it make the game too easy?

In the area with the red building where you have to retrieve Sokolov, I alerted one guard by accident in the middle. For fun, I grabbed my knife and tried to see how many I could take out before I died. Well, long story short, I slit the throats with CQC of every soldier and only lost about half my health. It was almost too easy. Fun, but easy.

Just started Operation Snake Eater, I'm loving this game so far. The cut scenes are amazing and brutal holy crap.

THERE IS NO RADAR! Why not make the game easier with CQC? I think that's a good call...

Well I'm not saying its a bad thing. I love CQC. Another level of strategy that helps Metal Gear Solid series single player beat down Splinter Cell. Also, CQC helps give Snake that extra aura of being a badass as well.

Honestly, the camera setting isn't bothering as much as I thought it would. It seems like the angle of the camera is a bit higher than previous Metal Gear games so you can see more. Plus being allowed to move the camera to a degree in different directions while moving helps out as well.

I was just at the part where
they show The End for the first time he was out in the open looking at the water for a while. I used the sniper rifle I got and I sniped the exploding barrel and it hurt him (killed a few guards too). Then I sniped him a few times, and once in the head and The End's lifebar seems to have depleted after the headshot. I think he exploded afterwards and one of the wheels on his chair flew all the way to me and it me. :lol I heard some guy's voice after that too, I am not sure who it was though (sounded like The Pain saying "The Pain"?). So did I just kill The End before my boss fight with him?
:S

I played it on normal my first time, and i am now playing it again on hard(60% complete so far) I have found that i had to use a lot more strategy in the boss fights on hard. The boss fights on medium were pretty easy because you could pretty much stand their and unload on the guy without worrying about dieing.

If you are comfortable with the gameplay mechanics i would start over and start it on hard. I dont think it would take that long because the begining is mostly cutscenes. I started playing hard for my first time, but since i wasnt used to the gameplay mechanics i just got killed...repeatedly. Since i was just getting killed, i started over on medium.

So, yea the game is more fun on hard because the A.I seems to be better, and the boss's are harder, which forces you to use more strategy.

Edit:

Yes, you did Leshita

Questions for those who have beat the game:
When you and Ocelot do that duel on the plane... I chose the left gun and proceded to do the clicks until I shot out a bullet. Now, I didn't move the analog stick so I was wondering when I did fired that shot and hit the wall, could I have moved the analog stick to aim for Ocelot's head? Also, is there a second ending or different cutscene if I chose the wrong gun?(Or was there even a wrong choice?)

BTW, the scene where you and Ocelot both fire the sixshooters rapidly at each others head but with no bullets in th chambers was beyond awesome :)

Ok, I had been rereading some of these posts and it looks like there is a boss fight that last over an hour (!!!!). Sounds intriguing, can't wait to see what happens! Everyone says the fight is awesome too. That's amazing to have a boss fight so long and still keep you glued.

I chose the left gun too but when it came time for the duel, I switched to FPV and aimed the weapon directly at Ocelot. Seems the bullet is a blank regardless so I doubt the situation will change much if you choose the other gun.

Edit: Beaten.

When you choose the wrong gun, Ocelot shoots a blank at you. He also lets you keep the gun, which you can use on the next play through. From my game, the left gun had the bullet, while the right gun was empty. It's blank either way, although I don't know why a real bullet shoots near his head when you pick the right gun. Obviously you can't kill him though, heh

Ah, when I fired the gun, I didn't aim at Ocelot (because I thought the gun was already aimed at him :lol). I just kept pressing [ ] really quick and all of a sudden the bullet shot out and hit the wall. Now, the cutscene shows Ocelot looking at the wall and walks up to snake saying " Well seems like my luck has changed.." then walks up to snake and pats him on the shoulder. Then Ocelot says "Until we meet again" jumps off the plane (I would have pushed him off anyway :lol ).

About the Keratins
i read on gamefaqs, the guy also had pictures to prove it, that if you collect all of the frogs you get the stealth camo

Keratins are the green frogs

Grrr...is it normal that there's no opening titles FMV in my MGS3 copy like in MGS2? It's bothering me. I've left the damn title screen alone and still nothing!

Just keep playing. I was bother by this as well, but it's obvious that Kojima was influenced by a certain movie :P

Some interesting spoilers about EVA:

If you interrogate EVA with your knife, she will tell you some funny things like when she DID her first time and more... :lol :lol :lol

If you shoot her with your tranquilizer gun, she will make some funny noises...

And if you kill her... someone would tell you on the continue screen something like "snake, you've changed the future..." this actually lead me to think that EVA might be the mother of solid, liquid, and solidus...

Spoiler :

After beating it, I REALLY want to play around with
the Boss's moveset in the regular game. Holy shit she does a lot of cool stuff if you fight her hand to hand.

Though I see why they didn't give you her moveset though, she's the boss after all.

And really, I can sort of see how it can be worked into the CQC mechanic as well, with most of the actions being context sensitive and all. But I would LOVE to own some guards head on with some of the moves she did.

God I wish it was an unlockable though, that beating the boss gave me with that moveset was just so humbling.

The ending was genuinely touching, I haven't seen such an emotional ending in anything in such a long time.

MGS3's art direction just has no equal right now. I mean literally, everything just clicked so well that nothing stood out as particularly a standout.

Other games may be more technically proficient in the graphics department, but I've never seen a game where everything worked so seamlessly with one another that as a whole, this game is just a piece of art.

I mean, in most of the games today the graphics can get so uneven that when something awful does pop on screen it REALLY stands out (like say a normal mapped heavily pixel shaded character standing in front of a blatantly 2d background).

For some more fun if someone missed this :

Near the end of the game -

when you fight Volgin, if you aim up at the railing you can actually take pot shots at Ocelot :lol

He says stuff like "Not me!" and runs around trying to dodge you. It was absolutely hilarious when I tranq'd him too lol

I stumbled acrossed it by accident when a bullet ricochet'd off the wall and actually hit Ocelot - his health meter actually then popped on screen

MGS3's art direction just has no equal right now. I mean literally, everything just clicked so well that nothing stood out as particularly a standout.
I agree 100%. The game is just an amazing accomplishment on that front so far. Like the best crafted film cinematography, basically. Although the range of the environments and conditions has been pretty large already, everything is so obviously part of one picture, everything clicks perfectly. I think Shinkawa and his art team have outdone themselves this time (and I already consider them to be the best in the industry, only topped perhaps by Ueda's Ico art department team).

Ok, I'm playing on Normal and just completed operation virtuous mission. CQC is awesome, but does it make the game too easy?

In the area with the red building where you have to retrieve Sokolov, I alerted one guard by accident in the middle. I was worried about that as well, so I started playing on Hard. It was still reasonably easy (I played the demo a lot, though) until I got to the point where I had to fight nine special soldiers. CQC efficiency became so erratic there (they were defending and attacking fiercely), and I was dying a lot, so I decided I'd better try something different and more strategic (which worked after couple of retries). Regular soldiers also seem to be throwing more granades on Hard, and generaly being more agile, that's a good thing. I think your energy also drops a bit faster on hard level than what I remember from the demo. In general I just try to avoid being seen, because even with CQC working at it's best, you lose a lot of energy when you have to fight lots of them, so it's usually not worth it. I decide whether to hide and wait, fight or restart (take a pill) depending on where I am at the given location. In general I've been very content with the difficulty level so far (on Hard)

What are your impressions of the James Bond opinions/references in the game, especially in the presentation/introduction?
I think the Bond elements were nailed nicely, it really feels like *old* (and good ;) Bond style, done with today's technology. However, despite obvious Bond influences here and there (Eva introduction cutscene :P ) I love it that the game is still very much it's own thing. It feels very much like MGS.

Did Kojima proved that he could do a far better James Bond game than EA or Rareware?
Well, I certainly like the game tons more than any EA's Bond. Haven't played much of Golden Eye to be able to comment.

Ok, just beat it again, apparantly you can hit him, but it will be a blank shot so it won't hurt him. I guess I missed him the first time cause I swore it made a mark on the wall behind him...still doesn't make sense!

I've already watched the ending three times, it's so great...I must have the OST now. The music is so moving when

was this when
you first get to the docks? shortly after fighting the pain and seeing those hoverchair things for the first time? after a cutscene where ocelot plays russian roullette with sokolov and sokolov pees his pants? because i just got there and i don't have any sniper rifle yet. i hope i didn't miss anything like that...but i got the ak47 and shotgun afterwards, and i don't think they'd give me a sniper rifle before an assault rifle.

i'm about 4 hours in, and this game is fucking mind blowing. i spend so much time just exploring and killing as many animals as possible, there's so much to do...this is the gta:sa of linear stealth action games...i did miss one entire section because i was in alert mode and just sprinted through until i got to a cutscene, and then didn't go back because that cutscene happened to be a boss fight...that and i was lazy

random spoilers
the pain was really a stupid boss, i didn't even lose any health on him...i just hid behind a rock and dove under when he shot bee grenades or bee bullets at me. also, bee bullets are retarded. i thought those hoverchair dealies would catch me for sure when i was making my way up the river, but then i remembered the croc hat! swam all the way up, killing fish along the way and eating them to hear snake's various witty remarks.

the game is hilarious too...the end snoring while they talk about him...the repeated embarassments of revolver ocelot (the best one so far being when eva rides her motorcycle on his face), and the ridiculous codec conversations. hell the codec conversations are actually pretty good this time around!

I'm really taking my time with this game. Oh! I found that scene with Johnny Sasaki that was in the trailer. You just have to throw the food that he gives you outside of the cell and after he eats three of them, the cutscene plays. It shows you the frequency to get out of the cell on the back of a picture he shows you if you missed out on the suicide pill or the time that The Sorrow shows it to you.
