Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

Love the attention to detail in this game - you even get to see that Eva is used to eating very well. Dissapointed to see "Breast Enhancement" in her medical history though, they looked so real...

Ok, you REALLY do suck at gaming. Just follow the path in the caves. It's pretty straightforward actually.

Isn't it possible to just look at your map?

Just finished it...

Game of the f'in Year!!!!

Also, the absolute best ending ever to make its way into a game. I was blown away...

Son...

You've got a way to fall
They'll tell you when to go

They are picking on you still
But they don't...know

A little known light bonus for the pitch black caves: the binoculars. The effect isn't very strong, but it beats blindness if you don't have much else left to try.

Haha found my way out. It was really tough, let me tell you. Anyway, so far I'm loving the game. My only complaint is Volgin's voice...Otherwise, I'm completely feeling the game.

Haven't seen this mentioned here yet : but apparently there's a really bizarre way to kill The End :

save during fight, set your PS2 clock ahead like a week or a month, reload game - The End would have died from presumably natural causes and disappointed that you never fought him
:lol

I read elsewhere that...

If you somehow shoot the end while he's in the wheelchair (must be right after the cutscene where you come out of the cave after beating the pain... can't really remember) you'll have killed him and the whole area where you fight him later on will just be filled with Ocelot's guards. I don't know if this is BS or not but it should be a pretty good technique if people ever try to do a speed run on this.

This is B.S. since you only see him during the cutscenes. The area is only filled with 2 (or 4) guards after that Volgin / The Boss discussion...

EDIT:
Forget that, I just read the Brady Games' Strategy Guide, and here what they're saying...
Thos who found the Dragunov Sniper Rifle and have a quick trigger finger can sidestep a later boss battle. Dos so by sniping The End on the dock as he is wheeled back inside the warejouse. Immediately equip the sniper rifle when the cinematic ends and shoot the guard pushing the wheelchair. Continue firing at the wheelchair-bound old man until you kill him. You'll know you succeeded in taking him out if the wheelchair blows up and flies through the air toward Snake's position.

Those playing through the game for the first time are advised to allow The End to be wheeled safely back inside the warehouse. The battle against The End is one of the highpoints in the game; it would be a shame not to witness it firsthand.
I agree with that last statement.

???

I managed to shoot him after the cutscene

Huh? You CAN kill him before actually meeting him as Mooreberg mentioned.

Actually it is legit; I have done it (posted about it a bit earlier in this thread.
He will explode after you kill him and the wheel from his chair will fly all the way across the water to hit you.
:lol

It seemed weird being able to skip a boss battle at first. Who wouldn't want to fight The End besides someone doing a Time Attack by trying to finish the game as fast as possible?

Kojima should just direct the movie if it gets made. Its obvious that he knows enough about Western pop culture to do it and his game is as cinematic as they come. I still don't see how the transition would be that hard and as big a movie buff as he is, I'm sure he has actors/actresses in mind.

I agree!

I haven't picked this game up yet...too much on my plate right now. :P

But due to reading this thread I'm all hyped for it...must...hold off....for now.

After the fight with the Fear, EVERYONE should head down to Ponizovje South(south of the warehouse). Marconelly mentioned it before. I swear its the most beautifully rendered scene I've ever seen in a video game. This game is seriously doing things I thought were impossible for the PS2. I'm on my second playthrough, and I'm still amazed by the talent of Kojima's team. Holy shit.

Has anyone killed
The End
without having to fight him?
I forgot what level i was in. After the cgi of Sokolov wetting his pants, it cuts to The Boss pushing The End out to the peer. Well after numerous tries I managed to snipe The End just right before the KGB solider wheels him in the warehouse. I'm not sure if i killed him but you hear him moan and the wheel of his wheelchair flys to hit you.

Is that the place where Snake ends up at after the fight with The Sorrow? That was the section that really stood out to me. I also really liked the water shattering effect that happens when Eva jumps through the waterfall on her bike.

I'm almost at the end of my second playthrough (at Extreme) and I was wondering about two things.

1. How do you get guards to eat rotten/poisonus stuff? The only guard that seems to have an appetite is
Johnny, the guard outside the cell you get imprisoned into
. Oh and also
Raikov
.

2. Why do guards seem to be afraid of snakes alone and not of scorpions and other dangerous animals you through alive at them?

Spoilers Concerning Ocelot

If you follow the link you will come to the transcript of the codec conversation between Snake and EVA talking about Ocelots Birth. Thought id post it if anyone was interested in reading what they actually said.

I heard that you need to blow up their food supply depot, and make all the guards say how hungry they are. Ive gotten the guards to say how hungry they are, i just didnt think to throw rotten food at them

Best way is to blow up a food supply shack with TNT. Then return to the area after going somewhere else, and the guards will complain about being hungry. Throw any food in their path, and they will eat it, bad effects and all.

2. Why do guards seem to be afraid of snakes alone and not of scorpions and other dangerous animals you through alive at them?

Scorpions/Spiders are bloody hard to see. You can stilll poison guards by throwing either one unto them, though.

Oh, so you have to toss the cage onto their body, not on the ground nearby them?

Another question: has anyone found actually useful to hang from a tree branch? Guards see me as I'm on fire so I cannot understand why I should ever try that.

I've completed the game on Extreme and got a "Orca" status. I've menaged to get about 98% (I missed a couple of them) of those green frogs. Got nothing new. Just
the Patriot, the camera and the suit

WOW...

Isn't it ironic? Subconsciencely (since neither of Ocelot and The Boss seems to know), Ocelot is jealous of Jack (Snake) being treated like The Boss' son...

+1 Kojima

Sort of, the first time you get there the sun is setting. After speaking with the chief of the lab, the area is set during the day, and the way the trees relfect on the water is just beautiful. Speaking of the fight with The Sorrow...it would look incredible if it weren't for the framerate, hehe. Damages the mood a little, I think. That scene with EVA is good stuff, too.

I made it to The End last night, and spent some time there, but ended up 'dying'. The whole setup is so f'n awesome, I think I'm going to love this fight maybe even more than the fight with Fear. Such a huge contrast.
Now,
next time I got to the End, I tried to save the game when the fight started, and the girl warned me that it might not be the best idea... Still, I saved to a new file and went to sleep. Now I'm thinking, what the hell was she trying to warn me about. What will happen? She said something like "Hope to see you soon", and I really won't be back soon. I don't want this spoiled btw, so if anyone answers, answer with spoiler tags.

Isn't it?! Amazing looking, really. And now consider how non-obvious that location really is (well, at least so far, maybe they will use it later on in the game). That location, and the mangrove canal, right after you get out of the cave, are two of my favorite locations so far, (as far as visuals go at least).

The framerate is weird at certain points. Like when you first get to the swamp area the framerate is really low. But everytime I went there after that there weren't any framerate problems. Then at the end where you have to bring Eva with you the framerate is low if you look in the first person view, but after a few seconds it clears up and there aren't any problems.

I finished the game yesterday, and
throughout the game one thought kept coming back. Eva didn't know the password. She never told Snake "La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo" when they first met. So at the end, it all made sense why she never said that. I was almost getting worried. ;)

Wonderful game, one of the best games I've played this year, if not the best. And nice to see a game with such a great ending.

I think so far this year, this is my favorite single player game. I just love the MGS series, and this game doesn't dissapoint.

I don't have much time to play games, with work and all, but I've been playing this game at every opportunity. I just beat The End last night. Wow.
Talk about a great battle. Took me especially long, since I didn't know about him being able to sneak up behind you and capturing you. I could see how some people could hate that fight, becuase of the length/ slow pace, but for me, it was one of the more intense boss fights I've ever played. While not especially hard (fairly easy in fact), it was so much fun sneaking through the jungle trying to spot him before he spots you. The atmosphere of that fight was incredible. So cinematic, laying in the brush, listening for him with your directional mic, and all of a sudden it starts pouring rain. Combine tha with great jungle sounds and awesome graphics (for a ps2 game). Wow.

Anyways, the only downpoint of this game so far would be that the beginning starts out a little slowly, with a lot of codec/cutscenes. That, combined with the somewhat dated controls/camera, could turn some people off. Once you get into it though, wow, this is good stuff. So far single player GOTY for me.

Those have certainly become rare as of late. If games are going to have set up endings for sequels, I wish they'd do them more like MGS does. Where you get an actual ending to the game you just beat and then the set up for the sequel, instead of just getting a set up for the sequel which seems to be happening more and more lately.

Does anyone know
who Ocelot talks to at the end of the game? The general reaction says that Ocelot was talking to Gurlukavich (sp) and the director of the CIA...but...who is the director of the CIA? They made it like it was a big deal so it had to be someone in the game, no?

Re: The End boss fight:

I just used the Thermal Goggles and the M37 Shotgun for both The Fear and The End. They were both easy as pie to beat, and not that intense at all. Did I cheat myself by figuring out I should use the goggles, or did you use them too?

I did exactly the same thing, althought I can't say fighting The End with Thermal Goggles was a piece of cake: you can't see through trees and rocks.

I also used the thermal goggles. At first it didn't really help, because I still didn't know where to look for him. (I didn't know that the directional mic worked so well.) I mostly stuck to sniping to kill him. Maybe that made it more fun for me. I've heard of a lot of people just finding him, and continuing to run after him everywhere he goes. That kinda takes the fun out of the hunting for him IMO. Anyways, I thought it was a cool boss. Now the fear... once you use the thermal goggles, that's an extremely easy fight.

Yeah, I figured that might have taken the fun out of it. I will try not to do it that way on my second time through.

If you're chasing him around, you can see his footprints with the goggles, which makes him super-easy to track. The only challenge is in getting off a shot before he does when you come face to face.

Both of the fights were cool, though. Just because they weren't hard doesnt' mean they weren't fun. That being said, I expected more out of the guy after the way he was built up.

Agreed. Harder difficulty does not make a better boss. I like the bosses so far because all the solutions to beating them have been logical (the solutions make sense, they're aren't impossible to figure out on your own, and seem somewhat intuitive like MGS, ZELDA, etc.). I like games that make you think logically. They make beating a boss more rewarding.

Since MGS games are more like playing a story, I think it works better that the boss fights aren't frustratingly hard. For some games like Ninja Gaiden, that are more arcadey and has a simpler plot, it works well. That game's main appeal is the gameplay, and challenge. But for something like mgs that's main appeal is the story, it would become too distracting to the plot. I think the balance is very good.

Just finished the game myself...great story, great game, like it a lot...lots of surprises I wasn't expecting throughout the game, better than MGS2 =)

As a total cross-promotional gimmick they should have put Eva in Rumble Roses =)

Food supply shacks are rooms or buildings that have a very small interior with a couple of RC mates or rations.

Likewise, you can blow up munition depots (the similarily small rooms with new weapons or a bunch of ammo) in order to reduce enemy weapon possibilities or ammo limits.

Oh, so you have to toss the cage onto their body, not on the ground nearby them?

Yeah. A snake in front of them might freak them out, but most of the time a scorpion or spider is too small for them to see and too well camoflaged. Throw it right on them, and they suffer the effects right away.

Throwing near does work sometimes though, for example the
johnny conversation

You probably already know this, but the ga-ko camo only makes noise if you haven't shot the green frog in the area yet. The noise is also locational, so by pressing start twice (to get in/out of the menu, no need to re-equip camo) you can trigger the noise again and hear if you're closer or farther away.

Pro Logic 2 users have an easier time because you can spatially tell which way to go.

just got finished beating ocelot. even as a youngster he's damn good. but cocky, got the drop on him by using my stun grenades but he would recover quickly. and those caves.......wow.... is this really PS2? and the first of the cobra unit, the pain. wasnt a pain at all but he gave a decent challenge. and hover boards! :lol thank god i had my croc hat on though or that would have been a bitch to get through. but what graphics...... *drool*
wildlife everywhere and a beautiful sunset, multiple characters actively searching you and it doesnt chug at all...

by the way, does anyone know where i can find the water camo? it would make going through this area a whole lot easier.......

Another way to cheat The End, at least once:
Use the Fake Death Pill during the fight, The End will come to you and tries to carry you away on his back. Then you can revive yourself and do your job... :lol :lol :lol You can only try this once...

You may have known this: another way to get out of the prison:
Eat a lot and then spin yourself in the Survival Viewer interface. You will throw up when quiting the menu. Then the kind Johnny will open the cell door, come in, and ask you what's wrong... Sometimes kindness can be a bad thing...:lol :lol :lol

Yeah, I know. I missed some of them either 'cos they where hard to shot at (
during the final sequence on EVA's motorbike
) or simply because even if I could hear them I couldn't get to see them (ie. the one in the cave).

BTW, do you know what happens if you get all of them?

Thanks for the explaination about the depots. Didn't know you can destroy them.

TTP said:

You get the stealth camo AKA cloaking device. Unfortunately it's not that useful since you can't carry it between difficulty levels, but I guess it was too much to ask for replay value on par with MGS2.
