Official Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Thread

IAWTP, everything about this game is just so amazing. I can't understand how anyone who considers themselves a gamer _NOT_ like this game.

And Gamespot's 8.7 score is just wrong. It's one of the greatest experiences I've had as a gamer.

Really, anyone who gives this game's graphics alone below a 10 shouldn't be reviewing games. Taking points off for the frame rate or the camera (which is more of a gameplay issue) is just ridiculous given the game's character designs, lighting, models and just what konami has managed to do with PS2. I guarantee we'll never see another game on the system that looks as good artistically and technically as this.

I consider the gameplay more subjective, but being an artist myself I can't help but appreciate the hell out of shinkawa's art direction.

I agree...MGS3 has pretty much raped ICO in the art department. Nevermind the other games.

Anyway, on my first play-through
I thought The Boss was hard as hell, took me many tries to beat her. The battle was simply reduced to a sniper battle. On my second playthrough(on hard) I just felt like using CQC and learned how to counter her every single time. Slamming her to the ground actually inficts more damage than a bullet. The fight can be over in a minute. :P Here's to hoping that the bosses get *really* tough in extreme. The Mk22 makes things even easier, since you can hit them 3 times in a row most of the time.

holy shit

Hrm, some more interesting little-seen bits:

1.
Try putting on the Ape mask when The Boss can see you. She seems to get confused the first time around.

2.
If you have the Raikov mask on before setting the last C3, Volgin has an interesting reaction at the start of the pit fight.

3.
If you don't want the Spirit camo and just want to speedrun the Sorrow battle, drown yourself and then use the revival pill.

4.
Just tried the glowcap tactic and it seemed to work - toss a glowcap during the pitfight and it should absorb an electrical attack. For some reason chaff seems to be useful there too.

5.
If you're really paranoid about The End sneaking around, try setting claymore mines behind you. I'm not sure if The End takes much or any damage but it can take out the parrot if nothing else.

Anyhow, I pretty much agree with Miburou's comments, although more along the lines of that the survival gameplay style just isn't as compelling to me as the sneaking gameplay style. MGS3 is still amazing but I'm not convinced about handing out GOTY yet.

Wow I just found out something very interesting after reading over the profiles for some characters (don't read unless you've beat it):

While reading over the profiles I was looking at the codenames for characters, Raidenovich is Raikov, Thunderbolt is Volgin, Naked Snake is Jack/John ect. And then I come across Sokolov...His codename? Director Sokolov

snake, his name is director sokolov because he is the director in charge of developing the shagohod.

*ahem* so yesterday i start playing after one week (i had just beaten the pain) and all my food was rotten!!! GAAAH!!!!

the game just keeps getting better and better, sneaking
into granin's lab and finding out that he is friend's with otacon's father is a HUGE shock to me. why didnt the russian's hire this guy instead of that pants-wetting sokolov? (by the way, what the hell does crocked mean? :lol :lol :lol .
but the biggest shock of all was finding that it was granin who had the idea for the metal gear rex is even bigger. so that answers at least one question from MGS2.
gurlokovich must have had access to granin at some point and have been told about metal gear rex, correct? and snake/big boss obviously remenbers this conversation and that's why he's so hell bent in the future to acquire a metal gear so that he can challenge the patriots.

Like I said earlier, don't read if you haven't beat the game as it has alot of spoilers in it.

Everything falls in place now.

You have Sokolov telling you to leave him there and you don't really seem him afterward. The guy was screwing everyone over like Ocelot.
But where does GameSpy took that info? Why should we beleive them...

Although, I like your theory...

is shagohod even capable of moving great distances by itself or is it pretty much a short range artillery piece that is capable of firing a long range missile from a set position? where granin's "metal gear" designs smuggled out before the russians could find out about them?

by the way, were can i find any of that medicine that gets rid of the arrow that the fear fires at me? i have none left and it's draining me? i think i can beat him if i dodge a few of his attacks but will i bleed out if i leave the arrow in?

a water FACE paint? I got the camo but not the face paint. Damn, where is it?

After you beat
The Fear go back to the area where you first find flying platforms hovering over the water, now just swim south and it should be right near the entrance to the caves.

Also you get a new face paint if beat the game with a top rank, no alert, no continues, no kills, less then 15 saves, and under 4:30 hours. I'm attempting it right now on extreme.

Dig arrows out with the knife.

Oh, for second playthrough people, an interesting note about a little used camo:

-
The Cold War camo is a lot more useful than people realize. As long as you're not fighting a boss, you're basically invincible from the front. That means during the jeep chase nobody but the Shagohod itself will fire at you. It also means that when hunting snipers in the forest (provided you took The End out from the wheelchair position), they can't shoot you (and will often give up their position by fidgeting and swearing about not being able to do so).

If you really wanted to CQC every guard in the game for interrogation info, this camo is the way to do it.

I've unlock a few things
monkey mask, the patriot, toxedo
, but how do I use them? I've tried starting a new game but they dont appear in my items.

Did you grab your backpack? They are in there.

Previously mentioned question:

-No way to keep track of frogs shot, but I think they carry over if you're still using the same savegame (ie: second playthrough using the cleargame file, you won't have to shoot every frog).

Ahhh, camo bits:

-Like I mentioned before, Ga-ko quack effect is locational. If you have DPL2 you can just keep activating the quack to zero in on a frog.
-Watch your grenade count while wearing grenade camo, heh.

-I guess other camo's are related to clearing ranks? From a glance, types I've never seen before but are definitely in the game somehow:
Infinity (infinite ammo), Auscam, Brown, Desert Tiger, DPM, Flecktarn, Green, Kabuki

no,no, the thing i need to patch up after i dig out the arrow. syptic? i forget what's the name?

Well, styptic can be found in plant form if you're really desperate and can't find the prepackaged stuff. But chances are very good you won't bleed out otherwise; just perform as many of the healing steps as possible (dig out the arrow, bandage) and Snake should eventually pull through.

the plants that carry styptic and other curing medicines are in the form of little flowers. They are pretty hard to recognize, and the only reason i found them the first time was that i had my thermal goggles on.

hm, sadly, one little flaw in the game is you can't up the difficulty and play with those items. You'd have to play on the same difficulty again.

:eek :eek :eek

I just beat the game on Hard and played through not killing anyone but the summary said I killed about 15 people. Anyone know where I could be messing up?
Does Eva's kills count?

HAHAHAH this is hilarous from the Kojima interview:

"Another thing we wanted to do was something that goes in the other direction of healing. Tunes that you listen to that lower your stamina. We were going to sing songs ourselves, but that never happened. We were just going to take turns singing "Snake Eater" and that drops your stamina, but that didn't happen."

:lol :lol :lol :lol

I'd put a spoiler tag there... ;)

Anyway,
u sure u didn't kill anyone during the last chase sequences? I think that counts too.

When you "fought" the Sorrow, were the 4 bosses the only people who appeared?

They used to have one on the Game Secrets/ Cheat Codes part of the MGS3 page, but they took it down like a week after the game came out. I still don't know why they did it, but it used to have an entire list of the Codec freqs to call.

No I used the Tranq gun for all those guys, although I guesss a couple could've gotten run over and stuff when I shot the driver and not the gunner.

Gribbix,

I might have seen some regular soldiers during that part but it was hard to tell cause my TV sucks heh. Still don't know how i would have killed 'em though.

Just started playing the game. Which seems to be the best for GAF? Killing or just using CQC to knock them out?

Also, spoiler.

After the factory blows up in the beginning and you're replaying the first area, but at night, I climbed a tree and saw what looked like a stuffed frog on a rock. What's the deal with that?

I already tried them, and none of those work on my game. What I'm wondering is if the soldiers that give the frequencies out are placed at random or are they at specific areas. :P

Just finished 2nd time through, got it down to 6 hours and a Kerotan rating (finally got all 64 frogs too). The Patriot sure helps ;)

Just in case anyone was wondering, on different difficulties the radio frequencies are all different. This includes all the healing frequencies. I'm replaying on Hard and none of the ones I had on Normal work.

I'm in the middle my second run through, noticed something I didn't last time:

Volgin said he was waiting for Raidenovich in his room... is this supposed to be some off color reference to both of them being... ah... friendly?

I had known about the crotch crabbing part even before playing the game (E3 trailer this year) but didn't pick up on the undertones of what Volgin was saying before.

:lol

Killing is a more permanent solution, but effects your final rating. I usually only kill guys I get into shoot outs with. Everyone I capture gets a knockout -> tranq dart.

One thing I always use direct throw for is if I am seen. Using the CQC hold -> throat cut usually allows them enough time to call for backup since they have a radio much like Snake's (I guess the other guards can hear their severed trachea gargling :D), but if you use direct throw immediately you should be in the clear. I think the second playthrough I was seen overall more times than the first, but was in far fewer gunfights thanks to direct throw.

CQC is also important if you want to "knockdown" guards *permanetly* in a "no kill" game. All you have to do is grab your victim, then push him on the ground (direction on the analogue stick + CIRCLE) and quick draw your gun toward him for a "face in the dust" hold-up. He wont get up even if you leave untill someone finds him or the alarm is trigged. I can get a whole room crawed with guards laying on the ground. That's a funny sight really :)

Yep.
They are indeed lovers. Altho Volgin is bisex since he seems to like having some fun with Eva too.

Try wearing the Raidenovich mask at the start of the Volgin fight. I'm not sure if you have to have it on before the cutscene that triggers the fight.

Interesting stuff with the sorrow:

I got the patriot with unlimited ammo from finishing the first time (I'm guessing this is standard since I had a crap rating anyway) and I've been shooting a lot of guys in the balls inadvertantly (I usually just crouch and shoot with the patriot if I'm stuck in a shootout).

All of the guys you shot in the balls will walk down the river holding their crotch saying stuff like "I'm worthless now" and "how would you like it?!?!" with blood spurting out of their crotch.

I was looking at some of my stuff in the photo album and noticed what looked like a weird head floating around during a picture from the sorrow fight. I took a few more during the fight this time and there's definately heads being added into the photo album captures.

My guess is that's it's people from the development team. I remember there was something roughly similar to this in either MGS or MGS2 where some type of easter egg where the developers appeared as "Ghosts" so this must be the latest installment of it.

I'm also guessing the sorrow battle reads you memory card directly (kinda like psycho mantis in MGS) to generate the enemies. Are there any other strange things that can occure based on what you did in the game up until then?

I left the transmitter in after the torture sequence after reading about it here, and it was pretty damn funny.

The amount of thought that went into the hidden secrets and easter eggs is psychotic. It makes playing through the game a second time as fun as the first run.

well, dunno if this new or not, but
in one of my meetings with the Sorrow there where guys I'd killed in the mountains area who had vulture ghosts hitting their heads. And yes, I killed both the guards at the mountains and the vultures the came to eat the corpses.

Thanks Robo, but I want to try the "Jason Bourne" moves this poster is talking about.

Do you have to move the direction of the analogue wherever the enemy is facing? Like if he's facing left and move the stick to left and press O?

After you have CQC-graddeb the enemy (don't push CIRCLE too hard or you'll kill him) just point the analogue stick in whatever direction you want (doesn't matter the direction the enemy is facing) and release-and-tap-again the CIRCLE button.

Just finished it. 34:59, beat THAT.

A few questions:

How do you get the camo of each boss? I've only gotten The Sorrow's.

Is there a better way to take down Volgin and The Boss? With volgin I just threw him to the ground and scorpioned him in the back and he was gone, and the boss I just kept sniping from far away because cqc did nothing.

Also, where was that rambo machine gun?

And lastly does Raikov have any real significance in the story? I'm guessing kojima just threw him in as a look-alike to screw with people.

Tranq the bosses for camos.

As for Raikov, he's Volgin's lover in the game.
