Sounds like a creepy neighbour, man.

We were kids. I was 10, he was 12. I played road hockey every day for 3 hours after school with other kids from around the neighbourhood. Those were good times. He really liked the Pens, got me watching hockey, and I fell into fanhood that way.

Haha!!! So you are no different than the legions of Pens "fans" that came aboard with Crosby!!!

You fold man...

:lol :lol :lol

Please state for me how to initially become a "legit" fan. I didn't know anything about hockey until I was 10 and thought Lemieux was a really talented player. Call it "jumping on," but how else does a kid who's never been exposed to hockey get into it?

Richard peddie told the Toronto star he's planning on stepping down in 2-3 years and that Brian Burke is very safe in his job :p

LOL? What? When was this? I'm not from Pittsburgh, and you knew that a while ago, but the Pens have been my favourite team since I started watching hockey in March 1991. My neighbour got me into the Pens and Lemieux. Just so happened the Pens went on to win the Cup in the first two seasons I was a fan. My first taste of defeat was 1993 and David Volek.

Here is a Manics gem from the offseason thread...

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17764329&postcount=5016

"Love how the mainstream press still doesn't believe in the Leafs this season. They acknowledge the beefed up D but still ask "who's gonna score goals???" even though the Leafs have proven time and again they could score. Their problem last season wasn't scoring, it was keeping the puck out. Now that Double-B has addressed that issue, Leafs are going to be the "cinderella team" this season -- at least to everyone who hasn't yet realized just how good this squad truly is. Next season nobody will be surprised and it'll be expected that the Leafs are a top team in the east.

1. Healthy Toskala = more wins
2. Monster as backup = more wins
3. Beefed up D = more wins
4. Frosh players = more speed and scoring
5. Kessel = legitimate star

Manics is happy, and all the Leaf haters are in for a LONG season. You're not afraid now, but you will be. You will be."

I realize that he's basically a caricature, but c'mon.

Man I am VERY good. That post is dead on. Toskala hasn't been healthy, nor has Monster so that explains our early season troubles. Point 3 is starting to show it's worth, Beauchemin and Komisarek were excellent last night and proved my point. The "frosh" players in point 4 haven't been given the chance yet as they're still on the Marlies and Kessel is proving to be a star.

Also, in my post I said NEXT SEASON the Leafs will be contenders in the East. We have all summer to make moves and Double-B will do that.

Thank you for bringing up this post and proving how well I know my hockey. Thank you seriously.

You also mentioned that they would be the "cinderella team" this year. That would suggest that they would surprise everyone by doing something like, you know, making the playoffs when no one thought they would.

Toskala was healthy to start the season and the Leafs blew. The Monster was healthy and they still lost games. Your D has the third worst goals against in the entire league. The only point that actually stands is that Kessel has been good for you guys and that maybe you'll be a faster team when/if you call up your young guys.

Also, I know you said they will be a "top team" in the East next season. I look forward to bringing this up again when the Leafs are yet again struggling for 9th.

Calling Alucard a bandwagon fan is fucking dumb. He's obviously a huge life long Pens fan. This Manics/Forza act is ridiculously stupid now.

Who you calling an act man? My positive Leafs posts are far less irritating then Alucard's in-game 15 photoshops per post habit.

The guy ran and jumped on the bandwagon of the best team at the time with Mario and Jagr. That is a total joke. I bet you he probably lives closer to Toronto or Montreal yet "conveniently" became a Pens fans to say he supported a winner. :lol

Dude, there were 6 teams with better records than the Pens in 1991. I barely even knew what the standings were or meant at that age.

And yeah, I grew up around Toronto (Hamilton), but I don't understand what that has to do with anything. "Why don't you like the Leafs? You're close to Toronto!" Dumb argument.

Your posts usually provide a few minutes of comedy but you and Forza's back and forth is painful to read.

Passed out on the couch last night after getting back from the Sharks game and forgot to check in here lol. I was really happy to see Michalek score and Cheechoo got a couple good chances as well. If you couldn't hear from the tv broadcast, the fans cheered both players whenever they touched the puck and when Milan scored. Classy of all fans and kudos them all.

It was a real exciting game to be at at times. What was weird is that it was so quiet in there at other times. Ah well. I was hoping Cheech and Milan would have success in a loss and it came true. Sharks top line just keeps on dominating, and are getting support from the lower lines. Both Mitchell and Setoguchi seem to be getting their legs under 'em more and more. Pretty soon this team will have even more speed than they currently do which makes me giddy.

You chose wisely at 10. I decided to like the Redskins
and the Red Wings
. I was also a Charlotte Hornets fan. But I don't have to stick by that since they've moved.

But you made a fine hockey choice, I think I started to get into hockey around 10 also. My dad introduced me and I started playing hockey all throughout school. That was around the same time I got introduced to the Wings as they were the team from our state.

You guys are all just bandwagon fans because you weren't fans of the teams the second it was possible for you to be.

Sarcasm aside, I think we kind of were--I mean, before I was 9 or 10, I didn't really watch pro sports or understand allegiances anyway.

The only reason I became a redskin fan was because my dad was a Bills fan and I wanted to root against him (for fun) in the Super Bowl. I've just stuck with them forever.

The Wings were because a friend of mine and I used to play NHL 94 all day long in junior high and he would always pick the blackhawks and the only team I could compete as was Detroit--prior to this, I had zero knowledge of hockey, since I grew up in central california. So that started me as a fan--but my grandma passed away in 1998, and the last memories I have with her are watching the Stanley Cup finals (she died later that summer) and that cemented my loyalties.

I can't explain the Hornets though. What a stupid decision.

But then how does anyone get into a team? Everyone is a bandwagon fan by that logic since at some point in your life you were introduced to pro sports and you become a fan of a team.

I agree--I don't think there's anything wrong with being a bandwagon fan--who gets into a team because of how mediocre they are? I think the only thing that should "matter" is whether you stick to your loyalty, even when your team becomes shit for a few seasons
or 40+ seasons, sorry leafs
.

There is no need to step up any game. Alucard's story is so full of holes. If he played three hours of ball hockey every day, how the fuck could he not be into hockey? Why the fuck would it take a pedo neighbour to get you into Mario and the Pens when surely he must have been following a neighbouring team like I don't know...the Leafs?!

I was a Sens fan from the day we got a team here in Ottawa. I bought tickets and went to games when we were by far the worst team in the league.

Quite a bit of fairweather fans in Ottawa though.

I got into sports like many, I think, by becoming a fan of the team in my city as a child. They've been there as long as I can remember. In many ways, the organization is a part of my family. My parents, grandmothers, aunts, uncles and pro sports have always been there. And like my family, my love for my teams is unconditional.

I guess you could switch allegiances at some point, or begin by liking another team for other reasons, but for me at least it was who and what I was exposed to as a child.

What a clusterfuck. With that said, I've decided to reinstate myself as a habs fan. Call it battered wife syndrome, but I was a habs since I started following hockey and will be one until bettman finally destroys the league. I know this will be a big blow to the kings organization but it is what it is, sry

Now I guess I'll need to make some sort of girl-age/incest/circumcision thread to get rid of my tag.

Forza is 100% correct about fans and bandwagon jumpers. It would be like someone in Toronto who claims to be a Leafs fan but now ballwashes Ovechkin cause he's the best player in the league. Suddenly this Leafs fan has always had a "2nd team" of the Caps and will switch allegiances totally when the Caps win the Cup. Sad really.

Not cool Manics. You above anyone else knows I've been a fan of both teams since 1982.

P.S. Did you give my cell # to someone else? I got a text from a 999-9999 # saying:

"Fuck you asshole. Sharks and Pens in the Finals!"

I'm the only one in my family that watches hockey. I only became a fan because I saw on tv one day they were talking about a player who had the same name as me. They were talking about Dave Keon, I saw this in the late 80s. I thought he was still playing so I continually watched Leafs game waiting to see him, next thing I knew I became a fan and this was just before Gilmour and the Leafs were no called out of the Stanley Cup finals against the Kings.

Christ. Parise hasn't been on the ice for a goal, in any situation, since November 4th. Given the minutes he plays, that's absolutely insane.

Duncan Keith signed for 13 years?

Kane and Toews as well for 5 years each.

5 years, $6.3mil cap hit for Toews and Kane
13 years, $5.5mil cap hit for Keith

That's how I became a Blackhawks fan. My uncle was a huge North Stars fan when I was really young. He hated the 'Hawks, so I'd always talk about loving the 'Hawks just to get under his skin. Then I got a Blackhawks shirt as a gift when I was 8 and it stuck. :lol

'Hawks are going to have to deal someone soon due to the NHL's goofy tagging rules.

One of the hiccups was said to be the Hawks' lack of tagging room, which would have put them over next season's salary cap if the deals has been announced. Bowman has been manipulating the payroll all season and cleared more room when the team waived Andrew Ebbett on Nov. 21. Since that time, the Hawks have carried just one extra player on their roster (defenseman Jordan Hendry) and apparently now have the required room to announce the deals.
Appears I spoke too soon....

That can't be right.. or did you mean to say goal against, in which case that's very impressive. Although New Jersey as a whole haven't let in many goals this year..

Clearly goals against, considering Parise is on a 10 game point streak :lol
