No kidding. The Leafs as of late seem to be grabbing the goalies a bit after their prime. I never really liked Cujo, and while I think Eddie is good I doubt he'll help the Leafs win a cup.

Have any of you guys watched Leaf games? I mean seriously.

His last 2 seasons were 37 wins and 34 wins.

7 and 10 shut outs.

Sure every once in a while he plays a dud game but on average his play is absolutely spectacular

I live in Cincinnati. I haven't seen a Leafs game since they rolled into Columbus. My comments towards Eddie were more towards his health more than anything else. (He has back problems, yes?) I'm still upset that the Hurricanes beat the Leafs in the playoffs all so long ago (I know that was Cujo). That's like some small Euopean team beating a powerhouse like Sweden... oh wait.. SHIT!

eklund says:

Also there is a small chance that JR may stay in Philly..a snag may have been hit in the Phoenix/LA deal..if that is the case look for the Flyers to move other players to get under the cap.

Any rumours on Selanne? I know he has seen his best days but removing the redline and clutching should really help him, as he likes to surf around opponents blueline. :p

Turns out they were both cheap. Sucks losing Forsberg, but the avs have played without him for long enough stretches. I'm trying to find out what the exact status of Vincent Damphousse is though. The avs are still plenty strong at center(although far less dynamic), especially if we have Damphousse. And we're very solid at D. The main problem as I see it is a lack of creativity on offense past our first two lines. I don't see it as a problem unless the NHL actually starts officiating and the high scoring speed stuff actually takes hold. The team looks real solid if they revert back to SOP officiating.

That said, even without the "new" NHL, a lotta changes in Colorado. New coaching, and quite a few new players. D, goaltending, special teams very solid, I just wonder about offensive spark depending on how the lines are assembled.

eklund rumor

Kariya to montreal
Niedermeyer to either anaheim or NJ

edit

According to a source, "The Reason the JR trade is on hold is it may turn into a three-way trade that lands JR back in Phoenix. Or he may stay in LA...They are having trouble matching players up."

Yeah a lotta Avs fans are thinking emotionally rather than with some sort of rationale. It sucks losing Forsberg. I'd rather lose him as opposed to losing Tanguay and Hejduk. Forsberg is the best there is, but he isn't going to be logging major games to match his price-vs 2 guys who will be in the league for awhile.

I'd love to see the Flyers get hosed. They have to get under the cap, and Bobby Clarke should have been tossed years ago, and this Forsberg move just insulates his ass. Now if they can't deal with the cap in under 48hrs...Sweet!

I read the entire day's worth of posts (three pages) and had about seven replies (complete with quotes) set and done.... then I read a little more and began to realize how f'ing intense and entertaining the Northwest is going to be this year (Minny seems content with clinching last place asap).... I just said fuck it. This is too exciting to discuss the little things. I really hope everyone is up to speed and the rules are implemented well because this season should be very interesting.

Shiiiit it's going to be a thrill.

I wonder how the Canucks are going to fill the vacancies remaining. The two defencemen necessary.... they can't BOTH come from the Moose. Trades? Any decent FAs left?

And what's this about the Canucks missing three forwards. I don't even understand that. We've got plenty, no? Or does that just mean at least three have to be re-signed?

Great post Shinobi. I respect Leaf fans like you that can tell it like it is without wearing the "blue and white" googles circa 1967. I often also laugh how these same Leaf fans who were riding Cujo's nads when he was here suddenly started dissing him when he left for the Wings. As if Eddie (whom I like) has done any better since.

Funny enough, that's when my hatred for Leaf fans actually started. :lol It was okay for us to steal Cujo from Edmonton, but him going to Detroit for LESS money was some sort of unpardonable sin? Fuck that noise. I won't even get into stealing Gary Roberts from the one franchise that had the stones to bring him back.

Toronto sports fans can be some bitter, full of shit rubes when they're ready.

what the fuck. the islanders trade peca for york and sign satan. i dont have much more hockey knowledge than a typical casual fan but as far as i know milbury has made the islanders a better team as of now. can someone with more knowledge fill me in on if these are as good of moves as i think they are?

I was listening to Jim Kelley on the Fan 590 yesterday, and apparantely there's some nasty history between Milbury and the Buffalo GM (don't remember his name). I think the Buffalo GM was being groomed to take the Islanders GM job till Mike got hired, then his ass got dumped. Supposedly the Isles were close to getting a trade done for either Satan or another player last season (think it was even announced on a website), when I guess Buffalo scuttled it. So it's possible that Milbury signed up Zhitnik and Satan just to give Buffalo a "fuck you". :lol

Oh yeah, word is that Chicago's looking to go hard for Khabibulin...if they could get him and another big player, I think that would rock. Absolutely hate the ownership of that team, but I've always had a respect for that jersey and the insane fans from the days of Chicago Stadium (can't imagine there was a better place to watch a hockey game).

So what exactly is John Ferguson Jr's "plan" that he keeps talking about. Anyone in Toronto have a clue?

I'm guessing they're gonna wait for everyone else to get theirs, then the Leafs will sign up whatever's left to short term deals (one or two years) for far less then their perceived market value. The long term plan appears to be two and three years down the road. Though again, I'd have jettisoned Belfour and brought in Weeks or someone else if that's indeed the plan.

And yeah, the O'Neill acquisition was damn good...so it isn't like Fergie's had his thumb up his ass. The team just doesn't have enough financial wiggle room to make a big splash. We've seen that coming for three years now, so why people (Leaf fans and TO media in particular) are so fucking surprised about this is beyond me.

WTF...the best hockey Cujo ever played for the Leafs (outside of the Flyers series in '99) was in that series against the Canes. If the Leafs could've scored more then half a goal a game, they would've coasted into the finals. That's why I was so ticked at people who acted like Cujo never did anything for the Leafs in the playoffs, while riding Belfour's jockstrap even though he got outdueled by ROMAN FUCKING CECHMANEK. Seriously, I'd rather be outdueled by fucking Salo then Chech.

For all the shit Cloutier gets, he had a very strong 03/04 season, including the (brief) playoffs. But his reputation precedes him. He was just so bad in every post-season otherwise. So. Bad.

No way, Montreal is done with UFAs. Oh and keep posting pics like that :lol :lol
I know I know, its Eklund but:

Kariya is not going to Montreal as far as I can tell early this morning...Selanne on the other hand...he'll be one to look for today. Koivu really wants him in Montreal. Kariya is down to San Jose, LA or possibly Vancouver. The hold up is that San Jose is also in the Niedermayer sweeps, but probably third in that race..Selanne is possible in LA, San Jose, or Montreal.

Rumor has it that the Sabres have made an offer to Jason Allison, which is only being held up by Jason passing a physical. Supposedly it could be officially announced today or tomorrow.

How credible? No idea, but it's something for Buffalo fans to get excited about and the pissed when he signs somewhere else.

Oh man. No offense but that would be hilarious to see Allison ditch the Leafs and sign with a division rival

The Leafs fans have had him on their roster (with near minimum salary) for about 6 months

Although I'm a Leaf fan, I can appreciate a good photoshop especially when it speaks the truth. Here's one from the Trevor Kidd days:

Hahah Forsberg...well atleast he moved from the team I hate the most to the team that is a close 2nd or 3rd :P I love that the Avs fans are freaking out, the new NHL bitches!!! I would find it ironic if Avs attendance dropped off because they arn't icing one of the best teams in the league, a true test for fans is when your team is terrible and you still sell out games.

ah yes Trevor Kidd. No lead was safe with him in net. We could be up 4 -0 heading into the third and we'd end up winning the game 5-4, or lose by that same amount.

FAN 590 says Niedermayer is gone to the Ducks

4 years@6.64
Ha, he didnt get his 7.8 millions after all. Neither did Pronger, Iginla and Forsberg.

Yet almost everyone else got overpaid (imo), this new NHL is really really weird

Sportsnet is saying 4 @ 6.75, and that his brother Rob was simultaneously resigned at 4 years, 2 million per.

Also, TSN says Martin Lapointe has been signed by the 'Hawks at 3 years, 7.2 million total.

Hey, now poor teams can afford to overpay people!
That sounds so weird. P.S. Thank you Kevin Lowe.

Sabres sign perrenial all-star Teppo Numminen as per reports on WGR radio in Buffalo.

Well, at least we know Darcy Regier is still alive...

S. Niedermayer --> Ducks.
$6.725, 4 years
R. Niedermayer --> Ducks (re-sign).
$2, 4 years

That should be fun to watch - good for them.

Martin Lapointe --> Blackhawks.
$7, 3 years.

The Ducks are approaching the cap (Federov...). Wonder if they will trade anyone..

-edit-
My mistake.
Bruins/Blackhawks...mental slip.

TSN has the Blackhawks as the ones signing Lapointe, not Boston.

I wonder when some of the goalies are going to be signed? Pens are still floating rumors today about one. I don't see how any day can top the one yesterday....

The western conference is really going to be exciting this year, I couldn't even begin to predict finishing order. A lot of the powerhouse teams have lost players while some of the lesser teams have picked up some big names, I really am enjoying this offseason, so far it was worth losing a whole season.

Don't know if any of you guys know him, but I do since the Habs picked him in the Draft 2 years ago, Mark Streit has signed with the Montreal Canadiens. He's a late bloomer and the Habs are now giving him his chance since they need help at the blueline (he's a defenseman). Here's his stats last year in the swiss league:

44 Games 14 goals 29 assists 43 points (Quali)
15 Games 4 goals 11 assists 15 points (playoff)

Some NHL players that played in his league:

Joe Thornton 40 Games / 10 goals / 44 assists / 54 points
Rick Nash 44 Games / 26 goals / 20 assists / 46 points
Dan Briere 36 Games / 17 goals / 29 assists / 46 points
Niko Kapanen 44 Games / 9 goals / 33 assists / 42 points
Niklas Hagman 44 Games / 17 goals / 22 assists / 39 points
Andreas Johansson 40 Games / 12 goals / 26 assists / 38 points

More importantly, here's his stats for the World Hockey Tournament, he was captain for his team and put up some very good points in the tournament:

MARK STREIT SUI 7 games 1 goal 6 assists 7 points +1 4 PIM

I'm more happy about him coming over than Dandeneault.

Swiss league stats mean absolutely nothing... as you can see from comparing Thornton to Niko Kapanen.

Stupid Swiss. I STILL REMEMBER MICHAEL RIESEN YOU BASTARDS.

I know it's just Eklund....but when I saw a possible Lindros to NY rumor, I got all sad inside. Rumors were the Leafs were going to announce multiple players in a conference today, and I was naively hoping they'd do that....they still can, it's not yet 1 pm...Let's go JFG!

He was extremely good in the world cup as well, 7 points in 7 games while playing for the swiss team, he was the scoring leader of his team as a defenseman and was captain also.

Except Streit is 28 years old and was picked in the 9th round :lol :lol :lol

Habs got nothing to lose, everything to gain :D

mms://wm.nhl.na-central.speedera.net/wm.nhl.na-central/comp/world_cup/sep/09_02_04/unitedstates@russia_500K.wmv
At about 2:05.

If he can do that a few times in a Habs uniform this season then I might forgive him.

Heh, well Domi ain't going to Pittsburgh, I guess....because Andre Roy is.

and what the hell is Jaroslav getting 2.25 mil for one season with the hawks?

I'd rather the pens pay 1.6 for two goons combined then possibly something higher for one goon in Domi. Besides Domi is ready to retire.

Stupid rumors of Selanne or Kariya going to Montreal still. The Habs don't even have the cap space anymore for it with all the RFAs they need to take care of ie. Koivu, Theodore, Markov etc..

Ville Nieminen to the Rangers.. according to some Finnish site.

Looks to me like the Flames are doomed to repeat what the Ducks did. :)
