Why is it that the fans of the other 29 teams are allowed to say Forsberg and Kairya landing with them are mere formalities, but a Leaf fan saying the same thing is a dumb fuck? I mean I hate Leaf fans as much as anyone, but let's show a little consistency here.
As for the Leafs, they're fucked this year. Hard to tell if that's intentional or not...I'm not one who thinks letting Joe and Gary skate off to Keenan's Korner is ruining the franchise like those idiot Sun writers Simmons and Strachan (this from the same people who said the Leafs were too damn old a couple years ago...make up your fucking minds), but if the goal is to refresh the roster and inject some much needed youth back into the club, why keep Belfour? Man is 40 years old, has a back that's wonkier then Palmeiro's excuses, and he might've worn the second biggest pads in the league behind Anaheim's Gigeure, which means the new rules should make things really interesting in regards to those two. Should've bought his ass out...he's played well here, but he let both Esche and fucking Cechmanek own his ass (at least Cujo lost to Hasek and twice to Broduer...you know, goalies that are actually GOOD. And shit, he owned the Flyers in '99 too).
It's been amazing hearing Leaf fans talk about all that we're going to miss with the loss of Roberts in the playoffs...half the time he was either missing those games, or playing at half speed. And we didn't even get to the finals with them, so who cares? Think things would improve with the old lineup against the Flyers this season? :lol
Anyway, many people speculate the Leafs will tread water this season (RE: they'll fucking SUCK), and load up on the free agent crop next year as their current contracts expire. Can't say that bothers me. Writing's been on the wall for this team for a while...too much money locked up in too many medicore players. And their inability to sign ANYONE three days in is a testament to that.
BTW, that ridiculous oft-spoken theory/fact that every English Canadian who's ever been born would play with the Leafs for half the money they could make anywhere else has been smashed to atoms like Palmeiro's reputation (yep, two Palmeiro references now...easily the funniest sports story of the year so far). Players will do what players have always done...go where they can make the most money. No different to every other league with a salary cap. The new parameters haven't changed that fact at all. So hopefully that stupid theory gets buried once and for all.
And you gotta feel for Pavel Bure...the new rules would benefit him more then any player who's ever played. Alas, all that clutching and grabbing bullshit of the last ten years probably hastened is seemingly imminent retirement. Stupid league.

Great post Shinobi. I respect Leaf fans like you that can tell it like it is without wearing the "blue and white" googles circa 1967. I often also laugh how these same Leaf fans who were riding Cujo's nads when he was here suddenly started dissing him when he left for the Wings. As if Eddie (whom I like) has done any better since.
what the fuck. the islanders trade peca for york and sign satan. i dont have much more hockey knowledge than a typical casual fan but as far as i know milbury has made the islanders a better team as of now. can someone with more knowledge fill me in on if these are as good of moves as i think they are?

It's probably a good move. The game will be more quick and should benefit guys like Satan (nevermind the fact that York is pretty offensive too) - and I'm sure that Milbury is hoping that Satan (and York) will be able to jumpstart (crappy overpaid) Yashin.
If I were Milbury, though, I'd have bought Yashin out and kept Peca, signed Satan, and put the Yashin money into some other part of the team...
On the other side of it, I think it's a good move by the Oilers. We needed an experienced forward that could play an all-around game. We still need some offensive punch, but even with the 2 trades already done our special teams should be much improved.
Well, the Flyers are officially the scariest team in hockey right now. And, in a move no one anywhere could possibly have forseen, Kevin fucking Lowe is suddenly the most dangerous Oiler around. :lol
So who's left to sign out of the big name UFA's? Palffy, Kariya, Rafalski... as a Flame fan really I was most anxious to see Iggy resigned, a few forwards added (somewhat accomplished... but really it's tough to get excited about Amonte, but clearly they are going to need to sign a few more ) and the rest of the core resigned.
Only things left are to resign Kipper and a few RFAs but that shouldn't be a big deal. If the Flames had been able to add one real quality offensive weapon (keep going back to Satan or Palffy) I'd have been ecstatic, but so far so good.

he got back up and scored a goal, his career got stunted by that Gary Suter cheapshot more than anything
