Official NHL CBA Conclusion thread! HOSANNAH, BITCHES

Btw, games with no commentators > game with commentators. Radio-Canada was on strike a few years ago when they were still showing games and it was much better without any commentators, you could hear everything going on on the ice.

The one thing I welcome about the CBC strike is the likelihood we won't have to listen to Don Cherry... I suppose they could always play "Classic Coaches Corner," though.

I believe half of that sentence!

You know, not that I'm saying it won't happen, but.. you know. Here's how it works. Take any random sentence. I'm going to go to GA's front page and find one. One sec.

Okay;

run it through the LEAF NATION filter, and voila;

God is it tiring to see people say every player dreams of playing for the Leafs. I made this picture during the offseason for the NHL thread on SA's forums, and somehow, I'm pretty sure I'll be using it next offseason too:

:lol :lol :lol

Anyways, its 6 days until season start. So am I the only one going fucking mad with anticipation, or is it a shared feeling?

I'm more excited than I have been about a hockey season in years. It's got a bit to do with the Flames run, but is much more centred around all the changes to the game.

That and all the mystery around how good some of these dramatically different teams are really going to be... and how preseason success will translate into the regular season (looking at Buffalo, the other team I follow -- who by conventional wisdom should suck this year)

God I hope the rules crackdown continues through the entire season and playoffs and doesn't peter out like they have in the past. While it's always nice to have games that aren't perpetually interrupted by penalties, make the players adjust their play, not the refs adjust their calls.

Im getting really excited for hockey as well. I want to puch all those ppl who said they wouldnt come back to the game cause of the strike or the fuckers who got offended by the JR comments. Fuck them all they are not real hockey fans.

Well, I don't know. I think alot of people who said shit like that were just really, really angry. And it was justifiable anger. You can't blame people for the bullshit that transpired over the last 17 months.

The lockouts over. The season's right around the corner, and people are finally excited again.

God that tsn season countdown commercial is starting to really to hit me.

6 days left.

FUCK.

Flames lose Regehr for up to a month

9/29/2005 5:36:19 PM

CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) - The Calgary Flames will have to begin their defense of the Western Conference championship without Robyn Regehr.

The Flames on Thursday announced Regehr suffered a sprained knee in Wednesday's preseason victory over the Edmonton Oilers and will be sidelined up to one month.

The 19th overall pick in the 1998 draft, Regehr suffered the injury in the waning moments of the latest "Battle of Alberta." The loss of Regehr, whose brother Richie was signed by the Flames as a free agent in July 2004, all but assures 2003 first-round pick Dion Phaneuf a spot on Calgary's roster to start the season.

Born in Brazil, the 25-year-old Regehr appeared in all 82 games for the Flames in 2003-04, recording four goals, 14 assists and 74 penalty minutes. A member of Canada's 2004 World Cup of Hockey championship team, he has 12 tallies and 54 points in 363 career games.

Could be worse I suppose, and while Regehr was the rock on D last season I can imagine a guy like Leopold being more valuable as a dman this year with the rule changes and increased PPs. Still sucks for the Flames.

Not too concerned. He'll be back in a month, hopefully. Just means Hamrlik and Leopold eat more minutes and Phaneuf gets more ice time. Messes up his Olympic chances a bit, seeing as it cuts into his time to make a case for himself. Bummer.

I'm entering into a hockey pool with 8 friends, anyone got any good sites that have good advice for solid/sleeper picks?
Look who's gonna be on the power plays this year for their respective teams, that's always a good thing to do before a pool.

One who will be overlooked by most and will rank up a lot of points with his new team is Patrice Brisebois.

Marchment CUT?
Ouch...

Thank God. The fact he was even in camp proves how pathetic the Leafs D is. Give a young guy a chance. Marchment is better off in the beer league he was playing in last year.

Not that it means much, but the Sens totally own3d the preseason.

2000-01: Sens have terrible preseason, finish with 109 points
2001-02: Sens go preseason 7-0, finish with 94 points
2002-03: Sens go preseason 2-5-1, finish with president's trophy

So no, it doesn't mean much.

So I had a yahoo draft today and I clearly slept in and this is the team I ended up with

C M. Lemieux (Pit - C)
C M. Sundin (Tor - C)
LW M. Recchi (Pit - LW)
LW M. Ribeiro (Mon - LW)
RW M. St. Louis (TB - RW)
RW A. Carter (Van - RW)
D K. Johnsson (Phi - D)
D K. Timonen (Nsh - D)
D D. Kalinin (Buf - D)
D J. Niinimaa (NYI - D)
BN S. Gomez (NJ - C)
BN S. McEachern (Bos - RW)
BN F. Modin (TB - LW)
BN O. Tverdovsky (Car - D)

G J. Thibault (Pit - G)
G J. Giguere (Anh - G)

And I dropped Carter for Czerkawski on waivers

My forwards kick ass considering I missed all but the last round of the draft lol

Hossa was traded to New York, what an horrible trade by Gainey. This will come and bite us in the ass. He was one of our best players in the pre-season and had one hell of a chemistry going with Bonk...

Yeah! Let's keep Sundstrom instead, woohoo! :(

By the way, I've decided to go back to Espn NHL 2K5.

2K6 is just a rushed game, period. It started out great, but like a bad relationship, the little things just get to you.

Bob Cole has gone from acceptable to just down right fucking annyoing, in like 2 weeks flat. Bob, I love you in real life, but your a fucking hack in videogames bud. Don't quit your dayjob.

The gameplay is choppy
the player faceoff animation is... stiff.
Players often shoot the puck before it even touches their stick.
Computer AI on hall of famer is a joke.
Fighting same as last year...but worse. Choppy.
On the fly strategies still around from last year, except extremley hard to execute.

Strategies in the pause menu set up incredible stupid, to the point where my brain hurts from just looking at the dam screen.

But the worst culprit by far is navigating threw the menu's. Switching goalies in game IS A FUCKING MISSION, period. Why? who knows.

Anyways, 2k6, I tried to love you, and our little fling was fun while it lasted, but your just not what im looking for in a long term relationship.

Aren't you glad that Latendresse will now have a place on the roster though?

I liked Hossa but if you ask me right now who would have the better season, I'd go with Latendresse in a second.

Koopa, we NEED physical pressense. Mabey not so much now, but come crunch time/playoffs he will be a huge asset.

Hossa has had a good preseason but I mean c'mon its preseason.

-Nope

-Nope

-Let's not rely on an 18 years old for the playoffs

-It's pre-season for Latendresse too

....god im pissed

Am I missing something here?

You guys are acting like we just traded away a superstar.

Hossa was nothing special. Plenty of guys around that can "make up" for the 6 points he generates a season.

I promise you right now that Latendresse will give you hossa's point totals, plus bring strength to the habs. Have you guys seen the highlights from this guy this preseason? He's knocking people down, laying out big hits, planting himself in front of the net, and getting points while he's at it.

He deserves a shot at the big times this year. Even if he turns out to be a dud, he earned the chance to prove himself.

I can't wait till wednesday......Both games in the TSN doubleheader are being broadcast in HD...Hockey is by far the best HD sport, so this'll be a treat. It's a shame more games aren't being broadcast this year in HD :( And yes, Go Leafs.

TSN HD is pretty sweet, watching the CFL game right now...NHL doubleheader opener you say? In moist, tender high-definition? Bring it on!

Gimme a little scouting report on Marcel, Habs fans.

As for Garth Murray, he's likely a career AHL'er or 4th liner. A fiesty player, has a bit of size, supposed good team guy, willing to drop the gloves with anyone, but a near complete lack of offensive talent. Not to say he's a complete slug like a Peter Worrell, he's not a terrible skater, just really no offensive instinct. At all.

Standard answer: because he probably got all his hockey skill from his mom's side of the family.

Actual answer: Hull was a fatass who could shoot a ton as a teenager and he was cut from Team Canada's junior team. Team USA naturally offered him a roster spot (since they had about 1/1000th the depth back then) and he suited up for them to get the experience and so on. By the time he was good enough to maybe make a Canadian squad he'd already played a few times for the US and he felt loyalty to their program. Of course, even if he was willing to 'switch' to play for canada (which he would have been able to do due to IIHF eligibility rules) I seriously doubt Hockey Canada ever would have asked him.

It still happens every now and then, when a Canadian kid with dual citizenship who is on the bubble to play for Canada gets offered a guaranteed spot by USA Hockey because their program just doesn't have the depth usually. Once you start playing for one country (and it is a huge developmental boost to go to the U18's or WJC as a young player no matter who you're playing for) you're pretty much locked in, for a lot of reasons. Adam Deadmarsh was another good example.

I just found out Brett Hull was born in Ontario. How come I never noticed him playing for Team Canada (I'm still new to hockey).

Hull was part of the crowd at WCW Monday Nitro in a taping in Ontario and the wrestlers spilled outside the ring and Hart accidently threw Sid Vicious into Hull and Hull got all mad and turned heel and joined the American team in front of the Barrie Ontario crowd.

Yeah, it was wierd.

Wolf: I want Latendresse to make the team as well but I would of prefered Hossa to play with Bonk and Bulis on the third line over Sundstrom for christs sake. Hossa had very good chemistry with Bonk, both were leading in points together.

Horrible, horrible move. For once Hossa showed that he had worked hard and was ready for the NHL and Gainey turns around and trades him after we've spent years on him, SICK SICK SICK.

Anyhow, Perezhogin needs to go back to the AHL and get accustomed to the north american game again, he has lost it with a year in Europe. Then you have Higgins, Plekanec, Dagenais and Latendresse. Plekanec and Higgins are making the team for sure this year, they're ready. So we're left with Dagenais and Latendresse and Dagenais, as much as I hate him will probably end up on the second line with his girlfriend Ribeiro because he has done very well in pre-season and the fucker can shoot the puck pretty good.

So Latendresse making the team is still up in the air?

If I had to choose Dagenais or Latendresse right now....yeah, I would go with Dagenais, he does click with Ribs and he does have a good shot...

...but fuck there's got to be someone else the habs can send to the minors to bring in Latendresse. He just brings size, toughness and physical play to a team that, atleast on paper, has none.

Im sick and tired of seeing the habs get smoked every year by teams like the flyers, who just murder them with size and grit.

Well who knows now, things might be different now with the new rules, and mabey the speed and skill of the habs will prevail over size and strength, just have to wait and see.

I don't care who you have to kill down there in montreal koop, just make sure latendresse makes the team!

Hossa had to be traded if they didnt want him on the team or else he would of had to be waived, same with Plekanec and Hainsey. But Plekanec will make the team, the guy can play on the PP, PK, 4th line and take 2nd line duties if need be, he's a very good and speedy forward. I don't know what will happen between Hainsey and Streit, that's a management decision.

Hossa is gone only because we just have too many young forwards who are NHL ready and we only have limited spots :(

Awesome answer, Calder, although I could swear Hull has stated in public a few times something to the effect of "Canada didn't want me then". He's certainly had the career success to keep his ego afloat in this particular situation, but cracking the Canadian Olympic Hockey team (of legend, (tm)) as a teen was obviously beyond almost anyone. I mean, damn, Hull has done his work, but I'm fine with Lemieux and Gretzky, thanks. :)

Glad you brought up Deadmarsh; he always struck me as another one of those glaring and odd examples. I guess it was the nature of the game that we had to bleed talent across borders.

Man, it was so weird watching the Canucks / Flames hilights on TV. I didn't see the hilights from the first preseason game they played, and I was listening to the game on the radio so I knew who won and everything, but still, when I saw Iginla score on Auld to make it 3-2, it was like some Vietnam veteran-esque / Pavlovian response where a sense a panic just washed over me, and I just thought, "SHIT, they're only a goal away from tying it now".

This was from watching hilights from a preseason game of which I already knew the outcome to.

I think Canucks / Flames may take over Canucks / Avalanche for Vancouver's best rivalry this year.

New design for goalie jerseys
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?id=138228

To be honest it sounds like a great idea, but Im not going to give a straight opinion until I see more than just one jersey.

edit - Actually hold on a sec, jerseys' would have different patterns and colors then the rest of the team? Doesn't sound so good after all.

4 more days. OMG. And then I can play Pro Line Pool hockey too. You only have to get 15 games right on opening night and you win like half a million! Predict all 15 games correctly and you WIN! IT'S SO EASY!

:(

I don't think the Sens were suffering from the 'random pre-season' effect. They look really fucking outstanding. :O

Spezza and Heatley are going to be a mad combo.

Steve Thomas was not offered a contract by the Leafs.
It's a shame, since he was practically a beggar asking to play for the Leafs. But at the same time, I think it's better for Leafs to allow the younger players to play.
I hope he signs with another team though.

Thoughts?

maybe if the leafs hadn't signed domi to that ridiculous deal they would have room for stumpy. its a shame to see him go, i hope he catches on with another team for one last hurrah.

I'm working on my hockey pool right now. There are 8 people in it, we have to pick 8 forwards, 4 defensemen, and 2 goalies. However we're doing it (NHL) draft style where no one can pick the same players. 1 goal = 2 points, 1 assist = 1 point, win (goalie) = 2 points, shutout = 1 point. So plus minus means nothing, and goal scorers are more valuable than assist getters.

Anyone have any good links when it comes to sleeper picks or just general advice (ie injuries , etc)?

Wings will sign him. Enough of the geezers already...Leafs NEED youth...
