Wow talk about a pay cut these couple of years for Kariya. From $10 mil a year with the Ducks to 1.2 last year with the Avs, and now only getting 2.25? I thought he would be getting more.

I'd say Khabby is a bit overpaid but I suppose he is clearly the best FA goalie available so they had to go a bit over to get him. As bad as the 6.75 mill a year (and damn that seems worse the more I look at it, I take back "a bit" overpaid) is the fact it's a 4 year deal. Too long IMO for a 32 year old goalie, even if he's been a very good #1 goalie and been pretty healthy his career.

So, who's left of the UFA's? Most teams still have a half dozen RFA's to sort out, including a lot of very good players (guys like Havlat, Hossa, Heatley, Zetterberg etc) but the quality UFA list is a bit thin now.

As far as Lowe going to work goes...the Oilers had the best NHL team for the last 1/3 of the 03/04 season, but without Nedved, it's a whole different ballgame. So I thought they'd look for a #1 centre to fill in that blank...but Lowe seems to be doing something totally different.
They still don't have a #1 centre and they are nearly out of money. The rest of the team looks stacked though.
If Hemsky can realize his potential (and it looks like over the past year he is starting to) they may not need anyone else. Just pick up Mess and that's it.
I think a team like Pheonix really needs Cujo...but I don't know if there were any rumours regarding it. If Zetterberg goes to Toronto...I'll be happy for him to be honest. I think if he's on a struggling, dying team like Toronto (heheh j/k) it'll give him a chance to shine.

Just got back from the Jays game.....on the sportscentre promo between innings they recapped the top stories, one of them being Allison signing. The place cheered like crazy :lol Somehow I doubt that would have happened in Buffalo. Say what you will about our fans, but we care about the Leafs.

Boston doesn't need a goalie.....especially not belfour. I think any sane person can rule that out. Detroit would be stupid to trade for him, I think. All of those names are players that would be good as Leafs...there's not much else to say. Eklund is usually full of shit. As far as Belfour being shopped...that's probably true. People say MLSE didn't want to buy belfour out, but he's old and his contract sucks, so it seems logical JFG would want to move him, thus the rumors.

Sure they'd be making a tradeoff in terms of goaltending, but they'd have a couple players that are putting up good numbers and aren't even the great parts of their career.
Maybe JFJ is going to make some stellar moves like this? Who knows. All i know is that if they do this trade, and sign lindros (incentive laced contract like allison) and palffy i'll kiss his shoes. But then again the leafs would still be lacking on D as they almost always do, though to be honest it's the exact same corps they had last year and it was their best season in history... really no complaints.

It does seem logical that Belfour gets traded for players that would add up to around the same dollars that Belfour is getting and then signing CuJo or maybe trading for Thibault?

zetterberg is apparently asking for 2.5 million and datsyuk is asking for 4.5 million
so basically there's no way the leafs would be able to bag both, and the fact datsyuk is asking so much would basically kill any chance the leafs would be able to make any fairly decent deals in the short term. Plus they'd probably have to fork over 2 2nd round picks or something like that. So it seems more likely that if a deal were to take place with detroit, it would either be a straight deal belfour for zetterberg with or without a utility player tacked on.
Now another problem is getting another goaltender. I know I suggested CuJo, and so does many other players but now after looking at salaries there is almost no way he's going to re-sign. He made 8 million last season. Remove the 24% rollback and that leaves 6 million which means the lowest he probably would sign for is roughly $3.5-4 million as the floor. The leafs are most likely looking for a $2-2.5 million dollar goaltender, maximum. That is, if they want to make room to fill in some holes to make a contender.
Right now the leafs have about 7 million headroom under the cap with 5 more players left to sign. Offloading belfour would free up 4.6 million, leaving 11.6 million with 6 players. Say they grab zetterberg that would bring them down to roughly 9 million for 5 players again. They are also apparently trying to shop klee too, moving him might free up some very good signing room (roughly 2 million)
They bag Lindros for $1.5 + bonuses and another major signing (palffy if possible? or if not a good defensive defenceman)for $2 million. that brings it down for 5.5 million for 3 players. I would probably think they would opt to try to sign mogilny for 2 million and then get contracts out to a couple of the marlies players leaving about 2 million for a goaltender (blech!)
The options are a little limited as you can see, but with a little work and a little thought and hopefully a little good graces from great hockey loving players ( :> ) the leafs can really turn around the club to looking like the worst in the east to one of the best in the east.

Seriously Dopey, why the hell would Detroit trade two young players for a goalie that will be 41 come playoff time? Unless the Leafs throw in prospects that are worth it(do they even exist?) or meaningful players in return(which would hurt their already thin roster) then your scenario is just a dream.
With captain Mats Sundin anchoring the first line and the burly 6-3, 215-pound Allison now centring the second unit, Ferguson believes the Leafs have just inched a little higher up the projected Eastern Conference standings.
"There is great upside here with this punch," he said. "It's almost a 1-and-1a than a 1-2 punch. These guys are going to present some matchup problems for our opponents, and that is part of our plan."
And the GM hinted that the team isn't done yet. There are still negotiations taking place with another hulking centre with an injury history.

I wish people would stop posting Eklund rumors. You DO know that on those blog sites you can change the date and time of your posts right? So if he wanted he could go and post "A very good source is telling me Kariya will sign in Nashville -- this will be announced shortly" and then date it from 2 days ago when in actual fact he posted if after he heard he was signed on the news. I tested this out with the blogspot account and sure enough, you can change your date and time after making an entry.

Personally I don't know why anyone would trade for Belfour when Cujo's available on the open market for a cheaper price. I suppose if a team feels they don't have a chance to get him, Eddie's one of the better alternatives available. But they gotta be sure they're going to contend for the cup in the next year or two. Meanwhile I'd assume the Leafs would sign Kevin Weeks to a relatively low deal as his replacement (Cujo I think will be too expensive, though he doesn't object to a return to TO). But I don't think it's gonna get to that...just don't see Ed getting dealt at all, unless it's for a 7th round pick in like 2012. Even then, it'd have to be a deal to a western conference team.
Though now that I think about it, I can think of one team that could use Eddie's services...
