From Spector's:

According to CKNW980am Radio out of Vancouver the Canucks are in talks with the Pittsburgh Penguins, to seal a deal that would send LW Matt Cooke to the Penguins for RW Michel Ouellet. This would free up $1 million in cap space for the Canucks and would bring some more grit and leadership to the Penguins.

If this is really on the table, I'd hope that the Penguins jump on it. Ouellet sucks.

16G and 16A in your rookie year is suck? HA HA You suckers can have Cooke! What a deal.

Canucks are also apparently in talks with Dumont. Trade away Cookes phat contract = Space for Dumont. I'd love to have him on this team, he can easily replace Carter.

Ouellet scored something like 10 goals in his first 10 games and then did nothing for the next three months. He's one dimensional - he's got a good shot and is good around the net. But he's a poor skater. Don't be fooled by the overall numbers. Once his game was figured out, he wasn't able to knock in easy passes across the crease and he was worthless.

One of the reasons the Pens will be better this year is they won't be wasting ice time on worthless players like Ouellet, Surovy, Endicott, Rita, etc. Maybe Ouellet can do what Carter did with the Sedins, but he's not very good. Way too one dimensional and streaky. He's especially a zero on even strength. At best, he's a decent power play specialist.

Man, what a boring off season(although this Malkin ordeal is filling in the void pretty good) hopefully thing start rolling as the pre-season is "kind of" near.

I'll pick up 2K7 when I get a 360 later this year. But gods army couldn't force me to waste money on the rehash that is EA's yearly cash grab.

Honestly, if EA can come close enough to respectable gameplay, then for the first time in 4 years I'll switch back to EA. They have the presentation down soild, the navigation looks slick and personally Clement and Thorne do an amazing job doing play by play. The goalies look great and seem to have really amazing save motions.

All this sucker needs is some decent gameplay and I'll bite. 2k hockey has given me plenty of memories over the last 4 years, but the glitches seem to get worse and worse every year, the presentation and graphics are piss poor and the gameplay went down when comparing 2k5 to 2k6. The glory years of 2k hockey are over.

1. J. Thornton

I'll let Thornton go, but anyone who picks Kipper over Ovechking is nuts, no questions asked.

I'd be all over that deal as well.... Ouellete has no roster spot on this team as it is... He started out okay, but really tailed off the whole rest of the time. Hopefully they will make it

Hell yeah, hockey pool magazines are hitting book stores! Every year (except last :() I spend a stupid amount of money on them, I'll pick up even the dumbest looking ones. Yeah, even the shitty Sporting News one.

The Hockey News Ultimate Pool Guide looks great, and as usual I really like Murray Townsends fantasy rankings and projections. I'd have to struggle to change his top 10 picks more than one or two spots. The oddly named mag from Hockey The Magazine (Pooler's Guide? wtf?) also looks fantastic, great pictures, very bright and glossy layout and the articles and features I've read so far are quite well written. I really like the look of this mag, but a few of their projected team rankings are odd to me. Devils first in the East? Habs contenders? Stars 2nd??? Flames 8th, Oilers 9th and Canucks 10th in the West? Well, the magazine is from Quebec. :lol Pens fans would like the big interview with Crosby, maybe wouldn't like the predicted dead last finish in the East.

I think the Habs will be pretty good this year. Speed > size in the new NHL (ahem, Bobby Clarke).

Like last year, I suspect all the teams that the "experts" are picking to make the Finals will be long gone when the time actually comes.

As a point of reference I don't recall any of the experts or media picking even one of the four teams that ended up in the WCF/ECF (Buffalo, Carolina, Edmonton, Anaheim) ... in fact I don't think anyone even picked any four of those teams to make the playoffs.

I think the only team they didn't pick was Edmonton, really. Another surprise was the Sharks to be able to turn it around big time.

This offseason seemed very uneventful for a lot of teams. I'm really intruiged by Edmonton's moves...as they've geared themselves to be a highly offensive team. It's as if Lowe thought, 'Ok, we saw how the new rules played out, let's build a team around this", after he was forced to deal out Pronger, and not surprisingly had to let some short term guys go. Picking up Reasoner and letting go of Laraque...it's just interesting to see how things will turn out. Same with Vancouver...it'll be interesting how that whole division fares.

People picked Buffalo and Carolina in the ECF prior to the season last year?

From what I remember, pretty much everyone pegged both those teams to miss the playoffs outright.

The Sharks were actually always expected to do well last season even prior to the Thornton trade (they were in the WCF the previous playoffs after all). Their dismal play early on in the season was actually a surprise to a lot of experts.

But all the experts predicted Montreal to go nowhere and they were correct in that assessment.

If he's so good, the Pens wouldn't be looking to trade him.

Ouellete only can function as a right handed, garbage goal tripod that can only score 2 feet from the crease. That is where he got all his goals at. He can't backcheck or do anything else worth while.... Hence why I wouldn't be too sad if they traded him.

Leafs problem last season was the lack of key veteran leadership, I'm talking Steve Thomas aka Stumpy. Stumpy should have made the team out of training camp and the Leafs would have had a totally different season. He could have shown the young guys like Stajan, Wellwood, Antropov and Ponikravosky what it takes to be a top notch player in the league. Stumpy has got the wheels to still be a great player in this league and the Leafs should bring him back this season. I see at least a 20-goal campaign left in him, and the potential for him to bring guys like Antropov and Poni into the 30 and 40 goal scoring club.

With the new coach Maurice there, he'll know how to utilize these guys, and elevate Stumpy to a key role on the team. Veteran leadership, key goals and a positive attitude, everything the Leafs could use!

BorkBork

The Legend of BorkBork: BorkBorkity Borking
From TSN:
Forward Anson Carter insists he will not be a "bargain buy," and also intends on playing the waiting game until a team surfaces willing to pay at least $2.5 million per year for at least two years.

The only problem is that most teams are done their offseason transactions. They've established their budgets and have spent their money. But for a 33-goal scorer, someone will surely find the room.

Any takers?

Q : When will you sign with Senators ? And what about contract details ?
A : When I'll arrive to Canada I'll sign for maximum rookie contract. If i can't make the team I'll return to Metallurg

Alexei Kaigorodov (Ottawa Senators) on his way to North America
Alexei Kaigorodov (Ottawa Senators) will be in Ottawa’s lineup this season. The young forward has agreed with his Russian team to allow him to sign an NHL deal without annulling his Russian contract, which will remain on pause during his NHL career with HC Metallurg retaining his rights outside the NHL. The young forward’s contract will be for two years and will be a one way deal without an opportunity to send him to the minors. If the young forward is sent down, he will have an option to return to Russia and continue playing for his Super League club HC Metallurg.

:lol :lol :lol thats just what the leafs need!

You'd think Ovechkin would feel the weight, the pressure of being picked as one of the saviors to his sport in desperate need of saving. "I don't feel pressure," he responds. "That's why I was successful.

EA better give him an overall rating of 100.....

for the record, I'm not going to just pick all pens players this year... I'm humble enough to admit I learned my lesson really good last year.

League should be fun....

Hamhuis to Edmonton
Reports coming from Nashville are indicating GM David Poile is having trouble signing RFA Dan Hamhuis. Lowe in Edmonton is actively seeking a top defenseman, and talks have gone on between the two teams. My sources tell me that this is close to happening, around 63%

I hope this doesn't work out, I like Hamhuis a lot and him leaving would totally ruin my hockey avatar :(

About Dumont, I don't see Poile shelling out 3 million for him; or whatever the arbitor awarded.

Yeah, I didn't really see Dumont goin there either...though I'd imagine his asking price is closer to 2 than 3 mil right now.

This Dumont deal is really sounding like it's done. Hot damn.

Preds 82-0.

J.P. Dumont will be skating for the Nashville Predators this coming season.

Sources tell TSN that Dumont has agreed to a two-year contract worth $4.5 million. He will be paid $2 million the first year and $2.5 in the second.

The 28-year-old forward became an unrestricted free agent in early August when the Buffalo Sabres walked away from an arbitration ruling awarding him a one-year $2.9 million contract.

The Montreal native scored 20 goals and added 20 assists over 54 games with Buffalo last season. He has 121 goals and 256 points in 434 games over his career with Chicago and Buffalo.

The official announcement is expected this afternoon.

Done deal! Awesome :)

According to a good source, "He contacted the Preds 3 days ago and said that he wanted to play and move his family to Nashville. He also gave the Preds a very good price and added that he would sign for more elsewhere if they didn't want him. This all came together very quickly. He even knew what line he wanted to play on I heard."

What this says is that more and more hockey players are realizing that Nashville is a great organization, and an outstanding place to live. When I spent time there I was amazed at how much players LOVE to play there. They love the environment, the fans, and the while scene surrounding the arena. Where else can you step out the door of the arena and walk into a dozen bars with beautiful woman and live country music playing...

Dumont had several big-named. traditional hockey markets after him, and yet he chose Nashville for the quality of the organization and the quality of life.

This is a big win for hockey in the southern US.

lovely writeup from eklund.
