Unless half the team dies in a horrible accident they wouldn't finish low enough to get anything amazing in the draft. Picking a player in the first round isn't going to guarantee a superstar. Just look at Alex Steen and Carlo for proof of that.
more draft picks = bigger chance of finding something amazing

a top 10 pick isn't a guaranteed superstar, a 1st rounder definitely isn't. but having many draft picks increases your chances of finding one. if you're planning on staying good for a long time, the draft is very important.

don't know if i mentioned this, but Sergei Shirokov- the Russian rookie who played with the Sedins yesterday and has 4 points in 2 games... anyone remember how the Canucks got him?

Drafted with the sixth round pick the Canucks acquired from Florida in the Luongo trade. The Canucks essentially got Luongo, Shane O'Brien and Sergei Shirokov for Todd Bertuzzi, Alex Auld and Bryan Allen. Mike Keenan just keeps on givin'!

It was available online to stream just fine. The Canucks website wouldn't work for me because of location, but I found an alternate.

Yeah, I watched some of it through the stream, but my connection here sucks, so it wasn't exactly the best experience.

On another note, I just found out that I have Center Ice at the new place I moved into (free Sattelite TV), so that means a hell of a lot more hockey for me this year!

lol someone already bought a Kessel Leafs jersey.

He's probably had it since Kaberle was supposedly traded to Boston. Leafs fans are exciteable... just not very smart.

just so the lazy understand why you posted that link:

"He played two full seasons, and one game in the 1989–90 season, with the Devils before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the pick that would turn out to be Scott Niedermayer."

Toronto/Philly games are going to be fun to watch down the stretch :) seriously - that wasn't even a big hit against ponikarovsky and it still caused a massive fight

Oh Mike, you know I love you but the Leafs getting a 27 year old average D man is hardly the same as getting a 21 year old coming off a 36 goal season.*

*if the Leafs finish bottom five this season you may have my ass for some sweet pounding

What do points matter in the pre-season?

nothing really matters except determining how your prospects are doing and getting the rest of the team into game shape

the thing is he got 36 goals with Savard and Kreji as his center

he'll be playing for the leafs coming off a major injury with freaking... i don't know, i can't even think of a center on the Leafs

wallin, grabovski, mitchell or stajan

out of all of those i'd probably prefer mitchell - but either way they AREN'T good at setting up the play - Kadri will be his setup man next year for sure

kessel doesn't really depend on setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqXSQz6FI5s

though there were a few notable setups - it looks like kessel was really inflating the others players points, not the other way around.

Bozak is also a centre who could find himself on the Leafs full-time at some point in the season (if not at the start). I think Burke said he expects Mitchell or Stajan to play with Kessel, but I'm sure it'll be like last year where we'll see a lot of line shuffling.

It was good seeing the Sens light up the Habs tonight, hopefully it's a precursor of what's to come in the season ;)

Oh God, that fucking trade, I remember Quebec fucking had to send us players at the deadline in 91 so we wouldn't end up finishing last giving NJ the #1 pick who happened to be Eric Lindros.

damn, fighting is definitely going to be banned within the next few seasons. That is scary.
that'd be a good idea, but i think the nhl is too afraid of upsetting the few mouth-breathing retards that would actually watch the sport less if it was removed

Jesus did he ever hit his head hard...

How about instead of banning fights, they just make the ice softer?

This is a shame, but I'd hate to see them remove fights. It's such an underrated element of the game.
