Bouwmeester seems like such an odd move by Sutter.

On one hand - you've got a sick top 3 defense in Phaneuf, Bouwmeester and Regehr.

But if the Flames sign him, they are completely handicapped from the top six forwards down and you're forced to ice 6 guys under $1.5 million into those spots and hope for the best.

This just seems fucking ridiculous but it's Sutter so I'm sure it somehow makes plenty of sense since the prospect pool isn't very deep to begin with.

btw, Sutter who is known for liking good canadian boys in the draft has started drafting swedish, weird.

Probably has a lot to do with the Flames making average to below-average picks in the draft these past couple of years. I think Sutter wants to shake the organization up a bit.

Canada led the way with 102 selections, followed by 55 Americans. The Year of the Swede culminated with 24 players from Sweden selected, followed by 10 Finns, a paltry seven Russians

Kinda puts the things in perspective, this was the best draft year for sweden ever and yet Canada had 4 times more draft picks.

Thats how dominating Canada are.

Canada's population: 33,696,000
Sweden: 9,263,872

So yeah, obviously Canada is the home of hockey, but it's still pretty fantastic that there was so many Swedes drafted this year. Especially compared to the other european countries.

LttP but best wishes to Yoko and thanks for all the memories.

Also welcome back Mr. 4 Goals in 1 Playoff Game.

I still can't believe that the Flyer's consented to that Pronger trade, it was bending over for a rape. 2 #1 draft picks, their #1 draft pick from last year, and Lupul as a throw in. On top of that now the Flyers have to give him an extension and probably nuke their whole cap situation. I guess Philly's owner can't stand being in the shadow of Pittsburgh again and panicked.

Completely handicapped seems a tad hyperbolic. They may not be 4th in the west in goals for again, but they have the people in place to stay near the top I think.

And Calgary's prospect pool seems plenty deep to me. There are no huge super stars (Backlund maybe) but they have a lot of guys that can come up and play in any situation without hurting the team.

While I don't think Bouwmeester will actually sign with the Flames, I think it was great management on Sutter's part to at least give the Flames first crack at the possibility.

"I've never been the type to just chase the money," he said. "I've seen too many guys go for the highest contract and end up in a bad situation and be completely upset for three or four years. I don't want that happening to me. It's no fun going somewhere and losing, especially after you've been spoiled playing here. That would be just miserable."

"We'll see what happens," Scuderi said. "I told Ray in our exit meeting that I'd give Pitt the last shot. I'll take him the offer I'm most comfortable with and say, 'How close can we get?'

Shots fired at Ryan Malone?

That's exactly why they drafted him. Tsn interviewed Gainey right after the pick and asked if it was a "gift to the fans" taking a montreal born player. Gainey said he's aware of the tradition and knew what it would mean to the fanbase. Mission accomplished, crowd happy, Habs get a guy with a French name. Who cares if he can play. Lol

Let's see his rankings...

* ISS: 12
* CSB: 13-NA
* TSN: 22
* THN: 29

So, Montreal was drafting 18th, and the guy is a local? Yeah, doesn't make sense at all to pick this guy.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Latest Red Wings news:

Ken Holland "Not optimistic" Marian Hossa will be re-signed (rumors that Minnesota is in the running to land Hossa)

Tyler Conklin will NOT be offered a contract, so he will be a free agent.

Decision whether or not to give Samuelsson a contract coming in a day or two (I hope this one does not happen).

Kopecky to test the free agent waters.

Why don't you want Samuelsson back?

Also, I'd like to see Hossa back, but if he isn't willing to take less than five a year, which seems to be what's happening, then fuck him. Let him crack in the play-offs somewhere else.

Boston or Washington need to lock this UP. Guaranteed Finals appearance.

He's a defensive liability, he's lazy on the ice, he disappears in the clutch, and he was terrible in the playoffs this year.

He's a great value. $1.2M and 40 points mainly on the 3rd line. And I don't think he's a huge defensive liability. Also, he's not the kind of guy that you should expect to step up with clutch goals (though he had a few big ones in last year's final). "Lazy on the ice" is subjective and I disagree, but I do agree he didn't have a great playoffs (but he pretty much did his job which is all you can ask).

He's expendable if you want to keep Hossa, but he's been great for the Wings and he's probably someone you won't miss until he's gone.

haven't posted on the thread in a while, but I want to say I'm very happy about the Pronger trade.

Lupul = liability. "Sniper" that goes on massive cold streaks, and also was way overpaid at 4.25 million.
Sbisa = unkown. Hate losing him more than I do Lups, but it's hard to gauge where he'll end up.
Draft picks = lottery tickets. Flyers already have loads of young talent anyways.

Pronger is older, but still inarguably a top Dman imo. So now we've got Timonen, Coburn, and Pronger on D...and this is a good thing.

Unfortunately Emery is in net, so in the end none of this will probably matter. I miss Biron already and he's not even gone.

Things happen for a reason... I hated losing Malone, but had we signed him for 3.5-4 mill, that is Jordan Staal's contract right there... Or basically us losing Whitney for a salary dump last year

That is great what Scuderi is saying... If he really wants to stay, but will do so for under 3 mil, that is awesome news. If Shero can sign Guerin, Scuds (multi- year) for less then 5 that is a great job.

The rest can walk and we'll fill the holes with cheaper guys or rooks.

Guerin (2) - Crosby (8.7) - Kunitz (3.75)
xxxx - Geno(8.7) - Talbot (1.3)
TK (1.4) - Staal (4) - Cooke (1.5)
Dupuis (1.3) - Godard (1) - xxxx

Gonchar (5) - Orpik (3.75)
Scuds (2.5) - Letang (.8)
Gogo (1.8) - Eaton (2)

Fleury (5)
Curry (.6)

That is still really tight, and right at the max.... I'm thinking Fed-Ex goes, Scuderi and Guerin stay and 2 rookies make the pens next year (Curry and someone else). I think Adams or Zigomantis will be resigned for cheap as well for 4th line depth.

Hate to see Fed-ex go as he put in a few clutch goals for us, but thats just the way it has to be... Things are going to get really dicey next year when they have to pay Letang a nice raise (and resign Gonchar)

Trust me Jackass, this Leblanks guy will make Latendstiff look like Mike Bossy by comparison. :lol

hossa is as good as gone. the only way it's feasible is if they move significant salary, and all of the most tradeable assets other than filpulla have NTCs...and filppula is here to stay.

samuelsson is a good player for under 2mil, if they could replace him on the point on PP2.

i'd like to see hudler sign an offer sheet so the wings can take the pick(s). he's got undeniable talent but i'm not a fan.

in response to who you quoted... i havent posted since the Emery signing, but i have to say, i'm quite unhappy about the trade. So to at least make you feel a little better, not all Flyers fans want to see this shit.

They have to find a way to tread water salary wise until they can start reaping the benefits of the new arena next year. I think they'll manage though. I'm hoping the winning atmosphere makes some guys want to stay, or, if not, has outside guys want to come in.

The drafting of Tatar makes me feel fine if Hudler leaves. Like you say, the Wings get one or several draft picks, and Tatar looks similar to Huds but has bigger potential.
I like Hudler but I don't think he'll ever be a Top 6 guy on the Wings, and for a 3rd liner he's going to be expensive next year.

Part of me is really looking forward to seeing Pronger + Richards + 3 other forwards on the PP.

I'm not up to date on Pittsburgh's financial situation--what does this have to do with their salaries? Are they nowhere near maxing out the salary cap? Isn't every team regulated by the same salary cap?

eh, i just think money could be spent elsewhere, they are more then 1 good d-man away from challenging for a cup, and they gave up a shitload to get a good but aging d-man... this is a move you make when you think you are "this" close, and if Holmgren thinks the Flyers are that close, i don't think i want him as the GM anymore.

Plus, god knows what you are going to get out of emery

Yes, but there are those who spend and manage the cap well, like Detroit, and those who don't manage it well and wind up way over, like Philly. And there are teams who don't spend because they can't. Pens are in the top 10 in spending and near the cap. But if they're going to stay with the nucleus they have and continue winning, they're eventually going to need the revenue of that new building.

Well the Pens did themselves a huge favor by winning the cup. Think of all the profits from that merchandise...

This is the last season in the Igloo, the new one will be opened up in a year. They should be fine

Komisarek? A "softie" from Montreal??? What would you guys in Toronto do with that kind of no-good ex-hab?

Same thing they did with all of the "softies" they picked up from Montreal in the 90's - not much. Few things gave me greater joy than getting rid of that nugget Darcy Tucker. That he went to the Leafs was the icing on the cake.

This. I want him gone just so Babcock won't insist on playing him on the powerplay anymore. He can't setup plays, he can't stop the puck from getting out of the zone, and he apparently does not understand the concept of shooting for the tip because whenever someone else gives him the puck he shoots some pathetic corner snipe attempt 15 wide and the puck rolls out of the zone.

He sucks.

Effing sweet.

I hope we can re-sign Zigomanis. We would have 4 incredibly solid centres if we do.

Next step: re-sign Fedex, drop Satan, hope that Scuds won't ask for too much of a raise.

Good to see Guerin and Adams resigned. Really hoping Feds and Scuds stay, but I think both guys are going elsewhere.

I'm really happy about these signings. Not too much risk involved with an older Billy G for 1 year. And I'm really glad they locked up Adams for 2 years really cheap, as that dude was great for us. He is just the type of player we need against tough teams like Philly.

I would like to see Shero see if he can trade off Dupuis this season, as he is too expensive for his role.

I still think Fed - Ex (Unless they can unload Dupuis) is gone, with all attention going toward Scuds to be resigned.

I'm also glad cause Billy G is just going to have more positive influence to unlock the true offensive potential of Jordan Staal as well.

EDIT: I think Geno is going to have a rotating winger next year... But heck, Cooke looked pretty good with him for a little bit, so maybe Talbot - Geno - Cooke and they slot Dupuis on the 3rd line. I think TK gets a top 2 line audition as well.

purg3

I'd rather them keep Cooke/Staal/TK together, that line has some solid chemistry. They get the puck deep and keep it in the offensive zone, and are good at wearing down the other team.
