I'm surprised there haven't been SDTV complaints here. The game is widescreen only, and while playing on a SD set when the main TV is occupied I've noticed some of the text is on the very small side. Is everyone on GAF finally in the HD era?

I have had to squint a bit to read some of the item abilities and the dream sequences. I plan on picking up an HDTV tomorrow, so no more worries for me on that front. :D

I agree it is a bit of a pain though.

Unfortunately I am not. I will not likely be getting an HD tv for some time either. A lot of my 360 games have the text on them too small for me to even read, Blue Dragon being one of my biggest complaints. I only played 30 minutes of LO so far, but the fact that I have to play in SD makes me go :/

Damn, this is a great game. I haven't had this much fun playing an RPG for a while (I loved Mass Effect... but I didn't finish it because I always get lazy). I see myself finishing this one. I'm up to
finding Mack in the crimson forest, but im right up to the under ground area where I think there will be a boss in the room
.

If you don't know whether to buy this game or not, do it... it's fucking awesome.

So I know the Dreams have gotten a lot of praise, but how would you guys rate the actual story/characters out of 10 thus far? Are you really interested in whats going to happen next in the story?

You really must be lying.
I haven't got near tearing up but "Letters from a Weakling" and "A Mother Comes Home" were pretty sad

Can someone explain to me the Guard meter? I see it going up and down, but what does it do exactly?

I still haven't figured it out completely because I don't really use it, but what the guard meter does is it protects whoever is in the back or your formation. So if Jensen is back there, you're going to have Seth and Kaim in front. The meter adds the HP for both characters in the front line, and there's 4 "GC" levels. I don't know what GC stands for, but level 4 keeps the back character completely protected (and any attacks towards them doesn't really affect them), but as your front line gets hit you lose points off your guard meter. As it goes down, your level of protection goes down and that affects how the people in the back line are protected. I don't know how to rebuild the bar, but usually i heal my characters through the menu (out of battle) and the meter gets re-filled.

If you think it's awesome and have the money, you should buy it. It's not like this kind of game comes around too often and it could definitely use the extra sale.

The first time I played the game was on a 19" CRT with standard aspect ratio. It sucked playing it in letterbox mode.

I'm playing it again (New Game+) on my new LCD wide-screen monitor and it looks a ton better than before. I also decided to play the game with English voices on this time, and while a lot of the voices sound better in Japanese in my opinion, Jansen makes it totally worth it. So much of the funny stuff he says in English just isn't carried over at all in his Japanese voice over or in the Japanese subtitles. Some of this stuff is really good.

Attempt four on boss 2. Once again, the turn system in this game is bullshit and completely artificial for the enemies, especially during boss fights. Loved on my last attempt when Seth was about to cast heal, when one of those fucking bugs ran up out of turn and killed her. Amazing. The game's great, but the battle system is broken with shit like this going on.

Actually, it all makes sense. Casting spells takes more time than just attacking. Especially for characters like Seth who are slower at casting spells. So your heal spell takes most of the turn to cast.

This is correct. If you just take a look at the status screen you can see that Seth's casting speed is about twice as slow as Jansen's. Also, if you look at a spell it will have a number and a letter. The letters: S - A - B - C - D - E - F - G - H represent how fast a spell will go off within a certain turn with S being the quickest and H being the slowest and the number next to the letter represents how many turns it will take for the spell to go off. For example, if it is a 2H spell, it means that it will take 2 turns to cast and it will go off extremely late in the 2nd turn. Of course, the casting speed of the caster and certain effects that increase casting speed will affect how fast a spell goes of as well.

Once you figure out the system you can generally predict how the turns will go.

Plus, if you really need to be healed that turn, use an item instead of a heal spell. The items are used before you can get attacked.

Hey, I need a bit of help. This is about eight hours in, in Numara:

I'm in this spirit cave thing in the Crimson Forest looking for the boy. There is a circular stone door that rolled shut and I need to find some way to open this. There doesn't seem to be anything in the vicinity; do I need to defeat all the golems or do I need to backtrack into the swamps?

Glad I'm at same part. :p

There are three boulder tracks, one of which DOESNT lead into that central area with the door. On the one that DOES, push the pillar with the green "light" on it towards the north of your TV set. Once that's done, run back up the top and activate the boulder, it should crash through the door and let you through. Heal up and save though you've got a boss fight coming.

I wasn't, though my eyes were kinda watery that's about it though. It was definitely a sad moment though I would've been even more depressed about it if I had a bit more back story on her. Regardless, this game is very emotional and I am very impressed with how it DOES move me more than others.

Mind you, I'm interested with what Sakaguchi will do when he releases Cry-On, the game where he wants us to be crying every 15 minutes. Lost Odyssey shows me that it will have potential.

NOW FOR THE HELP I NEED.

Disc 2 - Tosca, the mini game where you place Wreaths on the Kelolon. Where is the 16th one? I think it's above that house with two doors, but I have no way to get up there.

Futhermore, what does the status effect of Kelolon do for party members?

Kaim is one of the better characters in recent gaming memory. He starts the game as a silent badass who seems to have problems, but as you progress you slowly discover that, even as an immortal, he's just as vulnerable and human as the rest of the world. It's some seriously great stuff. Kaim is enigmatic but also evokes a real empathy in the player.

Also, my favorite dream story so far is The Returning Hero. It's just so depressingly beautiful.

:(

Just started, still poking around the city. I've seen three dreams at this point and they really add resonance to the game and to Kaim's character.

It's a pretty great way to add some pathos to his journey and some weight to the proceedings.

Haven't really done much else and the story has barely kicked into gear, but it's definitely already a very vivid experience.

I dunno what I was expecting to be let down or something but this game is great!

It's all the BS anime style RPG, leads to kiddie story and game play, on the console that made everything think jrpg sux on X360. As long it had FF adult graphics style and story, I knew all along it would be a success. Mistwalker should just stop doing Blue Dragon 2 and go right to LO 2.

No way. I'm glad he's able to do different kinds of stories.

Anyway, is BD2 confirmed?

I can't stress enough how much I want the "1,000 Years of Dreams" book to come out here in the states.

That being said, is this game still being positioned as a FF type series of games? I'd kill to play a sequel that takes place during another period of Kaim's life.

You got the one behind the waterfall right? Is the one you mentioned blocked by a guy standing in front of a ladder that he claims to be repairing? If so, you need to come at the right time. All of the people who block the various wreaths will move at certain times and it might take a few tries to get them all.

It hasn't been officially announced as far as I am aware, but I am pretty sure that Sakaguchi said he was working on it in an interview somewhere.

Totally. As I said, I'm very early on, but just the small bits of his life we get from the Dreams is enough to want another game's worth of adventures with this dude.

Anyone else think Tolten's face looks like shit? I mean, I don't need all of my RPG characters to be gorgeous or anything, but Tolten is hideous.

Dragon Quest series and Chrono Trigger say hi. Dont be silly. Just because its got Akira Toriyama's character designs doesnt automatically equal "kiddie story and gameplay". Its nice to have a thought provoking JRPG, but sometimes you want something light hearted in your spare time as well.

Well the DS game is a direct follow up, but I guess that'll probably work as an in between game connecting the two. Also the eventual BD2 should have ALOT of environment diversity, especially the way the entire world is left after the events of the game.

Could someone post the BEST video that represents gameplay? Also how long for a completionists? Is this game worth getting a 360 for?

It will take a long time for a completionist. At least 70 hours on your first go to do everything, and a lot more if you want to get max levels for all of your characters. I think the game is worth getting an Xbox 360 for, but that is only assuming that you will eventually purchase other games as well. No single game is worth close to 500 USD to play.

The ring you see is an item that is equipped that gives your attacks some sort of bonus; the closer you are to timing your hit, the more effective that bonus is.

As for your third question: depends on how big of a JRPG fan you are. This is by far the best JRPG released on the current generation of consoles so far, and while it hasn't had much competition, it far outclasses it's next biggest rival, IMO.

As someone who felt that they were growing out of JRPGs, this game rekindles everything I love about the genre because it's done so well.

If any of that is your determining factor in buying a console, then the answer would be yes.

Yesterday finished 1st disc (18 hours more or less)

Jansen made me Lol again with the puberty comment in such an akward moment. Anyway, the boss was nice, a nice touch the way you have to use some spells to avoid problems, and the cutscene after was beautiful also. I found one minigame also, the musical cubes.

In terms of gameplay, apart from the interactive rings/equipment system i´m enjoying the skill link and its posibilities a lot. Do the inmortals become too powerfull later on or do the stats help to keep mortal characters balanced? cos being able to learn not only mortal skills but equipment bonuses is gonna help a lot if there are enough slot seeds to be able to use them at the same time.

Also, last time i played i was disconected from Live and i´m sure loading times were shorter than yesterday. I was thinking it may happen something simmilar to what happened with Oblivion, that eing offline helped with the loading times (even if that doesnt sound logical at all). I´ll play disconected again and check the loading times.

Btw, is there any merchandising apart from the strat. guide. design book or figurines?

Since the immortals are still quite a bit specialized in the first place, they stay balanced with the mortals, especially since you can give an accessory to them to make them use something they are not supposed to. Cooke makes a very decent black magician from time to time :)
