Official North American Lost Odyssey Thread

I never grind in rpgs. I think I'm having so much trouble is because of how Kaim and Seth are set up. They have no magic, and their attacks tend to do just 100 + damage. I haven't updated my weapons yet, however, even though I know I can update them in Numara. Jansen's my only true healer and magic user. This makes battles tricky because Jansen is pretty much my most important party member at this point.

Don't waste your time with Magic on Seth and Kaim. They are typical tanks, attacking and defending, with weak Magic skills, don't worry when your team grows, you'll have less problems, also, IMO, this game doesn't require any grinding at all, just some sort of strategy for tough battles...

Hey, so I was pretty excited to try this game out last night, but as soon as I put the disc in, I'm greeted with a DRE. I'm guessing it's because the first disc fell out of the case as soon as I opened the game. I'm guessing that's because Microsoft still thinks disc-stacking is a good idea. Hey, MS, you remember North America, right? You're biggest territory, and the only place this game really has a half-chance of selling well? Yeah, thanks for dicking us over like that while everyone else gets a non-retarded package.

Honestly, though I'm not sure what's worse: the packaging or the fact that the game's FOUR GOD DAMN DISCS IN THE FIRST PLACE. That should've died with the PSone.

For the early bosses, just have Jansen casts spells that the boss is weak in (flare, aqua). Shouldn't take more than 7 spells before they're dead.

What's the max party size btw?

Yes:
- This game should have been on 1 HD-DVD
- Xbox 360 should have had HD-DVD packed in?
- Should have a quieter optical drive so the disc spinning isn't affecting game enjoyment.

But... the world is not perfect.

Advice: Don't drop the disc.

Solution: Take the disc to the retailer, they will exchange defective discs within the first 2 weeks usually.

Whoever said that they're on disc 3 and only died twice - I refuse to believe you. I'm a genre vet and I've died multiple times already.

I died twice at the first boss, once at the dino boss on disc3, and once on an encounter in the bonus dungeon at the end of the game. Total. No kidding.

About 2 hours in and I have 2 questions.

What do I do with these Seeds that I keep finding?

There is an elevator lift puzzle in the beginning of the Grand Staff level that I ran across. It gives you 6 tries to get the lifts in a certain spot. Can someone just post the sequence?

Thanks - enjoying this game quite a bit.

I'm 20 hours in, I love it so far without a doubt, LO was one of the reasons I got the 360 in 2007, and its totally delivering what I expected and I wanted from the game, however, I have to say, ME's story and story telling is IMO superior to LO, trying to compare anything else however is impossible, while both are RPGs, they couldn't be more different. And I'm saying this, as someone who always preferred jRPGs over wRPGs.

But the conclusion is: both are excellent games, and represent everything I like in western and eastern RPGs.
I think Mass Effect has better mythology, but Lost Odyssey has more personality.

Seeds are given to the pipots-first one is in the Grand Staff Construction area. They give you special weapons and items. Slot Seeds are extremely important, they let your immortals equip more skills-use those as you get them.

The lift sequence is
A,C,B,A,A

You'll find so-called Pipots in some pots at most of the cities. They trade items for the seeds. Sorry, I don't remember that lift puzzle.

The cut-scene after the QTE I mentioned earlier is the first time the game actually made me LOL. Great show.

After you exist the sewer dungeon, the escape in the Nautilus.
I easily did it on my second try. It would have been easy even on first try on a PS2 pad, but I just bought my 360 a bit over 2 months ago so I'm not completely used to the button layout yet.

My problem wasn't really the minigame itself but its setting. You need to use the left analog stick to fine-tune the torch location.

Okay, this is my first turn based RPG since FF VII, and this griffin 1st boss just royally ass raped me. I guess I need to grind a bit to get some more levels to take him on... Any strategies? That Down Burst attack that deals 200 on everyone is just raping me.

Make sure Kaim and Seth have flame rings and that at least one of them has Guard Heal or Stand Ready skills. I just had Kaim and Jansen attack constantly and had Seth Guard every other turn or so to keep the GC level high. I never had to take time away from attacking to heal anyone this way.

Make sure Jansen is in the back of the formation, and that you've linked a few of his skills to Kaim and Seth. Keep healing and casting fire based attacks.

Good question, I'd like to know that as well. (It's on my revisit list)

You can't get everything first visit there, you need additional party members to get past certain parts there.

I caved and bought the game. Hope it doesn't kick my ass around too much. Traded some stuff in and ended up only having to pay about $10 for it, so I guess it's a safe experiment.

I got LO on Wednesday. Played an hour Wednesday night: Not impressed. Played another hour last night: Not impressed... until... I got to the first dream (
Hannah
). The game totally clicks at that moment. Now, playing this game is all I can think of. All of the ponderous JRPG trappings and clichés just sort of fade-away, and you get the game, and it's good. It's really, really good.

The story is great, the skill-link system is fantastic, the ring-combat keeps things engaging, random battles aren't frustrating, and the load-times aren't anywhere near what the reviewers were reporting.

Yes, LO still hasn't evolved as far as game mechanics go, this is still a very traditional JRPG, but, it's the best one I've played in about 10 years and I don't think it's going to leave my 360 until I've gone through the whole story.

Is there anything in the game to keep in mind about missing forever? Blue Dragon had several of those, and I'd like to know since I'm an OCD gamer.

They seem to have gone through quite a lot of effort to avoid that this time. For example, if you ever miss an item in an area that you get locked out of, you'll be able to buy those items at the auction house later. About the only thing I remember is going to the
city of Khent
, which you need to go to before
Gohtza
. I don't think it counts towards the been-to-every-area achievement, though.

Can't believe I'm still waiting for this to come out in the UK. I find it ridiculous Australia gets it almost an entire month before us. We're both PAL territories, we're both English speakers and we're both in the Commonwealth. :(

At least I've got DMC4 to keep me busy in the meantime.

I did the exact same thing and thing it is awesome. This game is very polished and I'm having a blast and I usually don't buy RPGs

Ok so I just barely played past the intro but I had a hard time noticing myself getting exp. Is that because your capped for that begining area already?

Also does the game tell you how much exp is earned from battle? I couldn't see that and also what about SP how is that gained and is there a cap for that as well? Can you see how much you earned of it like the exp (if you can).

From what I can tell, SP is not capped unlike EXP. You can see how much SP you've gained in the post battle report. It will show the SP and Gold gained along with any items you recovered.

Ok thanks. And same with experience? I've seen the bar for it but not where it actually says "earned 234, etc exp."

Experience always goes from 0 to 100, what changes with your level is how much of it you earn. This also means that it's impossible to earn more than one level per battle. (Even if you put a woefully underleveled char in your party)

Ok final question :D So you can grind in one area constantly swapping mortals to learn all their skills before you move on? (with the exception of skills learned by the mortals through leveling up)

No offense but I'm baffled at your statement.

I seems odd when people who don't speak japanese prefer japanese audio. The voice acting could be worse for all you know but you cannot know because you cannot speak it or understand. This appears to be a conundrum. I had a japanese friend who actually thinks japanese game voice acting is terrible. So this has me wondering... Is it fashionable to like japanese dialogue?

Fashionable? Maybe think of every possibility and advantages you can get from having a foreign dialogue rather than jump on the flame bus as soon as you can.

I don't know japanese, this is true, I don't know swedish either, I'll take a foreign voice acting in an RPG over american any day, why? because I have to read the text, I have to read each and every word of it to understand whats going on. With american voice overs, it's mostly poorly picked (I'm sorry, but the terrible voice acting games outweighs the good (notice I didn't say great) by at least 30:1) and the voice normally reads the text twice as fast as the fastest text setting is there, or mostly too slow, it's not very engaging.

Bought the game last night and played up until
the hut in the mountains
and I have to say I love it. I've gotten 3 dreams so far and two of them almost brought a tear to my eye. They're very beautifully written and engaging. You actually start to feel for Kaim and even tho he appears to be an asshole, you actually see that he has a totally different side to him. I love that dynamic. Jairiya-sama err.. I mean.. Jensen is a friggen riot. I love that guy.

I'm barely 2 hours into the game and I'm in love. The ring system for both building and the enhancement ring are top notch and very engaging. The skill link is cool. I immediately got addicted to that and made sure that before I stopped for the night that Kaim and Seth all linked up everything they could with Seth for the level cap of that area.

Nice work Mistwalker. Keep them coming and I'll be a very happy gamer.

Well just specfically looking at doing that for the the achievments that require you to learn every skill. Thats why I asked. Thanks.
Then you should probably just learn skills normally for now, you later gain skills that make it much easier. (eg. 2xSP or equipping 2 items at the same time)

When do you get these items? I've been doing it the long way lol.

I'm enjoying the game so far, it definitely picks up once you get out of the intro areas. I'm generally not a huge video game soundtrack aficionado but the music in this game is utterly fantastic. Even in the first couple of hours it seems to vary quite a bit and it really sets the mood. Good stuff!

Whew, made it to disc 4. Now that the dungeons get quite a bit longer the random encounters are somewhat annoying at times. But overall disc 3 was the best yet IMHO. Interestingly, it also took me the shortest time to complete (around 11 hours, I'm at 35 hours now).

Around the middle of disc 3. And some of the skills actually aren't on items.

I am close to the end of disc 2 (I think...
just went on a little boat trip
)

As I bought some new magic spells and looked at my spell book I did realise that I missed one LV.2 Spirit Magic spell (got
"Powera", "Minda" and "Gamble"
). Is there any chance that later in the game there is a shop that actually offers more than one or two spells and which allows me to complete my spell book? Or can I later go back to places I once visited which should allow me to find the spell?

BTW, just bought
Awakening Bracelet (+3 Skill Slots) from the crow in Saman Village... I pick "This one" and "That one" all over the place and suddenly I got it.
Love this game! :D

Are you guys playing the game in English or Japanese? What's the consensus on the English VA quality? I'm probably gonna get this game at the end of the month and I was wondering what language I should go for

Yeah,
Saman village before you "fix" it is one of the greatest parts of the game IMHO. I didn't know you could get that Bracelet from the Crow though, I only got it much later. Lucky bastard ;)

There is a bit of discussion on this earlier in the thread. Personally I think the majority of the important characters are better in Japanese, however the English version is by no means unplayable. Japanese has the disadvantage that the lipsynch is timed for English and that the subtitles are not direct translations (and sometimes even completely different).

You can always go back for spells. I know exactly where the one you missed is—it's an optional area and you may not have gone there at all yet. There are VERY few spells you can buy in shops later in the game, so don't count on them to fill in your blanks. The missing spell is in
the Numara Atoll (accessible via the Slantnose). The enemies there are unbeatable at your level, but they're all very slow and easy to run away from if you want to get the items there.
