Fuck..... :(

This game is one of the most emotionally evocative games, if not the most, I have ever played. It's truly heartbreaking.

So there you are, in Numara. Sun is out, city is happy and tranquil. Then all of a sudden you get the one-two punch of Letters From a Weakling (which is just torturously sad and beautiful and probably my favorite story so far) and then the whole
Lirum
scenario. God...so depressingly brutal.

Kaim is truly one of the most interesting protagonists gaming has ever seen, in my opinion. Guy can't buy a break ever it seems.

Man... :(

The whole narrative and story so far has been so well done but it sure does make me frown a lot.

After playing Lost Odyssey...FFXIII better deliver. Heh it would be funny if it outdid the game both in all departments.

Also I like how Kaim gradually changes his personality through the game.

I'm sure it's been covered before, but I went back through several pages and couldn't find it. I was hit with several untagged spoilers, so I decided to just ask.

I got the preorder bonus code, and entered it after I was a couple hours into the game. How do I get the weapon? Do I need to start a new game, or is it somewhere in the game world? Is it just something you automatically get when you play, or does it still need to be discovered?

Sarah better not be a damn mage.

Lost Odyssey is pretty much what I wanted from ps2 Final Fantasy's the entire generation (FFX and X-2 aside). It's like the Final Fantasy XI and XII I never got.

About Sarah...
i'm sorry...but on the bright side her stats are better than Ming's. Actually just got to that part myself, but I guess they'll start throwing melee guys and girls sooner or later. I was surprised that Mack wasnt a Black Mage. He seems like a Monk and boy can he hit. That Gamble spell REALLY comes in handy too. I've done like 1000+ damage in one hit with that.
.

And with Ming, just toss that accessory she has on someone else. Bam. Multi target spells for everyone!

I really wish Sakaguchi went with FFX's way of switching party members during battle. That was nice, especially since they are supposed to be travelling together most of the time.

Sorry. I blame the copy editors. :(

Haha, its cool man. At least I found the damn thing lol.

Anyway, just picked up Sarah--ugh more magic users. I'm not a big fan of Mack either, and he kinda sucks as a front line guy I think. I just taught his Combo and heavy hitting skills to Kaim and Seth. Sure Gamble is nice, but I'm also in the process of giving it to my primary casters. I guess I'm going to grind Sarah to replace ming since her stats are a bit better.

Anyone else find that haunted mansion to be a complete pain in the ass. Glad that is over with.

Christ, I've been playing this since 2pm. I haven't been this hooked on a console RPG for a long time.

There is not a single doubt that FFXIII will outdo LO in the graphics and also certainly in the cutscene department. When UE3 agrees with the current level's graphics LO looks great, but when it doesn't it can be quite average looking.
I don't doubt an engine tailor made for the game would have made it look good all the time, and of course FFXIII's budget will certainly be quite a few times bigger than LO's.

Yeah it's my least favorite dungeon so far.

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it
Really enjoying the game, and I'm only 2.5 hours in. I've spent most of my time just running around and having dreams, which are really fantastic. The presentation for the dreams are just so well done. I want a soundtrack for this.

And yeah, I have read 4 dreams and am on my way to this guy's mansion because he's under house arrest. And I feel like I know this protagonist better than just about any RPG I've ever played.

The Little Liar story was so creepy and good. Jay Rubins is godly.

I'm only about an hour into the game and i think i'll dig it

It just took 5 minutes into the intro for me to realize i already like it 10x better than Blue Dragon. Blue Dragon had no heart, no OOMPH.

And Shane (1up) saying the 'Dreams' (reading parts) are a "bad use of the medium" is totally wrong. They give you a whole other layer to the character development, and you honestly get attached to Kaim and what he has been through, because reading the dreams makes you *think* about the characters and settings in a way most video games never touch on.

EDIT: and this game makes me realize how much i hate western RPGs (read: mass effect)

I gave Mass Effect 2 hours, and all it gave me was frustratingly clunky combat, no explanation / tutorial, and me cursing at the screen while trying to figure out the HORRIBLE combat system they just throw you into with no explanation. Western RPGs have no backbone, they try to appeal to as many people as they can, for sales purposes, and in doing so totally turn their back on the game and what it's genre stands for - have to appeal to the Gears of Wars junkies, so let's throw in some actiony over the shoulder shooting action, butttt we are bioware, so let's get those RPG kiddies we have following everything we do and throw in some RPG elements - AND then we have a game that is mediocre at 2 things instead of good at one thing

/rant over

Man, I died like 2 times against the first boss. lol, insane. I worked the second boss but it's kinda lame you don't get any SP for it.

I'm not that far into the games, but I love what i've played so far. I was afraid I wouldn't like it so much since the reviews haven't been that high. Unless the game really goes downhill, this game seems very underrated.

My party looks like this.

Front:

Kaim - Warrior (No battle skills at all, just owning fools with elemental and species rings)
Seth - Thief/Assassin (Run away skill, steal, doesn't use elemental or species rings, mostly atk + or critical + rings like Herculean ring)
Mack - Monk (Uses skills and spirit magic for buffs. Rarely use attack with Mack so I don't equip a ring on him)

These three all have abilities or some way to increase GC, they're my tanks.

Back:

Jansen - Red Mage (never attacks, only uses magic or defends. Maybe I should put the GC charge while defending accessory on my guys in the back?)
Cooke - White Mage (bad ass spunky girl is bad at combat but my main healer. She's also an important asset for Jansen, my magic offense guy. She helps make magic attacks that would normally take 2 turns to cast 1 turn to be cast. Awesome.)

Now that I know that Ming's accessory will let Jansen cast black magic on all enemies, there's no need for her!

I dont use specific rings/equipment for each member. I constantly change them in battle to adapt to any enemy or situation (either one character runs out of MP, or needs to defend, steal,...).

Yesterday i just got Ming. I plan on playing with her a bit to discover her and level her up to the same level as the others.

I´ll definitely keep Kaim and Seth in the party and use them as tanks both for melee attack (and better now that they have learned Mackt skills) and for defense (with both using recover GC & HP when defending).

I have also been using Mackt with the Wall skill for defense and ocasionally attack. Havent tried spirit magic yet.

Cooke is my main White Mage, using her skills to heal as they dont spend MP, help with defense spells, as casting support for Jansen and ocassionally help with black magic.

And Jansen as Red Mage, for both attack with spells and heal.

Wow wow wow, this game is AWESOME.

It feels like a continuation of Final Fantasy after X. Seriously. After the first two boss fights I can already say this is better than FFXII as a whole. This really could be a FF, and I mean that in a positive, not negative way.

Also, the boss fights can actually be challenging!

Mistwalker rocks... first Blue Dragon, now this. They are great, it's too bad their games don't sell as if they were FF games.

Ming is a monster those compostite spells are great, mack is only good for skill linking imo his physical skills are great for kaim and seth then he has sprit magic whicjh will come in handy for my mages so i have to keep him in the mix.

Loving it so far. Got it Wednesday, was kinda cheesed apparently the store never got the pre-order bonus, they told me they were going to try to get the cards in, but I haven't heard from them at all. Anyone have any spares?

I'm in the area after the Space Worms, pretty cool so far, Kaim and Jansen are awesome. Seth, is a little annoying, but hopefully she'll get better. Graphics are a bit hit and miss, but the combat has been GREAT! It's challenging, and strategic. The row system seems pretty friggen cool.

I also have to say, great job with Jansen so far, the VA really runs with the role, and his constant blabbering isn't something you see often in this type of game.

I picked up this game after not having touched a JRPG since FFX (I'd also finished all the classics up until then as well) and I'd forgotten how fucking hard these games can be. the second boss ate my face multiple times before i got my act together and actually devised a strategy.

From all the people in this thread that "haven't bought a JRPG since x" and including the fact that hopefully all regular JRPG fans bought it one might hope for good sales numbers. Of course it's just anecdotal, but after Japan this game really needs them :/

I got the ship and exploring a bit reached and landed at the Numara Athlon or something like that (its in the north of the city).

Theres a big like fish with huge HP and attacks that must be one of the optional bosses.

I tried beating it with Poison, which does a fair amount of damage and stop it with paralyze or sleep but my characters cant survive 2 of his attacks. I suppose i should leave it for now, no?

Btw, that beach scenery is amazing in the graphics department, more so when Numara looks so sub-par. Is incredible the huge difference between some settings in the game.

And where is Gothza? theres a star in the map pointing like the direction i should go but thats the mentioned Athlon.

Durante

I think that's simply a normal enemy, but you're far too low level to defeat it at this point.

Gothza is still very far away, but the point you need to go to now should be marked on the map (far to the east).

it has like almost 10k HP and its attacks deal like 1k at least to any member. My party´s Melee attacks only do like 1 or 2 damage. You have to beat it only with magic, specially ground.

Thats more than any other before. I´m at levels 22-23 now and havent had any problems before, except for the famous Numaran knights encounter.

Btw, i found a chest there with
regen spell

Well my brother bought a copy recently. Did we get a different copy? Where are the long load times that the game is supposed to have? 2-3 seconds to enter a battle, a bit longer to get out of battle (about 3-4 seconds). But maybe it's because i'm early in the game (at the forest/mountainous area). So far so good. VERY good looking game.

Wonders how the game is doing, not that it has much to do with whether its a great game or not.

It's penetrated my Friend's List rather decisively, and the thread here at least seems to be busier than Blue Dragon's. I have no anecdotal real world sales evidence though, but I think it will do fairly well, all told.

Ugh! I got a dirty disc read error last night after like 20-30 mins of story after fighting a bunch of knights and a giant

before that. So I need to repeat that all over again :(

Yeah, I had the game crash on me on Disc 1 once and lost around 30 minutes as well. Luckily nothing untoward has happened since.

And wow, the game really opens up on Disc 4.

It's what I did. I'm a bit skint these days but suddenly a few days ago I remembered what it was like seeing that opening cinematic going right into gameplay and I was like "WHAT THE FUCK, I'VE BEEN DYING FOR THIS GAME FOR OVER A YEAR!" and I grabbed a stack of 360 games to trade in.

I've been playing it ever since.

That sucks. I just beat that part myself last night. Took a few tries. The bosses in this game are actually hard!

I used prism a lot on that battle and it was cake walk. The one before it, man, that took me 2 tries and I think a little bit of luck was involved. It was like "please don't use down force, please don't use down force"

I keep telling myself no more games, no more till i clear some of my backlog, but then there was Rez and i couldnt resist(Thank goodness i didnt) then NGB and yeah i been waiting for LO too long not to buy it. *caves in*

You did 4 dreams before the mansion? I only did 3, so I must have missed one.
Can you go back and get these things? I wouldn't want to miss out on any...

The sorceres mansion looks like you are gonna meet Marcus Phoenix at any corner. Looks nice but for now Crimson forest and the beach remain the most beautiful environments for me.

i´m sure btw who the sorceres really is.

Before that i tried the kelolon statues minigame. Rather easy but i couldnt find one of them

i found the ones up the stairs, the one behind the waterfall and the ones inside the house/inn

Don't worry. The j-gaffers weren't feeling it, and that pretty much guaranteed it'd be worth checking out.

Actually I dunno, I think bebpo and duckroll usually are pretty close with impressions, but I'm also really loving Lost Odyssey right now. So my guess is the reason they gave the story a bad review is probably because it has a bad ending or something that left a sour taste in their mouth.

Joining the choir here. The game is simply outstanding so far. Some plus/minus observations so far:

+ Plot and character seems more mature than the typical JRPG.
+ Small stories are superbly written, and truly add to the main character development.
+ Combat system is fun, engaging, and deep.
+ Music is really good.
+ No need for grinding is AWESOME. Developers should take note.
+ Re: Near the end of disc 1 - HUGE SPOILER -
Lirum! I really liked that story development.
+ Skill link system is really intuitive, and useful.
+ Good VA.
+ Really well paced random battles.
+ Great menus/presentation.
+ Jansen
- Graphics are not that great.
- I wish the combat screen showed the order of characters.

I can count too many times I haven't entirely agreed with their perceptions! I remember them spooging over FFXII, Kingdom Hearts II, Contact, Okami, and a few others. They were all meh. Yakuza was good gameplay wise, but the story they hyped so much was typical shit. The fact they didn't feel LO's story is pretty expected!

Well I enjoyed FFXII (excellent story until 3/4 through, awesome characters), KH2 (disney nostalagia) and Okami (fantastic art) personally so maybe it's your tastes that don't match with theirs.

So I'll keep my low expectations and see if I'm suprised by the end. Either way, right now I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

They prefere Kluke's birthday party and Marumaru's happy dance festivel in Blue Dragon, that pretty much sums it up.

i kid

I agree with most of your points, but I have to comment here since it comes up so often. I think that's mostly because a lot of people that have not played many JRPGs during the last few years play this. Because developers have taken note -- years ago: except for intentional genre dinosaurs like Dragon Quest, there has not been any need to grind in the vast majority of PS2 and even most PS1 JRPGs. It's not a new development, albeit a very welcome one.

Nah, FFXII and Okami are good games. I agree with them as often as I violently disagree: just like with most people actually.
