I figure I'll ask one more time before I bite, any more opinions on the strat guide?

Well, it has mapped locations for every single item in the game, plus detailed info on all of the bonus stuffs. The game itself is pretty straightforward so the walkthrough part really isn't needed. But the maps and item locations are nice.

The decision to include accessories for cutscenes definitely can generate some absurd moments. Kaim was wearing kitten ears when
his daughter dies right in front of him.

I am through disk 1 and here are my impressions so far.

1. Voice acting is excellent for a game. The only complaint is some of the characters that serve as comedic relief tend to overact there parts. Jansen and that Numara general guy.
However, now that Ming is in the party Jansen seems to be becoming a more serious character. I might end up liking him by the end of the game.

2. Characterization - So far I think it's really good as I am feeling empathy for several of the main characters, especially Kaim. I highly recommend reading the dreams as I think this is the main empathetic tool the game uses. Also, each character feels important to the story and has a distinct personality.

3. Story - Great! Can't talk about it though because of spoilers.

4. Combat - Ok, I have been cursed by the reviewers. Every time there is a random encounter, I can't help noticing the amount of time it takes to load. I probably would never have noticed but those fing reviewers had to point it out. It seems to me to be at least 10s. But that is minor, overall I think the combat is just generic jrpg fare, nothing innovative at all. However, I would say overall it is satisfying because you cannot just spam attack and fall asleep, even in the random encounters.

5. Difficulty - So far the first boss has BY FAR been the hardest boss of the game. In fact, every progressive boss seems to be getting easier in a logarithmic fashion.

6. Customization - Limited. I just give everyone the highest magic available to them and most of the other skills seem to have limited use.

Overall 8.5/10. But since I am an jrpg nut, 9/10. I am really just not understanding the hate Gooch got over this game. But then again, I am only on disk 2.

Umm... eek?! Where was
"Gamble"
? I think I missed it.

I think that was one of the prizes for the Kelolon wreath minigame in Tosca Village. It's a really good spell, you should definitely go back for it.

You can always go back for spells. I know exactly where the one you missed is—it's an optional area and you may not have gone there at all yet. There are VERY few spells you can buy in shops later in the game, so don't count on them to fill in your blanks. The missing spell is in
the Numara Atoll (accessible via the Slantnose). The enemies there are unbeatable at your level, but they're all very slow and easy to run away from if you want to get the items there.

Ahhh... Well I was there and tried to explore the area, but as you mentioned got beaten to death when starting the first fight... so I decided to visit it later on. Anyway, thanks for the info!!

Would like to know too. At first thought you needed it to move it to the door in the other hall with the stairs.
All I remember doing with it was putting it on the moving platform so the other one would go down, and there was an item there. But maybe there is more to do there during Disc 4. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

I also used it to the get that item... what I don't know what that item is for. Any hint?

I have *no* idea what the item was since it was written in Japanese :p

Edit: Browsing through my 35 hours of videos of the game (yeah...), and that shot was quite funny :)

Awesome game, about 3 hours in

But hell, the first boss on Ipsilon Mts. is kicking my ass. That sure was a surprise. Guess I gotta gain a couple before trudging forward.

Arg, need another bit of help. In the village at the start of disk 2, I've gotten to the mansion:

I'm supposed to find some sort of gem to put in the mirror. Where is it? I doubt this is too difficult to solve, but it is frustrating me because I get the same stupid fight with those ghosts every 10 steps and it takes forever, even fleeing.

Numara General is way too campy for me and has one of the worst designs in the game (and the model/texturing is quite bad). well i would say that for all numara citizens (queen included).

Jansen on the other hand has really funny dialog and as you pointed is becoming a bit more serious ( liked the way Seth teased him with the crush comment).

I think i got that item too (at least did the same and put the rock in the platform)

From the pic, i know the first kanji means "stone" and theres another thats "hand" (2nd silver one) and i think "person" (the 4th silver one). Doesnt help much at all xD.

Is anyone else bothered by the large disparity in writing between the main game itself and the Thousand Years of Dreams segments? The dreams are written as little vignettes and are composed quite beautifully. I enjoy each one of them as I find them and I find myself actually looking forward to them. The main story so far, however, comes off like a fan fic. It's got broody mcbrooder, really crappy plot devices like the planted assasination cockblock, some really poor direction, poor camera usage and dialogue that sounds like its written in the side margins of someone's freshman year notebook. Why can't the quality of writing in the main game come up to the dreams? Or any good work of fiction? Maybe I'm done with JRPG plot contrivances, or maybe this writing picks up. I'm only at the first boss on the peak so far.

The "Thousand Years of Dreams segments" were written by a famous author. The name escapes me at the moment.

Does this game have a "new game+" when you beat it. you know where i can keep my level but start a new game.

Disc 1 complete. Got wiped twice by the same battle(knights by the flowers), man was that a bitch. Other than that, pretty awesome start and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

Ok, Sakaguchi has succeeded.

I just teared up on one of the Thousand Year of Dreams, the one titled "Don't Forget Me Now, You Hear"?

Damn..... :(

That one had me tear up also...this is by far the most emotional RPG I've ever played. Honestly everyone who reviewed this game did not play the same game I am I don't think :lol

That son-of-a-bitch worm got killed me 2 times before I finally adjusted and beat him on the third. I am really liking how I am dying in this game though, don't get me wrong. It is awesome that this game is so polished and has a great challenge as well.

Currently in prison watching Jansen have some fun with Seth... :D

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Dear lord the opening intro with the cut from CG to real-time had me spooked for a second. This game is unreal.

In the crimson forest, how are you supposed to use those circular lifts to get to those items? I already beat the boss and have Mack in the party but they aren't doing anything when I stand on them. What am I doing wrong here?

This game is a piece of shit.

You can’t race through it because of the way the experience point system is set up. It wants you to fight a set number of random encounters per area, and if you don’t, you run the risk of being underleveled when you encounter a boss. It also doesn’t allow you to race through areas and then simply farm experience in a single area if you find yourself underleveled. Instead it forces you to backtrack from one area to the next to the next if you need to farm a significant amount of experience. Worse yet, then you have to double back yet again to get to where you were going in the first place and slog through random encounters that give you virtually no experience points.

It’s a terrible way to scale the difficulty. It’s designed for people who actually like to wander around empty environments looking for piles of rocks to kick over in the hopes of finding trivial items that they’ll never need. And it forces fast players to play the game slowly throughout.

you have to activate the dohicky(lift thing) that took you back to the forest. The one at the farthest northeast of the map. After that you should be able to use the lifts.

LOL, figured it out. I had to ride the lift from the boss area out again, then it activated the other lifts. Just wasted 20 fucking minutes wandering around this stupid forest.

So it sucks because.. you suck. Interesting.

Go up the hallway in that room and open the second door on the left. You'll fight some enemies. After that, the gem will pop out.

Ok, this is very strange.

Just got back from Bestbuy, and Disc 1 and 4 have obvious smudges on them. Now, can this be because of the packaging? It's very strange, they don't look quite like fingerprints either.

Now, can this be a factory thing, like a laserburn? I don't think it's due to BB, that wouldn't make much sense since it just came out, but is that possible?

Sorry about the odd question, PM me if needed so this thread doesn't get sidetracked.

No your reading comp skills suck. Reread what I read. You can't play at a fast pace. It forces you to play at a very specific pace. If you race through areas and find yourself significantly underleveled, you have to backtrack from one area to the next in order to farm experience. And then when you make your way back, you'll get virtually no experience for the random encounters you fight because the areas have already been farmed for experience.

It has nothing to do with skill. The combat system is moronically simple.

My brothers had a weird smudge on it as well, it wouldn't allow him to get past the beginning of the game, it would freeze again and again. I'd exchange that if I were you to avoid future problems. My brother went and got a new one without the smudges, and now it works fine.

Seth's voice actor has a hot voice by the way.

That chick has been in everything, but she's one of the betters in the common circuit, she did Rikku in FFX/X2, if I recall right.

Play the first boss at Level 11 and beat it. Then talk to me about sucking.

Just picked this one up. Is there something wrong with my 360 or is there some massive stuttering going on. Seems cool though so far.

You must be playing it wrong. I've progressed from the beginning to the end of each dungeon area and never experienced any need for backtracking. In fact, if anything, I'm overleveled, reaching the level cap usually a few battles before the boss.

lol i played that first boss on level 11 too, and got crushed. then i went back real quick and leveled up to 12 (i was close to leveling up) and i beat him by continually healing jensen and blasting the bird with fire. worked like a charm!

You can still succeed if you're underleveled as long as you're skilled. You can go through the game quickly by spending the shortest amount of time possible.

What you're trying to say is that the game won't let you powerlevel your way through everything. No sympathy here.

Some of you are dense. No that's not what I'm saying at all.

Im curious to how you fought the boss at lv 11 as well being you start at level 10.........

i can tell you that i didn't run into many random battles. i didn't actively try to avoid them (as if there was a way to avoid them) but it just happened that way!
