Regarding the Kelolon hunt:
Did you get the statues in the houses? Each building has exactly one statue. Then there are a few around some corners, and of course those on the elevated sections of town and the one behind the waterfall. There's also one atop the watchtower thing.

The middle house has? I bet that´s the one i missed then.

Himuro, get close to the waterfall and rocks in the little river, and theres the option to jump to the other side. The statue is in a small cave behind the waterfall.

I agree with most of your points, but I have to comment here since it comes up so often. I think that's mostly because a lot of people that have not played many JRPGs during the last few years play this. Because developers have taken note -- years ago: except for intentional genre dinosaurs like Dragon Quest, there has not been any need to grind in the vast majority of PS2 and even most PS1 JRPGs. It's not a new development, albeit a very welcome one.

You're right in that some developers have taken note. Actually, 360 RPGs don't require the player to grind. I'm thinking about some RPGs back in the previous gen. But I hope S-E takes note (and I really don't want to turn this into a S-E does or does not discussion, but in my experience with their games, that seems to be the case; same with Atlus.)

I also forgot: + Jansen is a great comic relief.

OK so I'm really really enjoying the game so far. Seems incredibly polished and really feels like the first "next-gen" rpg I've played. Plus the VA is surprisingly good... Jansen is awesome :lol

Well, I think I played all S-E games released on PS2, and except for Dragon Quest (which will probably never change due to its fanbase) none required grinding. The only Atlus game where I had to grind was SMT3: Nocturne. Two out of the dozens upon dozens of JRPGs on PS2 doesn't seem like a prevailing genre trend to me. But you're right, this is quite off topic.

Regarding the Kelolon statues:
Yeah, IIRC the one in the middle house is a small one on the shelf to the left. But I could remember this wrong.

DQ doesn't require grinding.
Well, it's probably just that the whole game (talking about DQ8 specifically here) felt a bit like grinding to me after the first 10 hours, with the high rate of random encounters, slow battles and a story that didn't really compel me to continue.

WTF. Microsoft?

There is A store with A copy in a city of 90 thousand people, and at least 3 other people looking for a copy that were looking for a copy the same time i was at various stores. The best buy guy said they had 27 copies in transit, but they wouldn't be there until next week. this game was undershipped and underpackaged :(

on the plus side, walmart got a BUTTLOAD of premium 360s.

Alright so I just hit my first

and somehow
I've only got 15 seeds... Seriously I've been SO flipping thorough I don't know how I've already missed 5
o_O

Anyone have any tips on where I might have missed some?

Western RPGs have no backbone, they try to appeal to as many people as they can, for sales purposes, and in doing so totally turn their back on the game and what it's genre stands for

You are so completely, devastatingly wrong, that I don't even know what to say in response.

Lost Odyssey was looking really mediocre, but all these positive impressions are making me rethink getting it.

I am sobbing after the first Thousand Year Dream. :lol That was incredibly well written.

So far those short stories are putting the writing in a lot of my favorite books to shame.

My daughter was sitting next to me during the first one about the dying little girl and I almost fucking cried. From a video game. A Japanese video game. Unbelievable.

Not sure, but for reference I had exactly 20 when I came across the first one. Make sure you check all of the trees in the Ipsilon Mountains, because it's easy to miss a few there.

Am I only the one that finds them cheesily (I coined a word) melodramatic? I realize they are supposed to be short, but I find it tells me how I should feel instead of crafting the situation well enough to evoke the emotions naturally.

But I am being harsh, I'd say half are well done.

Not sure...and perhaps I was caught off guard by the three I read so far.

But for what I've read I must say they are so far above and beyond the writing I've seen in any other videogame it's a little silly. And yeah, I've played most of the old PC classics.

How do they tell you how you should feel at all....?

Looks like I am the only one that feels this way.

Without going back and rereading a bunch of them for quotes, I think for the sake of brevity the author often chooses to explicitly describe the emotional state of Kaim. Also, stuff like "Because Seth lives a 1,000 years, Seth is always alone." (Not an exact quote, but something like that is said during Seth's dream when you land in ?Tosca?. This is a pet peeve of mine in all writing, so I am overly sensitive to it. But like I said before, these are by nature so short its hard to do otherwise.

Were there any in
that mining area?
because I don't think I found many, if any at all there and I could have sworn I checked EVERY tree at least a good 3-5 times lol

I think there was 1 regular and 1 slot seed in that area.

The game is awesome. I love the thousand years of dreams stuff. I really havent met a character I dont like (seth is a cutie <3 ), solid voice acting is great. The frame rate and load times havent made me stop and take notice at all.

This is another case of reviews failing me.

I've had the game for over a day but have been feeling so sick that I can barely get out of bed.....tried a little bit of it though (like around 1 hour or so) and holy crap I wasn't expecting it to look this good. So far it basically feels like FFX with balls out amazing looking graphics.....hopefully the story won't be as retarded as FFX.

Ugh....I gotta get back to bed.

I like them a lot as well (you can find post upon post of me praising them in this thread alone) and no offense, but you must read pretty mediocre books. Let's not go too far beyond ourselves here ;)

You apparently didn't play Planescape: Torment. And anyway, it's a lot easier to have great writing in short stories than it is to have it in a game. So I don't think you're making a useful comparison, because the writing in the actual game of LO is not quite that great.

I liked FFXII, KHII and I absolutely loved OKAMI, and I'm not feeling LO at all, at the point were I just got bored and I didn't care for it. Does it get interesting past the 5 hour mark?

To your first point, yeah, I read sci-fi, and a lot of it. 95% of it is pretty mediocre. lol

And I did play Planescape: Torment. Perhaps I should clarify here. I'm not saying LOs writing is better when the two games are matched up game to game. I am saying however if you were to take a short portion of Torment against a few of the short stories I've read so far I'd give the nod to LO.

Slowing down a bit here now that it's the weekend... I just got to the
Numara prison on the ship, playing the "jail escape" minigame, which is kind of annoying, but the guard who lost his memory is hilarious
.

I suggest you read some Iain M Banks if you haven't done so already. Start with "Consider Phlebas".

Perhaps, but my point is that this is hardly a comparison of game writing. It's comparing apples and chicken wings. (And I even potentially disagree with the conclusion of that comparison depending on whether I'm allowed to pick the short portion of Torment)

I am mixed on the graphics. Some parts of it are really amazing. The opening scene was great and I loved the art direction of Uhra...the mountain though was just a lot of 2d shimmery grass and flatish ground texturing. I guess my major problem is that the developer used a lot of 2d texture tricks to give objects more detail...like the first boss' beak, the pointy flat hair, etc. But I'm still really impressed overall. I don't like Kaim's earrings.

I'm really impressed by the music. The battle theme is fantastic.

Love the battle system.

I will buy this game if MS smart up and change the packaging.

Does anyone know if the Asian version has English support & it's compatible with the American 360?

I just got one of these. $.84 and holds 4 discs individually. First disc is held behind the instruction book.

I'm considering getting this game, but I usually hate JRPGS (I enjoyed the first 10 hours of FFXII though). Would I enjoy this game? I'm really in a mood for an epic game.

That depends on the reason you usually hate JRPGs. If it's the random encounter turn-based gameplay (which your FF12 comment may indicate) then you probably won't enjoy this game.

i can take random encounters as long as it's not frequent and if the gameplay is at least decent (FFX didnt bother me). In general it's usually the story, characters, and writing that make me hate JPRGS.

If you like exploring, great scenery, a freaking great story, and pretty funny characters (plus you can handle the random, turn-based part) then this is the game to get.

The main thing that's turning me off from purchasing this game are the random-encounter battles. I'm sorry, but for me, that's a gameplay element that should have been left behind long ago in the RPG genre.

The rest of the game would have to be really good, especially the story (since the story would be the primary driving element in an RPG) to get me to buy this game. Though, it seems according to some reviews, the story isn't so great either.

I also have not played a JRPG in a while. Last one I played through was Tales of the Abyss, which I enjoyed. Then I tried to play FF12, but I lost interest in that halfway through. Since then I've gone with western RPG's like The Witcher and Mass Effect.

I'm about as anti-random battle as you can get, but to be honest, they're really not that bad in this game. The encounter rate is low enough that you'll only fight the same sets of enemies a few times before moving on to new areas and new enemies.

If the *packaging* is holding you back from playing a game you'd otherwise want to play, I say shame on you.

Sorry...I'm on the fence on the game, so the packaging has become an issue...call me superficial...

Damn, this game is pretty hard. Just got past the 2nd boss
2 snake things
and it kicked my ass pretty hard, had to try again multiple times and only beat it by getting really lucky.. maybe I'm underleveled, but I thought you didn't have to grind in this game?

It's kinda hard to be underleved as long as you fight all of the battles you come across in a given area. The bosses can be quite difficult especially the first 2, but since then I haven't had any problems(on 2nd disc now). You just have to have a good strategy that's all.

Yeah, sorry. I don't get how the packaging plays in to the decision to buy a game at all.

A game is for playing, IMO. But that should go without saying.

To each his own.

I don't think you were under leveled for that boss, you just have to learn the strategy early: Each boss has a different way to beat it, which is almost exactly like a Zelda boss-fight. For that boss, the way I beat him was by keeping two of those little guys alive so he only got a little bit of charge each time. With Jensen I was attacking the boss, and with Seth I was using shield + health regeneration for the team. Only Jensen died fighting that boss once, but that strategy worked with both of the worm things.

Oh man... the boss fight in the Western Ruins is killing me. I had got Kaim,
Sed, Sarah and Ming
up to level 70 in the dungeon, but now I have to level
Mack
up from 40 because the boss fight requires he be present. I think I came to this dungeon about 20 levels before I was supposed to... I've been here for around six hours. Least enjoyable dungeon by far.

i'm liking this game a lot better than blue dragon. i didn't hate blue dragon but holy shit the game was piss easy (yes i know there is "hard" mode, but i was already 6 hours in by the time i discovered it and i dont have the time to replay those 6 hours), and i fucking couldn't stand the characters. that damn cat thing had the most annoying voice ive ever heard in a videogame, and the whole scene at his village (where the villagers get sick and you need to save them) was so god damn lame (they all start dancing).

plus nene reminded me of that old man from family guy
