I am heavily considering buying this, just have a few questions, and as you can see, I'm not gonna sort through the entire thread.

How long is it?

Story?(Though the general notion is that though the plot is kinda weak, the dreams are fantastic, could be wrong though)

Are the load times really that horrible?

Does it really come in that crappy packaging?

Overall, is it a good to great game?

1. 40-50hrs for main story 60+ if you want to do the side stuff
2. Story decent, 1000 years of dreams mostly amazing
3. No
4. Yes
5. Yes

How long is it?

don't know. people say between 40-60 hours depending on how many sidequests you do.

Story?(Though the general notion is that though the plot is kinda weak, the dreams are fantastic, could be wrong though)

so far the regular story is pretty good. the short stories are awesome as well, but then again i personally would prefer reading as you can develop your own mental image of the story.

Are the load times really that horrible?

frequent, not horrible.

Does it really come in that crappy packaging?

sure do! the worst part is that in order to play the game you have to leave the case open right in front of you while you play and witness the shame all through your session.

Overall, is it a good to great game?

i would say very good and worth $59.99 (but not the tax)

Story: Just like any typical Final Fantasy story i dont get where the weak story theme is coming from. Yes the dreams are great.

Loading: Loading is no where near as bad as people make it out to be, not really a problem.

Packaging: As long as your disk aren't scratched does it really matter? Yeah i wish the packaging and box art was better but it's a non issue.

Overall: Im only at the beginning of disk 3 but it's by far the best next-gen jrpg so far. If you like jrpg get the game it's a no brainier.

As a long time Gaf-lurker, I've decided to actually make a post about something.

Lost Odyssey is fantastic. Little technical issues aside, I'm simply floored by the Thousand Year of Dreams stories, the soundtrack, the characters, etc.

My only question thus far is about experience points. I think I probably missed something, but I never see just how many I get when I see the results screen. And sometimes I notice that I don't get very many at all at certain points. How does this work exactly?

I'm still on disc one and am just entering Crimson Forest after about 12:25 of playtime... Am I just slow or what? Someone was saying they finished disc one at the nine hour mark...?!?! :lol
That's not really that slow, it took me about 10:25 to finish disc 1.

no shit. I had been losing steam at that point, but holy shit...awesome.

Finished disc 1 (at exacly 19 hours, I think 7 of those were idle time though) and 2 hours into disc 2. What a great game this is. The stories are incredible, the skill system is engaging, and the characters range from good to great.

This is the best JRPG I've played in a long awhile.

Is "SP earned", up there with the gold and items.

Every level up takes exactly 100 experience points. When you first enter a dungeon, you usually get pretty good experience from battles (70-100 an encounter). As you gain levels, you slowly start receiving less experience, which means you're getting closer to the cap, and eventually you'll get very little experience from battle at all, which mean you're the correct level you need to be for the boss.

It's a great system and I hope other RPGs use it in the future.

i dunno what happened to the bosses, but they are easy as hell now. Ever since I defeated those two worm creatures on disc 1, I haven't been challenge in the slightest.

Right now I'm stuck on disc 2, at this I wanna say "prototype grand staff", after you get to the "haunted town" and stuff.

Very annoying right now :/.

Is my 360 just incredibly unstable, or is there something wrong with my Disc 2? The music ends up cutting out every so often. Had to even reset while fighting
Gongora at Experimental Staff
because the music just stopped during the fight. Whats up with that. Great experiences on the 360, but the disc reading problems with perfectly good discs are getting really annoying as of late.

My disc drive is a POS. I get same problems with battles. Sometimes games will just freeze because disc drive decides to take a break.

Well that was a major screw up then...just had to friggen finish that fight with 0 musi playing. If this crap happens during the final boss battle, where the soundtrack REALLY counts...i'm really going to be pissed.

I didn't expect to like this game as much as I do, but it's really great. I wish there was less melodrama though, when people cry in this game it looks bizarre.

Damn it even happened during the
escape sequence where you have to run away... wtf is up with that? Does Lost Odyssey use some kinda streaming tech like Mass Effect or Assassins Creed does

I told you guys I was going to get the game, and well I did.

I REALLY am impressed with it so far. I was super skeptical. I promised myself that I was going to follow reviews less this year (to an extent) and try to have a more open mind about games.

This is my first JRPG since FFX (which I loved).

I am only an hour in so I know my impressions mean little but:

-The dreams of a thousand years: I for sure thought I was going to hate these but if the first one is any indication, these are going to be great

-Graphics: OMFG, no one is talking about this games graphics. If FFXIII looks like this I will have no qualms

-Loading: Not too bad of a problem, although it is noticeable. I am the type to really hate these things and so far I'm ok with the loading.

-Combat: Too soon, but so far seems pretty on par with the genre

I just started this weekend, reached the 7 hour mark. That first boss got me like 3 times before I looked to an online guide suggesting I spam Flare. Felt like a cheap victory, but whatever, at least I moved on :lol

Hmm, I don't find the graphics all that impressive. I think the game looks a lot better when you zoom in a little. Try holding the right trigger about 25% in. The fully zoomed out normal view just doesn't show much character detail, which is a shame, because the costume design is quite nice.

Great - thanks for the info! Are there any areas later (optional?) in the game that don't have a cap or is that pretty universal throughout?

Things seem to be moving a little fast for me though. Im enjoying every minute of the game and exploring everything I can, but i've just hit disc 3 and im at 35hrs game time. I dunno if its because the game is multiple discs that it makes things "feel shorter" or what.

The graphics are really hit or miss, IMO. You have gorgeous areas like the crimson forest and beach, etc., but the cities so far have really been lacking. Great glimpse of what RPGs will look like continuing through this generation, though.

YES!

This was my favorite LO track when I first listened to it a couple of months ago.

It sounds like a collaboration between Uematsu + Disney + Tim Burton. :D

Can't wait for tomorrow.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Just realized I am at the 10 hour mark already...and am only just hitting the Ghost House area. Dunno how much longer Disc 1 is, but I am taking my sweet time exploring it. Adore the game...

Though I still wish the turn order gauge played a more prominent role in combat decisions(it's too hidden for the most part!), and also yea...the ring system needs fleshing out. Plenty to equip and create, but it could adopt more interesting measures of timing and variation just to spice things up. Blue Dragon handled both of these above complaints a bit more tactfully.

So far there's hardly been any character interaction on the second disc. What the heck is going on? I like the characters a lot so it sucks they're starting to get neglected to typical let's go here, here, and here devices.
More gameplay FTW? / I thought you were waaaaay deeper in the game than that from reading what you've posted here. Weird.

One thing that bothers me. WHen you hit a save point you do no get all your health back. but if you die or reload the save point you get all your HP MP back.

Dammit, I knew that voice was familiar.

Loving this game so far, I hit the second disc just a bit ago.

Kaim being Cooke and Mack's grandfather was a great turn of events, and Lirum's death scene was really well done.

29 hours in, 3rd disc, beat the ice canyon boss, pretty easy, Kaim and seth are starting to kick some ass.

End of disc 2's dungeon was amazing, some of the best graphics i've seen on 360, UE3 still had some of that juice left :D

It's amazing the positive forum response this is getting. I mean, Blue Dragon surely had its moments in the community, but Lost Odyssey is being received unpredictably strongly on the forums. I'm still on the edge as to whether or not I'm going to pick it up in the next week or so (unless there are a barrage of positive comments following this post -- that might incite me to do so) but I'm definitely picking it up soon.
agreed. thanx for all the impressions. :D It has made me feel better about deciding to pick up this game.

I JUST SAID THIS WAS A BAD IDEA

"I HAVE TO DO THIS"

IS ANYONE LISTENING TO ME

I'm updating the RPG cliche list. All cool characters must start with J. Jansen joins Junpei on my very long list.

Eh? I just kept his little minions down to a minimum, then best up on the main one with magic attacks.

Why the fuck does this seem feasible out of a sudden. Wow it feels like a hit the dumb wall or something today. Lemme see if that works... Flare that bitch!

Just finished it.

Seth :(
And it was most likely because of the bonus content I did, but the game lacked a decent final boss fight. I understand what they tried to do, but ending it with a immortal only fight instead with your own group was probably a not so good decision.

Also Jansen is the man and Tolten is.....what exactly was Toltens purpose in this story again?

Tolten felt like a spoony bard.

Seriously.

Awesome, 5 of 7 characters I have right now are mages. It is kind of a strange design decision given the importance of your front wall.

I am also a little disappointed that Sara's cleavage doesn't live up to the outrageous cleavage of Seth and Ming's. :lol

Anyway, I think I am mostly through disk 2 and still loving it.

Its just nice it was done somewhat realistically. I mean with Seth you kinda noticed them move abit, but its not unbelievable motion. Still though, once I noticed Ming's veins...I cant UNnotice them...

Exactly, during any cutscene with Seth or Ming I just can't look away. In all seriousness, I would have rather a more realistic chest on all the characters.

Heh, the first thing I noticed about Ming was the veins....

Are they publishing the Dreams book in the Western world, or is there anywhere to find transcripts of them online?
