Lost Odyssey > Mass Effect
Mass Effect was an awesome RPG; however, it was just awesome in a very limited number of places.

*cough* story planets *cough*

Disk 3 is shaping up to be a lot better than 2 in my opinion. Seeing the intro to Gotzah was awesome as well. I'm loving the fact that
the story has begun to split up between the different characters. The whole train sequence was great and so was the arrival of Grand Staff at Uhra.
I can't wait to see what happens next.

Okee dokee, I'm finally going to chime in here: I'm over 14 hours in! And I don't play RPGs!

The game has me hooked. I was worried about the difficulty but so far it's been okay. I'm kind of an RPG n00b, so I was surprised that I breezed past the first couple of bosses after reading some of the earlier posts (but I did end up getting my butt kicked repeatedly by the Cavalry fight). My thoughts:

+ The story is what hooked me. It's surprisingly deep and adult.
+ Combat is pretty exciting. Turn-based adds a nice level of tension.
+ Graphics look good for the most part.
+ The music is awesome!

- The Thousand Year stories are BAD. I read the first four and now I just skip them. The cheesy text animations I can look past (click A to display the entire page FTW), but the actual writing is horrible. I like the story, but the writing quality is trite.
- The packaging, sigh. I thought I wouldn't mind, but seeing it in person makes your realize that the idiot who decided to stack 3 discs in 1 slot and toss the fourth in a sleeve NEEDS TO BE FIRED.
- Err, although I'm loving the story, the melodrama is a little bit too thick sometimes.
- Kaim is probably the least engaging main character in the game. I shouldn't have to read fucking short stories to learn more about the lead. That should be in the game. Let me read to learn about the other characters maybe, but not the lead, come on.

God yes. Seconded, thirded, eighteenthed. Holy shit, please.

Theres a set of rings thats increases the steal rates. Level 1, 2, and I assume 3. I'm 40 hours in (early-ish on disc 4) and I'm pretty sure I can only make the first 2 rings so far.

Can't win 'em all, I guess.

Good JRPGs really illustrate the downside of the western obsession with player choice. I loved Mass Effect, but I like a game even better which can spend its development resources on a greater quantity of quality writing and scenario design, rather than getting caught up in the thousands of choices in hundreds of dialog wheels, most of which end up having little relevance anyway.

Disc 4

Wow the secret cave under
Gangora's house.
is crazy. Kaim went from level 32 to level 48 there. :lol

Also I snagged a couple of bracelets. One adds +3 to slots and the other adds +5..
Sweet.

Man, that cave is THE place to grind. You get a lot of SP, it has a really high level cap, and if everyone uses Anti-Petrification you're unlikely to get hurt.

Just a little into disc 2 and it's getting better and better. The characters are really connecting for me. I think the stories are fine. They do seem to come a little too frequently though.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Finished up disc 1 for the night. Really wish the
funeral scene didn't require all the fetch quests, completely unnecessary, no rewards, and dragged the game down a bit. The final dungeon, while interesting, provided nothing but a filler diversion in terms of the main plot progression. Stupid Mack...

Though I'm starting to wane on the appeal of the main plotline, I am vastly intrigued on what more is revealed about Kaim. The whole immortal slant, and unearthing his experiences in the last 1000 years is quite engaging. Puts into perspective how this conflict between the nations that seems to be a major plot point probably shouldn't carry much weight to the man that has witnessed it several times over. His gruff and fearless attitude actually makes sense when considered against a Squall or Cloud or whatever...

I'm at the village of Tosca, and I think this game is getting so much praise because people are starved for JRPGs right now. And yes those are fighting words and yes I'm cruel that way.

- The Thousand Year vignettes are unintentionally funny because they're overwrought tearjerkers. They're like those disease-of-the-week movies on Lifetime distilled down into their pure form.

- The cast isn't very good. Kaim's a sulking robot. Jansen's so inept that he isn't convincing as the rakish confidence man, yet other characters act as if he is for no logical reason. Ming and Tolten are stock peerage characters. The kids clash with the plot's mature tone. Seth is cool but she has pop-up book hair. I forgive her.

- The gameplay is an antique. It uses just about every genre cliche I can think of including the use of waterspouts to block off ocean routes.

- It's yet another international relations melodrama involving a clash between realists and idealists.

- It uses the standard roll call of stale RPG fetchquests and minigames. And then there's the funeral but that's been pointed out before.

- It should be called Crying Odyssey. The characters never seem to stop crying. Thank God for Ming's general. He should be recruitable. He should be the main character. I wanna play as a black Kissinger, you jerks.

- The graphics are erratic. Some models and environments look quite nice but others look low budget.

- Why are the first two bosses the hardest ones?

+ The difficulty level serves the combat system well because it forces the player to pay attention and vary their tactics which keeps them engaged. The timed button presses also helps them to remain engaged.

+ In spite of its flaws, the plot must be doing something right because I want to see how it plays out. Ming's general better win in the end.

Well duh, you! ME was previously my favorite rpg from this gen.

That's not saying much (since ME has no competition really), but I agree. Mass Effect is the best RPG of this generation so far and probabaly my favorite western RPG ever.

I also agree we've been starved for next-gen jRPGs. I know the only one's I've played are Eternal Sonata (I loved the Chopan parts but the rest of the cliched story made me stop playing) and uhm... that's it.

Persona 3 was the last good jRPG I've played (until Lost Odyssey) and that was last generation.

We seriously need to get the word out on this game. I was put off by the reviews, but I just played it for 3.5 hours and I fucking love it.

Can someone real quick give me a list of the best types of attacks for which elements, I know they're supposed to be obvious, but not all of them are

The only way you can be starved of jrpgs, is if you're a tool who only plays them on next gen systems. Last year had plenty of good jrpgs.

Last good jRPG on last gen systems that came out was Persona 3. That was in August 2007.

I liked Blue Dragon, just never finished it. It just didn't hook me like LO did. I'll probably go back and finish after I'm done with LO.

Ming and Sarah are the only boring characters thus far

True, but they are some badass mommas when it comes to magic.

Also i found me a little power level gig on disk three go to
numara atoll island
there is a big ass bug called a hell raiser that you can fight and level up after each fight.

Have sarah cast seal so he cant spam that all-aqua spell buff your party up with all barricade. Have mack or someone with sprit magic cast powereos the (lv 5 version) on Kaim and Seth use combo with kaim and seth to do massive damage. Heal and use flare when needed.

I just now started this at LV 34 im lv 39 now and still going gonna see how far i can take this.:D

Edit: Just hit 41 exp leveling up 1 every 2 battles now. Also i just figured out shine works on this guy as well so you can blind him and seal him at the same time= he's a sitting duck:lol

I think Lost Odyssey is overall the much better of the 2 games, but that doesn't mean I don't also love Blue Dragon.

I enjoy both a great deal, but I just like Lost Odyssey even more.

Lost Odyssey is probably the better of the two games. I love Blue Dragon, though. I've played through it twice and was in the middle of a third playthrough when I got Lost Odyssey. Now I am on my second playthrough of Lost Odyssey and I am really starting to appreciate the story.

I think both games are excellent, honestly, but I can see why a lot of westerners would hate Blue Dragon for it's non-mature themes.

Blue Dragon was definitely a great game, although maybe a bit shallow and lacking in character development, challenge, and storyline. Amazing boss fight theme though. :lol I also thought it was a bit more visually consistent, and pretty good as far as that goes too.

Play till the near end of the first disc. Once things start returning, so does his personality.

The kids clash with the plot's mature tone.

No they dont. Relm and Gau didnt clash with FFVI's mature tone, and neither did Palom and Porom for FFIV...or even Ken Amada from Persona 3 for that matter (though he had issues...so not sure how good an example that was).

Jeez you guys are fast. Either some of you arent really exploring and snagging everything, or you just are really good at RPGs... I think I took a good 20 hrs for Disc 1 and 15 or so hours for Disc 2.

Someone tell me the answer to the box and lift puzzle in
Experimental Staff
(disc 2) before I put my fist through my TV.

This dungeon fucking blows. It's ugly and a pain in the ass. Dungeons like this are why I quit playing JRPGs. Ugh.

I think disk 3 has the most chapters of all disk so it should be pretty long im guessing. Disk 4 will definitely be the longest for me being i plan doing all side quest.

I'm not sure if you have to talk to the technician first but uh..
You can push the box over the edge.

I dunno. I feel like I'm snagging quite a bit. I ended up at level 20, if that helps any.

This game is so damn great.

At Numara now and just read the story of Alex, Myna and Kaim. I was left breathless with the revelation towards the end.

Absolutely amazing. This game has pulled emotion from me that I've never felt before with any game, ever.

The turn-based combat and equipment/ring system is also a lot of fun. So far, the difficulty seems to be scaling at just the right pace.

And yes, Jansen is the best.

I went back and listened to some of the cutscenes in Japanese and I think they're quite lackluster. Really one of those rare games that's better in the English dub.

I kind of dread reaching the end of LO. Fantastic thus far.

concurred....I just got to Nomura this evening before heading off to work.....

General Kaltanas (or whatever his name) is a total Douche though :lol

One thing striking about this game is its incredible art direction

...its just seems like this wonderful throwback to 16bit era Sega RPGs or something....

I'm there too and I absolutely agree. That story and the one about the solider in a tavern both had revelation/twists I wasn't expecting.

This game brings up a good point. I think I've found the perfect fusion of two mediums in these stories and I wish I could read all novels like this. Combine music, sound effects, a background image signifying what's happening in the text but being vague enough to leave it still up to the imagination. It's perfect. I would love to read something like Three Kingdoms or The Count of Monte Cristo like this.
