I'm there too and I absolutely agree. That story and the one about the solider in a tavern both had revelation/twists I wasn't expecting.

This game brings up a good point. I think I've found the perfect fusion of two mediums in these stories and I wish I could read all novels like this. Combine music, sound effects, a background image signifying what's happening in the text but being vague enough to leave it still up to the imagination. It's perfect. I would love to read something like Three Kingdoms or The Count of Monte Cristo like this.

Yeah that would be pretty nice. Even experienced the same thing I do when reading books (play out whats happening in the story in my head, with different voice actors and everything). Though we know what Kaim and Seth sound like, a little imagination goes a long way when reading the dreams.

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it

Yes, I also find that it helps pace the drama in these stories the way the words and sentences fade in with their various effects.

It's great for dramatic pauses or story revelations.

Jay Rubin has just elevated gaming as an art form more than any traditional game developer. :lol

Awesome, 5 of 7 characters I have right now are mages. It is kind of a strange design decision given the importance of your front wall.

Arent you counting Mack in the front wall too? Even if he has spirit magic, he is more bent towards melee attacks and has good amount of HP that boost the GC pretty well.

Anyway, yep its a bit strange having so many spell casting characters but actually having so many different skills and magic schools it helps to keep it dynamic and be ready to face any kind of enemies.

dionysus said:
I am also a little disappointed that Sara's cleavage doesn't live up to the outrageous cleavage of Seth and Ming's. :lol

Anyway, I think I am mostly through disk 2 and still loving it.

I´m gonna keep saying it. All character animations have a really good effort put to match their personalities, i´m really loving their movements.

Maybe Blimblim can get some footage of that, pretty please with sugar on top.

I would love that or some videos too.

While I'm having a great time with it so far, I wholeheartedly agree with this statement.

Somewhat i agree. Even if i think LO stands on its own as a very good game and has achieved crafting a distinctive place with some of its ideas, i also think its gonna be much more apreciated by more casual jrpg gamers than people that beat the crap out of every one in the ps2 where you have been able to taste any kind of flavour, great productions, traditional, innovative, crazy,...

At first I liked Mack because of Spiritual Magic, but the kid is made out of cheese cloth, can't take a hit to save his fucking life. He dies so much. If Tolten ever joins, Mack is getting the boot.

Also, how about the end to disc 2! Epic!

:lol I hope you guys know mack is a back row character even though his moves are focused on physical. Only thing i use him for is to get kaim and seth his skills. He has no real damage dealing magic and his defense & vitality is way to low to be a front row character.

So far my main has been.....

Kaim
Seth
Jansen
Ming
Sarah.

Apart from borrowing his skills I have been using him to improve the GC and cast Wall or any other if needed while kaim and seth attack.

And i dont remember his vitality being that low. I think its the 3rd highest one and near Seth.

In the long run, not being inmortal and able to learn some specific skills (recover GC & HP,etc...), it may be a problem.

I´ve been using
1)
Kaim Mack Seth
Jansen Ming

2)Kaim Seth

Considering last generation was an entirely lousy generation for RPG's, I'd sincerely doubt it. 95% of what I played, and what I've always played from the NES up were JRPG's

Getting a more stable release of SMT in the states was about the best part of last generation and I'm already sick of them. Tri-Ace/Cres had a few good to great games, but not as good as prior generation, Konami fumbled Suikoden twice, Square basically killed every single franchise they had.

Atlus's non-SMT niche releases were horrific, Wild Arms somehow managed to get worse, Dragon Quest VIII was a step backwards from Dragon Quest VII. Tales of the Abyss thankfully came back to make up for Symphonia and Legendia.

About the high points of standard RPG's were Dragon Quarter, which also killed Breath of Fire altogether and Shadow Hearts II blooming from the garbage.

Console SRPG's died out, sans Fire Emblem, unless you want Nippon Ichi pedophile math engines, the shining point of ARPG's became Dual Hearts, which is horribly sad.

So no, I don't think you'd need to be starved to really appreciate LO.

I consider myself a casual jrpg gamer (was a PCgamer only in the past) and i said that because of what some "hardcore" and experienced gamers i know have been telling from some time, considering ps2 one of the best and richest platforms lately in that department and not being very enthusiastic about LO at all. They may be wrong of course.

I would echo the Shadow Hearts love, and add that Magna Carta: Tears of Blood is probably one of the top three worst games I have ever played (killer soundtrack though).

Okay, I beat Mass Effect today (finishing moments of the game were engaging and powerful) so all that's left to complete is Tomb Raider Anniversary and the Orange Box (HL2 EP1/2), and then I'll move onto Lost Odyssey.

I simply gave seth the pickpocket ring, any "perfect" is a big fat chance to steal the item, much better than the skill.

And yeah, no problem for another forum.

Wouldnt ask for videos at all with entire dreams but some other shots from different ones (kaim concept art and some different backgrounds, with the different tonalities/settings of greens, reds,..) would be great.

Thanks

Personally, I really think they nailed the action camera angles in this game. Simple attacks feel so much more epic with the roadie cam right before the simple, yet awesome attack. Same goes for moving magic cam and everything inbetween. Even the enemy attack/magic camera angles feel epic. My only wish for this game was to have more interactivity with the ring system with something akin to Shadow Hearts or even timing multiple attacks a la SMRPG with all the actions except for items of course. Besides that, I really feel this has been an excellent return to form to the turn-based rpg system.

Cheers, I couldn't agree with you more. There is something really amazing about how they put together the dream sequences, and that combination of visuals and audio really creates the perfect storm.

Agree regarding the emotions the game pulls as well. So incredible! Yay LO <3 <3

<3 Seth too. Somebody mentioned it earlier in the thread, but the bare back was a great design choice. I can't think of any other videogame character that has a bare back like that (besides DOA girls...). Can anyone correct me on that?

It's all personal opinion of course, but LO really clicked hard with me. Probably the most downright giddy I've been about an RPG since the great flood of 2000 (VS, CC, VP, FFIX).

Last gen had a glut of "good" RPG's, (trying to make a well rounded top five for me would be Suiko V, TotA, SH2, P3, BOF5), it's just that nothing (to me) was really as piss your pants, firing on all cylinders awesome as it could've been. Several franchises really crumbled or just stagnated, and there was just so much "playing it safe".

The only handicap I'd give it, is that I was a massive Dragon Warrior/Final Fantasy nerd when I was a kid. The FF portion started to fade around the start of the PSone titles, sans FFIX which was like glorious, but short lived rebirth to me.

Getting basically what is Final Fantasy X done right WITHOUT FUCKING TETSUYA NOMURA thrills me to no end, really, god this game makes me hate Nomura even more than before. I am a bitter, bitter individual. But you know what, that's ok, because there's no assholes named after weather, with spiky hair, making goofy faces at the camera whilst wearing a shirt made entirely of belts.

Brandon F

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Cute. Flipping through the optional bosses to fight in the endgame within the guide I noticed one of them is labeled as
Blue Dragon

The FFX comparisons are very apt, but I still liked the way that game handled turn order and character switching over LO. Still, Kaim is far more endearing a character than Tidus could ever be.

As for the junkiness of last gen RPG's, I nearly wondered if I merely outgrew or outcared the niche genre in the PS2 era. When I found myself passing up purchasing the last few Wild Arms, Suikodens, and even when VP2 couldn't hold interest, I assured myself that the honeymoon was over.

Or maybe not...DQ8 I adored(worse than DQ7 how?), FFXII(Goty 2006), SO3(suck it haters), Abyss(Symphonia am cry), Dragon Quarter(one of the genre's finest), and DDS(it's all about the dungeons and combat). Maybe I was just kidding myself...hell Blue Dragon was addictive fun despite it's pithy plot and characterization.

Lost Odyssey seemed to arrive with perfect timing, Crowded march is a healthy few weeks away, and there is literally nothing like it on competing consoles right now, nor will there be for awhile.

Euugh... I'm loving LO but the character design is far and away the weakest link here. There's enough needless ornamentation going on here that it makes Lulu's belt dress seem practical. Ming should be tried for crimes against humanity.

Which really bums me out because I frickin' love Inoue, and his involvement was one of the things that most attracted me to the game.

I just can't fucking believe that the Xbox 360 has more JRPGS than the PS3 and Wii :lol . Fuck, at this pace it will become the best JRPG machine of this generation since I don't care much about the Final Fantasy series (after 8 it went to the shithole with me).

Oh well, I am now in that
Flying ship with the Queen in there.
. The soldier scene with Jansen was fucking awesome =P. Anything cool coming up in the next hour or two of gameplay? I've hit 5 hours and 21 minutes so far with disc 1. I love, LOVE, this game :D

djtiesto

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
8 hours in and it's fantastic so far... love the Thousand Year Dreams, reminds me of those old SFC visual novel games (like Radical Dreamers), and are a nice way to further develop the surround world and its history... I just wish that some of the events were more interactive. Maybe in a potential LO2? The game also has good music, fun battles... shame that I hear the first few bosses are the hardest (I had to do a bit of grinding to beat the bird on the mountaintop) and the rest of the game is cake :(

I love how fast Kaim runs. Looking forward to putting some more time into it next weekend. So far this is probably the best of the 360 RPGs, and I absolutely loved BD as well.

I cherish both eras. PSX era has more of my favorite jrpgs, but PS2 era isn't so bad either. There was still tons of great jrpgs to find and play.
they were indeed but most of the great rpgs were SMT/digital devil saga, Baten Kaitos, BOFV, Valkyrie Profile 2 and SRPGs like Disgaea which i am not too fond of.

ps1 "simple" rpgs like lunar and ff7 were much better for me, this is my personal opinion anyway.

This game is awesome. I started playing Saturday morning and did not stop the whole weekend. I am now on disk 3 and had a couple of questions...
1st. are there any secret bosses?
2nd. how do I find them?
3rd. Are the dreams in order? If so can i go back to get them?
4th. Weapons...why are they so scarce and what are the best ones? Rings/Accessories?

I know I am asking a lot...any help is appreciated. thanks.

Is this a dream? I think I missed it. Where do I find it?

In the town of Numara, the screen before you go over the bridge and help those kids out to find the balloon, gondola and doll. There's a little staircase leading down to a gondola launch and two men and a woman standing there talking. Initiate a conversation with them and it'll trigger the dream. Well worth it.

Cant really be anymore descriptive than that since I cant quite figure out exactly how to tell you where it was.

Hrmm...I know where you're talking about. I thought those stairs were blocked though? I'll have to go back and check that.

EDIT: Just to clarify, you're talking about the staircase that's opposite of the save point before the bridge? There's also an artist home/center you can walk into right there.

Yeah, had a hard time too. Got through it on the first go, but was within an inch of dying for a while.

If you dont mind me asking, what are u buying? I've only had to restock on some healing and mp items now and then... I might have bought a cple of accessories as well. But i barely spend any money at all. Am i missing a super secret store somewhere where they sell the badass weapons or something?

Also, i kinda wish there was more equipment, armors, etc.

At Numara now and just read the story of Alex, Myna and Kaim. I was left breathless with the revelation towards the end.

Absolutely amazing. This game has pulled emotion from me that I've never felt before with any game, ever.

The turn-based combat and equipment/ring system is also a lot of fun. So far, the difficulty seems to be scaling at just the right pace.

And yes, Jansen is the best.

I went back and listened to some of the cutscenes in Japanese and I think they're quite lackluster. Really one of those rare games that's better in the English dub.

I kind of dread reaching the end of LO. Fantastic thus far.
I noticed this too... thing is I don't even speak Japanese to understand it well, but it just didn't "feel" right in comparison to the tons of Japanese shows I've watched.

No he's talking about on that road before the next area, there's a little dock along the way. I believe it's right across from the item shop. BTW, I liked all the little secrets there, like how to get the chests across the river and the hidden shop.

Maybe it's just me, but the Attack ring sort of reminds me of Legend of Dragoon. Of course I haven't played that since it first came out...

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
There are a lot of easilly missed dreams I've noticed. In the first town of Ulma(?) you'll need to visit the tavern at least 3 times consecutively to unlock multiple dreams with each revisit. Not lost forever if you don't, but unless you know, it might be a long while before you see all three unless you exit and re-enter multiple times early in disc 1. I wouldn't have if not pointed out.

Before heading to the Crimson Forest after finishing the events in the Ghost Town area, there is a hidden one if you sidetrack back to Numara and visit the bridge section. Though this one can easilly be earned right away in Disc 2 post-Crimson Forest when you revisit the town.

I'm also pretty sure I missed a few seeds in that town because they are very difficult to notice and don't shine brightly to pick. I REALLY hope the auction house has the missing ones later. I want all my Pipot jar rewards damnit!
