Going by a lot of the posts people seem to think the game is good because the 1000 year-stories. How does the game stand on it's own? I don't want to read a book.

You know, at first I thought the same as you. However the first one caught me, a great read. It's not like they are a long read. As for the game itself, I'm having a blast. The fact that there are random battles don't bother me as much as they are not like the FF of old where it seemed like every sixth step was a random encounter. That being said you will die, oh yes you will. Especially if your party is ill equipped.

I am really getting fucking annoyed (Disc 2 Spoilers)
at that fucking black cave bull shit. I'm (hopefully) right at the end and I was fighting those walking green things. I beat a couple of them then they show me a red one on the map. I run towards him and all of a sudden get in a random battle even though they have green dudes on the map running around?! I had absolutely no health, and then when I beat those 4 green monsters in that first battle, i press "Y" as quickly as possible... but it's not quick enough. I end up in battle with the red boss bitch with no health or MP and i get raped. So i gotta do the whole thing over...
. Those are the types of moments that piss me off.

Always heal everything up at near the end of the battle. And yes thats all you need to do, but seriously in a multiple battle boss fight, always try to have your people reasonably safe near the end of each battle.

In what way?

If I liked say Final Fantasy X but not VIII will I like LO (without reading the 1000 year-stories)?

The game is fun as hell and a great story on its own, but you NEED to read the stories to get the full experience. Have you seen how they are presented? Its not just scrolling text on a white or black background. Its still pretty visual even though you have to read. And the audio effects + music really draw you in.

Thats just like playing classic Sonic without trying to get all chaos emeralds...or playing a Megaman game without trying to find the boss weaknessess/ X's Armors in the X series. You just dont get the full experience.

If the main draw is something I don't want to do then it's probably not for me. Might give it a shot later on when it's not full price, though.

I don't understand why people want to skip the stories, its easily one of the main draws.

I guess people are really lazy or easily bored when a lot of words show up on the screen. Reading in an RPG? Who would have thought that would have ever happened?

But you see it's not the main draw, it just adds to the story line, you're not forced in any way to read through them while you play.

How do you know you dont want to do it? You dont HAVE to read em, you can skip them actually since they dont really have any bearing on the main story...except a few. However, you wont know if you like this feature unless you actually read one. Alot of people thought it would be lame, then they read the first one and were sold from there on out.

Someone get this guy a decent quality youtube video of a 1000 year dream.

I was thinking about typing some of them out, but I'm WAY too lazy to do that right now.

When I unlocked the first dream and saw the text coming, I was like ugh.. but then I read a few lines and was pulled into the story. The presentation is very simple, but the way the words flow and the subtle background sounds give a dream-like mood. I really feel that if I had skipped the dreams, I wouldn't be getting much in terms of character development.

Also the game seems to have a more FFVII+FFX vibe, with FFVIII's minimalist menus.

Oh and if you havent played any FF games before VIII, you really should. Specifically IV and VI.

Is it just me or is Gongora one of the lamest looking and acting villains in a long time?

I just can't help but laugh when I see the guy, he acts horribly goofy and he always raises his eyebrows when he talks and he always flails his arms around.

His voice actor isn't very good either so overall I can say he's a pretty lame guy...

Oh and for you people who are very far in the game (disc 4)

WTF is up with that lady in waiting in Numara! Holy shit her face is disturbing! I don't even know if she's supposed to be human... very weird character model!

Jap-gaffers, please help me. What is this neat little thing on the Japanese marketplace? From it's size, it looks like a gamerpic but no - and not a key to some new feature as well.

Bonus item 2 pack

Downloaded last week but not sure yet what items it includes and how can you get them in the game.

Thank you very much. I hope that the DLC will be released outside of Japan as well. It's the only thing I would pay for in terms of average DLC.

This needs to be repeated: it's not the main draw! The stories are awesome though, and unless you're allergic to reading, you definitely should take the time to read them. But they can, if you prefer, easily be ignored. Think of it as great additional content. Not buying the game because it includes stories that you can (optionally) read would be ridiculous.

The item on the Japanese marketplace is a accessory called Master's secret script. And gives you weapon guard 2 (100sp), which in essential guards half of all attacks, making the game a peace of cake.

In Australia we got a code for pre-orders that let us download that, I thought in the US it was the same?

And it also included a new Dream of a Thousand Years.

In the UK, some stores are running a pre-order special for the game that includes a special weapon and a free level (which has to be the stupidest idea for an RPG promotion, but what the heck).

But you guys are talking about a skill, not a weapon. So maybe Europe is getting the shaft it usually does.

Oh wow. That makes the wait even harder - it's arrived, along with my wireless adaptor, but they're asking for £20 ($40!) in customs!! Fuckers.
Where'd you order it from?

I usually skip the stories to read when I get to an inn or something. When I am in the middle of doing something I don't like to stop and mess up the flow, so I'll read them when I'm done with the task at hand. I never skip em, but I don't always read em when they come up either.

Man, disc 3 is all kinds of awesome. It does the Two Towers schtick so well- no dead time, interesting scenarios, awesome bosses. Played 5 hours over the day.

Can I use it with my current savegame? I've downloaded it with my japanese profile, but I use my UK one for gaming.

I don't understand the reviews for this game (or Blue Dragon). Mistwalker has produced (IMO) two high quality traditional RPG's that take me back to some of the greatest games I played in past generations. Lost Odyssey is no exception, and I find that I'm liking the mature storyline a little more than Blue Dragon's lighthearted affair. The dramatic acting in some of the cutscenes in Lost Odyssey is some pretty moving stuff, along with the excellent 1000 Years of Dreams short stories.

If I had one critique, it would apply to both of Mistwalker's games and any Japanese RPG in general. JRPG's desperately need to incorporate a dialogue system ala Mass Effect to help immerse you in the world and feel like your actions have weight and consequences. Other than that, bring on the sequels!

Just download the free stuff from japanese marketplace and it will be in your inventory. Doesn't matter if it isn't the same account.

Also I need to give a big thumbs down to MS. I can not believe how crappy their discdrives are and how lousy the OS is that if the disc skips one beat (which I can in fact hear since the drive is so loud) It gives you a DRE. Hate retracing, especially when its a mace like enlightenment. Xbox360s sucks, games don't

All of the forums I visit tend to absolutely gush over it, I've sold three friends on it's purchase, all of them love it, the reviews are nothing short of mind boggling and this game above just about anything is pretty much the best example of "trust your instincts" when game purchasing I can think of.

Like I might have answered a bit vaguely before, yes you can use your savegames from a different account and still get the item in your inventory.

Funny. Why buy the game? Most (j)RPGs are just interactive books with battles that you you control.

I just got Sed (wasn't Cid the guy in all the FF's? ...Sed in all LO's?) and did the mission when you just get him...ok he is pure awesome aside from his opening line. He is the character I have been waiting for in this game...also his double SP skill is great...I learned all of Toltens skills and 5 of Seds in that dungeon alone. :D

Just nod if this happens on Disk 2.

JUST NOD.

OK I'm only 3 hours in but my first reaction is I want books to be released on marketplace in the "Dream of a Thousand Years"(?) format.:lol
The text, audio and subtle visuals are outstanding.

Anybody else use that little beach area (accessible near begining of disc 2) to level their characters up harcore? I did.
All thats there to fight is the silver guys that flee all the time and those huge beach creatures. If you can kill one of them though, you level up one level everytime. You can do this till your characters reach level 49. :D

So, I'm part way through the third disc
about to go chase after the kids after they hijacked the train
, and I've got a minor problem. I'm missing the first (like, the one in the top left corner, Level1-1) Spirit spell. I tried to see if I could get it at the Auction House, but all that came up after 10-15 tries was healing items :( Advice?

Dern. I was really hoping I'd have a full party by the end of disk two.
Don't worry...the end of disk two is where it really starts to pick up and become bad ass. I am worried I am closing in on disk 4 too fast...hopefully there are tons of things to do on disk for to keep me occupied for a while :D

Every time I reach a new moment or pass a dungeon I'm like "*sniff*....that much closer....to the end...."

One thing, just so I'm prepared in terms of skills:

Is there any kind of Aeris moment where I lose access to a character and their skills (or ability to learn skills) permanently? And if so, when? Don't tell me who, I'll just make sure I have a save point before that point and/or have gotten everyone as leveled as humanly possible by then.

Thanks!

Nothing permanent, but still...
