I find that I am disappointed by how this game turned out.
I loved it at first. The idea of the emotional repercussions of being immortal and having to deal with everything that comes along with that was fascinating. The dreams were great, and I was really drawn in and emotionally invested in the characters & storyline. Then, over the course of discs 2, 3, & 4, it just becomes more & more generic until, by disc 4, it's just fighting the evil dude that wants to rule the world. It also suffers from the Gears Of War type storytelling, where I played through it and got this impression of things going on at Mistwalker/Epic:
"Ok, the game has gone gold & shipped."
"Excellent."
"Oh shit, sir, we just realized we forgot to include vital plot points #12, #18, and #32."
"Um...that's fine. We'll let the player fill in the blanks."
Often times I had no idea why I was going where I was going next. I just went along with it because that was the direction the game funneled me in, reminiscent of my thinking "Why the fuck did I just hop on this train?" in Gears. There was alot that was unexplained by the time the credits were rolling. Personally, I don't mind vague storytelling. I love it in a game like Half Life 2, because the whole game is shrouded in mystery. However, in Lost Odyssey, constant exposition was a recurring theme, so when plot points were left out it was even more jarring.
All in all, I still view the game favorably. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone starved for a good JRPG, a genre that is admittedly suffering a drought this generation. However, the potential is there for this game to be amazing, yet it never transcends "just good".
