Sucks too that there is seemingly no greater mystery to solve from the 1000 years entries. Unless things turn around, this game laid out all of its cards early in disc 2, and now it's just going through the motions of 3/4 to the obvious finale...
Almost makes me hate this game more because of Lost Potential...
How many Crystal Fragments are there in the Crimson Forest? I found 18, but I remember someone in the town asking me to bring him 19. And wtf is that boulder for?
Yeah, like I said before, the story gets really bad in the last disc. It was pretty terrible in the first few discs imo, but not unlike any other Japanese RPG out there for the most part. Then, right near the end, things literally cease making sense and I had no idea what anyone was saying or doing or what I was even trying to do.
There were also several times starting on disc 3 where characters would have long conversations in cutscenes where I'd have to take off my headphones because the script was so ridiculous. I couldn't bring myself to skip cutscenes because I literally have to watch them or else I feel I haven't played through the game properly (just one of those tics I have as a gamer). For instance, when Kaim and Sarah are talking to the King of Gohtza in that abandoned room in Low Town - horrible. Worse than horrible.
And I still like it too, yeah. I had lots of fun with it. I just wish that they'd get proper writers on these games because not even Tara Strong could make this script work like a real human being is saying these words.
I'm confused about the penguin in ice area. Strategy guide says to get chest and slide down first icy slope from the way you came and he should be there. But he's not and in a cave at bottom of map and I can't click on him. What am I missing here?

Seriously, I can't think of one with better writing, other than maybe Persona 3... but even that one fails the "imagine a real human being saying these words" test.
And well now that the big stuff went down I'm going to pst some impressions about this game.
Lets just say I'm a big FFX fan and I was really intersted in this game because of the impressions saying LO was basicly FFX-3.
Well I'm kinda meh on the whole thing. The story just is'nt there. The characters are'nt boring and the dialogue between them is good. Its just I don't feel theres a big point to them. The immoratols are all about how they lost memories well thats all fine and dandy but it really dosen't set up an intersting conflict. What darma do they have other then trying to get their memories. Kaim is just a brooding guy with really nothing to do but save the world. He is already a guy who has seen everything(as detailed in the dreams) and the story happening to him now really dosen't have any effect on him. He really doesn't seem to grow that much and well thats really an important part for a story like this. Seth is cool but other then that.....what is there. Jansen is a cool guy but he still seems the same, he just loves Ming now. Speaking of Ming, pretty much everyone outside of Tolten just seems to be there(don't know about Sed yet). Perhaps a redemption story between Kaim and Gongora would have been better.
The battle system is cool but it seems that you can easily just abuse it and make the immortals gods.
Strategy guide says you're supposed to let an Elmon steal it.(Regular encounter) It will automatically steal it once you get in a battle. Than you're supposed to visit the Elmon leader.(He'll now be wearing it on his head) The version he is wearing is Mind Bangle.(MP max up 2) Than fight him make sure mages have anti-seal on. And steal it back from the leader. And no Elmon will steal from you again if you win the fight. Respect+1
THIS BLOCK PUZZLE IS DRIVING ME INSANE. IVE MANAGED TO TALK TO THE DUDE UP ON THE TOP LEVEL, AND HE TELLS ME TO GO TO GUY ON BOTTOM AND IF ANYTHINGS IN MY WAY TO THROW IT AWAY, BUT I CANT THROW IT AWAY OMG AHHHHHHHHHH

Push off crate(or whatever it is), than hit switch for platform to come down. Drag second crate to the spot first one was hit platform up and push crate. Than hit platform back down and there you go.
I might do the same soon, im in the mood for an S/RPG and FFXII Revenant Wings ain't giving me the satisfaction I need Though I still have Persona 3, Grim Grimoire, and even Odin Sphere :'( (Trust me, thats not all) see what I mean

I'm still loving this game yet I haven't loaded it up over the past couple of nights. I just finished Disc 3 and I just figured that I'm near the end game section so i figured that I would take a bit of a break. I'll pick it up again tonight and attempt to get all of the sidequests out of the way before the final battle.
The scene at the end is rather nice even if a bit cheesy.
Btw, i reviewed the dreams that i havent unlocked yet and there are few left even if i´m just at Ghotza low town (theres still plenty of gameplay untill the end i suppose).
I'm stuck trying to finish off the Treasure Trove achievement, but I think I'll let it go. I've already combed over all areas of the game several times each trying to track down all the skills and magic spells, and I'm just sick of looking for a needle in this particular haystack. Seriously, by the time I started caring about the last few seeds to collect, I could almost pinpoint exactly where I needed to go to look for them because of how much/little time I spent there previously. I will have to strangle someone if I get sent back to the Deathtrap of Enlightenment one more goddamned time, as well.
I got too strong a Shadow Hearts vibe from LO, which pushed me into drawing out my time with it almost two-fold. I don't know if it's the descriptive NPC names, the borderline ring fetishism (I was really expecting a cameo from the Judgment Ring at some point), the map menu, or the magic spells or something... But I saw far too much SH in this game for my own good and got all sentimental about it.
I have...hours of dreams ahead of me to read. I hate that I fell behind on those, because I think they would've made an even stronger impact if I read them right when they were made available. The significance of
Ming's
was almost lost on me because of such a huge gap in time between when it was triggered and when I read it. I would've read them immediately if I wasn't often playing while sleepy or fearing my 360 would do something stupid and cost me an hour or so of progress. Anyway, I enjoyed the first few I've read so far and I'm looking forward to the rest -- just as soon as I put on a pot of coffee.
Jansen, I wanted dead by the end of the first boss fight. I still do, but I probably would've written off this entire cast of characters without him. Kaim spent everything he had on his daughter, apparently.
Sarah started off strong as "OMG
Psychobitch
!" and even the monsters were all "Yeah, we'll just take an upstairs room and let you
chill
down here in the basement." But, she became just way too mellow after Kaim showed up. Read as much into that as you want to. Ming's...
veins
were almost as distracting as her
Samurai Slut
outfit. I'd forget Tolten was even there until his
armor blinded me
in cutscenes and, as far as I'm concerned, he was only birthed to provide Kaim with Age of the Kings. Cooke and Mack were actually pretty decent together. They're
CHILDREN
, you self-hating jerks. They're supposed to be curious, naive, mischievous, bratty, and all the things YOU THINK YOU WEREN'T AS A CHILD. I was a little cold to Seth at first, but then she kept scorning and kicking Jansen and made me a fan. Sed rocked straight out of the gate and right through the finish line, despite my hang-ups with the how things went at the Tower of Mirrors.
"Momma!"
I guess I can be a little more appreciative of having Tolten around for Sed to take condescending swipes at.
As far as playable characters go, the highs balance out the lows, I suppose.
Other than Crimson Forest and maybe the first temple, the dungeons were largely "miss" for me. I appreciate their brevity, but that's about it. Too many caves, too many fucking earth tones, too much industrial shit, and not nearly enough tripped-out fantasy aesthetic to feed my imagination. Just when I thought I'd get my wish with
The Tower of Mirrors
, I got denied and rejected so very hard. I just finished Mass Effect and was looking for a larger contrast in visuals, and it ended up being disturbingly similar in places. Also, I just finished Eternal Sonata, which had one of the most gorgeous sewers I've ever seen in an RPG, among other really eye-popping fantasy settings. I guess my expectations were misplaced, but I'll likely forget what this game looks like in about a month.
My only real complaint is that it took too long for things to pick up. Didn't get nice and good until Disc 3, and I was at the 30h mark when shit got real. My finish time was a little over 100h, which should give some indication how much I liked the game after getting over the hump. Too bad I broke the gameplay from doing the sidequests, though. Absolutely broke it off. My magic users were just staff-whipping enemies in the last couple of dungeons, they were so overpowered. Everyone just absorbed anything thrown at them. The only thing I had to actually be mindful of was the last Backyard fight, which only surprisingly took two retries before I was done and done with it. But, L-O-L at that damn thing one-hit-killing my Lv. 99s...repeatedly...in the same turn. Oh, and Nightmare Kelolons. Holy shit, them things hurt.
Gongora went through all that trouble, when he should've just employed three of those damned Kelos and probably would've won
. Speaking of which, did anyone else run into Black Kelolons? I only saw one, once, and then nothing but Nightmares from then on. Shit, if I had known it was like that, I would've just left that one Black Kelolon alone.
Overall, I have no problem recommending the game as long as you resolve to make it to disc 3 before passing judgment. After I finish reading A Thousand Years of Dreams, I'm soooooo done. I've played this one into the ground.
Yea, I've been bypassing the 1000 YoD entries lately,
but I did randomly decide to watch Seth's when they popped up, which made the final cutscene of Disc 2 actually make sense...I mean if you didn't read the story about her, Gongora and Aneira, how could that little discussion have made much sense?
.
I really need to keep up to date with them as I find them.
I agree Attack You, I'm 75 hours into it and I've been trying to find 2 last seeds and can't find them and I'm fed up at this point. I haven't beat the game yet but to me the story was borderline boring. I enjoyed toward the end of Disk 1 and everything else is pretty much unmemorable.
But I have put a lot of time into it and most of that has been sidequests but those have burnt me out and now I just want to finish the game.

Yeah, I've played lots of jrpgs. That's partly why I'm sick of the terrible writing - all of them have it and when people call the writing in a game like Lost Odyssey good, nothing's ever going to improve.

See, I couldn't even tell you where to begin looking for them, either. They hooked us up with a treasure locator; could've done good by us with a seed locator, too.
I knew where my last few were with startling accuracy, though -- places where I knew I didn't poke around and just rushed through. Uhra, the Ipsilon Mtns., and Black Cave were pretty much my last 11 seeds.
The right tank must die first. Equip Machine Killer rings on your physical attackers. Make sure you have plenty of items to heal and a back row that knows your highest level white magic. Fight should be easily doable.
Was stuck there for a while. All-barricadus helped againt the mega canon blast thing from the main tank. I also went ahead and had my immortals learn resistance to fire, altho i'm not sure how much that helped. Also had all-shieldus up, which helped againt the ramming.
Even then, i had to get sed to dble feed healing items for most of the fight.

I think I'm either going to shelve or trade in the game. It's been a lot of fun mostly, despite the occasional frustration from the placement of save points. I'm at the point where it's getting a little too difficult for me (me = RPG noob), plus, I'm at the first boss of the 4th disc and it feels a little too stretched out for my liking.
On a side note, OH MY GOD BIRDIE, your latest avatar makes me want to cry my heart out, but in a omg-i-found-you-after-all-these-years-and-i'm-sorry-and-love-you kind of way.

I may do the same. =( Never mind the dirty disk errors.
I've put in 26 hours so far. I'm just losing interest, especially with the difficulty.
Before this turns into the LO Grow a Pair Defence Force remember like WDYS I am also an RPG noob more or less. The grinding to up my characters in an attempt to hide my noobness in boss battles is getting a little old.

I dont think the game is THAT difficult even for RPG noobs. I have also played few JRPGs and havent had problems with LO and didnt need to "grind" at all, at least for now, i´m in the 3rd disc.
I think i had more problems with FFX than LO and that one is considered one of the easiest in the saga.
I can get the benefit of liking to explore every corner and having a slow pace but specially in this game with its leveling system you dont need to grind and if you do that with the sidequest/bosses is gonna become rather easy with your characters overpowered as Attack You has said above.
Have your 2 imortal mages casting covera on everybody in turn, have 2 imortals and someone else with a powerful attack in the front row with machine killer rings, kill the right tank first. once everyone has covera, have your mages repeatedly cast zephyr or zephyra even if its not needed, because by the time they get around to casting, it might be.
I have to admit I'm not reading the short stories anymore. I work full time so I only have 1 or 2 hours to play at night so I don't want to waste my playtime reading the stories. Hopefully I'm will not miss too much by not reading the short stories.
