I have to admit I'm not reading the short stories anymore. I work full time so I only have 1 or 2 hours to play at night so I don't want to waste my playtime reading the stories. Hopefully I'm will not miss too much by not reading the short stories.

It's the same w/ me. I've read a few, but I think I'll just come back to them later on when I have more free time.

Yeah, I finally won that fight. Now I guess I've kind of got the run of the world now.

As far as the dreams go, I think it's pretty clear which ones are directly story-related. I read those immediately and then pass on the optional ones for now.

Got the game today. I'm only 5 hours in but I'm absolutely loving it. The game is not without flaws but it's fantastic regardless. The English voice acting is actually really good which is quite the shocker after that pile of shit called Blue Dragon. Story has been fairly interesting thusfar and the thousand year dreams are well written and tell nice and touching stories. I like how they give some more insight into Kaim's past.

Ooh and Jansen is hilarious, unlike that terrible comic relieve character Marumaro in Blue Dragon.

Okay 3 tanks down. Shit just got realz! But now it looks like explore, kills and blah before hitting up the final boss. Sweetness.

I just started playing this and the game has locked up on me 3 times during the loading screens when going to a differnet area. =P

So far its ok, I just wish I had full camera control. Its like walking around with a neck-brace.

No matter how many times I see that scene where Cooke and Mack
bring you to their sick mother who turns out to be Kaim's daughter Lirium whom you read about in an earlier thousand years of dreams story and assumed to definitely be dead
I'll never get over it.

You just didn't expect that to come into the play the way it did. The scene still gets me everytime.

This game is definitely one of my favorite jrpgs ever. Basically the game's take on how it feels story should be handled just feels really different from a lot of jrpgs I've played. I love the serious focus on the characters.

Most jrpgs you have people that join the adventure and come along for the ride and sometimes their coming along seems like an excuse to have more in your party well Cooke and Mack's reason, for sure, has to be one of the best reasons I've seen for 2 people to join your party.

I suspected I would get more out of this game with the USA release and I'm pleased to say that I truly am. I'm happy to hear that they expect to franchise this bad boy :)

Meh. Disc 4. Three tanks. Busting my balls. Tips please.

Cannon first, Kakkana tank next. Save the other two tanks for later. I just beat that area, no one in my group is higher than 42.

nevermind.

I'm about to head the the last area, for those who have finished the game, bout how long will it take?

I'm sure people have said this, but it looks like I fall into the category of those who feel incredibly blessed/spoiled by having played Oblivion/Mass Effect (or any other decent RPG with real-time combat.) Turn-based, random battles are dead to me and Lost Odyssey has confirmed that beyond any kind of redemption. It's competent in most respects, but I still feel it sucks (to me.)

I think to a larger extent the "strategy" of turn-based is so minimal in the context of its gameplay that it doesn't fit anymore. I can't seem to come up with any reasonable/logical benefits for it, and I think the subjective reasoning is almost entirely due to the nostalgia factor of past RPGs. Same goes with random encounters; there is no need for them other than to grind up, but because I tend to play SP games for the story, all they do is get in the way, serving more as a frustration inducer since they impede my progress massively.

The whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The juxtaposition of enjoying the story/characters (Jansen) and the concept, while still hating the game is really awkward. I just don't want to waste my time on it anymore.

I see where you're coming from, but I think you just didn't play it long enough, Rogue5. You still have to do a little grinding -- it's par for the course -- but it's not as much as most other jRPGs. I recommend that you level up enough to be able to blaze through the random encounters so they become less of a burden. At that point you'll probably like it more (not Mass-Effect-more, just more than you apparently do -- maybe even enough to finish it.)

Anyways regarding Disc 2: I think it's biggest problem is that the Mansion/Cave dungeons occur right after the other, with nothing fleshing anything out. I really liked the last dungeon, but even that came too fast. Seth's dreams are *really* freaking good, probably my favorite yet, and when Jansen or Cooke actually get to do something they are great. But yea, there's not a whole lot going on outside the dungeons.

I didn't think anyone would notice, and figured posting it would make it official...y'know, to convince myself that it was sound advice.

...Regardless, I did make a good point.

The game is awesome an worth it, but your grinding point is moot. Level caps mean the encounters stay about the same, difficulty wise. Disc 4 ramps up a bit, I think.

This thread has died off pretty quickly.

Anyway, I'm trying to get a chest in the Power Station on disc 2. Its sorta right after you enter the building. You walk a little bit to a ladder that takes you down to a circular platform. There's a chest across a drop off I can't get to. Every so often a cargo crate glides through the drop off. Y'all know where I'm talking about? Any help?

I saw that post of yours that you quoted -- and, responded to -- earlier in the thread and thought about responding to it, but thought you moved on. Boy, do I have egg on my face!

I'm still somewhat unreasonably hard on traditional turn-based RPGs. I had my fill of them in the Saturn/PS1 era and all but shunned them from Grandia onward. Only when SMT:N and DQ8 rolled around did I find myself re-evaluating my stance on them. The way I reckoned it was "Shit, why the hell not... It's been a few years. I've gained some more perspective on what makes good gameplay. Lemme see if I can find the fun again." And in these seemingly primitive turn-based systems, I see a kind of balance and fine-tuning coming from years of tinkering with such a traditional battle system that I can't quite find in more action-oriented ones. I still prefer the less traditional battle systems by a country mile, though.

Just got this today, and loving it so far. Brings back some nostalgia since the last game that I played that was similar to this was FF9. (tried 10 but didn't like it). I love the art style, and the more mature/adult oriented story and characters. Great music too.

I got the game on the first day but only played it for a few hours due to trying to clear out some of my backlog. Just finished disk 1 and the more I play the more I am enjoying it. The item you get for pre-ordering is incredibly broken when maxed out on Kaim and Seth:lol

Why are you guys having problems with this game after the first three bosses? I'm near the end and it’s been a breeze. I’ve barely done any side quests and I haven’t used any items really except for mana refills.

All you need to do with the stronger bosses is have two party members alternate casting area effect healing spells. Normally the spells take two turns to cast, so if you have two members alternate casting them, you'll always have one cast near the beginning of a combat round. Then just use gamble if don't feel like being clever.

I already loved it but now I am madly in love with it. I'm now 9 hours in and
I just had Lilum's funeral
. Easily one of the most emotional experiences in a videogame yet. The story has been fantastic so far especially the story of Kaim's past. The English voiceacting has been nothing short of amazing aswell (perhaps with the exception of Mack).

Yeah, I've played lots of jrpgs. That's partly why I'm sick of the terrible writing - all of them have it and when people call the writing in a game like Lost Odyssey good, nothing's ever going to improve.

People have a warped sense of what constitutes good writing when it comes to video games. The bar has been set so low, any time a story comes across as at least mildly comprehensible people want to heap praise on it. This irritates me. While Lost Odyssey was at least partially coherent in its narrative, I still don't think it is anywhere near what we should be calling "good writing."

Dont worry about it for now.

You´ll come across it and be able to put your hands on when you have finished everything else in there.

try looking near that stone that says something like this: THIS RUIN IS SACRED BLAHBLAHBLAH, you know? near the elevator.

it's hidden in the corner away from the camera, very tricky one.

For those trying the Backyard battles, the

is really annoying.

If I were you, I'd start by tackling some of the sidequests. There are a ton of optional things to do that will net you some awesome items and enhancements.

I started in Uhra, but you can start wherever you want.

I'm nearing the end of the first disk now and blimey, this game is good. Daaaamn good. I'm a rather jaded gamer and all but this game actually manages to involve me in the story, atleast so far. I can't wait to see what the other disks hold!

To echo what's already been said, you should take the time to do most, if not all, of the sidequests the game has to offer. Not only will you learn some good spells that help you greatly along the way, but you'll also net some accessories that make things a hell of a lot easier on your half. Doing Tolten's Royal Seal Sidequest will teach him his final skill which helps you a lot.

The
Great Ancient Ruins
are located at the bottom right island at the top. Submerge into the ocean with the Nautilus and look for a cave you can pass through then emerge when prompted. Just know that the boss there is a pain.

So I finally got to play the game on a surround sound system. The battle theme really, really comes alive in surround. I already thought it was absolutely superb, but the mixing really makes it a legendary battle theme that I am pretty sure is going to be remembered for a very long time. It's so game-appropriate...it has this big boastful sound to start, but the entire song is kind of infected with this twinge of sadness, of tiredness-- you can kind of feel Kaim's general apathy and disappointment with life and battle in general.

It's not overproduced or sampled poorly like FFX's battle theme, and it doesn't really evoke any nostalgic feeling for any of the older Final Fantasies. To me it's just a completely original, well composed, well sampled piece that is simultaneously haunting and encouraging.

It's really, really beautiful.

There is so much stuff to do with disc 4 sidequests. It's a lot to keep track of, but I do enjoy them. It's a very Shadow Hearts-ish structure to them, too.

Damn it, Disc 4 is a nightmare. Can anyone help me with the
tank
boss battle? The
ancient egyptian thing and the demon dinosaur things
were frustrating enough, but I seriously have no idea what to do here.
Game logic says to go for the support tanks first, but it doesn't seem to matter which target I go for. He always manages to fire off two full charge cannons in 3 turns or less, which is enough to down my entire party. How am I supposed to beat this? Most of my party members are around level 41-42, am I supposed to grind?

I'm in the Grand Staff fighting the Experiment No. 1. Uh, how the hell do I beat this thing, it just keeps regenerating 700ish HP after each round??

Kill the cannon, then the main tank, Leave the support tanks for last. Also, if you have someone who can cast all-generata it's very helpful. Only use attackers and one caster (the all-generata person).

If you go to the Old Sorceress' Mansion and defeat Persona you'll get an accessory that teaches your immortals Absorb Fire. Either that, or you should focus all your efforts on taking out the support tank cannon first since its the cannon that does the most damage. I learned that if your characters are totally out of MP the support tanks won't bother absorbing MP from you.

This is pissing me off, i'm literally just stuck in this battle. Either I use a ton of items and am completely depleted for the rest of the finale in the grand staff or I restart.

Horseshit.

Use Divide with your spellcasters that have high HP! That really helps.

I don't even know what divide is. F this. At least I'm not super deep into it yet, or I would be REALLY pissed.

EDIT: I actually am pretty pissed off. Say I played it wrong, whatever. I was able to skate past the last bosses, did fine going into the grand staff, why the fuck make a battle like that and NOT allow Flee? Horseshit. It was literally unwinnable for the part I had without using just about every item, which would then make the game unfinishable basically.
