I'm sure people have said this, but it looks like I fall into the category of those who feel incredibly blessed/spoiled by having played Oblivion/Mass Effect (or any other decent RPG with real-time combat.) Turn-based, random battles are dead to me and Lost Odyssey has confirmed that beyond any kind of redemption. It's competent in most respects, but I still feel it sucks (to me.)
I think to a larger extent the "strategy" of turn-based is so minimal in the context of its gameplay that it doesn't fit anymore. I can't seem to come up with any reasonable/logical benefits for it, and I think the subjective reasoning is almost entirely due to the nostalgia factor of past RPGs. Same goes with random encounters; there is no need for them other than to grind up, but because I tend to play SP games for the story, all they do is get in the way, serving more as a frustration inducer since they impede my progress massively.
The whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The juxtaposition of enjoying the story/characters (Jansen) and the concept, while still hating the game is really awkward. I just don't want to waste my time on it anymore.
