That's how long it took me too, almost exactly in fact.

How do discs 3 and 4 compare?

disc 1 & 2 took me about 18-15 hours each. I´m still in disc 3 and reached 53 hours total already so its longer.

welp i finally got past disc 1.

just a few things i'd like to say.

the 1000 years of dreams sequences are excellent. normally i would skip all that text, but after hanna's departure i was hooked and i've spent a lot of time looking for them.

spoilers

a few things bothered me after
liriums death
. the fact that they made you engage in two fetch'em quests and
the lighting of the torches with mack
just detracted from the emotional impact of the whole ordeal.

Woohoo beat the Immortal today. Had to adjust all of my party's skills to insure maximum efficieny against this one particular boss but I did it. :D

Think I'm at the final dungeon on disk 3... really liked disk 3, as it was the most intense as far as cinematics went, and it had a real FF6 feel
with the split parties
. Oh man, when I was waiting on line to pick up Brawl, some kid was pointing at a Lost Odyssey banner bitching about turn based RPGs and how the game looks stupid, just like another FF7 game... I wanted to smack the bastard :lol

Tabris said:
I'll answer this once I beat the game, but either way I would recommend it as it has excellent moments and the premise is really good. I think it could have been handled much better and needs less campy moments but I still recommend it.

I am in complete agreement with this. I think the fact the voice acting is generally quite competent helps keep a lot of the dialogue from being completely unbearable. Quality is sort of inconsistent across most aspects of the game, but it's still quite fun if you're into JRPGs.

I'm about halfway through disc 4, and while I really enjoy all the side quests and item gathering, I wish it had been spaced out a bit more across the rest of the game. Once you obtain certain skills and accessories, your immortals become pretty unstoppable. Kaim and Seth have essentially mastered every accessory skill, and I've barely done any grinding. I always enjoy making my characters overpowered in RPGs but it seems like it happened without me even putting much effort forth. Still, I can't wait to get home and play more.

Is there a general agreement as to what makes the best party setup for endgame?

so how well does the game keep your interest on discs 3 and 4?

I am near the start of disc 3 (
in the ice region with those very annoying thief creatures, man I hate those things
)and am losing my motivation to play, mainly due to the slowness (long load times, unskippable random battles) and that battles are falling into a predictable pattern now my characters are all leveled up well.

I now dread the cutscene that preceeds triggering a memory, as I feel obligated to read them :lol

It was the opposite for me, I thought 1st disc was ok and the 2nd disc were boring as hell. It didn't get good till the 3rd disc and can't really say anything about the 4th disc as I just got to it.

About 60 hours in and I'm in sidequest mode. Only a few more to finish and then it's on to beat the game.

I'm the same. bit over the game right now. sidequest mode actually killed the game for me - they should have spread it out more over the discs instead of leaving it all to disc 4. I'm going to allocate a day on sat or sunday, sit down and beat it. I'll probably sell it when done. I don't see myself playing it ever again or going back to it.

- Unskippable random battles? Do you not use Flee (left with the analog stick) or the Turn Tail skill?

- You get all your items back if you beat their king, by the way. He's a sub boss and he can be unlocked by letting those monkeys steal the crown, which is a 'hidden' item somewhere in the Glacier (though I forgot where).

I wish I could use all the characters (though I could do without Mack and Sarah), since the formation screen even has 10 slots. :[

The sidequest are fantastic ooh and I finished the game today and I got to say that the 'near' ending
after you beat Gongora
was fantastic aswell, almost a return to form I would say. One thing is for sure. I want a sequel. Either with the current cast (ditch Sara though) or with a new cast like Final Fantasy does its sequels (though I'd miss Kaim and Jansen).

well as in either avoiding them (if they were visible on the screen) or having an item or spell that eliminates the triggering of random battles. You have to wait for the battle to start to even be able to use the flee option.

as well as the long load times (into and out), and random battles there is limited EXP so most of the time I dont even benefit from levelling up my characters.

I loved what blue dragon did with the ability to destory weak enemies on contact using barrier magic - not only do you avoid tedious battles, you can level up jobs while doing so

Kaim and Seth on the front row
Ming, Sarah and Sed in the back. Mortals are pretty much worthless in combat during actual endgame. Sed can hold his own best because of his handy skills and the fact that he can hold 3 accessories.

I'm up to 33 hours and I'm about an hour away from beating the game because I stopped to sidequest for a while. Kinda short for a JRPG but I guess I was just doing it right(and grinding at numara atoll! :D)

Sed's value isn't in his attacking as much as the fact that by having Double SP, Double Gold, Double Loot, and Double XP on him he frees up 4 spaces for the immortals which by the end of the game are usually pretty important. So he's like the personification of 4 skill slots. Plus he does passable damage and isn't Cooke or Mack. Cooke would be useful if she wasn't 10 and i always end up trying to kill her instead of the enemy.

How the fuck do you beat the game at 33 hours? I beat most of the sidequests and finished the game at roughly 66 hours. Did you skip the 1000 year dreams or something?

That is the only explanation. The dreams alone are at least like 10 hours if you go through them like they are intended.

dropped? i dunno, but I've stole at least two or so.

also, there are three accessories for extra slots, +3, +5 and +10 iirc.

i only have the +5 one, it's called freedom armband, got it at disc 4 in uhra if i am not mistaken.

check gamefaqs and if you missed any, try the auction house.

The slot +10 acc. is called the 1000 year something or other and is obtained from defeating the
Blue Dragon, intentional pun?
on a sidequest in disc 4.

Incorrect. You get the 1000 year accesory (+10 slots) for beating
The Holy Beast
which is also a sidequest on disc 4. The
Blue Dragon
and
Persona
boss are probably intentionally named like that as a friendly nod to those rpgs.

kaim and seth with casting support on ming and sarah, those two cast gamble. It's level 2 spirit magic that does random damage, only way to hit the silver ones. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Read the first two, laughed at their terriblism, have skipped the rest or done my best to not even bother picking them up. I also skip all mack and cooke exclusive cutscenes and read quickly through when I can press A(unless they're voiced scenes)

How the hell can anyone enjoy this game without enjoying the 1000 year stories. It's the defining feature to the game.

The terriblism? lol

Because a few them are fun and great, but it's a bit much to actually read all of them.

Much of Kaim's stories are also rather similar, so I didn't really read all of them. I would have liked more from Seth, Sarah and Ming though.

Speaking of which, about Sed:

shouldn't he be missing a leg? (Aneira ripped it off, right?) And be only about 30+ instead of seamingly much older than that?

O_O

So far I'd say Disc 4>3>1>2

Did you play in long sessions by any chance?

Hmmm. Disc 1 was amazing, but disc 2 has been quite a bit more dull. The story and character interaction have taken a back seat, and, to me, it feels like there's no new music--or any music at all! (Tosca, Salam, Black Cave, World Map Ocean....)

im still in disc 1, but i have a couple of complaints.
1-reading through all those texts in the thousand year dreams is bit too much.
2-turn based needs to go. i thought i read somewhere this game was time based battle system?

They're generic stuff that you'd find in any high school textbook with random authors names next to them. They just happen to have the names of the main characters on there instead of random stuff. I go to Donald Barthelme for my flash fiction.

Now, I could be wrong because Besada said he liked them, but again I only read two(plus one for the treasure hunt that gets you medusa's head) and decided they weren't worth my time. I can't remember what the first one was about but I know the second was the "wah i'm not liked by my girlfriends parents" and the medusa's head one was "war is bad mmmkay".

My opinion: 1>4>3>2

If you think thats too much reading, I think Planescape Torment might be right up your alley.

Did anyone feel the difficulty ramping up a bit in the Hot Cave in Disc 3, east of Gohtza? Its not that hard but i have had some party members dying in the battles, something that didnt happen at all previously.

Yep, i thought about that too. I suppose he is using a phrostesis. There hasnt been a lot of interaction between Sed and Seth after meeting again. I was expecting a bit more development in that aspect.

Regarding age, i dont remember if there was an age stated about Sed in the dream. But yes he definitely shouldnt be as old if all of them were visited by Gongora at the same time.

Its still the hardest battle i have had in the game and i´m at 3rd disc.

Don´t remember it well (do you even have access to cooke and mack already?) but try putting Seth and Kaim defending (with the recover GC, HP, MP skills on) to keep Jansen safe and attack with him casting.

Btw, yesterday i got the 1k enemies defeated (not the 0.5k perfects yet).

I finally lost interest near the beginning of disc 3.
Just after the kids hijack the train
. I just didn't care anymore, and the punishing parts of JRPG design just started to overwhelm the fun.

Because they are Powerpoint presentations that become incredibly redundant as most of them are incredibly similar.

Just after that there´s a LOT of movement and Sed joins the party, give it a try.

2 - you dont like turned based battles? not cool....

ps i looooooove turn based battle systems. GO JRPGS!

powerpoint presentations? thats an unfair description. The way the music, tone and moods in the backrounds change WITH the story and that really does alot to draw you in emotionally. and i thought the art in the tyd sequences was done really well also

I disagree completly. Most have a general theme in death, but the stories vary completly.

Compare Bright Rain to say Signpost and tell me how those are alike in any way. I've read them all and while most have the theme of death and Kaim's thoughts on the manner, the presentation/vechicle of that theme is different with each story.

I think the thousand year dreams are the most brillant fusion of two mediums in quite a while. I would love to read a novel like The Count of Monte Cristo or 1982 with the same structure.

This has to be one of the most enjoyable JRPGS I have ever played.

Fixed

I got this at the weekend, still on Disk 1 (just past the 2nd boss) and I'm loving the game to bits. Hardly any granding apart from when you want to learn new abilities quicker via skill link, a brilliant story so far, great graphics and top notch voice acting. Jansen is so awesome. Its the best RPG I've played since FFVIII IMO (well thus far anyway...).

Ah damn it... :(

I'll finish it anyway, first JRPG I've played this gen (not that I've ahd much choice), so maybe the fact that I'm starved will contribute to my views on it being a great game and it will continue to be great because of it.
