IMO the story peaked at the end of disc 1 (really dissapointing because it was so good). Gameplay gets really good on disc 3 and peaks at disc 4 (if you like exploring and doing sidequests).

That's exactly how I felt :(

F*ck this stupid game. No really; this game is a waste of the four fucking discs its burned to. Not only does it paint you into an unwinnable corner, but there are no save points, so the only way to proceed is to back track 2 hours worth of playing and over one of the harder bosses in the game.... BAD FUCKING GAME DESIGN, SAKAGUCHI.

Is there anyway to NOT have to fight the Arthrosaurases until you've fucking saved? I just watched the boat automatically go into Numara, have a cinematic about the arthosauras, and then watched as my entire fucking crew got wiped out. The nearest save point is two fucking hours ago with another giant boss battle and a time consuming ruin maze with a whole shit-ton of harder than normal random battles.

This is the culmination of everything wrong with this game happening all at once on the final fucking disc. I'm sorry, but I'm back to my original stance: this game blows.

mods, really did he just admit this? what an idiot.

and back-tracking for two hours? LOL the longest I've went without saving is 20-30 minutes. and that was before a big boss, so you say.

Dude, you must have missed the save point. This game had plenty and I'm almost positive there was one before that particular battle as well. I don't remember a single, big boss fight that didn't provide a save point right before it. So, no, it's not bad game design.

I think there's a checkpoint right before that battle. You don't lose more than a minute if you die.

Maybe if you shut the machine off, I don't know.

You can also save when you have that area location list open. Just hit Y and go to System. Its not the game's fault you're oblivious to certain things.

There's a checkpoint, but grinding is needed as there's no way it's possible to beat all of them in time at my current level (with my current gear, etc.) I was specifically looking for a savepoint after I had beaten that boss, and theh boat automatically went into the hypercurrents and over to numara. Ridiculous.

I'd have the same problem, as that would just save prior to the cinematic, but wouldn't let me grind at all.

You could save at the overworld before you went into the direction of Numara so yeah that's kinda your own fault. Not to mention that the Arthosaurus should be easy as fuck unless you used flee for most random encounters in the game. And even if you somehow weren't at the right lvl before the arthosaurusses you could take your ship in another direction and lvl up somewhere else. Go land somewhere and then travel to Uhra. Go to Gongora's hidden cave and lvl up to 49. The encounters there will raise you a level each time. Seriously, the only time the game gets hard it as the Temple of Enlightenment and that's optional.

You can save on the ocean as soon as you finish the Eastern Tribe Temple (that's where you're at, right?).

I´m back at the sewers after meeting Sed.

Right before the big storage tanks, in the previous section where there´s a merchant/shop and a savepoint, in the level below theres a corner with some chests to the right but theres a fence door that i cant open and prevents you from going there. How can you reach that section?

Btw, i didnt have problems with the Ice beast at all in the train section. It casted All-aquarus but using Barricade/barricadus helped to mitigate the damage. It was easier than the T-Rex.

I'm at a crossroads.

I don't have 99 seeds (96) and I have no clue where I missed the last 3. It sounds like it's going to be a pain to find those last 3, so that leaves me out of 5 achievements unless I want to spend the time. I think I'm just going to beat the game now. I've done everything but the last side quest dungeon (which has 4 achievements linked with it).

I think I'll be content just beating the game right now. I can do those last 9 achievements later.

did you get the 3 seeds underwater (bubbles)?

Yeah, I wasn't following any guide but I looked at the guide when I finished all areas and I missed during the disc 1-3 portions so I would need to backtrack through every area to find it.

Is it me, or are Dreams really hard to find on Disc 3? I don't think I encountered one of those yet. Hints for treasure also seem rare, since I've only received one.
I didn't find any. At all. And then about 10 in a row right off the bat in Disc 4.

And seriously, how do people not know you can save from the Overworld menu? I mean, everytime you go into the menu in the field, the Save option is grayed out. Why would that exist if you could only save at save points.

51 hours in already and still in disc 3 (in the refugees camp and finally there are some sidequests).

I´m really slow and like to explore everything. May be the reason for not having problems with bosses at all. I think the Numara Knights are still the hardest encounter i have had in the game.

Didnt get the 500 perfects/1k enemies achievements yet though. Its amazing Mejilan got them so early.

So are you able to get all seeds on disc 4 or are some not available to go back to? I'm missing one still and narrowed it down to end of disc 2+. :lol

Alls seeds should be available on disc 4. If you missed some in areas that can no longer be accessed than you can get those at the auctionhouse.

If you're there, you don't need to grind. You need to learn how to play :p

Did you try putting them to sleep? I went to the lower ones first - sleep the first one, kill the second, then go to the top and sleep one, kill the other. Return to the one you first put to sleep and kill it, then finish the last one. They shouldn't really get too terribly close to the city.

Tabris, hows the plot in the game so far? I want the hard cold truth :D

So I got the Well Travelled achievement which means I'm fully poised for dozens of hours of side quests. I only poked my head in the new areas to get them unlit on the map so now I've got the whole world in front of me. How exciting. I've also beaten two Secret Bosses and totally maxed out Sed's skills. Basically my party has just been a skill factory, leeching off Sed while the other four mortals basically just rot. So when I'm all done with Sed and can cast him into the boiler room of the White Boa (or whatever he wants to fucking do, he's useless to me) my mortals will be so underpowered. But hey, that just means more grinding fun!

Seriously, I just love the shit out of the this game. Every new skill you learn brings a new shade of awesome to the game. It's just the best.

I'm no Tabris but imo the plot up to the end of the first disc is amazing. After that it takes a straight dip into mediocre. The 1000 year dreams are all amazingly well written though.

And it keeps getting worse the further you get. I've just reached the beginning of disc 4 and Lost Odyssey's story is full of typical JRPG cliché's by now.

A shame too, since it started off well. But at least we still have the Dreams...

Yeah Ive been hearing that a lot! But boy did those RPGamer reviews hype me up for the story:

RPGFan said:
While the plot is well written and provides an excellent backdrop, the characters are the true focus of the story and Lost Odyssey ensures that the player gets to know each of them thoroughly by the time the game reaches its conclusion. The best moments in the game are all focused on the characters, and will easily bring tears to the eyes of players on several occasions.

RPGFan said:
The story of Lost Odyssey is where the game really becomes impressive. From the characters and their terrific dialogue to the Thousand Years of Dreams sequences, Lost Odyssey really shines. The main focus of the story is on Kaim Argonar, an immortal with a forgotten past. Kaim is a mercenary loyal to the sorcerer Gongora, who seems to be using the amnesic Kaim for nefarious means. As he is sent on out on a mission for Gongora, Kaim teams up with another immortal named Seth and the hilarious, comic-relief character Jansen. The story focuses more on character development through humorous and often emotional dialogue instead of a twisting, confusing plot, and the end result is quite memorable. The cast is very likeable and each character contributes to the story in a meaningful way.

RPGFan said:
Well, Lost Odyssey has an amazing storyline. The game grips the player from start to finish and just doesn't let go. The characters live and breathe on the screen and the entire world comes to life. Jansen, the party black magic user and resident joker, is particularly well done in terms of personality, model, and voice work. It is simply phenomenal.

I was expecting quite a bit after reading all that praise. Heck, they said it would bring tears to your eyes :/

It will bring tears to your eyes (disc 1 that is). I was crying like a little girl. The characters are very well written and the story itself had so much potential but after disc 1 it fails to deliver on it. Still not a bad story by any means and the 1000 year dreams more than make up for the story on the later discs.

Btw can anyone help me with getting three stars on the following Backyard battles:
Master Ring User
Manny Fever

They just seem impossible to do.

Well you guys are getting me in :D I certainly loved the first hour so im looking forward to it.

Benjamin, does the story have that kind of impact beyond disc 1 through till the end?

I haven't finished the story on Disc 4 yet but there's been nothing that emotionally devastating.

HOWEVER, for me at least, that emotional lynchpin carried throughout the entire story because of the relationship dynamics of the party that followed. If you're just poking at bosses and inhaling skills, it might not register as well, but if you really buy into the narrative and the idea that this
Grandpa is just taking care of his grandkids
(Disc 1 Spoiler), then there's plenty of resonance throughout.

Played only 1 hour so far but everything looks good. Opening intro was good and when it prompted a combat during the scenes I was pretty impressed. Beautiful graphics and good music so far, I hated to put the controller down but I had to catch a flight. Definitely looking forward to playing more of LO :D

Really? Disk one (beyond the dreams) isn't sad at all, oh no lady I just met died w/ annoying kids crying, I should be so emotionally attached after seeing her fall from the cliff 5 times as a child! Seriously, the first dream you had is so much more touching than the entire first disk. In regards to the story, I think disk 3 has been the best so far baring in mind I'm sidequesting on four right now.

They just seem impossible to do.

For Master Ring User: Poison the dog and let it die first before you kill the main guy. If you mess up his ring stuff too many times he'll cast annihilation and wipe you out so be sure to keep that up while the dog dies.

For Manny Fever: Have all your character use Slot Hit on the enemies until you get 10 successful coin tosses. You need to win the fight within 10 turns as well so you should have enough coin tosses after 3 full rounds.

I got the Manny one right after my post.

I was wondering why that bastard used annihilation. I thought I could outsmart him by failing his ring stuff (and still dealing damage). At what level were your characters when you beat him?

edit: woohoo beat him. Had a lot of luck on my side. When he casted fear he got some nice magic counter in his face. :D

edit 2: Ok the Immortal is not cool, not cool at all. 175.000 health is just ridiculous.

On to middle class for backyard fights. Finally got damage 1M/perfect 500/kill 1K enemy achievements. All pretty much at the same time. :D

EDIT: We get SP for backyard fights but not exp? Does it say how many SP points we get after battles? Haven't noticed it.

That's how long it took me too, almost exactly in fact.

How do discs 3 and 4 compare?
Disc 2 is easily the shortest. Disc 4 can go on for a long time or be over really quickly if you don't do sidequests. I was at about 24 hours starting Disc 3, finished the game with 62 and a couple of dungeons unexplored.

Fuck fuck fuck. I almost beat the immortal. He had only 10.000 health left. Goddamn him and his divide, cube and shadowrus attacks..
So close =(

I'll answer this once I beat the game, but either way I would recommend it as it has excellent moments and the premise is really good. I think it could have been handled much better and needs less campy moments but I still recommend it.

I think I might have said this before in this thread, but I couldn't stand that scene. It just made me uncomfortable watching all these awkward people saying awkward lines with some kind of bizarre silvery liquid coming out of their eyes that looked nothing like tears.

All in all, I'd say that the story is pretty much the same as most rpgs. It even has the shark jumping moment near the end, like in most jrpgs, where everything ceases to make sense.
