Control is an encrypted format, something Apple would need to provide (as well as an easy tool to rip DVDs to your machine, just like ripping CDs to your library)

Encryption really just buys them time. As soon as the crypto keys are found, all of the content is vulnerable.

Unlocking video playback in existing iPods will be a nice touch, and sure there will be interesting deals with broadcasters like the BBC. Probably some Pixar short films as well as a load of music videos.

Assuming it's real, I really don't like the look of the 5G iPod though. Very lazy, seems like a stop-gap till a proper video iPod. And looks worse than the 4G. Bit surprising after they got it totally right with the Nano.

Hope PowerMac/PowerBook updates don't get shoved back till next week.

Since I'm thinking of getting a 4Gig Nano I welcome this news, but I really do fail to see what the attraction is to watching video on any Ipod - then again, I don't understand this fascination with music videos on cell phones, so maybe I'm just not the right market for this kind of thing.
simple really. my ipod is with me virtually everywhere I go. having video on it, even if I only watch it twice a year, is a bonus.

not to mention it will sell a shitload more ipods. I think a shitload quantifies to like 300000000000000 units.

There are two things that people almost always have in their posession: cellphone, music device (ipod or similar). Those are the places where convergence will happen and where the 'next generation' of the computing market will be - on the consumer side.

What about being able to tell iTunes in a series of maybe three or four clicks to automatically download the most recent two days of CNN news broadcasts and copy them to your iPod automatically every time you plug it in, while deleting the older ones automatically.

Every day on your way to work, you instantly have the news, in video, at your fingertips and your convenience.

Edit: Or if you're not like me and don't give a shit about news, replace news with "p0rn" or some such.

I agree, a hybrid iPod/cellphone with a useful hybrid interface would be the ultimate purchase.

Well, I don't work in an area where I can commute via mass-transit, so I'd be driving, so video does me no good in that case - I'd much rather be able to tell iTunes to automatically download the latest Podcast from NPR or something.

Well yeah, if you don't have an opportunity to take your eyes off what you're doing while you're away from your home theater, then I don't really know why you'd need a video-playing anything.

But the thought of throwing on all my ripped movies and television shows onto my iPod and displaying them on a TV via even just composite cable is hella cool. The iPod would simultaneously act like a video playback device and a remote. That'd be a huge selling point.

ah can't view apple fan sites who knew this would be so big?

Jobs could walk out and plop a tard in a transparent plastic toilet and he'd get a standing ovation from the apple-heads.

Engadget- "Bad news — Apple conveniently picked a venue in a cellular dead zone, which means no real-time reports from the keynote (there’s no WiFi, either). We’ll have reports as quickly as we can get them to you."

Looks like it may be a while before we get an update.

We're a rabid bunch. Had the same shit during the Nano unveiling and just about every MacExpo since Apple quit doing live web streaming a couple years ago.

It'd be pretty funny if they set up some kind of signal disruptor like in the NYC subways. They'd never admit it though...
this is what appleinsider is claiming

Apple has reportedly blocked cell phone access, and hence live coverage, from today's special event

From engadget so far:

Apparently there’s a Salling Clicker replacement for the Mac—a Mac remote, as it were. It’s called FrontRow.

We also have word of a new, flatter iMac with built-in iSight.
