Official PSP 1.50 exploit thread (proper loader has arrived)

the only reason devs used the xbox kits is because no viable alternate existed...

and that's the reason many homebrew devs to this day still don't mess with the xbox, even if they'd like to...

there is already a viable alternative for PSP so reputable devs won't touch the official sdk...

You do have a point there, but I think these official libraries will at least be reverse engineered to hell, to figure out the workings of VFPU and GPU, which I think are going completely unused in current PSP homebrew software.

Quake 2 for PSP!

One of our users, Justin, has done a conversion for Quake 2 / Heretic from the Doom/Doom2 release by Lantus.

To get it working:
1. Download the newest DOOM1/DOOM2 package
2. Extract that file
3. Download Heretic
4. Extract That File
5. Rename Heretic.WAD file as DOOM2.WAD
6. Put the DOOM2.WAD file into the DOOM-PSP folder.
7. Place DOOM-PSP folder onto mem stick in game folder.
8. Start PSP (it says DOOM is on the mem stick but Heretic loads up
instead).
9. Now Enjoy!

Heh, if you actually think people will pretend leaked documentation doesn't exist and bang their heads against a wall reverse engineering entire box instead, you're being incredibly naive.
For that matter rest assured that existing emulation stuff already had access to hw docs at very least.

The pictures on psphacker.com show Quake 2 weapons on Quake 1 maps.

I don't get it....

Seems fake if you ask me. Quake used a totally different resource format to Doom/Doom2, I don't see how you could just download the files and bung them in. Heretic might work though, I think that used the Doom engine.

wtf? The title says Quake 2, but the instructions are to get Heretic running (which is stupidly simple, everyone knows that WAD files are interchangeable). This doesn't even make any sense.

NesterJ 1.03m out now with button reaction speeds that have been increased(Helps for punchout when dodging certain boxers)

no, i'm just saying they won't go around developing and compiling their projects with the official SDK rampantly like was done with xbox

I've heard sleep mode in an emulator is a great way to corrupt your memory stick.

Not sure if it is 100% true, but after it happened to me, I am sure as hell not going to do it again.

Same here. I had left Super Punch Out in sleep mode during work. Afterwards I discovered that all my data had been erased and I had to format the memory stick. Although I keep back-up files on my computer, it's very annoying and simply not worth it.

PSPersonalize Ver 1.0 - Change Background Images

Now you can replace the background images on your PSP!

You can find it in our Downloads section. Also, you can find the original background pack to put your PSP back to stock if you want to.

Here is a copy of the readme included:

PSPersonalize Ver. 1.0
June 19th, 2005
For PSP 1.5 or 1.0

PSPersonalize is a PSP program that lets you replace the background images in your PSP menu. On the PSP, there are 12 backgrounds, one for every month. This program lets you replace any image you want with your own custom made images.

Read everything before taking any steps. We are not responsible for any damages in result of this application. Use at your own risk.

Here’s how it works:

haven't tried yet, and i'm not sure if i will, hahaha, but for those of you daring enough, go ahead!

Wowsers, sounds neat, but yeah I don't want to be the first to jump the gun on this one. :lol

Meh, I can return this memory stick if it dies, and this PSP isn't mine so... :lol

Post with results in a minute.

Edit: Works fine. Got a screen cap of Batman punching a goon in the face from the Animated Series DVD, tweaked the picture to the proper resolution and color-depth, and it worked fine. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera on me at the moment, so no pictures.

So wait,by puting these images on the 2nd card youre only going to see your images when you do the card swap? I was hoping that it would be a permanent replacement, like seeing them when you do a normal boot up on a PSP.

Err,nevermind,I get it now. Damn I'm slow tonight.

The background stuff has really taken off: on some other forums there are tens or maybe hundreds of backgrounds posted. And yeah, it works - and if it goes wrong, it seems that your PSP will not die.

It does flash write to the ROM, though, so it's best to have AC power.

Not that flash writing has started, it'll be interesting to see what other uses will come up.

then what happens if it does not work? the PSP just simly says "error" and goes back to the menu like nothing happened?

It just shows a white background - and you can restore the original backgrounds by flashing them there.

nothing too fancy

does this void the warranty? i know you're not opening the psp but flashing something that you're not suppose to flash seems kinda grey

link.bmp

tempting to flash...

Well that's great but those white lines are still present in the background.

Still I'm going to try this. Also, I heard this will void your warranty as it flashes the bios, is this true?

You can always flash back the default color backgrounds(I tried this successfully). I think the only way you can void your warranty is if you take your PSP apart or if you somehow flash incorrectly and kills your PSP from booting :-l
What happens if you flash a BMP file that is over 150K, it will leave you with a white background. Be sure to follow the instructions in the txt file.

i don't understand why it would corrupt the memory stick though

I rember people complaining about losing high scores in Lumines when they put it in sleep mode. So there's definitely something fishy with sleep mode and memory sticks.

That was because of a shoddily designed "Do you want to load your save game?" prompt that came up after finishing a round that had been in sleep mode, not because of any intrinsic flaw with the PSP, memory stick or sleep mode. Say yes and you'd lose the score from the last round, say no and it would then ask if you wanted to save your game. Screwed a lot of people up the first few times they saw it.

The PSP Personalize -tool can be used to change the startup animation too, says PSP Hacker. I'm impressed.

I have to repeat myself: firmware hacking can lead to even more great things!

wow, I am glad I had my 1.0 in the mail today. did the swapping for some days now and it isnt that much trouble (not much more than changing an UMD) but it is so much more conveinient with 1.0 (and sure better for memstick slot and sticks)

if emus in sleep mode are screwing up memory cards, does that mean there might be problems using sleep mode in other 'game sharing' situations? How would the PSP even know what it is running?

so playing a Snes game on PSP and when your done you pause the game and put your PSP in sleep mode does that hurt the MS?

I remember a old program for my Amiga which let you put the kickstart (equalent to the firmware in PSP) in your fastmemory (cause the kickstart was usually on a slow-reading ROM.) all calls were to the fastmemory kickstart instead then.

If they made such a program for your PSP you could have your PSP firmware on the memeorystick, and try different things etc.. or just load PSP 1.0 Firmware maybe.

*snorts* You Rock! I think the screen might be wide enough to take your famous "Before and After with the Cube IGN crew" series horizontal ;)

for some reason, the pics don't load if i switch between 2 images on the PSP. i guess the PSP doesn't have memory to load them up? if i switch to a month with a default BMP, then go to the other pic, it'll load. otherwise, it'll just show up a white screen

anyway, i made this wallpaper if anyone wants to use:

katamari5ea.png

for some reason, image hosting doesnt do bmp. here's the bmp file if the above image doesnt work: here
