Official PSP 1.50 exploit thread (proper loader has arrived)

Man, this makes even less sense. A dollar to the first person that can explain why this exploit works.

EDIT: Ehh, I guess the PSP must try to launch the EBOOT.PBP in BLAH%, but when it actually tries to execute it (after the chime animation) it launches the EBOOT.PBP in BLAH, because it can't handle the %. Weird.

I guess PSP's lacklustre line-up is a blessing in desguise. Hopefully by the time anything interesting comes out (read: GTA:LCS) there will be some sort of solution to our problems.

Success!

I take it if I copy an emu to the GAME folder and then try to run the game, I should see in addition to the emu a corrupted data aswell, correct?

Each program should have a corresponding corrupted data icon.

Interestingly with my modified background it wont show the actual corrupted icon picture.

Why don't the guys who write this fancy installers just re-use the existing icons, instead of making me replace them?

vvv I heard you can find it on the internet. Confirm/deny?

Possible problem?

I have just set it up, had a quick game of Contra and then after that I wanted to stick a few more game on to my memory stick. I plug my psp into the USB and click USB connection and nothing; my computer won’t recognize the PSP. I hear two quick “dings” instead of the normal just on and my PSP screen says I am connected although I am not.

I don’t know if the new trick and this are connected though, may be just something wrong my end!

Panic Over! (for me)

I thought it was the cable too but it was not. I just rebooted the sytem and then it started working again. I dont know why I needed a restart though. My camera and ipod and USB storage stuff would not work either so the prob was with the computer)

Happens to me sometimes with the psp, i think just something to do with the generic drivers the psp uses.

works.. now I don't have to waste money on a second MS for my PSP. No way I'm spending another penny on this thing, especially when I can fit a couple emulators and more than a few classic games all on one 32MB memstick. I don't feel like watching video on a 4 inch screen. grats to psp-dev for actually making the PSP useful without requiring any further investment.

Wasnt there a 3 MS version of the swaploit for 1.51 or was that just a hoax? If not maybe they can work something out with 3 folders on on one stick ?!?

What is this?!!?!?!??

Can anybody post the steps to get this to work, none of the pdf tutorials are working for me.

Ignore the application (although cheers to the PSP-DEV guys for finding the exploit)

If you can find some emulators that are already in 'swapsploit' format, then download those. They'll give you two folders, MS1 and MS2, each with a folder in it (eg SNES). Rename the folder in MS1 to 'SNES%' (put a % at the end).
Copy both folders to the GAME folder on your PSP. Eg e:\PSP\GAME\SNES and e:\PSP\GAME\SNES%

Put your ROMs in the SNES folder (the one without the %). some emulators may want a specific location, but it will be under that folder.

Now on your PSP, go to the game section, scroll down to memory stick, and run the one that should appear as a proper emu (ignore the corrupted one)

If you only get the emulator as one file (although over the next week or so I expect them to all come in 'split' format), you copy the EBOOT.PBP to SNES%, and then use PBPunpacker to open the file, copy out the DATA.PSP file and rename it EBOOT.PBP. You then copy that one to the SNES folder, and copy across as above.

Nice, so basically I just take the MS1 file I already have and add a % to the name then copy it to the Memory Stick that has the MS2 file and all the roms?

Damn, i can't find a genesis emu thats works.
I'v tried PSPGenesis v12.b but all i get is a red screen?
Anyone know how to fix this or an emu that does work?

OMG :lol

How would you even find something this trivial to work around it?

I mean a %? Were these guys just trying everything or something?

Sony's OS is as bad as MS"s sometimes :lol

Awesome, awesome, AWESOME! And a big haw haw to the non believers, haters.

Heh, I'm happy to be proved wrong. For their next trick, I'd like them to make it work on 1.51 :lol

I got it to work for my nes emu, but there is some corrupt data on my memory stick in the game folder, it doesnt hurt anything but anyone have any suggestions on what it is.

also can someone tell me how to do this for multiple emulators on one stick?

Copy the system.fnt file that came in the emu .rar into your emu folder on the PSP memstick, I had the same problem and this worked for me, playing Sonic 2 right now!!

Words can not describe the awesomeness this has opened up :lol

Also, a general warning, my screen went into power saver mode (timed screen shutdown, not the PSPs sleep mode), and it seems to have frozen my rom, and the only way I could revive my PSP was to compleyely restart it. I haev only experienced this with PSPGenesis though, don't know if it was a fluke or what.

My guest it is the real emulator and the psp is still reading the file, but hack fools it into launching. My guest is not to worry about it.

The currupted data is the big eboot.php. The "normal" looking data is the small 17k or so eboot.php. When we used the swap method mem card 2 (the real emulator card) always had the currupted data as I guess this was the key to making the hack work. Now with this new hack you combine both the small and large files onto one card.

As for more emulators, just do exactly the same thing you did for your other emu. As an example I have both the NESTERJ and RIN emu's on one card. Simply make a NESTERJ and NESTERJ% folder as well as a RIN and RIN% folder in your PSP/GAME folder.

Do the swap method program (the one that puts it into an output folder with MS1 and MS2) and put the files into the appropreate dir's. After you are done with one, simple use that program again for the next emu and put those into the other set of folders.

Now your mem card should show 2 loaders and 2 currupted files under the mem card manager. Just leave the currupted ones alone (as they just sit at the bottom anyway.

Didn't want to run an installer for a thing like this, so I did what the app is supposed to do manually -- and the shit actually works! I gotta give them cred for being persistant enough to find that a bizarre flaw in the system.

Now, is there a good commandline tool for PBP-fiddling around so you can do this a bit more tidily (and preserve the original icons etc)?

Thanks alot for the help, that is what i thought the corrupt was, but everyonce in a while one just pops up on my memory card for no apparant reason. I wanted to check with some others.

Thanks again

I just leave the original alone, don't use that application at all.

I also managed to get nice icons from the gentleman that posted them before, by adding them in PBPunpacker.

This happens all the time. I get it quite frequently on every emulator I use, and it's mostly due to loading in a bad ROM. In fact, it's even happened in a UMD game my friend was playing (FIFA). So it doesn't hurt your PSP, don't worry about it. Just hold the power switch up for about 5-10 seconds and it will restart.

THNX DUDE!
Awesome it runs very smooth in 333mhz
BTW, is anyone sure that the 333mhz option doesn't harm the PSP?

I've had the same problem with PSPGenesis as well. Bear in mind that all of these emus have all just recently been ported to the PSP and PSPGenesis one in particular just showed up this week at v. 0.1 No doubt there are plenty of kinks to work out, even though it already runs many games very well.

Other than draining the battery faster I don't see how playing the PSP at the clock speed which was meant to will harm it.

Hmm? You still need to extract the executable (DATA.PSP) from the original PBP and put it in its own directory, you know. I can't seem to find any other tool for PBP-"hacking" than PBP Unpacker, which is pure GUI based.

Wow, the swapless trick really works! It's amazing that something like this exploit was under everyone's noses all the time. I wonder if it was a sheer ingenuity that helped those people figure it out or, just the unending experimentation, helped with tons of luck.

How do you know it was meant to be running at 333? 333 will generate more heat and maybe some of the components are not made for that.

However, everybody who wants to play at 333 should be aware it could do some damage, more so if it runs for a long time at that speed.

I've been wondering about the second file, the Data.psp executable that gets renamed to EBOOT.PBP, that if you look at it just appears as Corrupted data. Has anyone tried repacking this with just the icon PNG to see if it still works as part of the two step boot process, while showing an icon instead of corrupted data from the XMB interface?
