i missed the early episodes so i have no idea.

they do have a few screen split moments and the ending scenes with the monks are pretty funky/funny.

Is Samurai Champloo planned for 26 episodes?

If so then episode 8 should at least start some plot development.

Honestly everything after episode 1 was just average or good. Some might make good fillers in a serious arc but that's it. Looking at the series as a whole, from 1 to 7, it's just an OK anime with potential. That's it. I do appreciate the work they put in animation some times. for example Many anime, even One Piece, just draw a back ground market with static people while the main characters move through.. O__o

Champloo however has awesome attention to detail and you can see all kinds of people moving and interacting. Here's another good example: usually in anime if you watch a scene with people talking/fighting/whatever there are parts that are moving (animated) while other are just like back ground.. including characters with frozen emotions just "waiting" for their turn to "move." I hate that.

heh this is turning into a rant on animation now. :p

I guess I'm pissed off that lately I can't keep my mind off thinking about it. Whenever I'm watching an anime lately, I can't help think that this back ground looks "fake" or just like a picture the characters are moving on or how that character "stops" until the other one finishes what they have to say. There are no blinks or breathing or wind against the grass that you see in many quality animation.

Maybe I should quite watching anime for a while....

by the way, what the hell happened to episode 8?

IIRC by thier schedule episode 10 just aired last night is this show cancelled or something?

The raw for 8 I think is out.

I doubt the series is cancelled-- it just maybe people are not that crazy about Champloo anymore so the fansubber's don't make it priority. Just a guess..

yeah, shininchiro wantanabe really has done some of the most amazing animation ive ever seen when he wants to. He is more spotty over the course of an entire 26 episode series though. Big mix of quality. From amazing to just good. But some things he gets real ambitious about which I love.

Like, Animatrix. He had 2 amazing shorts. Not a tough time schedule or asked for too much either. Just do a short story. So much quality is poured into these. Detective story was so cool being black and what as it was. The city looked stunning. Then the Kid's story where he did the whole thing in rough sketch form. So cool. Just really trying new stuff and I love that. Cowboy Bebop's movie meanwhile had kick ass animation to. Especially the music video where I think he just messed with how alive he could make everything look. Some of the best animation I've ever seen.

Anyway, as far as Champloo... Needs a villain and a long arc. Bebop never did that but you cant exactly recreate Bebop in a samurai universe. They also did have a recurring story with Spike and Vicious which included two 2 parters and an amazing episode. The interest in Bebop was the innovation and creativity in this future where the possibilities are endless for stories and adventures though. You could recreate detective like stories, mob stories, lone warrior, drug deals, casinos, ship battles, police stories, etc. Its a lot more complex. Samurai Champloo is cool but you can only take so much before it begins to get a bit boring. There's no character who comes on screen like Vicious or Pierrot Le Fou, and makes you open your eyes not wanting to miss a second, savoring every moment he's on screen.

All the locations also look very similar as is to be expected with a anime recreating a historical period. But you more emphasis on the differences between cities and towns. Bebop had a great thing to work with, planets. I was really interested in what Earth was like as well as Mars, Venus, etc.

I just started watching the series recently up until Episode 7.

I like the style, I think it has a lot of potential, and I like the characters and first ep.

However, like J2 Cool stated, there needs to be a villain of some sort. I thought the one-armed man would be it (certainly crazy, but not convincing enough to be a long-running villain), and it looks like the mercenary from the second ep [I think it was the second ep] may be returning to battle Jin again... but there's still no sense of danger coming from that guy like what came from Mad Pierrot or Vicious (or hell, even Vincent). I'm worried that the final ep will probably be a duel between Mugen and Jin, and they'll both end up killing each other. I also hope the entire series wont be just a huge search for the sunflower samurai (find him around episode 13 and then the series can take a different turn or something).

I'll wait a bit longer, but things have been pretty boring for this show. Even CB had boring episodes though.

And why is it that in the first 5 eps, 4 have Fuu being captured?

Cowboy Bebop was the sameway though. There was a lot of random stuff not really involving the main plot. It was still a good anime tho.

Just curious; did the manga version of Samurai Champloo come first, or was the anime the original like Cowboy Bebop was?

I haven't watched Samurai Champloo as of yet (as well as Samurai 7 - I am afraid it will tarnish my love for Kurosawa's Seven Samurai epic), but I've been recently getting another samurai series called Otogizoushi which somewhat resembles more of a Kurosawa style than anything.

One of the reasons why I am not head over heels to watch Champloo is the fact that it seems to try and be a Cowboy Bebop without the fusion of Keiko Nobumoto and Yoko Kanno. But maybe one day I will give it a go :)

Trust me, so far this show has nothing on Cowboy Bebop. Nothing. While Samurai Champloo may have strong similarities; the music, animation (except for the first episode), humor, and overall wackiness just lacks in comparison to Cowboy Bebop. Hell, the overall story arc in Cowboy Bebop is a lot more prominent (and thats not saying much). Though, I'm not saying the show is bad, because it is probably better then most of the anime series that are running their course in Japan right now.

well, i'm enjoying it and that's all that matters (to me) :)

The last episode shown is a recap episode done as a diary reading... I hate recap episodes. :(

I think the humor is much better and more prominent than in Bebop (though there were a couple episodes in Bebop that were funnier than anything in Champloo so far), and the animation is undeniably much better (as it should be, given the 6 years between the two shows). I like the music too. That aspect isn't AS good as Bebop but it's still quite good, and the hip hop atmosphere weirdly works very well with the samurai setting. Bebop is still the wackier show though.

Through 9 episodes, though, there's been very little progress towards the main storyline. There have been little hints of it here and there, but so far, it's pretty much been "The Weekly Adventures of Fuu, Mugen, and Jin." If I had to make a complaint about the show, that would be it. Hopefully the further we go into the series, the more the main plot will work its way in.

So far, the show still has lots of untapped potential, but I've found it highly enjoyable thus far nonetheless.

Meanwhile, the Haetana message board reports that Fuji TV will be dropping its broadcast of Samurai Champloo after it airs episode 17 on September 9th. The entire 26 episodes will be broadcast on BS Fuji (BS Digital Satellite) where it airs on Sunday nights at midnight. The cancellation of Samurai Champloo on Fuji TV has not yet been confirmed.(ANN)

...or does it?

Frankly, i really like the series. i'm not going to bother comparing it to Bebop, because it's not Bebop. It's. i do wish they're would be some continuation of the main plot other than "i'm looking for the samurai that smells of sunflowers", but it's an interesting ride so far.

Anyone else get extremely hungry from the kabayaki in episode 11?

Yeah, the last several episodes have been really good now. I've gotten to the point where I don't even really care that there's no real main story yet, as the episodic tales they've been telling are terrific.

Yes, definitely. 10 was good. 11 was great. Probably my two favorite since the first episode. It lacks a story, but instead it has some real style to it -- quite classy.

...besides the cancellation rumor, does anyone know what the response has been like in Japan?

Agreed. i stopped searching for a plot a few episodes ago. In a way, episode 12 pretty much told you what to expect.

The journey is the destination.

Ep 14 is out. That is one hell of an ep. The direction just blew my mind. And the music was incredible!! Anyone else here see it???
